NFL News: Rams QB Matthew Stafford ‘making progress’ but questionable

Head coach Sean McVay said the Rams will go up to 90 minutes before kickoff, if necessary, to determine whether quarterback Matthew Stafford plays Sunday.

Stafford is “going through that protocol” for a concussion and was limited at practice Thursday and Friday.

“Realistically, he’s listed as questionable. So he’s making good progress and that’s where we’re at with that,” McVay said.

No matter who starts for the Rams, McVay said the team would be starting its ninth different offensive line combination in Week 10.

“It has been out of the norm relative to how our guys have typically protected the quarterback. It’s been challenging without a doubt,” he said.

Earlier in the week, the medical staff noted something wasn’t quite right with Stafford after last week’s 16-13 loss at Tampa.

“You obviously have the medical expertise where if they cleared him, but the family and people aren’t comfortable … with based on the information and how he’s feeling, he’s not going to be playing,” McVay said. “The main thing is, you just want to leave the door open if there’s that opportunity to play (a game) with our franchise quarterback who’s an absolute stud.”

Stafford played the entire game against the Buccaneers, going 13 of 27 for 165 yards and a touchdown.

John Wolford is the primary backup to Stafford on the depth chart. Bryce Perkins is also on the 53-man roster. Wolford has appeared in four games over three seasons for the Rams, going 1-0 as a starter. He’s thrown 42 career regular-season passes in the NFL and started a 2020 playoff game before departing early with a head injury.

Stafford has thrown for 1,928 yards and eight touchdowns against eight interceptions this season. He has been sacked 28 times, third most in the NFL, as the team has been forced to alter the look of the offensive line.

The Rams (3-5) host division rival Arizona (3-6) this Sunday.

Kawhi Leonard (knee) participates in 5-on-5 workout

Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard took part in a 5-on-5 workout on Friday, his most significant action since being shut down last month with stiffness in his surgically repaired right knee.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said there still isn’t a timetable for Leonard’s return. He hasn’t played since Oct. 23 against the Phoenix Suns.

“He played 5-on 5 with some of our guys, some of the players and some of the coaches,” Lue said of the 5-on-5 session. “The first time he was able to get on the floor and play 5-on-5 and he looked pretty good. Still have a ways to go, but that was the first sign of positivity of him getting on the floor, playing 5-on-5.”

Leonard, a five-time All-Star, will miss his 10th consecutive game Saturday when the Clippers host the Brooklyn Nets.

Leonard sustained a torn ACL in his right knee in June of 2021 and missed the entire 2021-22 season. He played 21 minutes off the bench in each of his two performances this season, then reported stiffness to the Clippers at shootaround in Oklahoma City on Oct. 25.

Leonard, 31, averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two games.

“It’s gonna take a few more (workout) opportunities to get that in,” Lue said. “Then kind of reassess him to see how he’s feeling after we go to medical and just kind of see if we check all the boxes.”

NFL News: Packers CB Eric Stokes likely done for season; LB De’Vondre Campbell out Sunday

Packers cornerback Eric Stokes is unlikely to suit up again this season, Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur said Friday.

Stokes was on crutches in the locker room following the loss to the Detroit Lions last week. He was carted off the field in the same game in which the Packers also lost linebacker Rashan Gary for the season to a torn ACL.

Stokes is dealing with ankle and knee injuries. LaFleur would not divulge details or the severity of either injury.

“It’s looking unlikely, but I don’t have an exact update for that,” LaFleur said.

Stokes’ absence likely pushes Rasul Douglas into a starting role at cornerback with Jaire Alexander.

In addition to Stokes and Gary, the Packers all but ruled out a third defensive starter for Week 10 on Friday: linebacker De’Vondre Campbell is “highly unlikely” to be on the field at Lambeau when the Dallas Cowboys visit this weekend.

“We were hopeful that he would be available this week. It’s looking highly unlikely,” LaFleur said of Campbell. “He’s not where we need him to be, I guess.”

Hornets try to reset for rematch with Heat

The encore could be a pretty good one between the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat.

The teams will meet Saturday for the second time in three nights on the same court at Miami.

The Hornets have lost seven games in a row, with Thursday night’s 117-112 overtime outcome among the most difficult to digest.

“We get a couple breaks, things go our way a little bit differently in overtime, it would have been a really good win” coach Steve Clifford said. “But it says everything about the character of our team.”

