Jeff Beck, the guitarist who rose to prominence with the Yardbirds and later headed the Jeff Beck Group, died on January 10 at the age of 78 after developing bacterial meningitis. Beck’s family’s spokesperson statement read, “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

Johnny Depp was by Jeff’s side together with a few other rock musicians before Beck’s death. Beck was named the fifth best guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2015, one position ahead of blues legend BB King. Beck’s final album, 18, was published in 2022, and it was a 13-track collection of primarily cover songs with Hollywood actor Johnny Depp.

Bacterial meningitis occurs when germs enter the tissues (meninges) that surround the brain and spinal cord. The infection around the brain can cause swelling and inflammation, interfering with how the brain works.

Geoffrey Arnold Beck was born on 24 June 1944 who was an English guitarist who rose to popularity as a member of the Yardbirds and later created and headed the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. In 1975, he shifted to an instrumental form of music with a concentration on an inventive sound, and his albums encompassed genres and styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion, and a blend of guitar-rock and electronica.

Beck gained widespread critical acclaim and six Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and one for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. He was awarded the British Academy’s Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 2014. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a member of the Yardbirds and once as a solo artist (2009).

The Yardbirds hired Beck to replace Eric Clapton in March 1965, based on the recommendation of fellow session musician Jimmy Page, who had been their first choice. The Yardbirds produced the majority of their Top 40 hit songs during Beck’s brief but vital 20-month time with the band, affording him only one full album, Roger the Engineer (named Over Under Sideways Down in the United States), which was released in 1966.

Beck earned his first GRAMMY for 1985 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Escape

Beck received his third Grammy Award, this time for ‘Best Rock Instrumental Performance’ for “Dirty Mind” from You Had It Coming (2000)

Beck was a prominent guitarist from the 60’s all the way up to the 2000’s. Jeff Beck was one of the great guitarists of all time.
