NHL News: Isles aim to extend winning streak at expense of floundering Flyers

The New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers joined most of the NHL in returning to action Friday.

But only the Islanders showed minimal effects of a Thanksgiving Day hangover.

New York will look to extend its winning streak to four games on Saturday night when it hosts the Flyers in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams will complete a back-to-back set against Metropolitan Division rivals.

The visiting Islanders squandered a two-goal lead before Brock Nelson scored early in the third period of a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday. The Flyers, in turn, absorbed their ninth straight defeat (0-6-3) with a 4-1 setback to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

New York headed into the holiday following a 49-save shutout by goaltender Ilya Sorokin in a 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

The Islanders didn’t miss a beat early on Friday as Oliver Wahlstrom scored late in the first period and Jean-Gabriel Pageau tallied in the second.

“I thought we were good in the first period,” coach Lane Lambert said. “We were moving our feet. We were on the forecheck. I give our guys full credit. They came to play.”

The Blue Jackets took advantage of a pair of Islanders penalties to score a pair of power-play goals 33 seconds apart.

“It was a little bit of adversity, but that’s not a bad thing,” Lambert said. “I thought our guys handled it well. At the end of the day, we came out and won the third period and won the hockey game.

“So, was it an ideal sequence? he added. “No. It’s disappointing that we were down 5-on-3 anyway.”

Nelson agreed with his coach’s assessment.

“Up 2-0 and playing a pretty good game and then a couple of minutes there where I don’t know if we necessarily agree with all the stuff that happened,” Nelson said. “You’re back in a tie hockey game. Good response by us to weather that.”

The Flyers, who most recently won on Nov. 8, have spent the past two-plus weeks weathering the type of streak that’s grown all too familiar.

Philadelphia, which has allowed 39 non-shootout goals during the skid, is mired in its fourth losing streak of at least six games since the start of the 2021-22 season — but only the third-longest in that span. The Flyers lost 10 straight (0-8-2) from Nov. 18, 2021, through Dec. 8, and 13 in a row (0-10-3) from Dec. 31 through Jan. 25.

“It’s easy to be negative and point fingers, but it hasn’t happened in this room,” Flyers right winger Kevin Hayes said. “We’re hoping to end the streak soon. I feel like I’ve been part of too many of those here, and hopefully it ends (Saturday).”

The Flyers were outshot 24-15 in the first two periods Friday and were blanked until Hayes scored just beyond the midway point of the third period.

“I thought we were flat,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “I was really happy with how we started the game. I thought we were flat. … I just don’t think we had much juice tonight.”

NHL News: Panthers look to ride potent power play past Blues

The Florida Panthers will aim to continue their recent success on the power play Saturday evening when they host the St. Louis Blues.

The Panthers are 11-for-30 on the man advantage over the past eight games for an impressive 36.7 success rate.

Five of those 11 goals have come from Sam Reinhart, who said his team’s flow on the power play has improved of late.

“It hasn’t been as structured,” Reinhart said of the power play. “We’re not so worried about finding our spots. (Instead), we’re attacking and reading off each other, and it’s been working.”

Reinhart led the Panthers last season with 16 power-play goals.

This season, Reinhart (five) and captain Aleksander Barkov (four) are Florida’s leaders in power-play goals. Matthew Tkachuk (seven), Barkov (five), Brandon Montour (five) and defenseman Aaron Ekblad (four) are Florida’s leaders in power-play assists.

Overall, Tkachuk leads the Panthers in assists (18) and points (27). He’s also on a five-game point streak with four goals and six assists.

Reinhart has four goals and one assist in his past five games.

“Those are two guys with incredible hands,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said of Tkachuk and Reinhart. “They can create chaos.”

Meanwhile, St. Louis has been a team of streaks this season.

The Blues started this season 3-0-0 before losing eight in a row. Then, the Blues won seven straight before losing two in a row, including Friday’s 5-2 defeat at the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Winger Pavel Buchnevich has been the Blues’ hottest player over the past nine games, producing five goals and eight assists.

Jordan Kyrou, who scored on Friday, leads the Blues with seven goals. Buchnevich, who had one goal and one assist on Friday, is tied with Brayden Schenn in goals with six.

“Our mindset going in there is that we can’t take our foot off the gas,” Schenn said when asked about the Panthers.

Blues winger Noel Acciari, who has five goals and four assists, is set to face the Panthers for the first time since leaving the franchise following last season.

Acciari spent three seasons with the Panthers, scoring a career-high 20 goals there in the 2019-2020 season.

