Mavs edge Blazers behind Luka Doncic’s triple-double

Luka Doncic collected 42 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, and Spencer Dinwiddie made six 3-pointers to fuel the host Dallas Mavericks to a 117-112 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.

Doncic made 13 of 22 shots from the floor and 15 of 18 from the foul line as a means to atone for what he labeled as a pair of “awful” performances during Dallas’ two-game losing skid. The three-time All-Star’s “awful” performances consisted of 24 points, six rebounds and six assists in the Mavericks’ loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday and 22, nine and six, respectively, in a setback at Washington on Thursday.

Dinwiddie finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Christian Wood added 19 points in his return from a two-game absence due to a sprained knee. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 16 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who shot 50.6 percent from the floor to improve to 6-1 at home this season.

Jerami Grant scored a season-high 37 points and Damian Lillard recorded 29 points and 12 assists for the Trail Blazers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt in the finale of their six-game road trip.

Dinwiddie drained a pair of 3-pointers to stake Dallas to a 109-106 lead with 1:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lillard answered with a layup before Dinwiddie converted again from beyond the arc. Dorian Finney-Smith added another 3-pointer to extend the Mavericks’ lead to 115-108 with 54.2 seconds left to seal the win.

Anfernee Simons converted an alley-oop layup to give Portland a 98-92 lead before Dallas scored the game’s next nine points. The Trail Blazers evened the score with three free throws before Lillard’s layup gave them the lead, however Doncic answered with a layup of his own.

Hardaway sank a pair of 3-pointers and Dinwiddie added one of his own to give Dallas a 49-33 lead with 7:55 remaining in the second quarter. The Trail Blazers responded with a 24-6 run to claim a two-point advantage before Doncic drained a pair of free throws and a jumper to give the Mavericks a 59-57 lead at halftime.

NCAAF News: West Virginia edges Oklahoma on last-second FG

Casey Legg’s tiebreaking 25-yard field goal on the final play gave West Virginia a 23-20 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.

In the Mountaineers’ first home win over the Sooners and first overall win against the Sooners since moving to the Big 12 in 2012, backup quarterback Garrett Greene ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 138 yards and another score.

The Mountaineers got the ball back with 6:24 remaining and the game tied, and deliberately moved the ball downfield with plenty of help from Greene.

Greene hit Bryce Ford-Wheaton on a fourth-down conversion pass to keep the drive alive, then West Virginia kept it on the ground.

Greene’s seven-yard run on third-and-6 from the Oklahoma 17 put the Mountaineers in position to run out the clock, and they did, with Legg kicking the field goal as time expired.

West Virginia scored the final 10 points, tying it early in the fourth quarter on Greene’s 11-yard touchdown run.

Eric Gray rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns for the Sooners, who outgained West Virginia 426-406.

Neither offense had much success until late in the first half.

The Sooners (5-5, 2-5 Big 12) got the ball back at their own 4 with just more than two minutes remaining, kicking off a wild finish to the first half.

Earlier in the half, Oklahoma receiver Marvin Mims dropped two key passes.

On this drive, though, he didn’t, as Dillon Gabriel’s 67-yard pass to Mims set up Eric Gray for a 12-yard touchdown run that put the Sooners ahead 10-0.

West Virginia (4-6, 2-5) returned the kick near midfield, then Greene, who had alternated with starter JT Daniels in the first half, led the way with a 33-yard run followed by a 5-yard touchdown run.

But the Mountaineers holder couldn’t handle the snap on the extra-point try. Legg picked it up but was hit hard from behind by Oklahoma’s Robert Spears-Jennings to jar the ball loose.

Billy Bowman scooped it up and returned it 88 yards for a defensive two-point conversion to give the Sooners a 12-6 lead at halftime.

Late in the third, Ford-Wheaton caught an 8-yard TD pass from Greene to put West Virginia ahead 13-12. But about two minutes later, Gray’s 5-yard TD run gave Oklahoma a 20-13 lead entering the fourth.

Pelicans silence Rockets at finish, win 119-106

Zion Williamson scored 26 points and the host New Orleans Pelicans scored the final 13 points of the game to defeat the Houston Rockets 119-106 on Saturday night.

Larry Nance Jr. added 22 points, Brandon Ingram scored 20 and Jose Alvarado had 12 for the Pelicans, who scored a season-low 95 points two nights earlier in a loss to Portland.

Jalen Green scored 33 points, Kevin Porter Jr. added 23 and Eric Gordon 15 for the Rockets, who lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Alvarado and Porter were called for double technicals and ejected for an altercation in the final seconds.

Ingram broke a 106-all tie by making two free throws, and Alvarado and Ingram each made a 3-pointer to trigger the decisive run.

