Seoul, South Korea -August, 2023 : TikTok app. Tik Tok application icon on smartphone screen.

A short video social media platform has been sued by 13 states, including Washington, D.C. District Attorney Generals from these states allege that the app is affecting the mental health of children. The lawsuits detail the harms that the platform has created as it influences children’s behavior that is detrimental to their health as well as has caused deaths. The states’ attorney generals have filed individual lawsuits against TikTok, and these states have both Democratic and Republican administrations.

The following states and Washington District of Columbia have filed cases against the short video platform TikTok:
California
Illinois
Kentucky
Louisiana
Massachusetts

Mississippi
New Jersey
New York
North Carolina
Oregon
South Carolina
Vermont and
Washington.

The October 8 lawsuits allege that the social media platform is harmful to children. Many videos on TikTok challenge kids to perform dangerous acts that have not only injured many of them but have also had fatal consequences for some.

Other points of contention include the beauty filters available on social media platforms that can encourage body image issues that can affect both the physical and mental health of teens. TikTok also allegedly violates the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Other complaints mention features such as live streaming and a virtual currency that is unlicensed and provides TikTok with “substantial revenue”, which is against certain state laws.

Social media platform TikTok reportedly encourages children to participate in pranks that go viral. They get rewards and popularity in the form of increased likes and views. But this social media popularity comes at what cost? Some of it has physical and mental repercussions, and this could be the reason why so many states have sued the short video platform.

Spokespersons for the short video platform have said they have been putting checks and balances in place, but the attorney generals believe that TikTok has not done enough. They have gone ahead calling out the platform for the harm it causes children by filing lawsuits against the short video social media platform.
