Two further infant deaths were reported shortly after the 2021 recall, prompting CPSC and The Boppy Company to urge consumers to stop using recalled Boppy newborn loungers and to ask online retailers to stop selling the recalled product. The selling of all of Boppy’s infant loungers became illegal after the recall.
Customers are being urged to avoid using the recalled Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Boppy Company, of Golden, Colorado. The possibility that infants could suffocate if they roll, move, are put on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow, led to the recall of the newborn loungers in September 2021.
CPSC and Boppy have repeatedly asked Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces to remove the recalled goods since the Newborn Loungers have not been permitted for sale since they were recalled. Additionally, the government put pressure on Facebook to stop selling the recalled Boppy loungers on Facebook Marketplace by claiming that, on average, it discovers 1,000 of the items there each month.
In a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, the commissioners at the
United States Consumer Product Safety Commission urged him to find recalled and illegal products and stop your users from displaying them. “You are endangering Facebook Marketplace users by allowing such products to be posted,” the message read. Please ask Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces to take down the recalled products that are still being sold there. Selling or giving away a CPSC-recalled product in any other way, including through an internet marketplace, is prohibited.”
Facebook does immediately remove listings flagged by the CPSC. Facebook spokespeople said many sellers are unaware that a product is in recall, but we do take steps to prevent people from searching for those items by restricting keywords. That is just one of the steps taken to keep the Facebook marketplace safe.
