NHL News: Kings place F Brendan Lemieux (lower body) on IR

The Los Angeles Kings placed forward Brendan Lemieux on injured reserve Sunday with a lower-body injury.

Lemieux did not return after delivering a second-period hit to Detroit forward Adam Erne in Saturday’s 4-3 victory against the Red Wings.

“I think he’s probably going to be out for a little while,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said after the game.

Lemieux, 26, has no goals and three assists in 15 games this season. He leads Los Angeles in penalty minutes (28) and ranks second on the team in hits (42).

The Kings also assigned defenseman Brandt Clarke to the Ontario Reign on a conditioning loan and recalled forward Lias Andersson and defenseman Jacob Moverare from the American Hockey League club.

Why Should You Buy Groupon After 2022 Earnings Report

0

Groupon has some recession-resistant characteristics that the market appears to be overlooking. Let’s look at why they could recover from the recent sell-off.

Wall Street likes Groupon Inc Common Stock (GRPN). Analysts on average rate the stock a Buy. The average price target is $49, implying that analysts expect the stock to rise 48.54% in the next year.

Groupon the king of daily deals has consumers looking for deals and deep discounts on merchandise and services which Groupon has to offer. Groupon has been able to maintain its entire active customer base in North America at about 15 million, largely due to local consumer growth. The number of completed transactions in North America increased by 1% annually and by 8% over the previous quarter, showing that local customers are making purchases more frequently.

The new plan, according to the Chicago-based e-commerce site (Nasdaq: GRPN), aims to “reduce our cost structure and fundamentally improve our marketplace experience to sustain long-term development.” CEO Kedar Deshpande said in a statement. “Our overall business performance is not at the levels we anticipated, and we are taking decisive actions to improve our trajectory.”

Groupon is reducing its North America sales teams to focus on “self-service merchant acquisition capabilities.” It is also re-organizing the company to focus “only on mission-critical activities and leaning on more external support.” “In addition, we are proposing to reduce cloud infrastructure and support functions as we wrap up cloud migrations.” Groupon is also closing its Australia Goods business, more than a decade after launching there in the first place. Groupon said that it will “rationalize” its real estate footprint to be more in line with hybrid work.

Local businesses benefit from Groupon’s discount vouchers and coupons. Customers visit Groupon to get their coupons. Customers benefit from discounts, and businesses benefit from increased customer traffic. Groupon earns money by charging merchants fees when their customers use their coupons.

In this sense, Groupon generates revenue by acting as a middleman, which is one of the oldest business models. The company generates revenue from both products and services in three categories: local, goods, and travel. Using a Groupon voucher, customers can get more than 50% off goods and services.

Groupon offers deep discounts on a wide range of products, including fashion and beauty items, vacation packages, spa services, and gift certificates to bars and restaurants. Though consumers can easily purchase the same products directly from the businesses that sell them, Groupon frequently offers prices that are significantly lower than retail. In essence, Groupon acts as a powerful advertising engine, generating sales and increasing brand recognition in exchange for a fee.

Though businesses receive less than they would normally charge for goods and services, Groupon serves as an advertiser with enormous reach, and merchants benefit by not having to pay for the advertisement upfront. Rather, they pay a percentage of revenue generated by the Groupon deal after the fact.

Damien Schmitz, Interim CFO of Groupon said, “We have made significant progress streamlining our tech platform and leaning into automation throughout our organization and, as a result, we believe we can take $150 million in annual costs out of our business by the end of 2023.”  “We’ll also be looking at other ways to reduce our costs and believe we can identify an additional $50 million in savings by the end of 2023. With a cost structure that is better aligned with the size of our current business and a disciplined operating philosophy, we believe we can generate meaningful and sustainable cash flow and create value for all of our stakeholders.”

Groupon’s stake in mobile payments company SumUp, could be a massive windfall   for the company perhaps exceeding Groupon’s current market value.

This is the reason why Prescience Point Capital Management predicts that Groupon share value should be in the  $70-$100 range, after Groupon confirmed its stake in SumUpon, on a bullish trend. This is an estimation and not financial advice.

Nevada keeps Cortez Masto giving Democrats control of Senate

Cortez Masto Facebook

The Associated Press has finally called the race for Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, on Saturday. This Democratic win in Nevada tallies the Senate seats won by the party to 50. With the additional seat of Vice President Kamal Harris, the Democrats have retained their majority in the Senate. Although Cortez Masto was trailing Republican contender Adam Laxalt, many had predicted that she would retain the seat. She pulled ahead after the mail-in ballots from the Las Vegas area in Clark County were counted, on Saturday night.

