Wedding dress giant David’s Bridal has laid off a substantial number of its workforce. On Friday, in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications (WARN) notification to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, the bridal store stated revealed its first wave of staff members. It also revealed that it intends to lay off the remaining workers in two phases during the month of August.
According to the notification, the store is laying off 9,236 employees nationwide. The layoffs in Pennsylvania are scheduled to start on April 14 and terminate on August 11 and will affect fifteen locations across nine counties. When the layoffs would begin or how many stores would be impacted in other states were not specified in the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications. In the massive layoff drive, 9,236 workers will lose their jobs across the 300 David’s Bridal stores, reports say.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Conshohocken, Pennsylvania-based retailer employs over 11,000 people. According to a statement by David’s Bridal, the business is “evaluating our strategic options and a sale process is underway.” It added that all its stores are still open right now. According to a comparable WARN notice filed in Colorado, corporate employees were the first to lose their jobs. Field and retail personnel will be let go from June through August, while employees at the distribution center will face the axe in June.
Although the precise location of the layoffs is unknown, all employees may be impacted, according to the warnings. In the upcoming months, retailers might also start closing their doors. The layoffs occur as the wedding gown store’s issues worsen; according to The New York Times, which cited people familiar with the situation, the company is reportedly declaring bankruptcy for the second time in five years. The store may be considering a sale as part of its restructuring strategy, the outlet said.
In 2018, David’s Bridal declared bankruptcy due to mounting debt and dwindling wedding dress sales. It managed to emerge from bankruptcy in 2019 and kept working to improve the company. David’s Bridal’s layoffs coincide with continued employment losses in the retail, IT, and other sectors.
