Missouri off to 6-0 start with rout of Houston Christian

DeAndre Gholston scored 22 points and Kobe Brown added 19 as Missouri routed Houston Christian 105-69 Saturday in Columbia, Mo.

Noah Carter scored 14 points and D’Moi Hodge added 13 for the Tigers (7-0), who played all 15 players on their roster and got points from 12 of them. They led for all but 30 seconds of the game.

Maks Klanjscek led the Huskies (1-6) with 17 points. Andrew King scored 13 and Tristan Moore added 11.

The Tigers hit 11 of 25 shots from 3-point range and earned 28 assists on their 43 made baskets. They scored 26 points off the fast break and 62 points in the paint.

Missouri got 14 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points.

The Huskies opened in a 2-3 zone defense hoping to slow the Tigers down. But Missouri raced to a 16-0 lead with Hodge hitting two 3-point jumpers and Brown and Gholston hitting one each.

That forced Houston Christian to switch to a man-to-man defense, which didn’t work either.

The Tigers forced five early turnovers to feed their transition game and pushed their margin to 25-3 less than 7 minutes into the game.

Houston Christian responded with a 17-9 surge fueled by two 3-point jumpers by Moore to cut Missouri’s lead to 34-20.

But Missouri continued playing with tempo with four- and five-guard lineups. Gholston knocked down consecutive 3-point jumpers as the Tigers pulled away to a 54-30 halftime lead.

The Tigers used all 12 of their scholarship players in the first half. They forced 12 turnovers and scored 15 points off them.

Brown scored twice in the lane to fuel Missouri’s 8-0 run early in the second half. That pushed the Tigers’ lead to 64-34 and ended whatever suspense that remained in the game.

NCAAF News: Duke rallies to beat Wake Forest, notch eight-win season

Riley Leonard’s second touchdown pass of the game to Sahmir Hagans came with 2:04 to play and lifted Duke past visiting Wake Forest 34-31 on Saturday at Durham, N.C.

Leonard threw for four touchdowns to complete a splendid regular season under first-year coach Mike Elko. The Blue Devils (8-4, 5-3) were winless in ACC play last season. The winning points came on a 20-yard pass play.

Sam Hartman threw three touchdown passes to tie an Atlantic Coast Conference record for Wake Forest, but he was picked off on his final pass. Hartman completed 26 of 42 throws for 347 yards. Justice Ellison scored on a run for Wake Forest (7-5, 3-5).

Leonard was 29-for-41 for 391 yards. Duke had a 14-play drive go for naught in the fourth quarter when Leonard’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Jermal Martin Jr. with 5:05 remaining. The Blue Devils had one more chance and made it count, needing two plays to cover 65 yards.

Duke snapped a three-game skid in the series with Wake Forest. Elko is a former defensive coordinator for the Demon Deacons.

Leonard’s 30-yard pass play to Jordan Moore helped Duke to a 27-17 lead.

Hartman struck back, first throwing 17 yards to Taylor Morin before his 6-yard delivery to A.T. Perry with 12:31 remaining put the Demon Deacons in the lead for the first time since the opening minute of the second quarter.

That also marked Hartman’s 107th career touchdown pass, tying him with former Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd for the all-time ACC record.

Duke’s Todd Pelino had field goals from 42 and 32 in the first half, which ended with the Blue Devils up 20-17.

Leonard hit Hagans for 30 yards and Jaylen Calhoun for 46 in a 5 ½-minute stretch early in the second quarter as Duke went up 17-7.

Hartman’s 8-yard hookup with Donavon Greene closed the gap and Matthew Dennis’ 32-yard field goal with 1:50 to go in the half tied the score.

Calhoun caught 10 passes for 144 yards.

Second-half surge carries Georgetown past UMBC

Jay Heath scored 25 points and Primo Spears added 20 as Georgetown overwhelmed UMBC with defense at the start of the second half in a 79-70 victory on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

Heath made 5 of 6 shots from beyond the arc and Spears connected on 3 of 4 tries from long distance as the Hoyas (4-3) made 50 percent (11 of 22) of their 3-point attempts. Spears added six assists and six rebounds.

Qudus Wahab added 10 points and eight rebounds for Georgetown.

