Fauci says, ‘living with Covid’ a reality, expresses doubts on eradication of virus

0

White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci said in a recent interview that he believed that people would have to begin “living with COVID.” He also said that he had doubts that the virus could be eradicated in future.

On Sunday, the nation’s infectious disease expert appeared on the CBS show, “Face the Nation.” Speaking to the show’s host Margaret Brennan Fauci said that he would like to see a daily infection rate of cases in the U.S. to fall below 10,000 so that the nation could “live with COVID.”

When the host said that the current number of cases of COVID-19 infections were almost 80,000 per day, Fauci said that this was “unacceptable.” He said that it has been heard among people that “we’re going to have to start living with COVID.” He said that he also believed that it was the case and he didn’t think that anybody could eradicate it.

Dr. Fauci said that the only infection that humankind had managed to eradicate was smallpox. He also mentioned that a few illness had become almost nonexistent due to an extremely intensive and stringent vaccine campaigns. He said that the infections that had benefitted from such vaccine campaigns included malaria, polio and measles.

When asked if the nation was facing a fifth wave, he said that there was a “potential “ for it and that it would depend on what would be done in the next few weeks or the next couple of months.

He said that millions of Americans who were eligible to be vaccinated had not got their vaccine and some of those who had been vaccinated several months ago were facing decreasing immunity. He mentioned that both these factors were the reasons why there was a decreased immunity and increase in cases. It has been observed that vaccinated people can also get infected by COVID. However, the infection appears to be milder with minimal hospitalizations and rare fatalities.

A new virus strain of COVID-19 was detected in the southern regions of Africa and it was announced to the world by South Africa on Thursday. On Friday, the World Health Organization named in Omicron and called it a virus of concern. By the weekend, many European countries and the U.S. have banned flights from eight countries in the southern region of Africa.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson gifts personal truck F-15 Raptor to Navy veteran

0

Actor Dwayne Johnson recently gifted a Navy veteran, who is also a fan, his personal custom Ford-150 Raptor pickup. He shared the emotional moments where Oscar Rodriguez of Los Angeles was overwhelmed as he got the truck from The Rock, on social media.

An audience had gathered to watch Johnson’s Netflix hit film “Red Notice” on the big screen. He provided the audience with free concessions that included

shoes
tequila
energy drinks
ice cream.

This was not all that he provided. He went to the front of the auditorium and said that he had one special “unforgettable” gift for a fan who had impressed him. He called out the fan’s name as “Oscar Rodriguez.”

Rodriguez rushed to the front and received a huge hug from Johnson. Then the star read a long list of achievements of Rodriguez that included the following:

Rodriguez takes care of his 75-year old mother.
He’s a personal trainer, who helps people to get fit.
He’s a church leader.
He provides support and meals for women who have been victims of domestic violence.
He’s a Navy veteran.
He’s a kind human being.

Rodriguez said that he was “speechless” and that he felt “uplifted.” He also told The Rock that he followed him on Instagram.

Then Johnson asked Rodriguez to follow him outside where his customized F-15 Ford Raptor was parked. Rodriguez said that he recognized the truck from social media posts that showed Johnson in it.

Then Johnson told him, “It is my truck and now it’s your truck.”

Rodriguez started crying and was overwhelmed after receiving this one-of-a-kind gift.

Johnson posted the reason why he gave away his personal truck on Instagram. He said that he wanted to give the Navy vet the Porsche Taycan he drove in ‘Red Notice.” However, the automaker said no to the request of giving the car that was a part of the movie. So, Johnson decided to give his truck instead.

His post went viral and got more than a million likes and 53,000 comments on Instagram and Twitter. Ford CEO Jim Farley was one of them. He retweeted Dwayne Johnson’s post and added a personal message.

Several dozens of travelers from South Africa to Netherlands test positive for Covid on arrival

0

On Friday, two KLM flights reached Schiphol Airport carrying 600 passengers from Cape Town and Johannesburg. The Netherlands health authorities conducted COVID-19 tests and 61 of these passengers tested positive. These flights had left the airports before the Dutch government had stopped flights from the region due to concerns on the new variant Omicron which has recently emerged from the region.

These passengers were kept in separate areas, away from other travelers who had arrived at the airport from different destinations. Those who tested positive were isolated and moved to a hotel near the Dutch airport.

