NCAAF News: DJ Uiagalelei powers No. 10 Clemson past Louisville

DJ Uiagalelei threw for a touchdown and ran for another to help No. 10 Clemson record a 31-16 victory over visiting Louisville on Saturday.

The Tigers (9-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their 39th consecutive game at home and locked up a spot in the ACC championship game.

Uiagalelei completed 19 of 27 passes for 185 yards and connected with Antonio Williams for his lone touchdown strike in the second quarter. Williams caught 10 passes for 83 yards.

Phil Mafah rushed for 106 yards on 10 carries and Will Shipley Jr. had 97 yards on 19 totes for Clemson.

Louisville (6-3, 3-3 ACC) had its four-game winning streak snapped.

But that loss didn’t hurt as much as the one the Cardinals endured just before halftime when starting quarterback Malik Cunningham exited the game with an apparent shoulder injury.

Cunningham, who already entered Saturday’s game with an injured left hand, went down after a 26-yard run to end the first half. Cunningham suffered the hand injury last week in Louisville’s win over James Madison and had his hand taped up.

Brock Domann entered in the second half and completed 13 for 23 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown on the game’s final play to Braden Smith from 31 yards out. But Domann was intercepted once by Barrett Carter and could only muster one field goal drive before Clemson put it out of reach.

Louisville gained possession with just under four minutes left after a Shipley fumble but was stopped on downs.

Mafah put the game away with a 39-yard touchdown run with 2:13 to play in the fourth quarter.

Louisville kept itself in the game thanks to three Clemson fumbles but yielded 439 total yards to the Tigers offense.

Huge second half vaults Georgetown past Green Bay

Primo Spears hit eight straight shots and scored 21 points to lead a sizzling performance by Georgetown in the second half of a 92-58 win against Green Bay on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

Georgetown (2-0) also got 19 points from LSU transfer Brandon Murray and 18 from Maryland transfer Qudus Wahab. With five transfers in the starting lineup, the Hoyas won their second in a row after closing last season with 21 straight losses.

After leading 31-29 at the break 31-29, Georgetown made its first eight shots of the second half. The Hoyas finished the game shooting 62.3 percent, including 70.3 percent after intermission when they outscored the Phoenix 61-29.

Jordan Riley added a career-high 11 points off the Hoyas’ bench. Duquesne transfer Spears made 9 of 13 shots and had five assists. Wahab hit 8 of 12 attempts from the floor and had seven rebounds. Murray was 7 for 12 and dished seven assists.

Green Bay (0-2) was paced by Clarence Cummings III with 14 points and five rebounds. Playing in his hometown, Zae Blake came off the bench to score 13 points for the Phoenix.

During its shooting splurge at the start of the second half, Georgetown opened with a 12-2 spree to take a 43-31 lead.

USC Upstate transfer Bryson Mozone made back-to-back jumpers as Georgetown expanded its lead to 52-36.

Midway through the half, Wayne Bristol sank consecutive corner 3-pointers during a 12-0 run that put the Hoyas ahead 66-41.

The Phoenix shot 39.6 percent for the game and were out-rebounded 38-25.

Cummings made a 3-pointer to trigger a 7-0 run midway through the first half that gave Green Bay a 19-12 lead.

Georgetown answered with its own 13-point spree, started and finished by 3-pointers from Akok Akok and Murray.

In the final four minutes of the half, treys by Nate Jenkins and Randy Tucker helped the Phoenix whittle the deficit to 31-29.

NCAAF News: Penn State uses dominant ground game to blank Maryland

Freshman Nicholas Singleton ran for 122 yards and two long touchdowns on 11 carries as No. 14 Penn State walloped visiting Maryland 30-0 on Saturday in University Park, Pa.

Fellow freshman Kaytron Allen added 73 yards on 16 rushes as Penn State (8-2, 5-2 Big Ten) beat the Terrapins for the seventh time in their past eight meetings.

Penn State made life miserable for Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, sacking him seven times and causing him to finish 11-of-22 passing for 74 yards.

Roman Hemby managed 68 rushing yards for Maryland (6-4, 3-4), which has dropped two in a row.

Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford went 12 for 23 for 139 yards and one touchdown. A 3-yarder to tight end Brenton Strange opened the scoring.

