Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley power Cavs past Pelicans

Donovan Mitchell scored 30 points and Evan Mobley added 28 points, 13 rebounds and three steals to help the Cleveland Cavaliers notch an easy 118-107 victory over the host New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.

Jarrett Allen contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds as Cleveland won its fifth straight game and recorded its 26th double-digit victory of the campaign. Caris LeVert added 13 points, matched his season best of nine assists and grabbed six rebounds, while Darius Garland had 11 points and seven assists for the Cavaliers.

Brandon Ingram registered 25 points and eight assists, but the Pelicans had their three-game winning streak snapped. Trey Murphy III scored 17 points, CJ McCollum added 12 and Herbert Jones and Larry Nance Jr. tallied 11 apiece.

New Orleans star Zion Williamson (hamstring) missed his 20th consecutive game. Williamson will also miss the Pelicans’ final two games before the upcoming All-Star break.

Mitchell connected on 12 of 21 shots after missing one game with a groin injury. Garland (thumb) also returned after a one-game absence.

Cleveland shot 56.5 percent from the field, including 10 of 28 from 3-point range.

The Pelicans made 47.6 percent of their shots and were 9 of 24 from behind the arc while losing for the 16th time in their past 22 games.

New Orleans trailed by as many as 25 points late in the third quarter but used a 15-4 run to creep within 105-91 with 10:03 to play before Cleveland quickly responded to the charge.

LeVert buried a 3-pointer, Allen scored on the inside and Mitchell hit an outside shot to make it a 21-point margin with 7:54 remaining as the Cavaliers swept the regular-season series with the Pelicans.

Mitchell scored 14 points in the opening quarter as the Cavaliers scooted to a 38-28 lead.

Cleveland stretched its lead to 58-36 on two free throws by Mitchell with 6:44 left in the half. It was 73-56 at the break as Mitchell had 21 points, Mobley added 18 points and 10 rebounds and the Cavaliers shot 61.7 percent from the field.

Ingram had 13 in the half for New Orleans.

LeVert drained a 3-pointer to give the Cavaliers a 25-point lead with 1:25 left in the third quarter before New Orleans scored the last six points to trail 101-82 entering the final stanza.

Kyrie Irving scores 25 as Mavs roll over Kings

Despite the absence of Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks exploded for 45 points in the first quarter and remained unbeaten in the Kyrie Irving era with a 122-114 victory over the host Sacramento Kings on Friday night.

The Western Conference playoff contenders meet in a rematch Saturday night, also in the California capital.

Playing his second game for Dallas since a trade from Brooklyn last week, Irving paced the Mavericks with 25 points while also contributing to the balanced attack with a game-high 10 assists. It was just his fourth double-double of the season.

Seven Dallas players scored in double figures as the Mavericks won for the fifth time in six games.

In winning its third straight on the road, Dallas led just 19-17 nearly seven minutes into the game before putting up another 26 points over the final five minutes of the period to go up 45-25.

Christian Wood had 13 consecutive Mavericks points during the 26-8 flurry, which featured five 3-pointers, including a pair by Wood.

The Kings never led and trailed by as many as 24, but they inched progressively closer, getting within 104-94 on a De’Aaron Fox interior hoop with 7:42 to go and 114-106 with 1:34 left on another Fox hoop.

However, Irving capped his night with six clinching free throws, allowing the Mavericks, playing their fourth consecutive game without Doncic (heel), to beat the Kings in their first of three meetings this season.

Josh Green backed Irving with 17 points for the Mavericks, while Tim Hardaway Jr. had 15, Wood and Reggie Bullock had 13 apiece, Jaden Hardy added 12 and JaVale McGee contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

Shortly after finding out he’d been added to the All-Star team, Fox had 33 points to lead all scorers. However, he shot just 1-for-5 from 3-point range as the Kings were outscored 54-27 by the guests from beyond the arc.

Domantas Sabonis put up 18 points, 11 rebounds and a team-high seven assists for the Kings, who had won their previous two games. Keegan Murray went for 16 points and Kevin Huerter 15.

Super Bowl LVII is around the corner and everyone knows that this largest event in the world is not only about the game of football but is also about the music at half time and the advertisements that are among the best in the year. Since you might be aware of the date which is Sunday February 12 and teams: Philadelphia Eagles vs Kansas City Chiefs facing off at the final at State Farm Stadium, in Glendale, Arizona here are some details about the music which includes a halftime performance by celebrity singer Rihanna.

