NHL News: Leon Draisaitl caps Oilers’ rally to stun Rangers

Leon Draisaitl scored a power-play goal with 2:02 remaining as the Edmonton Oilers stormed back from a three-goal deficit and beat the host New York Rangers 4-3 Saturday afternoon.

After Alexis Lafreniere was called for roughing Edmonton defenseman Tyson Barrie, Connor McDavid gained possession, circled the net and moved the puck to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Nugent-Hopkins spotted Draisaitl streaking down the left side and threaded the puck through the slot and the play ended when he sped past Chris Kreider and scored into the vacated left side of the net.

Before Draisaitl scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season, Edmonton scored three times in a span of 5:42 in the third after the Rangers took a 3-0 lead on goals by Kreider and Julien Gauthier 33 seconds apart late in the second.

Evan Bouchard scored the first two goals of Edmonton’s comeback before Dylan Holloway got his first career goal to tie it with 9:39 remaining.

Bouchard ended the shutout bid 4:39 into the third by ripping a shot from the left circle over Igor Shesterkin’s shoulder. Bouchard then ripped a slap shot from the middle of the slot to make it 3-2 with 12:28 left

Following an errant clearing pass by Jacob Trouba and a slow New York line change, Holloway ripped a shot from the right circle for a 3-3 deadlock with 9:39 to go.

Lafreniere scored early in the first period as the Rangers had goals by Artemi Panarin and Braden Schneider disallowed by replay reviews and heard loud boos when the game ended. Panarin’s goal was disallowed because of an offsides call and Schneider’s tally was disallowed due to goalie interference.

Jack Campbell stopped 20 shots as Edmonton improved to 4-8-0 in its past 12 contests.

Shesterkin made 28 saves as the Rangers lost for the fourth time in their past five home games (1-3-1)

Kreider made it 2-0 in the second period when he played the puck from behind the left side of the net and his backhander through the crease appeared to trickle off Campbell’s pads with 4:06 remaining. With 3:36 remaining, Gauthier was denied on an odd-man rush, but he corralled his own rebound, eluded Barrie and swept a wrister into the net.

The Rangers opened the scoring 2:20 in when Lafreniere crashed the net, positioned himself at the left doorstep and tipped in a pass from Adam Fox.

NHL News: Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov, Mats Zuccarello look to stay hot vs. Coyotes

The Minnesota Wild continue their six-game homestand Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Coyotes in St. Paul, Minn.

The Wild have split the first four games following a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.

Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello each scored and set up a goal and Alex Goligoski had two assists for Minnesota.

Zuccarello’s goal with 3:34 left in the third period pulled the Wild within 4-3 but they couldn’t get the equalizer.

“We had the looks,” Wild coach Dean Evason said. “Everything was executed correctly from whenever we pulled (goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury), four (minutes) and a bit, we definitely gave ourselves a chance at the end.”

Kaprizov extended his point streak to eight games (four goals, seven assists) and Zuccarello has eight points (two goals, six assists) in his last eight games.

Fleury made 24 saves in his return after missing three games with an upper-body injury. He would have liked another chance at Zach Aston-Reese’s goal that made it 2-1.

“I thought we played good,” Fleury said. “That second goal is on me. It’s definitely a stupid goal. I think I stepped out. But other than that, I thought we played good. The penalty kill was pretty good (3-for-3), and the battle back at the end.”

Forward Ryan Reaves, acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers on Wednesday, was minus-1 with four hits and one shot in 12:03 of ice time during his Minnesota debut.

Defenseman Jonas Brodin missed his second straight game with an illness.

Fleury is 15-9-1 with a 2.14 goals-against-average, .921 save percentage and three shutouts in his career against Arizona.

The Coyotes are coming off a 4-3 loss as well, although they managed to secure a point in a shootout loss at the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.

Jakob Chychrun tied the game 3-3 with 26 seconds left in the third period on a shot that deflected off a Red Wings defenseman. It was the first goal of the season for Chychrun, playing just his third game following offseason wrist surgery.

“I’ve had a lot of good looks in these first few games, and I’ve just tried to keep shooting,” Chychrun said. “If I keep putting the puck on net, I know eventually they will go in.”

Nick Schmaltz joined Chychrun by collecting a goal and an assist and J.J. Moser scored for Arizona, which is 4-3-2 on a 14-game road trip.

“A year ago, we probably would have celebrated getting a point on the road or four out of six, but right now we are very frustrated,” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “We want to win these games, not just get a point.”

