NBA roundup: Joel Embiid nets career-high 59 in Sixers’ win

Joel Embiid had a massive performance, scoring a career-high 59 points and flirting with a quadruple-double, to lead the host Philadelphia 76ers to a 105-98 win over the Utah Jazz on Sunday night.

A night after carrying the Sixers to a solid 121-109 win over Atlanta with 42 points, Embiid followed up with a masterpiece, which included 19-for-28 shooting, 11 rebounds, eight assists and a career-high-tying seven blocked shots. He even sank his second 3-pointer of the season and had a steal.

Embiid, who hit 20 of 24 free throws, absolutely dominated the fourth quarter and especially down the stretch. He scored 26 of the Sixers’ 27 points in the final 12 minutes, including the final 13 for his club after the Jazz took their final lead at 94-92.

Five of Embiid’s blocks came in the fourth quarter, including a swat with 1:20 remaining that helped the Sixers fend off the relentless Jazz.

Malik Beasley led a balanced Utah attack with 18 points off the bench. Lauri Markkanen had a quiet night with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Collin Sexton scored 15, Kelly Olynyk chipped in with 14 points and Jarred Vanderbilt added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Thunder 145, Knicks 135

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 17 points during a decisive run to end the third quarter for visiting Oklahoma City, which rode a red-hot shooting effort to overcome a historic first quarter by New York.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 37 points and Josh Giddey posted a triple-double (24 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds) for the Thunder, who shot 62.5 percent (55-of-88) — the third-best performance from the field since the franchise moved to Oklahoma City from Seattle prior to the 2008-09 season.

Julius Randle had a double-double (25 points, 10 rebounds) for the Knicks, who scored 48 points — their most ever in the first quarter — before the Thunder caught fire. Cam Reddish had 26 points while Immanuel Quickley scored 24 points off the bench for the Knicks, who have alternated losses with wins the past seven games.

Lakers 116, Nets 103

Anthony Davis had season highs with 37 points and 18 rebounds, Lonnie Walker IV added 25 points and Los Angeles led wire-to-wire to earn a victory over visiting Brooklyn despite playing without LeBron James.

Russell Westbrook had 14 points and 12 assists off the Lakers’ bench, while Austin Reaves had 15 points, as Los Angeles ended a five-game losing streak and won for just the third time this season. James missed his second consecutive game with a groin injury.

Kevin Durant scored 31 points with nine rebounds and seven assists as the Nets lost one day after defeating the Los Angeles Clippers on the road. Brooklyn is 4-2 since Kyrie Irving was given a team-imposed suspension.

Wizards 102, Grizzlies 92

Kristaps Porzingis scored 25 points, including a season-high six 3-pointers, and Washington extended its winning streak to four games with a victory over visiting Memphis.

Deni Avdija matched his career high with 21 points for Washington, while Corey Kispert added 12, Monte Morris had 10 points and six assists and Jordan Goodwin contributed 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Dillon Brooks led Memphis with 19 points, while Tyus Jones added 17, Santi Aldama had 15 and Steven Adams tallied 12 points with 10 rebounds. David Roddy scored 11 points off the bench.

Timberwolves 129, Cavaliers 124

Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell and Rudy Gobert all recorded double-doubles as Minnesota weathered a late-game rally behind Darius Garland’s career-high 51 points to beat host Cleveland.

Garland’s performance ignited Cleveland’s comeback after it was down by as many as 24, with 16 of his points coming in the final five minutes of regulation. The Cavs cut the deficit to two in the final minute, but Taurean Prince connected on four free throws in the last 13.1 seconds, part of his 19 total points, to keep Cleveland at bay.

With the win, the Timberwolves snapped a three-game losing skid while extending the Cavaliers’ own dip to four straight losses. Russell posted a season-high 30 points and a game-high 12 assists, while Towns (29 points, 13 rebounds) and Gobert (15 points, 13 rebounds) also played vital roles.

Nuggets 126, Bulls 103

Michael Porter Jr. scored a season-high 31 points and Jamal Murray added 23 to lead visiting Denver to a victory against Chicago.

Aaron Gordon (13 points), Bruce Brown (12) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (10) rounded out a balanced attack for the Nuggets, who won for the seventh time in the past nine games. Nikola Jokic contributed eight points, 14 assists and six rebounds in 28 minutes for Denver.

