In case, you have wondered which is the favorite sandwich of Queen Elizabeth II, the answer is simple, a penny jam sandwich. Former royal chef Darren McGrady confirmed that the Queen does love her jam sandwiches, in a social media video. He guided viewers through a typical afternoon tea at the palace and mentioned a few recipes of sandwiches served at Buckingham Palace for tea.
Chef McGrady mentioned the Queen’s favorite, since she was in the nursery and said that she has had jam pennies, ever since she was a little girl. He said that it was easy to make these sandwiches as all they required was bread, butter and jam. The sandwiches would be cut into the shape of old British pennies.
The former royal chef also mentioned that the jam used was strawberry jam. It was made using fresh, yummy, Scottish strawberries from the royal garden.
The chef also mentioned other royal afternoon tea sandwiches that had diverse fillings including cucumber with a minty cheese as well as other standard fillings such as tomato and cheese.
Many viewers commented on the post, some of whom lauded her for her simple taste in sandwiches as they had been called “poor” for having jam sandwiches while others commented that she could have many more exotic fillings at her disposal and considered her choice to be boring.
Whatever her favorite sandwich might be, we remember the adorable sketch of Paddington Bear and the Queen. The sandwich sketch that was aired during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II, earlier this year. It made the Queen seem more accessible to the British public as she humorously responded to Britain’s icon, Paddington Bear, in a cute jubilee sketch.
Chef Darren McGrady has also commented on another British staple food, the ubiquitous Fish and Chips. Although a diehard Britisher would still insist that the best fish and chips available in the nation is deep fried, beer battered cod, with thick potato chips, wrapped in newspaper, the royal chef noted that the Queen had more refined tastes about how fish and chips should be prepared for the royal repast.
Chef Darren McGrady said that Queen Elizabeth likes the fish to be battered and baked and not fried. This is a healthier and more refined method of cooking another staple food of the nation but a Brit might still prefer the greasy, deep fried version of fish and chips.