Penn State faced a fourth-and-1 at the Maryland 45-yard-line, and Singleton found an open lane for an easy touchdown sprint with 4:55 left in the first quarter. History repeated two drives later, when Singleton took another fourth-and-1 carry and powered ahead for a 27-yard touchdown 11:37 before halftime.

The Terrapins tried a fourth-down conversion and came up short, and the Nittany Lions turned it into a 50-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar. Maryland then went three-and-out, allowing Penn State to drive 48 yards in 1:09 to squeeze in a 46-yard field goal and make the score 27-0 by halftime.

Maryland ran 27 plays in the first half and gained 27 yards. The Terps went 1-for-7 on third downs in the half.

Pinegar’s 21-yard field goal in the third quarter represented the only points in the second half, and up by 30, Penn State subbed in freshman Drew Allar at quarterback for most of the second half.

Maryland backup quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. needed to be helped off the field due to a lower-body injury during the fourth quarter.

The Terrapins were blanked for the first time since 2019 — when Penn State beat them 59-0.

NCAAF News: Alabama survives Ole Miss to return to win column

Will Reichard kicked two of his three field goals in the fourth quarter, Alabama’s defense stopped Ole Miss in the red zone late and the No. 9 Crimson Tide held on for a 30-24 victory over the No. 11 Rebels in Oxford, Miss., on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide (8-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) trailed 10-0 but fought back behind Bryce Young’s touchdowns to Cameron Latu, Jermaine Burton and Ja’Corey Brooks.

Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2) drove to the Alabama 14-yard-line, but on fourth-and-16 from the 20, defensive back Brian Branch broke up a pass in the end zone intended for Jonathan Mingo to seal the win with 46 seconds left.

The victory delivered the SEC West crown to LSU, which defeated Alabama and Ole Miss to earn a trip to Atlanta for the conference championship game.

Young was 21 of 33 for 209 yards and crafted his first 3-TD game since Sept. 24 against Vanderbilt when he tossed four. Jase McClellan rushed for 84 yards on 19 carries.

Jaxson Dart was 18 of 31 for 212 yards with a TD to Mingo. Malik Heath caught six passes for 123 yards, while Quinshon Judkins ran for 135 yards on 25 carries and tallied twice, giving him a school-record 15 rushing TDs in a season.

After Judkins shoved his way in for a score in the first quarter, the Rebels’ offense moved 32 yards to set up Jonathan Cruz’s 22-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead.

Young put the Crimson Tide on the board at 8:55 of the second by firing a 19-yard strike to Burton. But Otis Reese’s fumble recovery at midfield led to another Ole Miss score, as Judkins — from the wildcat formation — punched it in from a yard out for a 17-7 lead.

Alabama’s Terrion Arnold recovered a fumble at the Rebels 23, and Young found Latu for an 8-yard score with eight seconds left for a 17-14 Ole Miss halftime lead.

After Reichard tied it with a 39-yard field goal, Dart zipped a 3-yard ball to Mingo for a 24-17 advantage at 7:28 of the third. Young rolled out and tossed a 5-yarder to Brooks to knot the contest at 24 after three quarters.

Reichard connected again, from 23 yards, for the visitors’ first lead with 11:19 left and added another from 49.

NCAAF News: Blake Corum, No. 3 Michigan breeze past Nebraska

Heisman Trophy hopeful Blake Corum rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown as No. 3 Michigan rolled to a 34-3 victory over Nebraska Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich.

J.J. McCarthy completed 8-of-17 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score for Michigan (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten). Ronnie Bell caught four passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, while C.J. Stokes added 68 rushing yards on eight carries as the Wolverines rushed for 264 yards.

Michigan, which is 10-0 for the first time since 2006, plays Illinois in its home finale next Saturday before its annual showdown with arch-rival Ohio State on Nov. 26.

Nebraska starting quarterback Chubba Purdy suffered a leg injury on a running play late in the first half and did not return. Purdy still wound up as the team’s leading rusher with 39 yards in five carries.

The Cornhuskers (3-7, 2-5) were limited to 147 total yards.

Corum had 103 rushing yards by halftime as the Wolverines grabbed a 17-3 lead.

Michigan drove 80 yards in 12 plays during its first possession, capping it off with Corum’s 2-yard touchdown run. McCarthy completed a 25-yard pass to Bell during that drive.