Chicago has lost four of five. Zach LaVine paced the Bulls with 21 points, while DeMar DeRozan followed with 16. Andre Drummond posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Patrick Williams (15 points) and Goran Dragic (11) also scored in double figures.

Kings 122, Warriors 115

Domantas Sabonis recorded 26 points, 22 rebounds and eight assists to help Sacramento post a victory over visiting Golden State.

De’Aaron Fox contributed 22 points, eight assists and three steals, and Keegan Murray had 21 points and three steals as Sacramento defeated the Warriors for the first time in three meetings this season. Kevin Huerter scored 17 points and Malik Monk added 12 as the Kings won their third consecutive game.

Stephen Curry scored 27 points and Andrew Wiggins had 26 for Golden State, which dropped to 0-7 on the road. Jordan Poole added 18 points and Klay Thompson tallied 17.

Serial Sex Offender Jeffery Morris Gets Life Sentence For Burning Alive Susie Zhao Professional Poker Player

0

Morris had previously been convicted of a sex crime
Oakland County Jail

Jeffery Morris, a convicted sex offender who brutally raped and burned alive professional poker player Susie “Susie Q” Zhao, was sentenced to life in prison. According to reports, Jeffery Morris was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday. Less than a month earlier, Morris was found guilty at trial of first-degree murder and felony murder in the commission of second-degree criminal sexual activity.

Less than an hour was needed for the jury to reach a decision. When given the chance to speak during his sentence, the 62-year-old offender chose not to, although he did say he planned to appeal the ruling. The murderer who had been found guilty addressed the judge, saying that he would return for an appeal. The case was “one of the most excruciating trials” in judge Martha Anderson’s career, she said.

Zhao, a rising star in the world of professional poker, left Los Angeles and moved to Michigan in June 2020 to live with her mother and stepfather. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia as an adult. Her mother last saw her on July 12, 2020. Her burnt remains were discovered the following day in a wooded area of the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Oakland County.

The prosecution claims that Morris, a homeless man convicted of a sex offence in 1989, met Zhao at a hotel in Waterford Township where she usually stayed before engaging in what has been called a perverted sexual fantasy involving bondage.

Susie Zhao

On July 12, 2020, they reportedly connected at a motel in Waterford Township where she frequently stayed. Zhao was severely raped, with her genitals being damaged, tied with zip ties, drenched with gasoline, and burned alive, according to the evidence. While still alive, she was tied up with zip ties, poured in gasoline, and set ablaze. Zhao’s body was so severely charred when it was found by two guys that at first, they believed it to be a Halloween joke or a burned mannequin.

The defense emphasized the unidentified male DNA discovered during the inquiry and claimed that investigators overlooked tire tracks at the location. However, Morris was detained in August 2020 after authorities used phone data to link him to the spot where Zhao’s body was discovered.

PGA News: Tony Finau cruises to victory at Houston Open

0

Tony Finau shot a final-round, 1-under 69 to coast to a four-stroke victory at the Cadence Bank Houston Open on Sunday.

Finau held a share of the lead through one round at Memorial Park Golf Course, then separated himself from the pack Friday with an 8-under 62. He had a four-shot lead entering Sunday en route to his 16-under 264 and his third victory of the calendar year.

“When I teed off this morning I felt a little off, honestly. You know, it’s not easy sleeping on the lead,” Finau said. “I didn’t know if I had it in me, but you just take it a shot at a time.”

Tyson Alexander shot a final-round 66 to finish in second place at 12 under in his eighth career PGA Tour start. England’s Ben Taylor (70 Sunday) was third at 11 under.

Finau birdied four holes on the front nine, including two par 3s, to reach 19 under for the event. He led by as many as eight shots. Bogeys at Nos. 10, 14 and 15 brought him back to earth a bit but were not enough to put his result in any doubt.

“I’ve never had an eight-shot lead on the final round on tour,” Finau said. “It’s an interesting mindset. Yeah, a little bit of ‘don’t screw it up,’ or maybe ‘if we hit some good shots we can extend this lead.’ You kind of live in the middle … I kind of lived in the middle out there.”

Entering the 2021-22 season, Finau had had a successful PGA Tour career but just two wins to show for it. He won back-to-back events in July, the 3M Open and the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and now has his first win of the 2022-23 campaign.