Here’s a list of the performers at the Super Bowl 57

America the Beautiful will be sung by celebrity R&B Singer Babyface while Lift Every Voice and Sing will be sung by celebrity star Sheryl Lee Ralph of Abbott Elementary fame.

It is difficult to predict what Rihanna will sing in the halftime production that would last between 12 to 15 minutes as she has a large body of work that includes 14 songs that hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and 32 songs that were in the top 10 spots of the chart.

The Barbadian singer has been releasing hits from the past 17 years. So, she might have a tough choice as she would have a soft spot for all the songs she sang! We might see an Umbrella performance which was an eight times platinum splash. She had released the popular track in 2007 and the featured artist was Jay-Z.

Another probable choice would be the song We Found Love. Celebrity Rihanna and mega DJ/producer Calvin Harris’ 2011 song remained at No.1 for ten weeks on Billboard Hot 100 and could be a good choice.

PGA News: No. 2 Scottie Scheffler leads No. 1 Jon Rahm in Phoenix

0

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler carded the best round of the week, a 7-under-par 64, to take a two-shot lead at the WM Phoenix Open on Friday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Play was suspended at 6:07 p.m. local time with about half of the field yet to complete the second round, which will be concluded Saturday morning ahead of the third round.

Scheffler has a 10-under 132 total through two complete rounds at TPC Scottsdale. Spain’s Jon Rahm, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, shot a 66 on Friday and is two strokes behind Scheffler, who is rated No. 2.

Canada’s Adam Hadwin is also at 8 under, though he still has seven holes to play in the second round.

Wyndham Clark logged a 67 on Friday, leaving him at 7 under, tied with South Korea’s Sungjae Im, who 6 under in the second round with six holes remaining.

Australia’s Jason Day is in the clubhouse at 6 under after a 71. He is tied for sixth with Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas (6 under in the second round through 14 holes), Sam Ryder (4 under through 13 holes), Xander Schauffele (2 under through 12 holes) and Canada’s Nick Taylor (1 under through 12 holes).

Scheffler is poised to become the first defending Phoenix champ to lead or co-lead after the second round the following year since Johnny Miller in 1975.

Scheffler’s bogey-free round included three birdies on the back nine, which he played first, and four on the front nine.

“I think around this place when you’re hitting fairways and you’re hitting it well, the golf course can kind of open up for you,” Scheffler said. “But the opposite can happen in a hurry because there’s trouble lurking on basically every hole with there being desert close by. There’s a lot of holes with water as well.

“When you’re hitting it well, you have to take advantage of it like I did today. Hopefully, I’ll keep putting the ball in position as the week goes on.”

Rahm started the day by making his only bogey of the round on his second hole, the par-4 11th. He quickly recovered by going birdie-par-eagle-birdie from No. 13 to No. 16, then added consecutive birdies at Nos. 2 and 3.

“I’m making a lot of good swings out there and I’m going to remember that,” Rahm said. “Where they end up is to most of the extent out of my control.”

WTA News: WTA roundup: Qinwen Zheng knocks out top seed in Abu Dhabi

0

Qinwen Zheng of China dominated No. 1 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open on Friday in the United Arab Emirates.

Zheng hit four aces without a double fault, won 25 of 31 first-service points (80.6 percent) and saved all four break points she faced.

That leaves No. 2 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland as the highest remaining seed after she bested American Shelby Rogers 7-6 (5), 6-2. Bencic will face Brazilian sixth seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who rallied past Kazakh third seed Elena Rybakina 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and four minutes.

Rybakina racked up 19 aces but Haddad Maia broke her save three times in five opportunities while saving four of five break points herself.

Zheng will face Russian eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in the semifinals. Samsonova beat countrywoman and No. 4 seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 6-3.

Upper Austria Ladies Linz

No. 1 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece staved off a tough challenge in the second-set tiebreaker to oust fifth seed Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-3, 7-6 (8) in the quarterfinals in Linz, Austria.

Vekic moved ahead 6-3 in the tiebreaker before Sakkari saved three straight set points and tied it 6-6. Vekic went up 7-6 and 8-7 but Sakkari answered each time. The Greek, who had five aces, then won two more points to put the match to bed.

Sakkari will face another Croatian foe in the semifinal after No. 6 seed Petra Martic defeated Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-4, 7-5.