The Rockets scored the first five points of the third quarter to pull within eight points.

Williamson and Herbert Jones scored six points each as the Pelicans expanded the lead to 78-60.

Green scored 13 straight Houston points, including three 3-pointers, as the Rockets sprinted to an 87-86 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Houston started the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run before Alvarado’s 3-pointer produced the Pelicans’ first basket and trimmed the lead to 95-90.

Gordon answered with a three-point play, but Williamson’s driving basket gave New Orleans a 102-100 lead midway through the quarter.

Porter twice tied the score with baskets, but Houston didn’t score in the final 2:58.

The score was tied five times in the first six minutes before Nance broke the final tie by making a 3-pointer.

He added another 3-pointer and a layup and Devonte’ Graham did the same as the Pelicans built an 11-point lead.

Green finished the scoring with a 3-pointer that gave him 10 points in the period, which ended with New Orleans holding a 34-26 lead.

The Rockets scored the first four points of the second quarter, but six Pelicans scored four or more points each as the lead expanded to 18. Porter’s 3-pointer and a layup by Green left New Orleans with a 63-50 halftime lead.

NCAAF News: Vanderbilt stuns No. 24 Kentucky in last minute of play

Mike Wright’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Will Sheppard with 32 seconds left allowed Vanderbilt to break its 26-game Southeastern Conference losing streak, stunning Kentucky 24-21 on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky.

After Chris Rodriguez Jr.’s 72-yard run gave Kentucky (6-4, 3-4) a 21-17 lead late, Wright led the Commodores (4-6, 1-5) 80 yards on 12 plays on the streak-breaking drive.

The key was a 4th-and-11 pass of 40 yards to Quincy Skinner Jr. to the Kentucky 8, setting up the game-winning score three plays later.

The win was Vanderbilt’s first in the SEC since a 21-14 victory over Missouri on Oct. 19, 2019 — the third-longest losing streak in conference history.

Wright was 12 of 23 for 184 yards with a TD and an interception. He also rushed for 126 yards on 11 carries and a score, while running back Ray Davis had 129 yards on 26 attempts and a TD.

A 17-point favorite, the Wildcats were led by Rodriguez’s game-high 162 yards on 18 rushes with two TDs. Will Levis went 11-for-23 for 109 yards with an interception.

Kentucky got good field position when defensive back Carrington Valentine recovered a fumble on the game’s second play and returned it 21 yards. That set up Matt Ruffolo’s 47-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.

But on an RPO play on the ensuing possession, Wright dashed 59 yards for his fifth TD. Yet Kentucky responded with a 15-play drive that took 8:21 off the clock, getting a second Ruffolo field goal — a 27-yarder — to tighten it to 7-6.

The Wildcats’ defense thwarted a drive when Keidron Smith intercepted a Wright pass at the goal line. Kentucky drove 61 yards in 10 plays, but Ruffolo’s 37-yard attempt for its second lead was blocked by Nate Clifton.

On Vanderbilt’s first series of the second half, Davis capped a 10-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge at 7:47 for a 14-6 lead. His 45-yard run set up the score, but Ruffolo trimmed it to five with a 39-yard kick on the next possession.

In the fourth quarter, Rodriguez keyed a 66-yard drive and ended it with a 5-yard run. Vanderbilt’s Joseph Bulovas then kicked a 26-yard field goal for a 17-15 lead.

Heat power past Hornets, 132-115

Max Strus poured in 31 points and the host Miami Heat had far too much offensive firepower for the Charlotte Hornets to deal with in a 132-115 victory Saturday night.

Bam Adebayo had 24 points, and Jimmy Butler and reserve Gabe Vincent both posted 20 points as the Heat won their second game in a row after a two-game skid.

The Hornets had good news with the season debut of standout guard LaMelo Ball, who had missed the first 13 games with an injury. Despite his 15 points, Charlotte dropped its eighth game in a row.

Terry Rozier’s 22 points and Kelly Oubre Jr.’s 20 points paced the Hornets, who also received 15 points from Nick Richards. Ball contributed six rebounds and six assists in his 28 minutes of action while shooting 6-for-17 from the field — just 1-for-9 on 3-pointers.

It was the second meeting in three nights in the same arena after the Heat beat the Hornets 117-112 in overtime in the first matchup.

The Heat pulled away in this one, overcoming a halftime deficit by compiling a 45-25 scoring edge in the third quarter. Miami scored 22 points in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half and shortly after that stretched its margin to 84-69 on a Strus basket.

Miami ended up making 16 shots from 3-point range, while the Hornets were 9-for-31 from long range.

Strus was 10-for-16 from the field, including 8-for-14 on threes. Adebayo, who had 15 rebounds, didn’t attempt a 3-pointer but checked in at 11-for-18 from the floor.