Those who tested positive have to undergo quarantine at a hotel for seven days if they exhibit symptoms and for five days if they did not have any symptoms. Those who tested negative have been requested to isolate for five days at their home and then get tested again. Those who were in transit were allowed to resume their journeys.

A Dutch health ministry spokesperson said that testing for the new variant was in process and the results would be available by late Saturday. A spokesperson for the Kennemerland health authorities said that the National Institute for Health (RIVM) was analyzing the positive cases. Schipol comes under Kennemerland region in the Netherlands.

Passengers on the flights said that they had to wait on the tarmac for hours and they had not been given food and water for a while.

Omicron, the new variant of COVID-19 was classified as a variant of concern, on Friday by the World Health Organization. Cases have already been seen in the U.K., Germany and other countries in the region. Europe has already seen an increase in COVID-19 cases before passengers with the new variant traveled to the bloc.

On Friday, the Dutch government announced partial lockdowns. Bars, restaurants and other stores would shut down earlier than before. The lockdowns will be put in place from 17:00 to 5:00 and are expected to continue at least up to December 19. The uprise in cases has swamped the health care system and curbs could help manage the growing number of cases as winter looms in the region.

Jeffrey Epstein’s companion Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial to begin Monday, accusers mention sexual exploitation

0

On Monday, a high profile trial is set to unfold as Ghislaine Maxwell, the long-time companion of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein will face charges. She has been accused of recruiting, grooming and exploiting girls who were 14 years and above for sexual abuse by Epstein and his high profile friends.

These alleged incidents of exploitation took place for a more than a decade from 1994 to 2004. They took place in locations across the globe including an Upper East Side home in Manhattan, New York City; an estate located at Palm Beach, Florida; a ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico and a home in London, England.

U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan of the Southern District of New York has allowed prosecutors to focus on one aspect of her alleged abuse. The British socialite-turned-suspect will be tried for allegedly helping Epstein recruit and abuse four girls who were underage during the nineteen nineties.

Prosecutors have indicated that opening statements will begin on Monday and the trial could go on for six weeks. Four grownup women, who were underage during their alleged sexual abuse, will take the stand. The prosecutors said that they will testify against Maxwell.

Maxwell is facing six of the eight criminal counts that are tied to alleged efforts to entice minors to travel and engage in illegal sex acts. She faces charges of conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. She also faces sex trafficking conspiracy charges.

In July 2020, Maxwell was arrested at a remote property in New Hampshire. According to reports, she tried to flee when she was being arrested by the FBI. She is being held without bail in a Brooklyn jail. The 59-year old can face several years in prison if she is convicted on all counts.

She has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking charges as well as related charges. She said that she was a former employee of Jeffrey Epstein and her job was to manage his portfolio of lavish properties that were spread across the world.

Twitter users blasted Seth Rogen for dismissing LA crime as ‘living in a big city’

Source Twitter Seth Rogen

Recently Seth Rogen faced a lot of backlash from Twitter users. He had been on a “back and forth” with YouTuber Casey Neistat. When Casey complained that his car “got robbed” Rogen called it “living in a big city.”

The Knocked Up actor got a lot of critical comments from Twitter users. One asked him not to downplay crime in the city while another commented that breaking into a car was a not big deal for a celebrity but was a big deal for someone who was not rich.

Another Twitter user called him “whitest privilege dude.” He was also called an “insufferable twit” which was liked 1,700 times. He was also called “out of touch” “privileged” and was said to have a “bad take” on crime”

The Neighbors star replied to all the negativity on Wednesday by posting that a lot of people came at him on Twitter and talked s**T hoping that he would engage with them and give them attention. He said that he sent a DM to them privately told them to go “f**k themselves” as that was a lot more fun.

The entire incident began when YouTuber Casey Neistat posted that someone had broken into his car and had robbed materials that were there for his daughter’s seventh birthday party. He called Los Angeles a “crime riddled 3rd world s**thole of a city.”

Seth Rogen replied to the tweet saying that he had lived in the city for two decades and that it was “lovely” in the city. He advised him not to leave anything valuable and said that it was “called living in a big city.”

The 40-year old YouTuber with 2 million followers who is reportedly worth $16 million, asked if he could still be mad.” Earlier, he said he had felt “so violated.”