The Hoyas trailed by as many as eight points before the break but took control with a 16-0 run to open the second half.

Using their superior length and quickness in an aggressive man-to-man scheme, the Hoyas forced 13 consecutive misses by the Retrievers to begin the half and grab a 58-42 lead.

UMBC (3-4) was paced by Matteo Picarelli who came off the bench to hit five 3-pointers on his way to 19 points. Colton Lawrence scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half to go along with his eight rebounds.

In the closing minutes, the Retrievers went on a late 14-2 run fueled by a trio of 3-pointers from Picarelli to make it interesting. UMBC sliced the deficit to 73-68, but in the final 27 seconds, Wayne Bristol had a breakaway slam and made two free throws to sew it up.

UMBC opened with the game’s first seven points and held the lead for most of the first half.

When Bryson Mozone made a 3-pointer with 5:03 left in the half, the Hoyas had their first lead of the game, 35-34.

After making five of their first eight 3-point attempts, the Retrievers missed their next eight attempts in the half but still earned a 42-42 tie at the break.

Georgetown held UMBC scoreless for the first 7:20 of the second half and without a field goal for the first 8:21 of the period. The Retrievers made just 24.2 percent of their shots in the second half and finished at 33.8 percent for the game.

Spears and Wahab supplied six points each during the 16-0 run to open the half.

NCAAF News: Purdue topples Indiana, earns Big Ten title game spot

Purdue clinched its first Big Ten West Division in school history by rallying for a 30-16 victory over host Indiana on Saturday at Bloomington, Ind.

Aidan O’Connell went 18-of-29 passing for 290 yards with two touchdowns for the Boilermakers, who took home the “Old Oaken Bucket” for the fourth time in the past five years.

Purdue (8-4, 6-3) advanced to the Big Ten title game on Dec. 3 at Indianapolis, where it will face No. 3 and defending conference champion Michigan (12-0, 9-0). The Wolverines clinched the East Division title with a 45-23 win over No. 2 Ohio State at Columbus, Ohio.

Purdue’s Devin Mockobee rushed for 99 yards and a score on 15 carries and caught five passes for 58 yards. Charlie Jones had four receptions, including a 60-yard touchdown catch, for 143 yards.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Purdue took a 10-7 lead it wouldn’t relinquish on O’Connell’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Payne Durham with 10:35 left in the third quarter.

After forcing Indiana to punt after just three plays, Purdue extended its lead to 17-7 on Mockobee’s 27-yard touchdown run with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Indiana (4-8, 2-7) pulled to within 17-10 on Charles Campbell’s 28-yard field goal with 11:06 left in the game.

But Purdue put the game away three plays later, when O’Connell threw a 60-yard scoring strike to Jones for a 24-10 lead with 9:38 left.

Cornerback Cory Trice’s 6-yard interception return made it 30-10 after a missed extra-point with 2:17 left.

After Purdue took a 3-0 lead on Mitchell Fineran’s 29-yard field goal with 11:49 left in the first quarter, the Hoosiers found the end zone just 47 seconds later on Jaylin Lucas’ 71-yard run that ended the first-half scoring.

Indiana had a major loss on its next series, when quarterback Dexter Williams II was carted off the field and transported to a hospital after sustaining what appeared to be a severe injury to his right leg.

Williams came away with the injury when he planted his foot to throw a pass during the first quarter. He wasn’t hit on the play.

Wiliams was replaced by Connor Bazelak, who finished 24-of-42 passing for 201 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Lucas ran for 100 yards on nine carries. Josh Henderson had five catches for 35 yards and a touchdown for the Hoosiers.

Suns lean on Deandre Ayton to squeak by Jazz

Deandre Ayton scored 29 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to carry the Phoenix Suns to a 113-112 home victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

Ayton had a big steal in the final minute, made 11 of 19 field goals, dished out three assists and blocked two shots in leading the Suns to their second win in as many nights.

Devin Booker added 27 points as the Suns won their fourth consecutive game after surviving a wild last minute.

Jordan Clarkson scored 22 points and Collin Sexton had 20, but the Jazz couldn’t maintain an early 10-point lead en route to their season-high fourth straight loss.