No. 8 seed Anastasia Potapova of Russia rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam. In the semis, she’ll draw Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, who advanced after quarterfinal opponent Dalma Galfi of Hungary retired down 4-1 in their first set.

PGA News: Tiger Woods commits to next week’s Genesis Invitational

0

Tiger Woods announced Friday that he will return to PGA Tour action during next week’s Genesis Invitational at the legendary Rivera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Woods, 47, played in just three tournaments last season, all majors, as his recovery from a serious leg injury continued.

He sustained the injury two years ago when he was involved in a single-car accident in the Los Angeles area the day after the 2021 Genesis Invitational was completed. The 15-time major champion is host of the annual event through his charity foundation.

Woods made the announcement of his participation next week on Twitter during Friday’s second round of the always-boisterous WM Phoenix Open at Scottsdale, Ariz.

“I’m ready to play an ACTUAL PGA Tour event next week @thegenesisinv,” Woods wrote on Twitter.

It will be the first tournament for Woods since The Open Championship in July when he failed to make the cut. He also played in last season’s Masters Tournament, finishing in 47th place at 13 over par, and was in the field at the PGA Championship in May but withdrew after three rounds.

Woods did partner with Rory McIlroy in a made-for-television match play event in December, losing to the team of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. He also played with his son, Charlie, that same month at the PNC Championship.

Woods intended to play in the Hero World Challenge from December 1-4 in The Bahamas, but withdrew because of plantar fasciitis. His foundation is the host of that event as well.

“I don’t have much left in this leg, so gear up for the biggest ones and hopefully, you know, lightning catches in a bottle and I’m up there in contention with a chance to win and hopefully I remember how to do that,” Woods said in December. “But again, giving myself a chance to get out there again.”

Woods’ last event on the PGA Tour was the ZOZO Championship in October of 2020.

ATP News: ATP roundup: Three U.S. players reach Dallas semis

0

Sixth-seeded J.J. Wolf upset second-seeded Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an all-U.S. quarterfinal match at the Dallas Open on Friday.

In another all-American matchup, top-seeded Taylor Fritz got past seventh-seeded Marcos Giron 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3.

Wolf’s semifinal foe will be fifth-seeded John Isner of the United States, who downed Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez 7-6 (8), 7-5. Fritz will square off with either China’s Yibing Wu or eighth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France in the other semifinal.

Wolf won 82 percent of his first-serve points and saved 82 percent (9 of 11) of Tiafoe’s break-point opportunities. He is through to the semifinals of an event for the first time since finishing as runner-up in Florence, Italy, in October. That was his first appearance in an ATP Tour final.

Cordoba Open

Reigning champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain advanced to the semifinals for the third year in a row at Cordoba, Argentina, beating Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

Ramos-Vinolas, who is seeded third, broke serve three times in the final set to pull away for the win.

Sixth-seeded Federico Coria of Argentina will oppose Ramos-Vinolas next after advancing when second-seeded Argentine Francisco Cerundolo was forced to retire from their quarterfinal due to a leg injury. Coria led 6-3, 3-0, when Cerundolo stopped the match.

Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien rallied past Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-0. Dellien’s semifinal foe will be fourth-seeded Argentine Sebastian Baez, who eliminated Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Open Sud de France

Unseeded U.S. player Maxime Cressy beat third-seeded Borna Coric of Croatia 7-6 (2), 6-4, to advance to the semifinals in Montpellier, France.

Cressy produced an 18-6 advantage in aces, though that number was offset somewhat by his 8-1 edge in double faults.

Next up for Cressy is the tournament’s top seed, Holger Rune of Denmark. Rune slipped past France’s Gregoire Barrere 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5).

The other semifinal will feature second-seeded Jannik Sinner, who beat Italian countryman Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-2, and 18-year-old wild-card entrant Arthur Fils, who won an all-French matchup with Quentin Halys 7-6 (3), 6-3.

CHAMP News: Stephen Ames holds on to 3-shot lead in Morocco

Stephen Ames fired a 3-under par 70 to maintain his spot at the top of the leaderboard following the second round of the Trophy Hassan II on Friday in Rabat, Morocco.

Australia’s Mark Hensby (67) and England’s Paul Broadhurst (70) were three strokes back at 6 under.