A 28-yard completion from McCarthy to Colston Loveland and a 12-yard run by Corum set up the Wolverines’ next touchdown, a 9-yard pass from McCarthy to Bell midway through the second quarter.

Timmy Bleekrode’s 37-yard field goal put Nebraska on the board. Michigan’s Jake Moody answered that with a 30-yard field goal with one second left in the half.

A 10-play, 65-yard drive gave Michigan a three-touchdown lead late in the third quarter. Corum had 33 rushing yards in that span and McCarthy finished it off by cutting to his left on a 3-yard run.

Stokes gained 46 yards on the Wolverines’ next scoring drive. McCarthy hit Bell with a 29-yard gain but Bell fumbled just before the goal line. Andrel Anthony recovered it near the end line with 9:39 remaining.

Moody added a 43-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

NBA roundup: Jayson Tatum powers streaking Celtics past Pistons

Jayson Tatum poured in 43 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the visiting Boston Celtics extended their winning streak to six games by downing the Detroit Pistons 117-108 on Saturday night.

Grant Williams supplied 19 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Marcus Smart contributed 18 points, 10 assists and five steals. Bojan Bogdanovic led the Pistons with 28 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jaden Ivey tossed in 26 points, and Killian Hayes chipped in 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds in his first start this season.

Detroit was still clinging to a slim lead until Boston went on a 13-4 run in the last 4:03 of the third for an 89-81 advantage. Williams finished off that spurt with a 3-pointer. Tatum doubled his first-half point total to reach the 30-point mark. Tatum drained a jumper with 8:27 left to play to provide the first double-digit lead of the game at 98-87.

The Pistons played without Cade Cunningham (shin), while Boston was without Jaylen Brown (knee).

Mavericks 117, Blazers 112

Luka Doncic collected 42 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, and Spencer Dinwiddie made six 3-pointers to fuel host Dallas to a victory over Portland.

Doncic made 13 of 22 shots from the floor and 15 of 18 from the foul line as a means to atone for what he labeled as a pair of “awful” performances during Dallas’ two-game losing skid. Dinwiddie finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jerami Grant scored a season-high 37 points and Damian Lillard recorded 29 points and 12 assists for the Trail Blazers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt.

Dinwiddie drained a pair of 3-pointers to stake Dallas to a 109-106 lead with 1:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lillard answered with a layup before Dinwiddie converted again from beyond the arc. Dorian Finney-Smith added another 3-pointer to extend the Mavericks’ lead to 115-108 with 54.2 seconds left to seal the win.

Nets 110, Clippers 95

Seth Curry scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and hit the 3-pointer that gave surging Brooklyn the lead for good in a win over host Los Angeles.

Curry finished with 22 points off the bench for the Nets, who improved to 4-1 without Kyrie Irving. The guard was suspended by the team for at least five games on Nov. 3 after he tweeted a link to an anti-Semitic film and then refused to apologize for doing so. Kevin Durant scored a game-high 27 points while Nic Claxton (13 points, 14 rebounds) had a double-double for the Nets.

Ivica Zubac (16 points, 15 rebounds) recorded a double-double for the Clippers, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Paul George scored 17 points while Norman Powell (16 points) and John Wall (14 points) each got into double figures off the bench. Claxton hit a layup and Royce O’Neale sank a 3-pointer to extend Brooklyn’s lead to 104-88 with 2:22 left. Los Angeles got no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Wizards 121, Jazz 112

Kristaps Porzingis had 31 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Kuzma scored 23 points as host Washington defeated red-hot Utah.

Jordan Clarkson paced the Jazz with 18 points, but Utah’s defense couldn’t contain Washington from outside. The Wizards took a page from the Jazz, one of the NBA’s top 3-point-shooting teams, by draining 16 of 36 beyond the arc, including four apiece for Porzingis and Corey Kispert.

The Wizards took a 15-point lead in the third quarter and had answers every time Utah made a push in the final quarter. Kelly Olynyk hit a 3 as the Jazz pulled within 114-107, but the Wizards then scored five straight to clinch the win.

Pacers 118, Raptors 104

Buddy Hield’s 22 points led six players in double digits and Indiana rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat visiting Toronto in Indianapolis.