“I’m excited to see him before and after the game,” Panthers winger Ryan Lomberg said of Acciari, who had consecutive hat tricks during that breakout season. “He’s a heck of a competitor. It’ll be good to battle against him.”

It will be interesting to see if St. Louis goes with goalie Jordan Binnington, who has started eight of the past nine games, including the loss at Tampa Bay on Friday.

Binnington is 9-7-0 with a 3.05 goals-against average this season, while backup Thomas Greiss 1-3-0 with a 3.76 GAA.

The Panthers have a goalie duo of Sergei Bobrovsky (4-5-1, 3.62 GAA) and Spencer Knight (6-3-1, 2.39).

Last season, the Blues and Panthers split two games. Host Florida won 4-3 in a shootout on Dec. 4 before St. Louis returned home three nights later and recorded a 4-3 victory on Buchnevich’s overtime goal.

NHL News: Leafs, Penguins set for another November meeting

The visiting Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins come streaking into their meeting Saturday night.

The Maple Leafs extended their point streak to seven games (5-0-2) Friday with a 4-3 win at Minnesota, and the Penguins won their fifth game in a row, 4-1 at Philadelphia.

The last time Toronto lost in regulation was Nov. 11, a 4-2 defeat by Pittsburgh.

In fact, this will be the teams’ third meeting of the month. The Maple Leafs won 5-2 on Nov. 15.

“We talked about it before we played (the Penguins) the first time, that we were going to see them three times in November, so here’s our third time,” Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. “Get on the plane, get to Pittsburgh and be ready to do it again.”

Since that 4-2 loss in the teams’ first November meeting, Toronto has found success, if not style points, Keefe said.

“It hasn’t been the prettiest wins, but guys are finding a way and competing, and that’s exactly what you’re asking of your group,” he said.

“When you’re going the way we are, (a key) is to try to set yourself up for success to win a game, and we’ve done that. And then the guys have just flat-out competed to make sure we get the points.”

In addition to the team’s streak, winger Mitch Marner has a 15-game point streak (20 points on four goals and 16 assists).

“We’re just playing the way we want to,” said Marner, who had a goal in Friday’s victory over Minnesota. “We’re getting guys to the net. We’re getting second opportunities.”

Pittsburgh is 7-1-1 since it endured a seven-game losing streak (0-6-1).

“We’re playing a more complete game, a more conscientious game,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’re getting contributions from up and down the lineup.”

The stars are buoying the Penguins, as might be expected. Sidney Crosby leads the team with 28 points in 21 games and has 12 points in his past six games; Evgeni Malkin has 20 points in 21 games and got the deciding goal in a shootout Wednesday against Calgary; and Jake Guentzel has 18 points in 17 games.

But Pittsburgh also has gotten some secondary scoring.

That was on full display Friday against the Flyers when — in addition to a Crosby goal — Ryan Poehling scored twice, Josh Archibald had a goal and an assist, and Teddy Blueger had three assists.

Those three make up the Penguins’ fourth line.

“That line’s playing really well for us,” Sullivan said. “They’ve really built an identity for themselves as far as how they’re playing to help us win games.

“First and foremost, they’re a real conscientious, stingy, defensive line. They’ve got a great defensive conscience. They compete hard on pucks. And when they can chip in offensively … it’s just that much more of a bonus.”

That line has only gotten to play together for six games, as Blueger was out because of an undisclosed injury for the first month of the season.

Also, since Blueger — one of Pittsburgh’s top penalty-killers — began playing, the team has killed all 14 opponent power plays.

“He’s a real good player,” Sullivan said. “He’s just a good two-way center iceman. I don’t think it’s a coincidence our penalty kill has been as strong as it has since he’s been back in the lineup.”

NHL News: Hurricanes aim to snap 5-game skid as Flames visit

Even when potential areas of concern turn out favorably, the Carolina Hurricanes are in one of those stretches when they can’t quite seem to notch the desired result.

They’ve had troubles producing on power plays and they have growing concerns about goaltending depth. There were encouraging developments on both those fronts this week.

The next step will be actually winning another game. Carolina, which has lost five consecutive games, meets the Calgary Flames on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

“We had our chances,” Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook said after Carolina’s 3-2 overtime loss at Boston on Friday. “It wasn’t like we weren’t getting anything. You give them those chances and it’s a law of averages. We have to know when to not take penalties and try to play at five-on-five.”

The defeat against the Bruins came after the Hurricanes squandered a two-goal lead. Carolina wound up losing in overtime for the fourth time on its five-game skid.

“We’re in one of those (stretches) where the bounces are certainly going the other way all the time so we’re going to have to just keep digging in,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said.

