According to Forbes, the richest woman in the world is an American billionaire. The popular site that lists the net worth of the world’s richest people has said that Alice Walton has regained the number one spot. The Walmart (WMT) heiress had been dethroned about five years ago by the L’Oreal heiress from Paris, France, but she has regained the top spot for the second time these past few years.
Forbes reported earlier this month that Texan billionaire Alice Walton is now the richest woman, as her net worth has crossed that of Françoise Bettencourt Meyers of Paris, France. Forbes says that Alice Walton‘s fortune is worth $89.1 billion, while Françoise Bettencourt Meyers has a fortune of $88.4 billion.
Walton and Meyers have been close matches for years, alternately holding the richest woman position. Meyers dethroned Walton in 2019, but the Walmart heiress regained the top position in 2020. Meyers was back at Number 1 in 2022, and Walton was back at Number 1 in 2024.
The Walmart heiress and the L’Oreal heiress have played musical chairs with the Number 1 and Number 2 positions for decades. However, a new entrant, American Julia Koch of Koch Industries, came in between the two billionaire heiresses when she was in the Number 2 position in 2023, putting Alice Walton in third place among the top three wealthiest women in the world.
Alice Walton, Sam Walton’s only daughter, is an American philanthropist who has strived to combine art and wellness. 2005, she founded the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Alice Walton said, “Everybody deserves access to art. Art is hope. It’s opportunity, it’s education, it’s all of the things we want.”
Alice Walton has another major project: the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine in Bentonville, Texas. The 134-acre space includes healing and learning facilities, including the Heartland Whole Health Institute and the Art Bridges Foundation.
