Matt Freese made five saves, including a sensational double stop that began with a penalty kick, to help visiting New York City FC earn a 1-1 draw at the New England Revolution on Sunday afternoon in Foxborough, Mass.

James Sands scored the equalizing goal in first-half stoppage time for NYCFC (7-8-6, 27 points), who moved a point above the rival New York Red Bulls for sole possession of seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

The draw also halted New York City’s four-match losing streak across all competitions.

Dor Turgeman opened the scoring for New England (10-7-4, 34 points), which failed in its bid to win consecutive matches for the first time since early May and remained fourth in the East, two points behind Chicago.

The Revs’ Matt Turner made four stops in a meeting of the first- and second-choice goalkeepers from the United States’ 2026 World Cup squad. Freese started four of the Americans’ five matches in the tournament, while Turner played in the group stage finale, a 3-2 loss to Turkey.

While it came before either goal, Freese’s 27th-minute intervention was arguably the moment of the match.

With Carles Gil trying to improve to 5-for-5 from the spot this season, Freese dove left to deny the initial penalty, then somehow righted himself in time to make a sprawling save on the rebound.

Turgeman pulled New England in front nine minutes later with his fifth goal of the campaign, tying him with Alhassan Yusuf for the second-most by a Revs player.

Diego Fagundez was the primary creator, cutting back to elude a defender during a diagonal dribbling run before playing a ball to Peyton Miller at the back post. Miller poked the ball to the right for Turgeman, who thumped a first-time finish past Freese from close range.

Sands pulled NYCFC level in the first minute of second-half stoppage time on an equally well-worked corner kick.

Nicolas Fernandez Mercau sent the service to the back corner of the 6-yard box. Talles Magno met it with a downward header that Sands reached with an outstretched leg to stab over the line from about two yards away.