Both the candidates in the Nevada race had strong name recognition. The winner Catherine Cortez Masto is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants. She is also the daughter of a former influential commissioner in Clark County. She was elected to fill in Harry Reid’s seat after he retired. She had a small two-point margin lead.

Cortez Masto, who is the first Latina elected to the Senate, used her roots to win as 20 percent of the electorate has similar roots. She used ads to highlight Laxalt’s views of banning abortions at 13 weeks. She highlighted the fact that 14 members of his family who endorsed her. She also called him a 2020 election denier.

Adam Laxalt served as the Attorney General of Nevada. He lost the gubernatorial election in the state in 2018, by four points. He helped Trump in his campaign but Trump lost Nevada by two points. Laxalt denied the results of the 2020 election of President Joe Biden.

Adam Laxalt was endorsed by Donald Trump. He linked Cortez Masto to two issues that were of concern among voters: crime and inflation. Ironically violent crime in Nevada fell for the third consecutive year. His campaign was bankrolled by two of the richest members in the nation: Jeff Yass, an investor from Pennsylvania and Richard Uihlein, founder of Uline packaging products.

The Nevada race, although close, clinched the deal for the Democrats in the Senate and gave them the majority. There will be a runoff in December for the seat in Georgia where Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock will face former scandal ridden football legend Herschel Walker, who is endorsed by Donald Trump.

Is Ron DeSantis edging past Donald Trump? New poll gives Florida Governor 7-point lead

On Friday, popular national poll YouGov gave Florida Governor Ron DeSantis a 7-point lead over former President Donald Trump in a potential battle for Republican presidential candidate, in 2024. This is the first poll to gauge the popularity of a possible GOP presidential candidate in 2024, after the 2022 midterms. It is also the first poll since February 2016 that indicates a weakening dominance of Trump as leader of the Republican party.

The Friday poll indicated that 42 percent of Republicans as well as Independents who leaned towards the GOP preferred the Floridian Governor while 35 percent of those who were polled remained strong with the former president.

The poll was conducted between November 9 and November 11. This was after the midterm elections on Tuesday and 1500 Americans were polled. It included 413 self-identified Republicans as well as those who leaned towards the GOP. The margin of error of the sample was said to be 3 percent.

In October, before the midterms, there was a reversal in poll percentages in a survey conducted by the same YouGov poll. Last month’s poll results showed 45 percent of the GOP supported a third bid by Donald Trump while 35 percent polled for Ron DeSantis.

The midterm result was extremely favorable to the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who gained a 19-point lead over his rival in the gubernatorial elections. On the other hand, many hopeful candidates who stood for Congress as Republicans endorsed by Trump lost the elections or are trailing where results have not as yet been declared. Some high profile candidates endorsed by him have also lost the elections.

Just before the midterms, Donald Trump said that he had an important announcement to make but deferred it, to be made after the midterms. He is expected to make an announcement at his home, Mar-A-Lago, in Florida, on Tuesday . It is expected to be an official announcement that he is planning to run for the 2024 presidential election.

NHL News: Avalanche C Shane Bowers (upper body) out 6 weeks

Colorado Avalanche forward Shane Bowers will be sidelined approximately six weeks with an upper-body injury, coach Jared Bednar confirmed Sunday.

A 2017 first-round pick, Bowers was hurt after playing less than two minutes in his NHL debut on Thursday night against Nashville.

He skated three shifts and attempted one shot on goal in 1:46 of ice time before exiting the 5-3 win against the Predators.

Bowers, 23, registered two goals and four assists in 10 games with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles this season.

The Ottawa Senators selected the Nova Scotia native with the 28th pick in 2017 and traded him to the Avalanche that November.

NHL News: Rangers hope home is hospitable as Coyotes visit

When the New York Rangers headed out for a two-game Midwest swing, they were dejected about another home loss, especially one to the Islanders.

After experiencing mixed results on their trip, the Rangers will attempt to halt a three-game home losing streak (0-2-1) Sunday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes.

New York is a pedestrian 3-3-3 at home this season, where they have been outscored 27-22 and have blown multi-goal leads in their past two home contests. On Tuesday, the Rangers followed up a 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings by allowing three goals in the final 20 minutes of a 4-3 loss to the Islanders.

After the defeat to the Islanders, the Rangers busted out when 12 players registered at least one point in an 8-2 rout at Detroit on Thursday that featured six goals in the third period. On Saturday, New York took a 2-1 loss at Nashville when it outshot the Predators 35-18 and went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a four-minute man advantage late in the third.