Finau ranked fourth in the field this week in driving accuracy, second in greens in regulation and second in strokes gained: putting.

“Probably the best driving week I’ve had in my career, at least that’s how I felt,” Finau said. “Yesterday for the first time in my career I hit all 13 fairways, 100 percent of fairways in regulation. I’ve never done that in my career, so definitely drove the ball. And it’s a lethal combo when I feel like this is the best putting week I’ve had as well. So you combine those two and you can get kind of a runaway win like I had.”

Alexander posted five birdies and just one bogey for his third 66 of the week. He said he came away from the week knowing that he can compete on tour.

“I wish Tony would have taken the week off,” Alexander said, “but yeah, you know, 132 players (in the field), I think one guy’s going to beat me, so that’s what it’s all about, just trying to beat as many people as possible.”

LPGA News: Nelly Korda goes back-to-back at Pelican Women’s Championship

0

Nelly Korda shot a 6-under-par 64 to overcome a two-shot final-round deficit and repeat as champion of the Pelican Women’s Championship on Sunday at Belleair, Fla.

Korda finished at 14-under 196 to earn a one-stroke victory over Lexi Thompson (66), while Allisen Corpuz (69) finished three shots off the lead. Corpuz had a one-shot lead through two rounds after she opened with consecutive 65s.

The tournament was shortened from 72 to 54 holes after Tropical Storm Nicole forced Pelican Golf Club to stay closed Thursday.

Korda earned her eighth career LPGA victory and her first since winning the Pelican Women’s Championship last November when she finished at 17 under and won in a four-player playoff that included Thompson.

Korda is projected to return to No. 1 in the world rankings. She had to battle through a difficult 2022, which included recovering from a blood clot in a vein in her left arm.

“Honestly amazing; it’s been a tough year,” Korda said on the Gold Channel broadcast. “Lots of ups and lots of downs. Missed two cuts in Arkansas and Dallas, but kept my head high and worked really hard during my few weeks off, and feel really good to be back out.”

Korda finished off the victory despite a bogey on the 18th hole. She was 3 under on the front nine and 5 under on her round through 13 holes. She took command with birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 to earn the victory.

Thompson was 4 under through eight holes in the final round after consecutive birdies at Nos. 5-8. She birdied Nos. 13 and 14, but those came after consecutive bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12 that robbed her momentum. She was even par on the back nine after finishing with four consecutive pars.

Corpuz’s chances started to slip away when she went 1 over on the front nine after eight pars and a bogey at No. 8. She had a birdie at the par-4 11th hole but gave that away with a bogey at No. 12 and could not make up the difference even with a pair of birdies at Nos. 16 and 17.

Morgane Metraux of Switzerland (64 Sunday), Hannah Green of Australia (65) and Gaby Lopez of Mexico (67) finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 9 under. Lizette Salas (67), Ally Ewing (69) and Maria Fassi of Mexico (71) were tied for seventh place at 8 under.

The LPGA moves on to next week’s season-ending $7-million CME Group Tour Championship at Naples, Fla.

“I’m most excited about spending the night in my own bed tonight, and then I’ll do some laundry and drive down (Monday) hopefully fresh,” Korda said. “But right now I’m just going to soak this all up with my family, and next week is a new week, so I’m going to try to get back in shape and see how it goes.”

WTA News: Switzerland beats Australia to win Billie Jean King Cup final

0

Jil Teichmann and Belinda Bencic each won their respective singles matches to lead Switzerland to a 2-0 win over Australia in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday in the Billie Jean King Cup final.

The victory marks Switzerland’s first title in three finals appearances, which included last year’s trip in which it fell to the Russian Tennis Federation. Alongside Teichmann and Bencic, Viktorija Golubic and Simona Waltert made up the winning squad.

“It’s extremely sweet,” Swiss captain Heinz Guenthardt said. “Maybe it’s even sweeter after last year. … You obviously can’t compare. We have been working for this a long time. Not just this week.”

Teichmann started things off with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over Storm Sanders. Teichmann held an 8-0 advantage in aces and won six of nine break points. However, Sanders did hold the advantage in winners, posting 31 to Teichmann’s 22.

Bencic had a much easier time dispatching Ajla Tomljanovich, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory to clinch the crown. Bencic won 24 of 32 (69.6 percent) first-service points and finished with 13 unforced errors, while Tomljanovich racked up 23.