Clayton Keller had an assist and has totaled 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) in 19 games.

Karel Vejmelka made 33 saves in the loss and has two shutouts in his past five games. He is 1-1 with a 4.84 GAA and .867 save percentage in two career games against the Wild.

Former Ambassador to Israel criticizes former President Trump for hosting Fuentes and celebrity Kanye at Mar-A-Lago

On Tuesday, celebrity rapper Kanye West and white supremacist Nick Fuentes visited former President Donald Trump at his residence at Mar-A-Lago. Celebrity Kanye posted his version of the visit on social media, on Thursday and Friday. Later Trump posted his version of the meeting with them on Truth Social, on Friday evening. However, his former ambassador to Israel criticized Trump for hosting these two polarizing humans at Mar-A-Lago.

David A Friedman, an orthodox Jew who was the former ambassador to Israel under the presidency of Donald Trump, publicly posted on social media, “To my friend Donald Trump, you are better than this.” He added that it was unacceptable to invite “an antisemite like Kanye West and human scum like Nick Fuentes” to his home in Mar-A-Lago.

The former ambassador to Israel continued his post by describing Ye, as he is now called and Fuentes as “bums” and urged Trump to send both of them “to the dustbin of history” as he said that it was where they belonged.

In another post, Friedman said that he had condemned former President Barack Obama for his association with “Louis Farrakhan and Jeremy White” and said that Trump’s association with Ye and Fuentes was “no different.” He added that “Antisemites deserve no quarter among American leaders, right or left.”

On Friday evening, Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Ye, formerly known as Kanye West” had been asking him for advice as he was facing business difficulties. He also said that they discussed politics to a “lesser extent” and that he had told Ye not to run in the 2024 presidential elections and added that “any voters you may have should vote for TRUMP.”

He also said that Ye and he “got along great.” He mentioned that the celebrity rapper had not expressed any “anti-Semitism.” Trump added that he had appreciated “all the nice things” the celebrity rapper said about Trump on Tucker Carlson.”

Trump concluded his post on Truth special by saying, “Why wouldn’t I agree to meet? Also, I don’t know Nick Fuentes.”

Trump had also said that Ye had called him to have dinner at Mar-A-Lago and he “unexpectedly” turned up with three friends of his. Trump said that he was not familiar with Ye’s friends. He added that the Tuesday dinner was quick and uneventful and that there were “many members present on the back patio.” He said that Ye and his friends left for the airport, after the dinner.

FIFA News: World Cup roundup: Defending champion France advances

Two second-half goals by Kylian Mbappe lifted France to a 2-1 win Saturday over Denmark and made the defending champion the first nation to advance to the World Cup round of 16 in Qatar.

Mbappe put France ahead in the Group D match in the 61st minute but Andreas Christensen’s header leveled for Denmark just seven minutes later.

Mbappe clinched the result in the 86th minute, converting a cross from Antoine Griezmann.

France leads Group D with six points, with Australia in second with three points and Denmark and Tunisia trailing with one point each.

–Poland 2, Saudi Arabia 0

Piotr Zielinski and Robert Lewandowski each scored a goal to lift Poland over Saudi Arabia in Group C action.

Zielinski scored in the 39th minute and Lewandowski doubled the advantage in the 82nd for Poland, which has four points in two matches. It will need just one point in its final match against Mexico to advance to the next round.

Lewandowski’s goal was his first in the World Cup in nine career matches.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a scintillating pair of stops from a penalty in the first half to keep Saudia Arabia in check. He finished with five saves.

Mohammed Al-Owais made one save for Saudia Arabia, which will battle Argentina in its final match.

–Australia 1, Tunisia 0

Mitchell Duke scored in the 23rd minute to fuel Australia, which recorded its first World Cup victory in 12 years.

Duke’s header slipped past goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen to give the Aussies all that they needed to win their Group D match.

The victory snapped a seven-match winless run at World Cup for Australia. Its last win came against Serbia in 2010.

Mathew Ryan made four saves for Australia, while Dahmen turned aside one shot for Tunisia.

CONCACAF News: Landon Donovan, DeMarcus Beasley headline Hall of Fame class

0

The National Soccer Hall of Fame announced Saturday that former United States Men’s National Team stars Landon Donovan and DeMarcus Beasley will be inducted in the Class of 2023.

Both Donovan and Beasley earned inclusion on their first year of eligibility and will be enshrined along with USWNT midfielder Lauren Cheney Holiday, whose induction was revealed Tuesday. The ceremony will take place on May 6, 2023 at the home of the Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas.

