GoFundMe removes $5M fundraiser for Waukesha SUV killer suspect Darrell Brooks

0

GoFundMe removed a page that was set up by someone under the name James Norton of Waukesha. The page attempted to raise five million dollars for bail for Darrell Brooks, who has been arrested as the suspect who drove a red SUV through a holiday parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin killing five and injuring many on Sunday.

Brooks was charged with five counts of homicide and was arraigned on Tuesday. Bail was set at $5 million and this created anger as he has a long rap sheet. He had been out on bail earlier this month after being accused of intentionally trying to run over a woman with his car.

The GoFundMe page that was removed stated that Darrell would never do such a thing and that he was innocent of the charges. The page said that there was more to the story and that funds needed to be raised so that Darrell could tell his side of the story. The page ended with hashtags of BLM and IStandWith Darrell and more.

A spokesperson for GoFundMe told several news outlets that the page had been taken down as it had violated its terms of service. Norton had also been banned from the site.

The spokesperson also said that fundraisers with misuse were very rare and the site took all complaints very seriously. They also worked with law enforcement to report issues and had assisted them in any investigations that were deemed necessary by law enforcers.

The company also noted that its terms of service “prohibit raising money for the legal defense of an alleged crime.”

Earlier, five people between the ages of 52 to 81 had died within hours after a Red SUV allegedly driven by Darrell Brooks sped right into a holiday parade on November 21 and killed five persons and injured 48, many of whom were children and the elderly. A sixth person–an 8-year old boy, died on Tuesday and the number of injured persons is now at 62.

Bill Gates recommends 5 books to read during the 2021 holiday season

0

Bill Gates, philanthropist and founder of Microsoft has recommended five books that that you might to add to your holiday reading list. In a blog post Gates explained his choices. He said that he chose two science fiction books as he was “obsessed” with the genre when he was a child. He also mentioned that although he focused more on non fiction as he added years to his life, he recently found that he had been “drawn back to the kinds of books I would have loved as a kid.”

He also mentioned the innumerable hours he spent discussing the “Foundation” trilogy by Issac Asimov with the late Paul Allen, who was not one of the co-founders of Microsoft–the hardware and software company they formed decades ago but was also a childhood friend.

The five books recommended by Microsoft founder Bill Gates are as follows:

Kiara and the Sun

By Kazuo Ishiguro

This is the story of a solar powered robot Kiara, who is the companion of a child who is gravely ill. It is set in a dystopian future. The robot is an artificial friend of the American child. Gates said that the book made him ponder about what life would be with “super intelligent robots.”

Project Hail Mary

By Andy Weir

The storyline follows a high school teacher who is placed in a difficult situation in outer space. Gates doesn’t say much about the book as he didn’t want to give away the twists in the plots. However, he calls it a “fun read.”

A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence

By Jeff Hawkins

Hawkins a machine learning expert explains how people think about intelligence and how the brain works. He also discusses what would be required to develop a true artificial intelligence. Gates lauds the “fascinating insights” about the brain in the book as well as the “clues” it offers “about the future of intelligent machines.”

The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing and the Future of the Human Race

By Walter Issacson

This book is a biography of Jennifer Doudna, the 2020 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry for her work on CRISPR gene-editing system. Gates called CRISPR “one of the coolest…scientific breakthroughs of the last decade.”

Hamnet

By Maggie O’Farrell

The author writes a fictional account of the life of William Shakespeare’s son Hamnet, who died when he was 11 years old. O’Farrell explores how his son’s death might have influenced the Bard while he wrote one of his most popular tragedies–Hamlet. Gates called the book “beautiful” and “well-written” as it looks at “how grief tears a family apart.”

Weekly jobless claims reach 1969 levels at 199,000: lowest in more than 5 decades

0

The latest weekly jobless claims have beaten expectations of economists by more than 60,000. Although the latest weekly data was released on Wednesday, one day earlier than usual, it was because of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. The weekly jobless claims stood at 199,000; much lower that the 260,000 estimate given by economists.

Continuing claims for regular state unemployment benefits levels are also promising. They run a week behind. These claims also decreased and now stand at 2.05 million. They are also slowly inching towards pre-pandemic levels. These claims are also a pandemic-era low. It indicates that the labor market is tightening.

Last week the claims were at the lowest level since March 2020, when the pandemic affected the labor market. The recent continuing claims are also coming closer to the 2019 average of approximately 1.7 million per week.

