The San Jose Earthquakes acquired playmaking midfielder Eduard Lowen from St. Louis City on Wednesday for $425,000 in general allocation money and up to $500,000 in conditional GAM, pending performance-based incentives.

Lowen, 29, was in his fourth season with St. Louis City and had 20 goals and 27 assists in 84 MLS matches (70 starts). He had 17 assists in 2023 when then-expansion St. Louis City finished first in the Western Conference.

“I’m very thankful for this new chapter in my life and career moving to the Bay Area and joining the Earthquakes,” Lowen said in a news release. “I’ll always be grateful for the amazing time I had in St. Louis.

“I’m excited to build new relationships here in the community and am determined to help this team make a strong playoff push and be successful with this historic club.”

San Jose coach Bruce Arena expects Lowen to be a difference-maker.

“Eduard is a proven player in this league with the versatility and experience to make an impact in our midfield,” Arena said in a news release. “Beyond what he brings on the field, he’s a great person with strong character and leadership qualities. We’re excited to have him in San Jose and look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Lowen had three goals and three assists in 13 matches (eight starts) this season.

“Decisions like this are never easy, but we are incredibly grateful for everything Edu has given to this club and for the player and person he has shown himself to be throughout his time in St. Louis,” St. Louis City sporting director Corey Wray said in a news release.

Lowen played for Germany’s 2020 Olympic team and his club stops include playing four seasons (2017-21) in the Bundesliga.

San Jose visits the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.
