FIFA News: Note of pride says Iran World Cup team leaves L.A. with ‘dignity’

A representative for Iran’s national soccer team left a note in the locker room Sunday showing appreciation to Los Angeles, while mentioning peace and global unity, after a scoreless draw against Belgium in a World Cup Group G match.

Iran played each of its first two matches at Inglewood, Calif., amid political tension after the United States and Israel launched a coordinated attack on Iran in February.

“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilised Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast,” read the note, which was released by the Football Federation of Iran.

“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour, and leave with dignity.

“Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality. And thank you to every Iranian who gave their heart, voice, and soul for Iran throughout these 180 minutes.

“May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations.”

Despite demanding travel requirements, Iran played in a home away from home to open the World Cup. There was fan support in large numbers in a city that has earned a portmanteau nickname of “Tehrangeles” because it boasts the largest Iranian population outside or Iran.

U.S. restrictions surrounding Iran’s participation require the team to stay at their home base in Tijuana, Mexico, until at least 24 hours before each match and return immediately after each match.

Iran announced over the weekend they would be making a complaint with FIFA about the requirements, with manager Amir Ghalenoel saying Iran are “the most oppressed team in the whole World Cup”.

And yet Iran earned a draw in each of their first two matches and can advance to the knockout stage for the first time in history with a win — and potentially a draw — against Egypt in their final Group G match Friday at Seattle.
