In an announcement on Thursday, figure AI, a startup building humanoid robots, has received hundreds of millions in funding from investors such as Jeff Bezos, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon. The AI startup is building humanoid robots to perform tasks and jobs that are both dangerous and undesirable for humans. The Thursday announcement of funding by these large investors by Figure AI which already has other investors has given the startup a reported value of $2.6 billion.

Figure AI was founded in 2022 by CEO Brett Adcock. He is a veteran startup founder who started Vettery, an online talent marketplace. The Adecco Group acquired it for $100 million in 2018. Adcock was also the founder of Archer Aviation, a publicly traded company. It develops electrical vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Sunnyvale California based startup Figure AI has already developed a general purpose robot. Called Figure 01, this robot looks and moves like a human. It is expected to be used in industries with severe labor shortages, including manufacturing, shipping, warehousing, etc.

Figure AI recently released a video that showed Figure 01 in action. The robot is attached to a rope. It walks on two legs and has five fingers in its hands. It uses its fingers to lift a plastic crate. It walks a few steps and then places the box on a conveyor belt.

Many companies are in the upcoming field of human robotics. The ones that have developed such robots include Amazon-backed Agility Robotics, which is planning to open a factory to manufacture its bipedal Digit robots. It is aiming to produce up to 10,000 of such robots per year.

Robotics company Boston Dynamics has also developed multiple robot models. Norwegian startup 1X Technologies has recently raised $100 million in funding and is backed by OpenAI.