The 39-year old comedian said that he could be mad but he didn’t see a car as an extension of himself and that he had never felt violated any of the 15 times that his car had been broken into. He also mentioned that “a guy accidentally left a cool knife” and that the YouTuber “might get a little treat in future.”

Neistat said that he “didn’t get any treats.” He also questioned Rogen on how his car was broken into 15 times.

Seth Rogen replied that he lived in West Hollywood for 20 years and that he had “parked on the street.”

Group of crypto fans want to buy NBA team through DAO

0

A group of crypto fans have come together to form a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called Krause House DAO. This online group has a collective bank account and its mission statement includes owning an NBA team.

The group is named after late Jerry Krause, the general manager of Chicago Bulls. About 2,000 members came together and raised cryptocurrency Ethereum equivalent to about $4 million as NFT sales. The crowdfunding operation ended on Thursday morning.

Two factors make it difficult for the group to reach their goal of buying an NBA team, as of now. The first one is that an NBA team generally costs more than a billion dollars. The second reason is that they could have difficulty in convincing the NBA that a crypto collective would be a good owner of an NBA team.

A co-creator of the DAO Krause House spoke to NPR using his pseudonym on the social network Discord. He said that the money raised would be invested into future products. He said that the DAO was focused on its objective of becoming a serious NBA bidder in future. The plan about how the money will be spent is not specific and light on details.

Members of the DAO will be able to vote on where the money will be spent. The final aim of the group is to show franchise owners that the group can provide an effective system to govern a basketball team.

In its Discord community, organizers update the group about activities and sign off with “WAGBAT.” The acronym stands for “We are going to buy a team.”

Earlier, a DAO tried to buy a rare copy of the Constitution but failed. There was a lot of chaos while dissolving the group. A huge amount of money has been lost as high transaction costs which are also called “gas fees.”

Is Tesla Model S Plaid fastest production vehicle? reaches quarter mile run in under 9 seconds

An American race car driver Christine Dodworth set a new record for the Tesla Model S Plaid, earlier this month at the Maryland International Raceway. The test drive took place during the Hot Rod Magazine Dragweek, according to a report by electrek.

The Tesla Plaid S that achieved an 8.994-second time came in at 155.10 miles per hour. The electric vehicle had a few modifications. The passenger seat was removed for weight modification. The team of George and Christine Dodworth added performance oriented wheels and tires but the vehicle did not have powertrain or body modifications.

No other car has achieved such a speed by removing the front seat and changing tires, without significant powertrain modifications. The only vehicle that is faster than Tesla’s Plaid S is Rimac’s new Nevera. A Tesla Plaid S basic model starts at $130,000 while a Nevera is a limited production vehicle whose basic model costs is $2 million.

This latest record by the Tesla S has made it the second fastest electric car in the world, to date. The 2021 Rimac Nevera used four electric motors. It achieved an 8.6 and 8.7 quarter mile run earlier this year.

Earlier, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla had said that the Tesla Model S Plaid could complete a quarter mile in 9.23 seconds. With a few basic modifications, George and Christine Dodworth posted a video showing that it could use a fraction less of time to run a quarter mile.

However, one one major factor in both the production vehicles is that they are all-electric vehicles. This indicates that higher speeds might be reached when electric vehicles continue to improve as researchers continue to make improvements on them.

In September, a Tesla Model S Plaid completed a full lap in the Nurburgring Nordschleife track. It completed the 13-mile long lap in seven minutes and 35.579 seconds. Earlier in 2019, a Porsche Taycan Turbo completed the lap in seven minutes and 42 seconds.

China comes down hard on celebrity culture and fandom

0

Beijing has been increasing its crackdown on both celebrities and their fans through regulators saying that online groups are responsible for creating “chaos.” They say that these celebrities promote “extravagant pleasure” to their fans. On Tuesday, the Cyberspace Administration of China released a set of rules that would curb celebrities as well as advertising and fan groups related to them. This is a part of a drive to reform social values in China led by its president Xi Jinping.

The new rules could ban pages run by fans. Professional celebrity agents are expected to manage celebrities. There will be a limit imposed on the number of times celebrities as well as the works or products associated with them can appear on webpages. Celebrities are also forbidden from publishing false or private information. Their actions should not provoke fan groups against each other nor can they spread rumors.