The setback ended a difficult stretch of schedule for the Jazz, who played six games in nine nights, including two games against Phoenix. The Jazz won that previous matchup on Nov. 18, 134-133, in Salt Lake City.

Phoenix didn’t score for the final 2:03 of the game, but Utah was only able to muster two points from the free-throw line by Clarkson with 26 seconds remaining. Booker missed a 3 with 2.1 seconds remaining, but Ayton snagged the offensive rebound to seal the victory.

The Suns have now beaten the Jazz in eight of their last 10 meetings. Utah, which began the season 10-3, lost for the seventh time in nine outings.

The Jazz scored the first five points and held the lead throughout the first quarter, taking a 10-point edge into the second quarter.

The Suns used a 9-0 run, capped by an Ish Wainright 3-pointer, to knot things back up at 40-40. Sexton pushed Utah back ahead with six straight points, and the Jazz went into the locker room at halftime up 54-51 thanks to a last-second floater by Clarkson.

Utah maintained that three-point lead through the third quarter despite Booker going off for 14 points in the period.

Damion Lee began a 7-0 run for the Suns with a triple followed by buckets from Mikal Bridges and Ayton.

Utah responded with five straight points, but the Suns kept answering the Jazz and used a three-point play by Ayton to go ahead by four again with 3:52 left to play.

Both teams were on the second night of a back-to-back set. Phoenix defeated Detroit at home, while the Jazz were blown out at Golden State on Friday.

NCAAF News: Late TD carries Minnesota to victory over Wisconsin

Redshirt freshman Athan Kaliakmanis hit Le’Meke Brockington with a 45-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter as visiting Minnesota rallied for a 23-16 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday, retaining Paul Bunyan’s Axe in college football’s longest rivalry.

The Badgers had a final drive from their own 30 after Matthew Trickett hit the right upright on a 48-yard field goal attempt with 1:48 left. Chase Wolf replaced injured quarterback Graham Mertz midway through the drive. A pass interference call in the end zone gave Wisconsin a first-and-goal at the five, but the Badgers committed four penalties, moving them back to the 30.

Wolf’s pass on fourth-and-goal from the 25 with 5 seconds left was incomplete in the end zone.

Minnesota (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) defeated Wisconsin two years in a row for the first time since 1994. The series is tied, 62-62-8.

The Badgers (6-6, 4-5 Big Ten) dropped to 4-3 under interim coach Jim Leonhard, promoted from defensive coordinator when Paul Chryst was fired the day after a 34-10 loss at home to Illinois.

Chimere Dike scored on a 9-yard reverse to put Wisconsin in front 16-13 late in the third quarter. Minnesota tied it 16-16 on Trickett’s 27-yard field with 7:58 remaining.

The Gophers forced a three-and-out to set up the winning 71-yard drive. Kaliakmanis, making his third consecutive start in place of injured Tanner Morgan, hit Brockington across the middle at the 33 and he outran the secondary.

Justin Walley picked off Mertz on Wisconsin’s next possession, but Trickett’s miss gave the Badgers one last shot.

Kaliakmanis completed 19 of 29 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns. Mohamed Ibrahim, first in the nation with 152.4 yards per game, finished with 70 yards on 27 carries, ending his streak of 100-yard rushing games at 19.

Trickett connected on a 50-yard field goal that grazed the crossbar on the Gophers’ opening possession of the third quarter to make it 13-6. Nate Van Zelst responded with his third field goal, a 36-yarder, to cut the lead to 13-9.

Trickett’s 25-yard field goal on the final play of the first half put Minnesota up 10-6.

The Gophers answered an opening field goal with a 10-play, 81-yard drive capped by Kaliakmanis’ 6-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Jackson.

Wisconsin was without leading rusher Braelon Allen, out with a right leg injury. Chez Mellusi rushed 19 times for 75 yards. Mertz completed 16 of 27 passes for 170 yards.

LeBron James scores 39 as Lakers best Spurs

LeBron James scored a season-high 39 points — 16 of them in a decisive stretch — as the visiting Los Angeles Lakers defeated the San Antonio Spurs 143-138 on Saturday in the second game of a back-to-back between the teams.

