Jeff Beck, the guitarist who rose to prominence with the Yardbirds and later headed the Jeff Beck Group, died on January 10 at the age of 78 after developing bacterial meningitis. Beck’s family’s spokesperson statement read, “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”
Johnny Depp was by Jeff’s side together with a few other rock musicians before Beck’s death. Beck was named the fifth best guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2015, one position ahead of blues legend BB King. Beck’s final album, 18, was published in 2022, and it was a 13-track collection of primarily cover songs with Hollywood actor Johnny Depp.
Bacterial meningitis occurs when germs enter the tissues (meninges) that surround the brain and spinal cord. The infection around the brain can cause swelling and inflammation, interfering with how the brain works.