A member of last year’s class and former USMNT teammate Clint Dempsey surprised Donovan and Beasley with the news live on Fox Sports 1’s coverage of the World Cup in Qatar.

Donovan, 40, is tied with Dempsey as the all-time USMNT leader with 57 goals and ranks second to Cobi Jones in appearances (157), which included three World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010) and one Olympic Games (2000). The Ontario, Calif., native also won a record six MLS Cups as a member of the LA Galaxy (2005-14, ’16) and retired as the league’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The longtime forward and midfielder scored three goals at the 2010 World Cup, an American record at the event. He also played internationally with Bayern Munich, Everton and Leon.

Beasley, 40, played in 126 games for the USMNT over a 16-year span from 2001-17 and was the first U.S. male player to see action in four World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014). Originally from Fort Wayne, Ind., the former midfielder/defender also starred in MLS for 11 seasons with the Galaxy (1999), Chicago Fire (2000-04) and Houston Dynamo (2014-19).

Beasley also played two seasons in the Dutch first division, one season in the English Premier League, three seasons in the Scottish Premier League, one season in the German first division and three seasons in the Mexican first division. He won a Scottish Premier League championship with Rangers in 2009.

NHL News: Alex Ovechkin, Capitals look for another Garden State win vs. Devils

The Washington Capitals will aim to continue their dominance of the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night when they open a six-game, 12-day road trip in Newark, N.J.

The Capitals have emerged victorious in each of their past six trips to the Garden State, including a 6-3 win on Oct. 24. All told, Washington is 13-2-1 in its past 16 games in New Jersey and 26-3-3 in the past 32 overall vs. the Devils dating to the 2015-16 season.

Six different players scored in that October encounter for Washington, including superstar captain Alex Ovechkin.

Scoring a goal is nothing new for Ovechkin, of course. The three-time Hart Trophy recipient has done so 791 times in his decorated NHL career.

Ovechkin was at it again on Friday, joining T.J. Oshie in collecting a goal and an assist to lead the Capitals to a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Flames.

“When you win, you always have confidence. Sometimes you play well, but you can’t win the game, and that’s frustrating a little bit,” Ovechkin said. “But the situation right now, we just have to collect the points. It doesn’t matter how: lucky, bad bounce. We just have to collect the points and try to get as many as possible.”

Oshie has four points (one goal, three assists) in his past two games after missing the previous 11 with a lower-body injury.

“He’s one of our leaders on the ice and off the ice. He brings a lot of energy,” Ovechkin said of Oshie.

Washington has won two in a row for the first time since Oct. 22-24.

“We’re still very confident in the group we got here,” goaltender Darcy Kuemper said, per The Washington Post. “We’re definitely not happy with how the season started, but we’re confident that we’re going to turn it around. … The last two games have been a step in that direction.”

The Devils responded from seeing their franchise record-tying 13-game winning streak end Wednesday by posting a 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres two nights later.

“I thought we answered (the bell). We came out really well and got the lead,” New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. “We talked about not losing two games in a row and got a real good team effort.”

Jack Hughes, Jesper Boqvist and Tomas Tatar each scored a goal in the second period for the Devils. Yegor Sharangovich notched an assist to extend his points streak to five games (three goals, three assists).

Tatar also tallied in the previous meeting with Washington.

Vitek Vanecek likely will be in the crease to face his former team on Saturday. He relieved Mackenzie Blackwood and stopped three of four shots in the third period in the previous encounter with the Capitals.

With New Jersey’s next win, Ruff will become the fifth NHL coach with 800 victories. He has 571 with the Sabres (1997-2012), 165 with the Dallas Stars (2013-17) and 63 in two-plus seasons with the Devils.

NHL News: Rested Avalanche aim to subdue Stars

A break early Friday morning gave the Colorado Avalanche, well, a break.

The Avalanche were prepared to play the Predators in Nashville on Friday afternoon before a water main break at Bridgestone Arena forced the game to be postponed to a later date. The NHL also postponed the Predators’ game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

So instead of hosting the Dallas Stars in Denver on Saturday in the second game of a back-to-back set, the Avalanche flew home and had a day off while Dallas rallied to force overtime before dropping a 5-4 decision to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night. The Stars are on a seven-game point streak (4-0-3) despite the loss.

The unexpected day off gave Colorado a chance to heal a little. Mikko Rantanen took a stick to the face during a 4-3 loss to Vancouver on Wednesday night, and Evan Rodrigues left the game with a lower-body injury and didn’t play after the first intermission.