James added 11 rebounds.

The Lakers played without Anthony Davis, who has a left calf contusion, and Patrick Beverley, sitting out the second of a three-game suspension. But James and Dennis Schroder were plenty tough to handle as Los Angeles won for the fifth time in its past six games.

On the other hand, the Spurs are in a downward spiral, losing their eighth straight contest (three of them against the Lakers). The Spurs lost for the 13th time in their 14 November games.

Los Angeles rallied to take a two-point lead at halftime and led just 91-90 after Tre Jones’ driving layup with 3:24 to play in the third quarter. That’s when James and company took charge, reeling off an 8-0 run to go back up by nine points.

James then scored 12 of the Lakers’ 15 points over the first 2 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter. San Antonio never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Schroder added 21 points for Los Angeles, with Lonnie Walker IV hitting for 19 and Austin Reeves scoring 16.

Seven players scored in double figures for San Antonio, led by Keldon Johnson’s 26 points, 23 from Jones and 20 from Devin Vassell. Johnson also took 10 rebounds and Jones dished out 13 assists.

The first quarter had eight lead changes and four ties before ending with the Spurs up 34-33.

San Antonio led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter before the Lakers rallied, using a 15-3 run through the middle of the period jump back in front at 55-54 after Schroder’s step-back jumper at the 4:10 mark. Two buckets by Jones over the final 37.4 seconds of the quarter brought the Spurs back to within 70-68 at the break.

James and Schroder led the Lakers with 16 points apiece before halftime. Vassell had 14 to pace San Antonio, with Poeltl adding 12 and Jones scoring 10.

NCAAF News: Sydney Brown notches two defensive TDs as Illinois whips Northwestern

Safety Sydney Brown became the first FBS player this season to return an interception and a fumble for touchdowns in the same game to highlight Illinois’ 41-3 Big Ten victory over Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois.

Brown, the twin brother of national rushing leader Chase Brown, scored on a 53-yard fumble return and a 39-yard interception in the third quarter as Illinois (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) forced six turnovers to retain the Land of Lincoln Trophy.

The Illini did their part to earn their first spot in the Big Ten championship game, but Purdue (8-4, 6-3) rallied to win at Indiana to claim the West Division title. Nonetheless, Illinois finished with its best regular-season record since Ron Zook’s 2007 team earned a Rose Bowl berth with a 9-3 mark.

Northwestern (1-11, 1-8) dropped its 11th game in a row as sophomore walk-on quarterback Cole Freeman, making his second start, completed 12 of 22 passes for 93 yards and four interceptions before being replaced late in the third quarter by freshman Jack Lausch.

Chase Brown, who entered the game as the nation’s rushing leader with 1,582 yards, limped off midway through the first quarter with a leg injury. He returned periodically and finished with a season-low 61 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries.

After Brown’s injury, Reggie Love III (11 rushes, 85 yards) took over and rushed for 43 of the 57 yards remaining on the drive — capping the march with a 2-yard blast off the right side for a 7-0 Illinois lead with 5:22 left in the first.

Northwestern drove into Illinois territory on all three of its second-quarter possessions, but all three ended in interceptions. All-America cornerback candidate Devon Witherspoon picked off two while Sydney Brown earned his first of two interceptions.

Illinois built a 17-0 lead by halftime on Caleb Griffin’s 23-yard field goal and quarterback Tommy DeVito’s 1-yard sneak.

The offensive pattern changed for Northwestern in the second half, but only slightly. The Wildcats rushed to Illinois’ 37-yard line on their second drive of the third quarter, but then Freeman and running back Andrew Clair lost the ball at the mesh point. Sydney Brown picked up the fumble and cruised 53 yards for a score and a 27-0 lead with 7:23 left in the third.

Brown returned to the end zone just three-plus minutes later as he picked off a Freeman pass and zipped 39 yards down the left sideline to give Illinois a 34-0 lead with 4:06 to go in the third.

Illinois’ bid for its first Big Ten shutout since Oct. 14, 2000 ended when Alex Stage booted a 28-yard field goal with 12:17 to play.

