400 Condé Nast union workers walk out and protest over layoff announcement.  The News Guild of New York said that over 400 unionized employees of several Conde Nast companies, including Vogue, GQ, and Vanity Fair, leave their jobs on Tuesday…

According to the union, the picket line “will feature an Oscars-nomination-style treatment with a red carpet, ‘step and repeat’ and more” to show support for the importance of media coverage of Hollywood. The picket line was timed purposely on the day of the Academy Awards Nominations for the Oscars announcements.

In 20% of the Condé Nast Union, 94 members are laid off.

Susan DeCarava, president of The News Guild of New York, reported, “Media workers at Conde? Nast is key to the company’s success and reputation for excellence. They deserve their work to be respected on the job and at the bargaining table.” “Guild members in Conde? Nast Union walked off the job today to remind management of their worth and urge company reps to bargain in good faith. We demand nothing less.”

Layoffs affect the nation’s most prominent news outlets, such as the Los Angeles Times. L.A. Times is laying off a minimum of 115 people in the newsroom. The Los Angeles Times reported in its article about letting go of staff, “The cuts were necessary because the paper could no longer lose $30 million to $40 million a year without making progress toward building a higher readership that would bring in advertising and subscriptions to sustain the organization, the paper’s owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, said Tuesday.