The Pacers fell behind 67-52 early into the third quarter before going on a 20-6 run. Despite Toronto briefly pushing its lead back to 10 points, Indiana remained within striking distance long enough into the fourth quarter to ultimately take control. The Pacers dominated the final period, 36-14, punctuated with a decisive 23-5 run to close the game.

Bennedict Mathurin finished with 15 points off the bench, and Myles Turner recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana. O.G. Anunoby led all scorers with 26 points, but his 2-of-7 shooting from 3-point range reflected an overall issue for Toronto in the loss. The Raptors shot just 7 of 35 from long range and finished worse than 40 percent from the floor overall (37-for-94).

76ers 121, Hawks 109

Joel Embiid scored a season-high 42 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Philadelphia withstood a second-half charge by visiting Atlanta.

Tyrese Maxey had 26 points and nine assists, Tobias Harris scored 21 points and Shake Milton had 11 for Philadelphia, which avenged a 104-95 loss to the Hawks on Thursday in Atlanta. Trae Young led the Hawks with 27 points and 11 assists, while Dejounte Murray scored 23 points, DeAndre Hunter had 15 and Clint Capela recorded 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Atlanta trailed by as many as 27 points midway through the third quarter before closing on a 22-10 run to cut the deficit to 99-84. The Hawks carried their momentum into the fourth quarter and pulled within 113-107 on AJ Griffin’s 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining, but Philadelphia quickly regained control with five straight points, including Matisse Thybulle’s trey with 1:39 left.

Heat 132, Hornets 115

Max Strus poured in 31 points and host Miami had far too much offensive firepower for Charlotte.

Bam Adebayo had 24 points, and Jimmy Butler and reserve Gabe Vincent both posted 20 points as the Heat won their second game in a row after a two-game skid.

The Hornets had good news with the season debut of standout guard LaMelo Ball, who had missed the first 13 games with an injury. Despite his 15 points, Charlotte dropped its eighth game in a row.

Pelicans 119, Rockets 106

Zion Williamson scored 26 points and host New Orleans scored the final 13 points of the game to defeat Houston.

Larry Nance Jr. added 22 points, Brandon Ingram scored 20 and Jose Alvarado had 12 for the Pelicans, who scored a season-low 95 points two nights earlier in a loss to Portland.

Jalen Green scored 33 points, Kevin Porter Jr. added 23 and Eric Gordon 15 for the Rockets, who lost for the eighth time in nine games. Alvarado and Porter were called for double technicals and ejected for an altercation in the final seconds.

NCAAF News: Nation’s leading rusher Chase Brown hurts leg, able to walk off field

Illinois running back Chase Brown, the nation’s leading rusher, left Saturday’s 31-24 loss to Purdue with what appeared to be a serious leg injury.

Illini coach Bret Bielema didn’t have an update in his postgame press conference.

Brown was tackled near the sideline with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and was seen writhing in pain out of bounds while grabbing at his leg. Trainers tended to him, and ESPN reported that his twin brother, Sydney, who plays safety for the Fighting Illinois, was in tears while taking a knee next to him.

Entering Saturday, Chase Brown had tallied 1,344 rushing yards on 257 carries. He picked up 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries against the Boilermakers, snapping a streak in which he had rushed for over 100 yards in 10 straight games.

Chase Brown didn’t put any pressure on his leg immediately following the injury but was seen walking off the field under his own power at the conclusion of the game.

Mavs edge Blazers behind Luka Doncic’s triple-double

Luka Doncic collected 42 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, and Spencer Dinwiddie made six 3-pointers to fuel the host Dallas Mavericks to a 117-112 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.

Doncic made 13 of 22 shots from the floor and 15 of 18 from the foul line as a means to atone for what he labeled as a pair of “awful” performances during Dallas’ two-game losing skid. The three-time All-Star’s “awful” performances consisted of 24 points, six rebounds and six assists in the Mavericks’ loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday and 22, nine and six, respectively, in a setback at Washington on Thursday.

Dinwiddie finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Christian Wood added 19 points in his return from a two-game absence due to a sprained knee. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 16 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who shot 50.6 percent from the floor to improve to 6-1 at home this season.

Jerami Grant scored a season-high 37 points and Damian Lillard recorded 29 points and 12 assists for the Trail Blazers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt in the finale of their six-game road trip.

