Cláudia Celeste, the first transgender actress to participate in Brazilian telenovelas, is honored by Google. On this day in 1988, Cláudia made her on-screen debut as an openly transgender woman in the premiere of “Olho por Olho.”

She appeared in two Brazilian movies in 1982: “Punk’s, Os Filhos da Noite” by Levi Salgado and “Beijo na Boca” by Paulo Sérgio de Almeida.

She performed in countless plays, including Febre, Bonecas con Tudo em Cima, and Gay Fantasy, which was directed by Bibi Ferreira and debuted in 1982. She appeared in two Brazilian movies in 1982: “Punk’s, Os Filhos da Noite” by Levi Salgado and “Beijo na Boca” by Paulo Sérgio de Almeida.

As  a singer, dancer, director, producer, and author, as well as a beauty pageant winner and organizer, Celeste became an inspiring figure who opened the door for future generations of transgender and LGBTQ+ talent in Brazil, despite the obstacles and challenges she faced.

Despite facing discrimination and being fired from the cast after management “found out” about her trans identity, she persevered and pursued new opportunities for the remainder of her career, solidifying her reputation as a trailblazer who fought for the rights of transgender and LGBTQ+ performers worldwide.

When Carlos Imperial saw her show “Once Upon a Time in Carnival” at Teatro Rival in 1973, he gave her the stage name Cláudia Celeste.

She started out as a dancer at the nightclub “Beco das Garrafas.” In 1973, the Teatro Rival in Rio de Janeiro became the first to obtain a government license to perform “O Mundo é das Bonecas.” Cláudia Celeste, along with other well-known transgender actors, was cast as a lead. Following the success of the show, other productions recognized her talents and offered her opportunities to dance in many Brazilian nightclubs.

Cláudia Celeste decided to compete in the Miss Brazil Pop pageant in 1976 and won. After seeing one of her performances at the Teatro Rival, she was invited to appear in the soap opera “Magic Mirror” a year later.

No one on the cast or crew was aware of her transsexual identity, and after her first scene, the news received unfavorable press. Soon later, the show was cancelled, and she relocated to Europe to look for other chances.