Kyle Lowry supplied 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Heat, who shot 52.7 percent overall from the field to go with 18 of 21 on free throws.

The teams played an entertaining first quarter that ended with Miami up 34-33 as each team connected on five 3-points shots.

The Hornets went ahead 59-57 at halftime, shooting 53.5 percent from the field in the opening 24 minutes.

NCAAF News: Riley Leonard fuels Duke past reeling Virginia Tech

Riley Leonard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Duke’s defense dominated after an early blunder in a 24-7 victory against visiting Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon in Durham, N.C.

Leonard completed 19 of 31 passes for 262 yards with an interception.

Duke (7-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), which hadn’t played a home game in nearly a month, stayed in contention for the ACC’s Coastal Division title pending results later in the day.

Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells was 16-for-28 for 177 yards and a touchdown, but the Hokies (2-8, 1-6) lost their seventh game in a row. They remained winless in six road games.

Virginia Tech was held to 281 yards of total offense and 13 first downs. The Hokies had 104 rushing yards.

Duke’s Jalon Calhoun was the game’s leading receiver with 94 yards on five catches, while teammate Jontavis Robertson picked up 81 yards on five receptions. Running back Jordan Waters gained 61 yards on 15 carries.

The Hokies scored on their second snap of the game after Wells connected with Da’Wain Lofton for a 53-yard touchdown. Lofton ended up the team’s top receiver with 75 yards on three catches.

Duke got on the board on Todd Pelino’s 25-yard field goal.

Leonard passed 24 yards to Nicky Dalmolin for a go-ahead touchdown in the second quarter.

Both teams missed long field goals in the final minute of the first half.

Leonard rushed for a 5-yard score for his 10th rushing touchdown of the season midway through the third quarter. That capped an 11-play, 62-yard drive.

Leonard threw a 6-yards pass Robertson for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Duke won for just the second time in the last seven meetings with Virginia Tech.

NCAAF News: Aggressive defense propels Pitt in rout of Virginia

M.J. Devonshire and Marquis Williams each returned an interception for a touchdown as visiting Pitt overwhelmed Virginia from the start on its way to a 37-7 Atlantic Coast Conference victory Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.

Israel Abanikanda added 121 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and Kedon Slovis threw for 208 yards and a score for the Panthers (6-4, 3-3), which became bowl eligible while ending the postseason hopes of the Cavaliers (3-7, 1-6).

Pitt also sacked Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong eight times and held the Cavaliers to 144 yards. Including the sacks, Virginia had minus 8 yards on 24 rushing attempts.

Calijah Kancy had three sacks and John Morgan III added two before he was ejected along with Virginia center Ty Furnish for fighting in the third quarter.

The first interception came from Devonshire, who crossed in front of a receiver and raced 29 yards untouched up the Pitt sideline to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.

On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Williams made Armstrong pay again as he picked off another pass near the Pitt sideline and streaked 39 yards to the end zone.

When the Pitt offense finally got on the field, it produced a 63-yard scoring drive. Abanikanda, who entered Saturday as the nation’s all-purpose yardage leader, carried on seven of the drive’s eight plays. His 1-yard plunge made it 21-0.

The next time Pitt got the ball, Slovis scrambled out of the pocket and found Bub Means open in the end zone on a 31-yard touchdown. The play put the Panthers up 28-0 before the game was 13 minutes old.

After a scoreless second quarter, Pitt increased its lead to 31-0 on the first of three field goals from Ben Sauls.

Virginia broke through late in the third quarter with a 65-yard march capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from Armstrong to Malachi Fields.

Armstrong, who was without his top three receivers for the second straight game, finished with 17 completions in 33 attempts for 152 yards.

Slovis completed 14 of 24 attempts, with Konta Mumphield making seven catches for 60 yards.

Joel Embiid’s 42-point night carries 76ers past Hawks

Joel Embiid scored a season-high 42 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers withstood a second-half charge by the visiting Atlanta Hawks for a 121-109 victory on Saturday.

Tyrese Maxey had 26 points and nine assists, Tobias Harris scored 21 points and Shake Milton had 11 for Philadelphia, which avenged a 104-95 loss to the Hawks on Thursday in Atlanta.

Trae Young led the Hawks with 27 points and 11 assists, while Dejounte Murray scored 23 points, DeAndre Hunter had 15 and Clint Capela recorded 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Atlanta trailed by as many as 27 points midway through the third quarter before closing on a 22-10 run to cut the deficit to 99-84.

The Hawks carried their momentum into the fourth quarter and pulled within 113-107 on AJ Griffin’s 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining.

Philadelphia quickly regained control with five straight points, including Matisse Thybulle’s trey with 1:39 left.