“We were finalists last year and we were so heartbroken,” Bencic said. “(Teichmann) came up to me and said that next year we’re going to take it. And we did! I’m so incredibly proud.

“We will remember Glasgow for the rest of our lives.”

ATP News: Taylor Fritz upsets Rafael Nadal to kick off Nitto ATP Finals

0

No. 8 seed Taylor Fritz of the United States took down top-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain 7-6 (3), 6-1 on the first day of round-robin play at the Nitto ATP Finals on Sunday in Turin, Italy.

Fritz got ahead 3-0 in the first-set tiebreaker before staving off the 22-time Grand Slam winner. The second set was much neater for Fritz as he won the final five games, though Nadal saved four break points during the sixth game before succumbing on Fritz’s fifth try.

“It feels great. I felt like coming out first match, especially for my hopes of getting out of the group, it was going to be really important,” Fritz said after the match. “I didn’t want to put myself in a position where I needed to win out if I wanted to move on. I came out and played a great match, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Nadal saved seven of nine break points in all, but he never pushed Fritz to break point. Fritz had 23 winners and just 10 unforced errors, while Nadal had 18 winners but 22 unforced errors.

Nadal is now on a three-match losing streak. After Frances Tiafoe eliminated him in the U.S. Open Round of 16, Nadal has played just one other tournament, losing to Tommy Paul in the Round of 32 of the Rolex Paris Masters.

Fritz and Nadal are playing in the Green Group to open the ATP Finals, along with third seed Casper Ruud of Norway and fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada.

In Sunday’s other match, Ruud got past Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime led the first-set tiebreaker 2-1, and after Ruud rallied back with three straight points, he pushed back to tie it 4-4. Ruud won the next three points from there and kept it going in the second set, where he came back from a trio of deficits by breaking Auger-Aliassime’s serve in the seventh game.

“Felix has been on a roll this fall and I knew he was going to come out strong,” Ruud said. “I was playing well, I found some of my best level that I have played in recent months, so I am extremely happy to be able to bring that out here in the finals. I knew if I wanted to have any chance against any of the guys in my group I would have to bring my A-game, and today I was able to do so.”

The Nitto ATP Finals are the season finale for the top eight players in the world. After two groups of four play a single round robin, the top two players from each group will advance to a single-elimination bracket.

Green Group match record (set record, game record)
1. Taylor Fritz 1-0 (2-0, 13-7)
2. Casper Ruud 1-0 (2-0, 13-10)
3. Felix Auger-Aliassime 0-1 (0-2, 10-13)
4. Rafael Nadal 0-1 (0-2, 7-13)

Red Group (will begin play Monday)
No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas
No. 4 seed Daniil Medvedev
No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev
No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic

CHAMP News: Padraig Harrington wins season finale, Steven Alker hoists Schwab Cup

Padraig Harrington ran away with a seven-stroke victory at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Sunday in Phoenix, but that still wasn’t enough to wrest the season-long Schwab Cup title from Steven Alker of New Zealand.

Alker, once a golfing journeyman who never won on the PGA Tour, came away with the biggest prize on the PGA Tour Champions Sunday.

Even though Alker finished eight shots behind Ireland’s Harrington at the playoff finale, he had enough of a points advantage that his third-place finish was still plenty to claim the Schwab Cup.

“Honestly, just having friends and family and the support here this week has been amazing,” the 51-year-old said. “It will come out tomorrow, it will come out tomorrow sometime, but amazing. Playing with Padraig today, it was kind of difficult because do I chase him, do I protect? I just tried to play my game as good as I could, but he played amazing and (I’m) just glad to be champion.”

Harrington took a five-shot lead over Alker after three rounds at Phoenix Country Club by shooting a 9-under 62 on Saturday. He posted his second straight bogey-free round, a 6-under 65, on Sunday to get to 27-under 257 and tie Jack Nicklaus’ PGA Tour Champions record for the lowest 72-hole score relative to par.

“Kind of glad I didn’t beat him,” Harrington said of Nicklaus’ record.

Harrington, 51, had a chance to win the Schwab Cup but needed Alker to finish lower in the tournament standings.

The three-time major winner played with Alker throughout the week and called him “a truly deserved winner” of the Cup.