Coach Jared Bednar said Thursday that Rodrigues was day-to-day but there were indications he might not miss much time. The team assigned Anton Blidh and Sampo Ranta to the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League.

The downside of getting an extra day off is the Avalanche had more time to think about squandering a game to Vancouver. Colorado gave up two goals in the third period to lose in regulation and end a brief three-game winning streak.

“I didn’t love our game (Wednesday) night. I didn’t think we checked hard enough in the first period. It’s a dangerous team,” Bednar said after the loss. “There (are) some things obviously that I didn’t love. It wasn’t terrible at all times, but it wasn’t to our standard.”

The Avalanche have dropped their past two home games but have won three in a row on the road, including winning a shootout in Dallas on Monday night.

The Stars had to put in extra time to earn a point against Winnipeg on Friday, a point gained thanks to a red-hot Jason Robertson. The forward, who is riding a 14-game points streak (16 goals, 11 assists), scored two goals in a span of 1:52 late in the third period to force overtime.

Robertson, whose 18 goals lead the NHL, broke a tie with Dave Gagner for the team’s longest points streak in history since the franchise moved to Dallas in 1993-94.

He has 34 points on the season, one behind Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid for the league lead.

“You know as well as I do, it doesn’t really mean much to me,” Robertson said. “I’m playing hockey. I pride myself on doing everything both ways. Unfortunately, I was on the wrong side of guys tonight.”

The comeback has become standard for the Stars. They erased a three-goal deficit against Chicago to win 6-4 on Wednesday night.

“We don’t want to be putting ourselves in these situations, but I liked the fight, liked the compete right until the end there,” Stars captain Jamie Benn said. “Hopefully, that turns out to be a big point.”

Dallas wrapped up a 2-0-2 homestand and now heads on the road for two games to try to stay atop the Central Division.

NHL News: Isles aim to extend winning streak at expense of floundering Flyers

The New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers joined most of the NHL in returning to action Friday.

But only the Islanders showed minimal effects of a Thanksgiving Day hangover.

New York will look to extend its winning streak to four games on Saturday night when it hosts the Flyers in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams will complete a back-to-back set against Metropolitan Division rivals.

The visiting Islanders squandered a two-goal lead before Brock Nelson scored early in the third period of a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday. The Flyers, in turn, absorbed their ninth straight defeat (0-6-3) with a 4-1 setback to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

New York headed into the holiday following a 49-save shutout by goaltender Ilya Sorokin in a 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

The Islanders didn’t miss a beat early on Friday as Oliver Wahlstrom scored late in the first period and Jean-Gabriel Pageau tallied in the second.

“I thought we were good in the first period,” coach Lane Lambert said. “We were moving our feet. We were on the forecheck. I give our guys full credit. They came to play.”

The Blue Jackets took advantage of a pair of Islanders penalties to score a pair of power-play goals 33 seconds apart.

“It was a little bit of adversity, but that’s not a bad thing,” Lambert said. “I thought our guys handled it well. At the end of the day, we came out and won the third period and won the hockey game.

“So, was it an ideal sequence? he added. “No. It’s disappointing that we were down 5-on-3 anyway.”

Nelson agreed with his coach’s assessment.

“Up 2-0 and playing a pretty good game and then a couple of minutes there where I don’t know if we necessarily agree with all the stuff that happened,” Nelson said. “You’re back in a tie hockey game. Good response by us to weather that.”

The Flyers, who most recently won on Nov. 8, have spent the past two-plus weeks weathering the type of streak that’s grown all too familiar.

Philadelphia, which has allowed 39 non-shootout goals during the skid, is mired in its fourth losing streak of at least six games since the start of the 2021-22 season — but only the third-longest in that span. The Flyers lost 10 straight (0-8-2) from Nov. 18, 2021, through Dec. 8, and 13 in a row (0-10-3) from Dec. 31 through Jan. 25.

“It’s easy to be negative and point fingers, but it hasn’t happened in this room,” Flyers right winger Kevin Hayes said. “We’re hoping to end the streak soon. I feel like I’ve been part of too many of those here, and hopefully it ends (Saturday).”

The Flyers were outshot 24-15 in the first two periods Friday and were blanked until Hayes scored just beyond the midway point of the third period.

“I thought we were flat,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “I was really happy with how we started the game. I thought we were flat. … I just don’t think we had much juice tonight.”