Embiid set the tone early with a dominant first quarter, scoring 14 points with four rebounds and three assists to give the Sixers 37-24 lead.

Philadelphia maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second quarter and moved ahead 53-35 on Maxey’s trey with 6:36 left in the half.

Maxey snapped out of a mini-slump after shooting 29.7 percent from the field in his last three games. The third-year point guard was 10 of 18 shooting against Atlanta, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

Philadelphia took a 67-51 lead into the break after shooting 56.8 percent from the field. Embiid had 18 points in the half to lead all scorers.

Sixers guard De’Anthony Melton missed the game with a back injury, while reserve guard Furkan Korkmaz scored seven points before exiting in the second quarter with a left knee injury.

Embiid finished with six assists and two blocks in 40 minutes while shooting 14 of 25 from the field and 13 of 16 from the foul line.

Atlanta forward Onyeka Okongwu, who recorded a double-double in Thursday’s win over Philadelphia, missed the game due to personal reasons.

NCAAF News: Purdue upsets No. 21 Illinois, forges tie atop Big Ten West

Aidan O’Connell connected with Payne Durham for a pair of touchdowns, including the decisive score, as Purdue upset No. 21 Illinois 31-24 on Saturday in Champaign, Ill.

With the win, the Boilermakers (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) moved into a tie for first in the Big Ten West with the Fighting Illini (7-3, 4-3).

O’Connell finished with 237 yards and three touchdowns on 25-for-40 passing, while Durham hauled in seven of those completions for 70 yards. Devin Mockobee added a rushing touchdown and gained 106 yards on 28 carries.

Purdue took a 28-21 lead early in the fourth when O’Connell found Durham in the end zone from 12 yards out. Kieren Douglas intercepted Illinois quarterback Tommy DeVito just under 10 minutes later, and Mitchell Fineran made good on a 25-yard field goal to secure the victory.

DeVito completed 18 of 32 passes for 201 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Chase Brown rushed for 98 yards and two TDs on 23 carries, snapping a streak in which he had gone for over 100 yards on the ground in 10 straight games.

Brown also exited the game with 22 seconds remaining with what appeared to be a serious leg injury.

The Boilermakers went ahead for the first time at the 6:57 mark of the third, closing a 12-play, 90-yard drive with O’Connell’s 5-yard scoring strike to Durham, who made a leaping grab in the back left corner of the end zone.

That advantage didn’t last long, though, as DeVito threw a 5-yard TD pass of his own to Brian Hightower on Illinois’ ensuing possession.

Devon Witherspoon intercepted O’Connell with just under two minutes left before halftime, but the pick was negated due to a defensive pass interference call on Witherspoon. O’Connell made the Fighting Illini pay immediately, connecting with Charlie Jones for a 32-yard touchdown on the next play to go into the break tied 14-all.

It took just six plays for Illinois to move 74 yards on its first drive of the game, and Brown capped the march with a 2-yard rushing TD for a 7-0 lead.

Pacers rally, pull away from Raptors in 14-point win

Buddy Hield’s 22 points led six Pacers in double digits and Indiana rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat the visiting Toronto Raptors 118-104 on Saturday in Indianapolis.

The Pacers fell behind 67-52 early into the third quarter before going on a 20-6 run. Despite Toronto briefly pushing its lead back to 10 points, Indiana remained within striking distance long enough into the fourth quarter to ultimately take control.

Indiana dominated the final period, 36-14, punctuated with a decisive 23-5 run to close the game.

Tyrese Haliburton’s deep 3-pointer with 3:20 remaining doubled the Pacers’ lead and ignited a 10-2 stretch over the game-breaking final run that squashed any chance of a Raptors rally.

Hield scored eight consecutive points — all but one of Indiana’s final nine — down the stretch. He knocked down the last two of his game-high five 3-pointers in the closing burst.

Hield’s 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc bolstered the Pacers to a 19-of-43 performance from deep. Bennedict Mathurin maintained his hot hand, one game after scoring an Indiana franchise record for a rookie in a single period, connecting on 3 of 4 attempts from outside on Saturday.

Mathurin finished with 15 points off the bench. Myles Turner recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds, Jalen Smith made three 3-pointers en route to 16 points and Aaron Nesmith and Isaiah Jackson both chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Indiana also got eight points each from Oshae Brissett, Andrew Nembhard and Haliburton. Haliburton dished out 15 assists, leading the way as the Pacers scored 33 of their 41 field goals off of assists.

O.G. Anunoby led all scorers with 26 points, but his 2-of-7 shooting from 3-point range reflected an overall issue for Toronto in the loss. The Raptors shot just 7 of 35 from long range and finished worse than 40 percent from the floor overall (37-for-94).
