The nation has honored two former presidents, George W Bush and Bill Clinton, by naming two Navy aircraft after them. The White House made the Monday announcement on the traditional honor. These future carriers will replace older ones nearing 50 years in service of the nation. Some modern Navy aircraft carriers in the country have been named after US Presidents. The Navy secretary has the authority to name ships in the US Navy.
According to the White House announcement, President Biden said, “I am proud to announce that the next two Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers will be named after two former presidents: Bill Clinton and George W Bush” and more.
The statement also mentioned that the former presidents were “deeply humbled” when Biden delivered the news and more. The future carriers will be called “USS William J. Clinton (CVN 82)” and “USS George W. Bush (CVN 83).”
The statement also said that these carriers would be constructed in the future years, and it ended by saying, “And may God continue to bless our troops.”
In a statement, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that aircraft carriers “are the centerpiece of America’s naval forces.”
Austin also noted that the new ships would “serve as lasting tributes” to the leaders of whom they have been named and would showcase their legacy of service to the nation.
In a statement, former President George W Bush said he was “honored” that his name would be “associated with the United States Navy and a symbol of our nation’s might.”
He also said, “I have a special admiration for the men and women of our Navy—including my dad—and ask God to watch over this ship and those who sail aboard her.”
Former President George W. Bush’s father, former President H. W. Bush also has an aircraft carrier named after him. It is an older Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