They also seek to curb the problems that arise from fandom as millions follow celebrities and gather together as fan armies online. Online platforms in the country cannot promote celebrities who have been implicated in illegal or unethical behavior. There can be no comeback for celebrities, after being publicly disgraced.

In August Beijing released a list of “misbehaving celebrities.” Prominent stars including 45-year old Zhao Wei have been censored. Thirty-year old Zheng Shuang has also been targeted was fined $46 million for tax evasion. Producers have been told to boycott the star as the administration had said that she cannot be hired for future shows. Another popular celebrity who has lost celebrity status was Canadian-Chinese pop star Kris Wu. Earlier this year, the star had been arrested on the suspicion of rape.

Experts say that Beijing is concerned about the capabilities of these groups to organize themselves and take social action. Authorities want to have a larger amount of control on cultural industries. However, others also say that they might not be able to curb celebrity activity as much as they would want to.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother’s message on Thanksgiving Day: ‘We got justice’

0

On Thursday, Ahmed Arbery’s mother was thankful as they finally received news on Wednesday that the three white men who chased and killed her son were convicted. The Georgia resident said that although it was the second Thanksgiving they’d had without Ahmaud, at the same time they were thankful.

In an interview on Thursday, Wanda Cooper-Jones, who is Arbery’s mother, also told the Associated Press that it was “the first Thanksgiving we are saying we got justice for Ahmaud.”

She said that they had planned to have a quiet Thanksgiving. She said that that they were not sure whether they would make his favorite dishes such as pork chops and butter beans on Thursday. However, she mentioned that they would be making these dishes soon as they were her son’s favorites for Sunday dinner.

In February 2020, three white men cornered Ahmaud Arbery as he had been seen on a surveillance camera at a house that was under construction in the neighborhood. They wanted to question him about recent burglaries that had taken taken place in the vicinity.

Arbery had run through the neighborhood and other places near his home to clear his head. He had nothing in his hands. He ran from these men for about five minutes. Then, one of these men shot him three times, at close range, with a shotgun.

They were later sentenced to face life in prison. In February, they will also face a federal hate crimes trial.

When asked if she had a message for the three men who were convicted, according to a report by abc News Cooper-Jones said, “I would simply tell them that their bad decisions have impacted two families –my family and again their family.”

Georgia became the 47th state in the nation that passed a hate crimes law after the death of Ahmaud Arbery. The state legislature also repealed the citizen’s arrest law. The defense tried to use this law to justify the chase.

Cooper-Jones said, “When they hear my son’s name, they will say, this young man, he lost his life but he did bring change.”

Scientists worried about probable“Nu”-est Covid variant emerging from Southern Africa

0

A new variant of COVID-19 has recently emerged from the southern regions of Africa. Major effects of this as yet fairly unknown variant has not been seen but the mutations of its spike protein has alarmed scientists in some countries. This has led to a ban in travel from this region on Thursday and Friday, by some countries, as a precautionary measure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a meeting of the scientific community to discuss the new variant, on Friday. If it is considered to be of importance, it could be named “Nu” continuing with the trend of naming variants using the Greek alphabet. WHO will decide about “Nu” and also whether it will be classified as a variant of concern or as a variant of interest.

First isolated in Botswana, the newest isolated variant B.1.1.529 is said to have twice as many mutations those that are seen on the delta variant. It reportedly spread from Botswana to South Africa and has infected people who traveled to Hong Kong from the region. The travelers had been reportedly vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine.

The delta variant is currently the largest spreading variant of COVID-19, all over the world. Although much is still unknown about the new variant, scientists believe that larger numbers of mutations on spike proteins might help the virus to more easily avoid the body’s immune response.

The new variant has infected a large number of people in Gauteng province in South Africa, which includes Johannesburg. There has been a spike of cases in November in schools as well as among young people.

Researchers in South Africa are tracking the spread of B.1.1.529 in South Africa as well as other regions where it is spreading. They are planning to test its ability to escape from infection-blocking antibodies. They will also study its severity and transmissibility.

The U.K., Israel, Singapore, Germany and Italy have already banned flights from the southern region of Africa and other countries are expected to do so, as well. Scientists are divided in opinion about such bans as some say that the virus will potentially spread throughout the globe whether bans are enforced or not enforced, while others believe that bans are essential to stop the spread of new variants.