Anfernee Simons converted an alley-oop layup to give Portland a 98-92 lead before Dallas scored the game’s next nine points. The Trail Blazers evened the score with three free throws before Lillard’s layup gave them the lead, however Doncic answered with a layup of his own.

Hardaway sank a pair of 3-pointers and Dinwiddie added one of his own to give Dallas a 49-33 lead with 7:55 remaining in the second quarter. The Trail Blazers responded with a 24-6 run to claim a two-point advantage before Doncic drained a pair of free throws and a jumper to give the Mavericks a 59-57 lead at halftime.

NCAAF News: West Virginia edges Oklahoma on last-second FG

Casey Legg’s tiebreaking 25-yard field goal on the final play gave West Virginia a 23-20 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.

In the Mountaineers’ first home win over the Sooners and first overall win against the Sooners since moving to the Big 12 in 2012, backup quarterback Garrett Greene ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 138 yards and another score.

The Mountaineers got the ball back with 6:24 remaining and the game tied, and deliberately moved the ball downfield with plenty of help from Greene.

Greene hit Bryce Ford-Wheaton on a fourth-down conversion pass to keep the drive alive, then West Virginia kept it on the ground.

Greene’s seven-yard run on third-and-6 from the Oklahoma 17 put the Mountaineers in position to run out the clock, and they did, with Legg kicking the field goal as time expired.

West Virginia scored the final 10 points, tying it early in the fourth quarter on Greene’s 11-yard touchdown run.

Eric Gray rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns for the Sooners, who outgained West Virginia 426-406.

Neither offense had much success until late in the first half.

The Sooners (5-5, 2-5 Big 12) got the ball back at their own 4 with just more than two minutes remaining, kicking off a wild finish to the first half.

Earlier in the half, Oklahoma receiver Marvin Mims dropped two key passes.

On this drive, though, he didn’t, as Dillon Gabriel’s 67-yard pass to Mims set up Eric Gray for a 12-yard touchdown run that put the Sooners ahead 10-0.

West Virginia (4-6, 2-5) returned the kick near midfield, then Greene, who had alternated with starter JT Daniels in the first half, led the way with a 33-yard run followed by a 5-yard touchdown run.

But the Mountaineers holder couldn’t handle the snap on the extra-point try. Legg picked it up but was hit hard from behind by Oklahoma’s Robert Spears-Jennings to jar the ball loose.

Billy Bowman scooped it up and returned it 88 yards for a defensive two-point conversion to give the Sooners a 12-6 lead at halftime.

Late in the third, Ford-Wheaton caught an 8-yard TD pass from Greene to put West Virginia ahead 13-12. But about two minutes later, Gray’s 5-yard TD run gave Oklahoma a 20-13 lead entering the fourth.

Pelicans silence Rockets at finish, win 119-106

Zion Williamson scored 26 points and the host New Orleans Pelicans scored the final 13 points of the game to defeat the Houston Rockets 119-106 on Saturday night.

Ingram broke a 106-all tie by making two free throws, and Alvarado and Ingram each made a 3-pointer to trigger the decisive run.

The Rockets scored the first five points of the third quarter to pull within eight points.

Williamson and Herbert Jones scored six points each as the Pelicans expanded the lead to 78-60.

Green scored 13 straight Houston points, including three 3-pointers, as the Rockets sprinted to an 87-86 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Houston started the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run before Alvarado’s 3-pointer produced the Pelicans’ first basket and trimmed the lead to 95-90.

Gordon answered with a three-point play, but Williamson’s driving basket gave New Orleans a 102-100 lead midway through the quarter.

Porter twice tied the score with baskets, but Houston didn’t score in the final 2:58.

The score was tied five times in the first six minutes before Nance broke the final tie by making a 3-pointer.

He added another 3-pointer and a layup and Devonte’ Graham did the same as the Pelicans built an 11-point lead.

Green finished the scoring with a 3-pointer that gave him 10 points in the period, which ended with New Orleans holding a 34-26 lead.

The Rockets scored the first four points of the second quarter, but six Pelicans scored four or more points each as the lead expanded to 18. Porter’s 3-pointer and a layup by Green left New Orleans with a 63-50 halftime lead.