The trend of falling weekly jobless claims has been attributed to some extent to employers holding on to their employees. The labor market is tight and employers are offering higher than usual wages as well as perquisites to retain their employees. There is a a shortage of employees in almost all sectors. Holding on to their current employees with increased benefits plus offering good wages to new hires has become a part of companies’ strategies.

Although the economy has not reached pre-pandemic levels as it is still short by around 4 million jobs, the latest monthly employment statistics said that 531,000 jobs were added last month. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported that the unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent; the earlier rate was 4.8 percent.

The improved labor market could lead to an early tapering by the Federal Reserve. Fed chair, Jeremy Powell, who was recently nominated for a second term by President Biden, announced that the Fed could accelerate its tapering schedule, depending on the outlook of the market.

Travis Scott has ventured out of Texas after the Astroworld tragedy, a few weeks ago and headed to California during the holiday weekend. He was seen at the links with Michael Jordan, Mark Wahlberg, Corey Gamble and Said Taghmaoui.

The group was said to have been seen at the golf course that is next to a gated community in Palm Springs where Kris Jenner has a home. He is spending time with Kylie Jenner and her family for the Thanksgiving holiday, in this trip to Southern California. Travis Scott is dating Kylie Jenner.

This is the first time Travis has been seen in public after the tragedy on November 5, where 10 people were killed during his performance. He was holed up in his Houston mansion for weeks and was seen outside his home but not in public.

There are photos of Travis Scott that show him hanging out with Kris Jenner’s boyfriend Corey Gamble. He is also seen with French-American actor Said Taghmaoui, who is also seen in pictures with Michael Jordan. The pictures were reportedly taken at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California.

Ed McPherson, who is Travis Scott’s lawyer, told TMZ that the rapper had not known that many people had died during his performances. He reportedly came to know about the deaths and injuries, several hours after his show got over. He said that he would pay for all the funeral expenses but at least one victim’s family rejected his offer.

The rapper has been sued by multiple victims’ families who lost their family members in the tragedy that unfolded at Astroworld. There was a huge surge around 9:15 p.m. on November 5, at the NRG Park in Houston, Texas, which resulted in several deaths that very day and hundreds were injured.

Many concertgoers who were injured and faced both physical and mental traumas have also filed lawsuits against the rapper, Live Nation, Apple and other organizers who were involved in hosting the musical events. The amounts sued for damages and more has reportedly crossed a billion.

New center-left coalition in Germany: SPD Olaf Scholz to take over chancellorship from Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel will step down from the position of Chancellor of Germany after 16 years of rule. However, she will not be succeeded by a member of her own ruling coalition. Instead Olaf Scholz, the candidate from the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) will be the new chancellor of the country.

Wednesday afternoon, three parties the SPD, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Green Party announced a coalition that is expected to govern the country. Negotiations behind closed doors have been taking place from over a month after the September 26 elections. However, the leaders of the political parties did not divulge any details, till Wednesday.

The announcement not only mentioned that Olaf Scholz would be the next chancellor but also stated that the finance minister would be Christian Linder, the head of the FDP. Annalena Baerbock of the Green Party will be the Foreign Minister and Robert Habeck, also of the Green Party, will be the Economy and Climate Minister.

Scholz is expected to take over the leadership next month. Although there is some talk about change, many measures that have been taken under the leadership of Angela Merkel could remain the same. Scholz has been the finance minister under Merkel’s leadership and some say that he has adapted a similar style, after working with her for years.

The coalition, called the traffic-light coalition due to traditional party colors–Red for the SDP, yellow for the FDP and of course green for the Green Party, was expected to form the new government and strove to maintain an optimistic outlook about their talks for a coalition. However, it took five weeks of behind the scenes negotiations, following which there was a formal announcement.

After being sworn in as the German Chancellor, Scholz will not only face border tensions and shifting foreign policy but will also have to tackle the surge of COVID-19 across Germany. Europe is seeing a reemergence of coronavirus cases. The new chancellor and his administration will have to focus, once again, on vaccination drives, possible lockdowns, slowing of the economy and more.

Authorities are working on repairing Brian’s  notebook found at the scene in  dry bag near his body in the investigation of his death. Cell phone records are   crucial part in investigating his death. Gabby Petito’s family believes that Brian laundry was impersonating her in text messages to confuse the police, thinking that she was still alive.

Blue Origin to launch trip to space with Michael Strahan and Laura Shepard Churchley

Image Twitter

Blue Origin, the space company that sends paying passengers to space for a brief period of time, is preparing to launch its third trip to space, next month. This time as well, it will launch famous people free and rich people as paying tourists. Earlier, it had tried to combine the two by offering Tom Hanks a rich and famous actor a paid seat on the second trip but he was not interested in the approximately $28 million price tag for a space trip that would last 12 minutes or more.