Rockets sweep home back-to-back by beating Thunder

Jalen Green scored a team-high 28 points, Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. recorded double-doubles and the Houston Rockets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-105 on Saturday to sweep both games of a home back-to-back.

After rallying from a 16-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, the Rockets seized control with an 18-2 second-quarter run in cruising past the Thunder. Houston led by as many as 27 points.

Oklahoma City was coming off an overtime win against the visiting Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Green shot 11 of 19 while adding a team-best nine assists. His dynamic play started early and continued throughout, particularly in the second period, when Houston shot 16 of 20 overall.

Sengun produced 21 points, 19 rebounds and seven assists, while Smith paired 15 points with 13 rebounds. Kevin Porter Jr. added 16 points and Eric Gordon 15 for the Rockets. Garrison Mathews chipped in 11 off the bench.

The Rockets shot a robust 18 of 36 from behind the arc, with Green leading the way at 6 of 9.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander poured in a game-high 32 points, his 14th 30-point game this season. But the Thunder didn’t produce enough offensively to supplement Gilgeous-Alexander, shooting 39.2 percent overall while missing 34 of 44 3-pointers. Josh Giddey scored 18 points for the Thunder.

After Oklahoma City responded to the Rockets’ 14-4 start with a 9-0 spurt, Houston needed a 3-pointer from Gordon just prior to the first-quarter buzzer to take a 23-22 lead into the second.

Then the Rockets ran away and hid that period, starting with two Mathews 3s and another from Smith in transition that helped extend their lead to 49-29 midway through the quarter.

Six Rockets players scored during the aforementioned 18-2 blitz, with Mathews, Smith and Porter all drilling 3-pointers. The Rockets led 65-44 at the intermission on the strength of their perimeter shooting, going 11 of 19 from deep.

Houston shot 64.1 percent in the first half, boosted by a 42-point second period that featured 7-of-11 3-point shooting.

Gilgeous-Alexander had 18 points at the break, but his teammates hit only 11 of 34 field goals.

NCAAF News: No. 21 Oregon State rallies from 21-point hole to edge No. 9 Oregon

Isaiah Newell scored on two fourth-quarter touchdown runs — his only carries of the game — as host No. 21 Oregon State rallied from a 21-point, second-half deficit to defeat No. 9 Oregon 38-34 Saturday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore., preventing the rival Ducks from clinching a berth in the Pac-12 Conference championship game.

Damien Martinez had his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, gaining 103 yards before leaving with an apparent leg injury for the Beavers (9-3, 6-3 Pac-12), who clinched their first nine-win regular season since 2012.

A hobbled Bo Nix completed 27 of 41 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon (9-3, 7-2).

The Ducks were 0-for-5 on fourth-down attempts, with three of those coming in the fourth quarter.

Leading 34-31 with 9:39 remaining, the Ducks went for it on fourth-and-1 from their own 29-yard line. Nix was stopped for a 1-yard loss on a keeper.

Oregon State took advantage, with Newell scoring on a 6-yard run with 8:11 left to give the Beavers their first lead of the second half.

The Ducks marched to Oregon State’s 3-yard line with three minutes left, but Nix’s fourth-down pass for Troy Franklin fell incomplete and the Beavers ran out the clock.

Ben Gulbranson, who started his seventh straight game at quarterback with Chance Nolan sidelined by a neck injury, completed just 6 of 13 passes for 60 yards with two interceptions.

But Gulbranson scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, the latter with 12:31 remaining, to pull the Beavers within 34-31.

Nix threw a 9-yard scoring strike to Franklin with 14 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Ducks a 14-10 lead following a back-and-forth half, sparking a run of 24 unanswered points.

The Ducks seemed to pull away in the third quarter on short touchdown runs by Jordan James and Noah Whittington.

Camden Lewis added a 42-yard field goal to give the Ducks a 31-10 lead with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

The Beavers rallied — entirely on the ground.

Oregon State got a 4-yard TD run from Deshaun Fenwick to stop the Ducks’ run before Lewis kicked a 24-yarder to make it 34-17 with 14:57 to go.

Newell scored on a 15-yard run and the Beavers got the ball back on Oregon’s 2-yard line after Ducks punter Alex Bales bobbled a snap. That set up Gulbranson’s second TD.