Charlotte battled back from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit, but the Heat recovered as Jimmy Butler racked up 35 points, including their last seven in regulation. Miami has won five games this season, with four of them ending with margins of seven points or less.

“I think this was important to us,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “You have to go through the emotions and then go figure it out. Then have to mentally reset and emotionally reset to play five more minutes. I felt like it was an important win for us mentally and emotionally.”

Butler was aggressive enough to land at the free-throw line for 15 attempts, making 13.

After the Heat’s lead disappeared, Miami was forced to execute while facing a deficit. Butler had help, and it proved to be vital.

“That is how we are built,” Spoelstra said. “I think we’re starting to understand what our identity needs to be at both ends of the court. … The best way to do it is to build on these games and then you have something to review on film and have something to start to work on.”

Spoelstra said traits of Clifford-coached teams mean there are bound to be close games and certain challenges. This comes even with the Hornets playing minus key players because of injuries.

“We’ve experienced these games over the years,” Spoelstra said. “They’re going to find a way to grind back in it.”

The Hornets, in the middle game of a three-game swing in Florida, haven’t been clicking down the stretch in many games. So outscoring the Heat 31-19 in the fourth quarter might be a huge step despite the ultimate defeat.

“That’s something we can build on,” Clifford said. “I think this says everything about our team.”

Yet turnovers were devastating for the Hornets. Miami feasts on defensive opportunities and Charlotte’s adjustments are expected as the teams meet again in quick order.

“They’ve been doing it all year,” Clifford said of the Heat’s takeaways. “They’re quick, very aggressive with their hands. They’re good in the passing lanes. It’s something we’ll have to do better with on Saturday.”

“It’s part of our identity that we really want to be disruptive and get teams out of their comfort zone. It requires a big energy and a focused commitment to be active and get hands on balls. That’s our lifeblood defensively.”

It could be just the launching point for what the Heat can do on defense.

“We’re nowhere near where we want to be or where we’ll end up defensively,” Spoelstra said. “We’re starting to get there.”

With all the backcourt injuries for the Hornets, Kelly Oubre Jr. has continued to be productive in a heightened role. His 29 points and seven 3-point baskets were season highs Thursday night.

NFL News: Cardinals QB Kyler Murray game-time decision vs. Rams

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will be a game-time decision for this weekend’s clash against the host Los Angeles Rams, coach Kliff Kingsbury announced Friday.

Murray, who is nursing a hamstring injury, was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday’s walk-through and limited in Thursday’s practice.

Journeyman Colt McCoy or Trace McSorley would be in line to start if Murray is unable to play for the Cardinals (3-6).

Murray, 25, has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,168 yards, with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He’s also rushed for 359 yards and two scores.

Hot Hawks chase sweep of two-game set with Sixers

The Atlanta Hawks aim for a two-game sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers when the teams meet in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Hawks led by as many as 20 points in a 104-95 victory over the Sixers on Thursday in Atlanta. Hawks star Trae Young scored 26 points, while center Clint Capela added 18 points with a season-high 20 rebounds.

“Our approach was like a playoff series,” Atlanta coach Nate McMillan said. “We wanted to get the first one. Now we’re greedy and want to get the second one.”

While Atlanta is off to its best start (8-4) since the 2016-17 season, Philadelphia sits near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 5-7 record.

The underachieving Sixers were hoping to build on Monday’s encouraging 100-88 win over the Phoenix Suns, but instead turned in a dismal effort versus Atlanta.

Philadelphia shot 38.6 percent from the field in the loss, including 6 of 30 (20 percent) from 3-point range.

The Sixers have struggled to find a rhythm without star James Harden, who missed the last three games and will be out for approximately one month with a right foot tendon strain.

One bright spot for Philadelphia against the Hawks was center Joel Embiid, who had 26 points and 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double after missing three games with the flu.

The Sixers had 17 turnovers and 15 assists against Atlanta, and coach Doc Rivers said his team needs more from point guard Tyrese Maxey.

“The lack of point guard play I thought was really clear tonight,” said Rivers. “We’re going to have to make an adjustment there.”

De’Anthony Melton could see additional time at the point, but he had three turnovers and one assist in 28 minutes against Atlanta and is shooting 25 percent over his last three games.