The Flames are wrapping up a six-game road trip with the only back-to-back set on the swing. But with an afternoon game at Washington on Friday, though the Flames took a 3-0 loss, Calgary coach Darryl Sutter hopes the team can take advantage of how the schedule breaks down.

“Play hard, that’s what we’re doing,” Sutter said. “Be honest, work hard and then go from there. It’s a long trip, for sure, but we’re not going to have a late night, so let’s use that.”

Calgary is 2-2-1 on the trip.

A good aspect for Carolina on Friday was ending a string of 21 power plays in a row without a goal. That went by the wayside when Stefan Noesen scored in the first period at Boston. By the end of the period, the Hurricanes had two goals, both with a man advantage.

“I don’t think our power play was that good,” Brind’Amour said. “I’ve seen it much better when we didn’t score.”

The Hurricanes have areas to address on the defensive end as well.

Brind’Amour prefers to avoid heavy regular-season workloads for his goalies, but now Pyotr Kochetkov has appeared in four straight games. It’s possible that goalie Antti Raanta could be ready for Saturday’s game, but he hasn’t been at full strength since he was nixed as the likely starter for the Wednesday game against the Arizona Coyotes.

The Flames might get going on offense with more good work from Jonathan Huberdeau. The veteran center, who topped 20 goals in each of the past five seasons, has just three goals and six assists in 17 games this season.

“I think Jonathan’s game has come a long way in the last five or six games, so trying to get him out there as much as you can,” Sutter said. “We’ve got to play a certain way to win — a real check, grind game. That’s the way it’s going to be. But then you need guys to score, so if they’re playing good enough, you try and get them a couple of shifts.”

Former Carolina forward Elias Lindholm is Calgary’s leader on offense with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists).

David Pastrnak’s one-timer on the power play at 3:19 of overtime propelled the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

NHL News: Kings defeat Sharks to end three-game losing streak

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves and Viktor Arvidsson and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Los Angeles Kings to a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.

Phillip Danault, Rasmus Kupari and Anze Kopitar also scored for Los Angeles, which snapped a season-high three-game losing streak. Sean Durzi added two assists.

Kevin Labanc and Alexander Barabanov scored goals for San Jose, which lost for the fourth time in five games. James Reimer finished with 24 saves for the Sharks, who are just 2-8-3 at home this season.

The Kings had an apparent goal by Adrian Kempe taken off the board after a coaches challenge showed the play was offside just 42 seconds into the contest, bounced they back to take a 1-0 lead at the 8:55 mark of the first period.

Anderson-Dolan picked up his first goal of the season when, using defenseman Mario Ferraro as a screen, he fired a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through Reimer’s pads.

San Jose tied it 1-1 when Labanc took a Timo Meier pass in the slot and fired a wrist shot inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season.

The Kings regained the lead near the end of the period on a power-play goal by Danault, who fired a one-timer from the left circle past Reimer’s glove side.

Arvidsson extended the lead to 3-1 early in the second period when he toe-dragged at the top of the right circle and then rifled a wrist shot under Reimer’s right arm for his fourth goal of the season.

The Sharks cut it to 3-2 with just 37 seconds left in the period when Durzi partially whiffed on a crossing pass in front of his own net. Barabanov intercepted in the low slot and then quickly fired a wrist shot through Quick’s pads for his third goal of the season.

Kupari made it 4-2 at the 2:51 mark of the third period when his routine wrist shot from the top of the left circle squirted through Reimer’s pads for his second goal of the season.

Kopitar then sealed the win for the Kings with an empty-netter with 2:28 remaining, his fourth goal of the season.

NHL News: Josh Morrissey’s OT goal pushes Jets past Stars

Josh Morrissey scored in overtime to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a wild 5-4 road win over the Dallas Stars on Friday.

The Jets surrendered three leads in the game, including a 4-2 lead with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Stars forward Jason Robertson scored 17:48 into the third period, then tallied a controversial equalizer with 20 seconds left on the clock.

A collision between Morrissey and Jamie Benn knocked goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s helmet off and, without a whistle stopping play, the puck got back to Robertson for the tying goal. After a video review, the goal was confirmed, as Morrissey’s initial shove led to Benn dislodging the helmet.

Morrissey was then the overtime hero, scoring 34 seconds into the extra frame. Morrissey leads all Jets skaters with 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) this season.

Adam Lowry had a goal and an assist for Winnipeg, while Blake Wheeler and Dylan DeMelo each had two assists. Jansen Harkins, Kyle Connor and Cole Perfetti scored the Jets’ other goals.