His round followed an opening-day 67 to stand at 9 under in the 54-hole tournament. In Round 2, he bogeyed No. 2, then birdied four of the next 10 holes. He dropped a stroke at No. 14 but regained it with a birdie at No. 17.

Despite the bogey at the par-3 14th hole, Ames generally was encouraged by his day at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

“Keeping it — I guess try to keep it out of the trouble, hitting the ball in the right spots where I need to, taking the two-putts when I can, and then
sometimes when the numbers are correct, I hit a good tee shot, a good second shot or tee shot in there and I make birdie,” the 58-year-old Canadian said, reviewing his first two rounds. “My only hiccup today was the par 3. I three-putted, but other than that, I was very happy with my day. It was a very long and tedious day, five hours and 10 minutes, so that was basically more of a game of patience than anything else today.”

He has one victory on the Champions Tour after holding at least a share of the lead after the second round, winning at the 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Classic.

He led after Rounds 1 and 2 at the 2020 Morocco Champions event in Marrakesh but finished in second place.

Five shots back at 4 under and in fourth place are Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (73) and defending champion Brett Quigley (70). Jeff Sluman shot a 73 and is alone in sixth place at 3 under, followed by the group of Paul Stankowski (70), Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie (74) and Paul Lawrie (75) tied for seventh place at 1 under.

Those are the only players under par on the par 73, 7,166-yard course, which players said has been tough to navigate.

Hensby said he wasn’t sure just what to credit for his 67, which was the low round on Friday. He mixed an eagle on the par-4 No. 17 with five birdies and a bogey.

“I don’t know, I just obviously got a good run going towards the end,” he said. “I hit a really good shot on 17 and made the putt; I think I made a really good putt on 15. So it’s a grind. Every hole you’ve got to really hit it in the right spots and you never know what’s going to happen out there, that’s for sure.”

Hensby, 51, is seeking his first Champions Tour win in 11 starts.

Washington St., Washington look to fix woes in rivalry clash

Washington State and Washington hope having the past week off gave them time to fix their problems so they can build some much-needed momentum when they meet on Saturday in Pullman, Wash.

The Cougars (10-15, 5-9 Pac-12) have dropped five of their past six games after a 76-52 setback at then-No. 9 UCLA on Feb. 4.

The Huskies (13-12, 5-9) are coming off an 80-74 loss at Southern California on Feb. 4, Washington’s third straight loss and fourth in the past five games.

Looking ahead to the rivalry game, Washington coach Mike Hopkins said, “Obviously, I know what it means to our university, and to the people in this state — it’s an awesome game.

“We haven’t stopped believing. There’s six games left — last year, we ended up very strong, and that’s what we’re trying to do right now.”

Washington State fell apart down the stretch against the Bruins. After the Cougars pulled to within 46-38 on TJ Bamba’s two free throws with 14:01 to play, UCLA put the game away with a 13-0 run to take a 21-point lead with a little more than nine minutes left.

The Cougars were suffocated by the Bruins, who forced Washington State to shoot 17 of 55 from the field (30.9 percent), including 9 of 27 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.

UCLA scored 19 points off Washington State’s 15 turnovers, while the Cougars mustered just seven points off the Bruins’ 10 miscues.

Bamba, who averages a team-best 14.4 points per game, had 19 points to go along with five rebounds against the Bruins. However, Justin Powell was the only other Cougar who finished in double figures, scoring 17 points — well above his scoring average of 10.9 points per game. Mouhamed Gueye, who averages 13.7 points per game, shot just 3 of 13 and wound up with six points.

Powell has averaged 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds and shot 15 of 27 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc in the past four games.

“All the way around, I think his confidence is growing,” Washington State coach Kyle Smith said of Powell. “We need to keep him on the floor. He’s one of our big plus/minus guys. It doesn’t go well when he’s not out there.”

Washington collapsed in the final minutes against the Trojans.

After freshman Keyon Menifield hit back- to-back 3-pointers to give the Huskies a 60-58 lead with 4:11 left, USC responded with a decisive, 14-2 run over a span of three minutes to secure the win.

Keion Brooks Jr. — the Pac-12’s second-leading scorer at 18.3 points per game — had a team-high 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Menifield added 21 points against the Trojans.

The Huskies should be bolstered with the return of Cole Bajema — the team’s second leading scorer (9.9 ppg) — who was suspended by the Pac-12 for Washington’s game against USC for hitting a UCLA player in the groin area on Feb. 2.