“It wasn’t as good as it should have been,” New York coach Gerard Gallant said of the team’s power play. “I mean, that was the difference, obviously. They had some looks, but they didn’t have the premier looks that they usually get. Just a little off, that’s all.”

The inability to score meant the end of seven-game point streaks by Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. Zibanejad had 10 points (five goals, five assists) while Kreider had nine points (four goals, five assists) during their seven games.

“We controlled the play and we just need to keep doing what we’re doing,” New York’s Barclay Goodrow added. “It can get frustrating, but we can’t get down. It’s all about moving on and getting the two points tomorrow night.”

Two weeks ago, the Rangers improved to 12-1-2 in the past 15 meetings with the Coyotes when Zibanejad scored the tiebreaking goal in the third on the power play in a 3-2 win in Arizona on Oct. 30.

The Rangers won that meeting after playing an afternoon game in Dallas the previous day.

This time, they took a late night flight back to the New York area while the Coyotes merely must cross the Hudson River for the game. They have been in the New York area since Wednesday.

Arizona is 3-1-0 on its 14-game road trip after taking a 4-2 loss Saturday night in Newark, N.J., to the red-hot New Jersey Devils. The Coyotes are on the lengthy trip and play 20 of their first 24 games on the road while a locker room annex is completed at their temporary new home, Mullett Arena on the Arizona State University campus.

Dylan Guenther and Clayton Keller scored tying goals on the power-play before the Coyotes allowed two goals in a span of 2:56 in the second period. Those goals gave Arizona 15 goals in 48 power-play opportunities (31.3 percent).

“Everyone out there has got a lot of confidence,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “We just want to keep doing everything we can to stay as hot as we can on the power play.”

The Coyotes finished with 18 shots on goal and have only cracked 30 shots once this season. That was in a 7-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Nov. 3 before they opened the trip with wins over the Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres and Islanders.

NHL News: Bruins put unbeaten home record on line vs. Canucks

Looking to build off a Saturday win in Buffalo, the Boston Bruins will have three opportunities to continue their season-opening home success this week.

A rare Sunday night game against the Vancouver Canucks both begins Boston’s homestand and completes a back-to-back weekend set for both teams.

The Bruins boast a franchise-record-tying 8-0-0 record at home this season, making them the only NHL team without a blemish in their home arena to start the campaign.

Following Saturday’s 3-1 win in Buffalo, the Bruins return home with a three-game winning streak. Captain Patrice Bergeron scored twice, while Jakub Zboril’s first NHL goal fell in between and stood as the game-winning tally.

All three Bruins goals came unanswered after Buffalo scored a short-handed goal in the first period.

“(Saturday) was the first time, I think, in the whole year where I thought we were on our heels and didn’t have our skating legs for 40 minutes,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “There wasn’t a Picasso moment out there in the first two periods besides the special teams and our goaltender.”

The goaltender was Keith Kinkaid, who made 30 saves in his first start since he was recalled in the wake of Jeremy Swayman’s injury.

Like Zboril scoring, it was yet another sign of the organization’s depth and ability to win in different ways.

“We can score, we can defend and we can check,” Montgomery said. “And if you wanna play rough and physical, we can do that too.”

The Bruins have outscored their opponents 23-7 in third periods this season. Two of those goals came on Saturday.

“We’re successful when we play Bruins hockey, especially in that last 20 — we got back to playing on our toes and playing hard, and being on the forecheck, and getting some pucks back,” Bergeron said.

Sunday’s contest marks Vancouver’s fourth stop on a five-game road trip. The trip started in Ottawa and continued in Montreal and Toronto. The Canucks will finish it off in Buffalo on Tuesday night.

The Canucks dropped a 3-2 decision in Toronto on Saturday despite captain Bo Horvat continuing his stellar pace with his team-leading 13th goal, a mark that he didn’t reach until the 38th game of last season.

Toronto’s three goals all came in the second period, erasing Vancouver’s 2-0 lead. Spencer Martin made 27 saves, but a tying goal to support him wasn’t in the cards.

“I don’t think we quit or anything. We tried to the end,” Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “At that point we didn’t get shots through, and you’ve got to get shots through. … If they got through, maybe it would have been a different story.”

Horvat’s seven goals in November are the most among all NHL players, while only Edmonton captain Connor McDavid has a higher season total (15) entering play on Sunday.

“I just want to play hard, I want to prove to myself that I’m a good hockey player, a guy that can be a leader, score and be a 200-foot player,” Horvat said. “I want to prove that to myself and to everyone else.”

Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes is on a run of his own, having recorded at least one assist in nine consecutive games. The only Canucks defenseman to put together a longer streak is Dennis Kearns, who had assists in 11 straight games in 1976-77.