The third trip by Blue Origin to space will include six humans, four of whom will pay for the trip and two of whom, who have fame if not fortune attached to their names and will make the trip free. These passengers will fly on the New Shepard reusable rocket and capsule on December 9.

The six passengers are

Michael Strahan–co-host of Good Morning America
Laura Shepard Churchley–daughter of Alan Shepard, the rocket is named after him
Dylan Taylor–Voyager Space CEO
Evan Dick–Dick Holdings managing member
Father and child pair–Lane Bess of Bess Ventures and Advisory and Cameron Bess–content creator

Although the founder of Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos could not be the first billionaire and private citizen to reach space as Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic with the billionaire on board reached space before Blue Origin’s Shepard rocket, the company has been adding other firsts to its space flights. It has sent the oldest and youngest person to space. It sent William Shatner of Star Trek fame to space and it will send the first father-son duo in its third trip to space.

Passengers fly to the edge of space in Blue Origin’s New Shepard. They remain in sub-orbital space for a few minutes. They experience weightlessness and see beautiful views of planet earth from space. Then the capsule returns to earth and lands in the West Texas desert.

Space travel evokes mixed reactions of awe or humor depending on whether you are in sync with William Shatner, who described his free trip as “unbelievable” or with Tom Hanks who entertained millions as he simulated a space trip on Jimmy Kimmel’s sofa, saying that anyone could simulate a space flight at home.

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom And Family Go Out Of The Nation For Thanksgiving

0

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, has left California for a trip to Mexico for the Thanksgiving holidays along with his family. Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis will be the acting governor of the Golden State, as is the requirement as per the constitution of the state, when Newsom is away from the state, even if it is for a few hours.

On Monday, the Governor’s office announced that he would be taking a trip out of California to Mexico, with his family during Thanksgiving. He is expected to return to the state on Sunday.

Earlier, on Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom held a news conference in San Francisco. He was visiting a vaccine clinic. He commented on the several smash and grab robberies that had recently taken place in the Bay Area. He said that the thieves should be prosecuted.

He called the robberies “crimes of opportunity” and said that they were “well organized.” He said that the robbers needed “to be held to account.”

A few days earlier, thieves targeted high end luxury stores such as Louis Vuitton and more. They used crowbars to smash and grab luxury goods from several stores in Union Street on Friday. Other stores that reported robberies included Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry, Bloomingdale’s, Jin’s Eyewear and Walgreens on Market Street.

Earlier in the month, Governor Gavin Newsom had faced criticism for not disclosing where he was for a week. The governor of California withdrew his attendance at the high profile climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, at the last minute saying that he had “family obligations.” His attendance at the international conference had been scheduled well in advance.

Governor Newsom was not seen in public events for 12 days. His office did not respond to queries. Later, Newsom responded saying that he had canceled his trip in order to go trick or treating on Halloween with his four young children.

He said that he was surprised that his critics wondered where he was as he had worked at his office at the Capitol during that period of time. However, this time around his office has announced his absence from California and the U.S., in order to avoid criticism or misunderstandings.

President Biden announces release from SPR to lower prices and address worldwide low oil supply

0

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced that the Department of Energy would release 50 million barrels of oil for Americans. The Department of Energy will use oil that is in its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) so that the nation can see a lowering in gas prices that have soared in the past few weeks.

According to the White House, the release of oil will also “address the mismatch between demand exiting the pandemic and supply.” President Biden has worked with countries around the world who will also release supplies in parallel with the U.S. Some of these countries who will also release their reserves are the following:

China
India
The United Kingdom
Japan
Republic of Korea.

As the diplomatic initiative led by the President became public, there has been an almost 10 percent decrease in price. With the release of additional supplies from reserves in countries across the world, oil prices are expected to see a further drop.

The U.S. Department of Energy is expected to release the oil in two ways:

32 million barrels of oil will be an exchange over months. Oil will be released and will return to the SPR in the future, over several years, for future needs. It will help provide Americans with immediate relief.

18 million barrels will be an acceleration into the coming months of a sale of oil. The Congress had already authorized the sale.

The White House also said that Biden would focus on how consolidation in the energy sector of oil and gas might result in anti-competitive practices that prevent Americans from getting the benefits of lower prices of oil and gas in order to pump more gas and have lower heating bills.

The White House press release also mentioned the President’s clean energy goals. The administration will invest in combating climate change. It is planning to make America a zero-emission economy by 2050 and to reduce the nation’s dependency on foreign fossil fuels.
