Davis Alexander will look to match a CFL record for consecutive starts with a victory on Saturday when he guides the Montreal Alouettes into Edmonton to face the Elks.
The quarterback improved to 13-0 in the regular season with a pair of impressive victories to the start the campaign for the Alouettes (2-0). A win on Saturday would level Alexander with Bo Levi Mitchell, who went 14-0 in 2016 with the Calgary Stampeders.
Alexander threw for a career-high 441 yards in a 37-30 victory over Toronto Argonauts on June 12. He leads the CFL with 777 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 70% of his passes.
Alexander has found familiar targets in Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead, who reside Nos. 1 and No. 2 in the CFL in both catches (16, 14) and receiving yards (269, 225).
“I have great chemistry with (Alexander), and you guys see that,” Philpot said, per the Montreal Gazette. “This is me speaking, but I trust Davis every time. … We know who’s the best (quarterback) in the league. He proves it day in and day out. There’s nobody else I’d rather play for.”
While the Alouettes are bidding to begin their third straight season with a 3-0 record, Edmonton is looking for its first 2-0 start since the 2019 campaign.
The Elks (1-0) have been idle since former Alouette Cody Fajardo guided the club to a 29-21 season-opening victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on June 6.
Free-agent acquisition Austin Mack reeled in a touchdown pass in that game and will face his former team for the first time on Saturday. Mack and Fajardo won a Grey Cup with Montreal in 2023, with the latter capturing Grey Cup MVP honors.
“A hundred percent. That’s one of the main reasons I wanted to sign here. To be with a guy like that,” Mack said, per the Edmonton Journal. “He’s a great, hell of a player and he’s just somebody that’s gritty.”