Hellebuyck stopped 37 of 41 shots, none bigger than a huge stick save on Tyler Seguin midway through the third period. With the Stars on a power play, Denis Gurianov fired a shot off the goalpost, and Hellebuyck denied Seguin’s rebound attempt.

Robertson had two goals and an assist for Dallas, and Benn collected a goal and an assist. Seguin and Miro Heiskanen each had two assists, and Wyatt Johnston scored the other Dallas goal.

Robertson has 27 points (16 goals, 11 assists) over a 14-game points streak. It is the fifth-longest points streak in franchise history, and the longest for any Stars player since the team moved from Minnesota to Dallas for the 1993-94 season.

Wheeler played in his 844th game with the Jets, setting a franchise record.

DeMelo had his first multi-point game of the season in his return to the lineup. The defenseman missed the Jets’ last four games due to an upper-body injury.

Stars goalie Jake Oettinger stopped 23 of 28 shots.

Colorado Avalanche forward Evan Rodrigues is out 2-4 weeks with a lower-body injury, coach Jared Bednar said Saturday.

He exited with an apparent leg injury in the first period of Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Rodrigues, 29, has recorded six goals and three assists through 18 games in his first season with Colorado.

He has 138 points (59 goals, 79 assists) in 334 games with the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Avalanche.

NHL News: Knights, in mini-slump, take on Canucks

Considering their performance in a 4-2 loss to Seattle on Friday, the timing for just their second back-to-back of the season probably couldn’t be better for the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Western Conference leaders in points (33) and wins (16) will get back at it on Saturday night in Las Vegas when they face the Vancouver Canucks for the second time in six days.

Vegas suffered its fourth loss in seven games and the third in its last five home games against Seattle. The Kraken jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes, but the Golden Knights rallied to tie the score later in the period on goals by Nicolas Roy and Phil Kessel.

Seattle then took control with goals by Andre Burakovsky and Jordan Eberle in the second period, and Philipp Grubauer, who made 20 saves, blanked Vegas over the final two periods to give the Kraken their first win in franchise history over the Golden Knights.

“Yeah, we play another divisional opponent tomorrow,” Vegas center Jack Eichel said. “Good chance for us to put this one behind us and find a way to get two points and win a game. Obviously wasn’t our best game tonight, but we get to play tomorrow. That’s the important part now.”

Knights coach Bruce Cassidy took the blame for his team’s slow start and lackluster performance.

“They were quicker than us; they won a lot more races,” Cassidy said. “One-on-one battles, they executed better than us. They were just the better team, I think. Let’s call it what is. From start to finish they outplayed us.

“We can look at different areas and why and what, but we weren’t ready to play, and that always falls on the coach. I’ve got to get the guys ready to play. We didn’t come out of the gate ready to play.”

Vegas didn’t have time to sit and dwell on the loss with a contest against Vancouver less than 24 hours later.

“We’re right back at it tomorrow,” Cassidy said. “That can be good or bad, right? You can correct, amend, whatever word you want to use. We’ll see how that works out. We didn’t bring the juice tonight.”

Vegas rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the middle of the third period to defeat the Canucks 5-4 in Vancouver on Monday on a Alex Pietrangelo goal with 5:46 remaining. William Carrier scored two goals and Mark Stone added a goal and an assist in the comeback.

The Canucks bounced back to defeat defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado 4-3 on Wednesday in Denver. Ethan Bear scored on a slap shot just inside the blue line with eight minutes to go to break a 3-3 tie and give Vancouver its third victory in its last four games.

“We never quit,” Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We took a lot of penalties against a great power play, and even when we got down, we never quit. We were pretty determined to do that, and that’s the great sign of a team. It’s a great sign of a lot of players that they never quit, and they want to keep going.”

NCAAF News: Top 25 football roundup: NC State nips No. 17 UNC in 2 OTs

Christopher Dunn kicked two field goals in overtime Friday and North Carolina State came out with a 30-27 double-overtime victory over No. 17 North Carolina on Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The game ended when the Tar Heels’ Noah Burnette missed 35-yard field-goal attempt wide left to end the second overtime.

North Carolina (9-3, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) — which still advances to the league’s championship game — forced overtime as time expired in regulation when Drake Maye found Antoine Green with a 4-yard touchdown pass and Burnette converted the extra-point kick. The Tar Heels gained their first lead of the game on Burnette’s 26-yard field goal in the first overtime.

Dunn then extended the game with a 32-yarder of his own. In the second OT, Dunn was true with his third field goal of the game (he missed on in the third quarter), and Burnette missed his second in four attempts on the day. The Wolfpack (8-4, 4-4) snapped a two-game skid and won an ACC road game for the first time this year.