Maxey opened the season on a hot streak, shooting 51.6 percent from the field, including 46.8 percent from beyond the arc, in the team’s first nine games.

The third-year pro has faltered in the last three games without Harden, however, shooting 19 of 64 (29.7 percent) from the field. He scored 15 points on 5-for-17 shooting against Atlanta.

Embiid said Maxey might be overthinking in the wake of Harden’s injury.

“I told him, ‘Yeah, without James, we need you to be a point guard,” Embiid said. “But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be looking for your shot. He has to be aggressive for us to win. He has to be putting the ball up and he has to take shots. Right now, I think he’s thinking too much.”

The Sixers will need an improved effort overall to keep pace with Atlanta, which has scored at least 100 points in each of its first 12 games.

Capela is averaging 13.4 points, 16.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks over his last five games while shooting 54.7 percent from the field.

“This is the Clint that we saw two years ago,” McMillan said. “This is the Clint that we need out on the floor — rebounding the basketball, defending. He’s done a really solid job in the last couple of days defending some of the top players in the league.”

NFL News: Steelers’ T.J. Watt to play Sunday against Saints

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt said he will play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints after missing seven games with a torn pectoral muscle.

The team opened the 21-day practice window on Watt on Oct. 26, designating him for return from injured reserve. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Watt told reporters he didn’t expect to be on a snap count for the Steelers (2-6).

“I am very excited,” Watt told reporters. “It’s just been a long time coming. Just feel very, very good about the week that I had and excited to play.”

Watt, 28, initially was expected to miss six weeks with the pectoral injury he suffered in the season opener, but he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this month, delaying his return.

He opted to rehab the pec injury rather than have a surgical procedure that carried a recovery time of around 10-12 weeks.

“It’s huge,” Watt said of getting back on the field. “To finally have a helmet back on and be out there in the field and just to feel the emotions and feel alive again in the stadium.

“It’s huge to be able to tap a guy in the head after he makes a good play, get guys celebrating, bring some juice, bring some spark, some energy. (It’s) all that I can ask for when it’s time to play football, and I’m excited about it.”

Watt had a sack and interception in the season-opening win but did not finish the game. Last season, the three-time All-Pro tied Michael Strahan (2001) for the most sacks (22.5) in a season since the stat became official in 1982.

Bulls C Nikola Vucevic fined $15K by league

Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic was fined $15,000 on Friday for making an obscene gesture on the court.

The incident occurred with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter of Wednesday’s home game against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Bulls lost 115-111.

Vucevic, 32, is in his 12th NBA season and third with the Bulls. He is averaging 16.5 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 13 games (all starts). His rebound average is third in the NBA this season.

NFL News: Chargers waive former first-round pick Jerry Tillery

The Los Angeles Chargers waived defensive lineman Jerry Tillery, a former first-round pick.

“Jerry has been a valued member of our organization since arriving in 2019, and I want to thank him for all his contributions to the Chargers,” general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement on Thursday. “This was not an easy decision but, after careful consideration, it was a necessary one that is in the best interest of both team and player. We wish Jerry all the best moving forward in his career.”

A Notre Dame product, Tillery was the No. 28 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In May, the Chargers declined his fifth-year option, which would have paid him a guaranteed $10.753 million in 2023.

Tillery, 26, set career highs with 51 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 16 games (15 starts) last season. This season, he has appeared in seven games and has recorded eight tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

In three-plus seasons with the Chargers, Tillery appeared in 54 games (29 starts), posting 106 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 33 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

MLB News: Shoulder surgery wipes out Dodgers RHP Blake Treinen for 2023 season

Reliever Blake Treinen finally opted for shoulder surgery after being limited to five regular-season innings pitched in 2022, and he will not take the field for the Los Angeles Dodgers until 2024.

A torn capsule in his right shoulder was diagnosed, but the 34-year-old right-hander went against surgeon’s recommendations and attempted a treatment regimen that included platelet-rich plasma injections.

The Dodgers guaranteed his $8 million salary for 2023 in a contract extension in May.

Treinen was activated by the Dodgers in September and pitched last month in the National League Division Series, making one appearance against the San Diego Padres. He gave up one run in one inning pitched.

An All-Star out of the Oakland A’s bullpen in 2018, Treinen joined the Dodgers after the 2019 season. He made a total of 99 appearances in 2020 and 2021 with a 2.45 ERA.