“It’s not like he’s just come flash in the pan at the end of the year and won a couple events and all of a sudden won the Schwab Cup,” Harrington said. “The pressure’s been on him right from the start of the year all the way through. He had a lead and several of us were catching him all year. It’s very impressive that he’s not just held on, but he’s won in style.”

Alker, who shot his second consecutive 68 Sunday and finished at 19-under 265, has won five tournaments on the 50-and-older circuit since joining in the summer of 2021. Before his senior success, Alker had won on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Canadian Tour and the Web.com Tour (now the Korn Ferry Tour).

He said it took “a lot of hard yards” to reach this destination.

“It’s just, you know, I’ve played everywhere,” Alker said. “I’ve played everywhere and I think that kind of helped today in a way, just playing the PGA Tour and Australasia and Asia and Korn Ferry. Yeah, I’ve played everywhere. It’s been an amazing journey and just to be here and to have this opportunity has been amazing.”

Germany’s Alex Cejka shot a final-round 65 to get to second place at 20 under.

Banged-up Washington rides winning streak into meeting with Utah Tech

Two games into the season, and Washington is already battling injuries.

The Huskies (2-0), who will play host to Utah Tech (1-1) on Monday night in Seattle, were missing two starters — transfers Keion Brooks Jr. (Kentucky) and Noah Williams (Washington State) — in a 75-67 victory against North Florida on Friday.

Freshman Keyon Menifield, making his first start, scored 21 points to pace the Huskies.

“We’ve had great freshmen over the years … but he’s special,” said UW senior Jamal Bey, who had 14 points and seven rebounds. “He knows how to put the ball in the rim. I said it (during the game). I told him: ‘You just like putting the ball in the rim, huh? It’s that easy for you.’ He’s pretty hard to guard. He helps us a lot.”

Franck Kepnang, a transfer from Oregon, added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies. Cole Bajema had seven points and 11 boards.

Williams suffered a leg injury in a season-opening victory against Weber State and will likely miss several weeks, UW coach Mike Hopkins said. Brooks (leg), who was hurt in practice, is expected back much sooner.

Utah Tech, which was rebranded from Dixie State this past summer, evened its record with a 69-63 victory against visiting Cal State-Northridge on Saturday night in St. George, Utah.

Cameron Gooden had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Trailblazers, who are in their second season in NCAA Division I. Frank Staine added 10 points and six rebounds.

Utah Tech’s four-game trip also includes a visit to No. 17 Arizona on Thursday.

“We’ve got nothing to lose. We want to come out there and show we belong at Division I and we are not just another Division I team,” Gooden told the St. George News. “We are a Division I team that wants to compete and be in every game as possible.”

Penn State, Butler boast high-flying offenses as matchup approaches

Two games into the season, Penn State already is earning a reputation as a formidable offensive squad.

The Nittany Lions hope to author a third straight dominant performance Monday when Butler pays a visit to University Park, Pa., as part of the Big Ten versus Big East Gavitt Tip-Off Games.

Penn State (2-0) has scored at least 90 points in back-to-back outings for the first time since December 2016 and has drained 34 3-pointers in its first two games, including a school-record 18 in a season-opening win over Winthrop.

Most recently, the Nittany Lions shot 70.4 percent in the second half (and 57.9 percent overall) in a 90-65 victory over Loyola Maryland on Thursday. Camren Wynter paced Penn State with 18 points in that one, while Jaden Pickett dished out 11 assists.

“We’re getting contributions from a lot of different guys,” Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “(We had) 21 assists after having a big 24 the other night. When we share the ball like that, it’s contagious. We’ve got a bunch of guys that can make plays off the dribble, that can shoot open threes. So, it opens up a lot of stuff for us.”

Butler (1-0) is also coming off a solid offensive display, as the team shot 56.3 percent from the floor in its season-opening 89-53 rout of New Orleans.

Graduate transfer Manny Bates led the team with 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in his Bulldogs debut. Chuck Harris contributed 17 points, while Eric Hunter Jr. added 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

The biggest weak point for Butler was its 3-point shooting (4 of 24), although coach Thad Matta believes “it’s going to be fine because we have a lot of guys who can shoot the basketball” and Harris doesn’t seem like he’s losing any sleep either.

“We know we can make those shots,” Harris said. “They’re gonna fall. They didn’t tonight, but they will fall.”

Butler has won two of the three all-time meetings with PSU, although the teams have not squared off since 1992.
