WTA News: U.S. Open: Coco Gauff popular pick to thwart Iga Swiatek’s defense

0

Iga Swiatek counts the 2022 U.S. Open among her four career Grand Slam titles, and the 22-year-old Polish star is favored to claim No. 5 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Swiatek, who opened her title defense with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over unseeded Rebecca Peterson on Monday, began the tournament as the +223 favorite by BetMGM to win the women’s title. She has been backed by the most total bets (28.9 percent) and money (45.7 percent) in the draw.

However, Swiatek’s half of the draw does include a number of potential stumbling blocks.

Those include No. 4 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion and No. 6 Coco Gauff, who has won two tournaments in the past month — including taking out Swiatek on her way to the Western & Southern Open title.

Gauff has the third-lowest odds at the book, and is second with 21.9 percent of the total bets and 17.1 percent of the money backing the young American to claim her first Grand Slam title.

Gauff will begin her tournament against unseeded German Laura Siegemund and the first seeded player she could potentially face is No. 32 Elise Mertens in the third round.

If Gauff advances beyond the third round, where big-hitting fellow American Danielle Collins could also await, that half of the draw also includes former Grand Slam champions No. 11 Petra Kvitova, No. 18 Victoria Azarenka, No. 20 Jelena Ostapenko and unseeded Caroline Wozniacki. One potential stumbling block, No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari, was upset in the first round Monday, while No. 10 Karolina Muchova cruised into the second round.

Second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka will begin her tournament against unseeded Maryna Zanevska. With the second-shortest odds to win the women’s title at +400, Sabalenka has been backed by 9.5 percent of the tickets and 8.0 percent of the money.

The 25-year-old from Belarus claimed her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year but was bounced in the semifinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon. She also lost in the semis of the U.S. Open each of the past two years.

Sabalenka’s half of the draw would appear to be a little less daunting on paper.

No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula has been backed by 4.9 percent of both the total bets and money at BetMGM, but the American has yet to advance past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event. Fifth-seeded Ons Jabeur has made history by becoming the first Muslim player to reach a Grand Slam final, but she lost to Swiatek in last year’s U.S. Open final and has lost in the Wimbledon finals each of the past two years.

Other notable names in Sabalenka’s half of the draw include No. 7 Caroline Garcia, Wimbledon champion and No. 9 seed Marketa Vondrousova, No. 17 seed Madison Keys and No. 28 seed Elina Svitolina, the former No. 3 player in the world who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon last month.

ATP News: Roberto Carballes Baena stuns Holger Rune at U.S. Open

0

Roberto Carballes Baena had seven aces while delivering a huge upset of fourth-seeded Holger Rune 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Monday in the opening round of the U.S. Open at New York.

It marks the first time the 30-year-old Carballes Baena has beaten a Top 10 player in 14 career attempts.

Baena converted 7 of 14 break points and committed just 21 unforced errors to Rune’s 43. The Spaniard also converted 75.9 percent of his first-serve points.

Rune had a 37-31 edge in winners but said he wasn’t at his best. The Denmark native took a timeout during the third set to get treatment for a leg injury and is still bothered by a back ailment sustained earlier this month.

“Disappointing day today,” Rune said. “I had, as you know, a setback after the tournaments in Toronto and (Cincinnati), where I had to retire. Not the best preparation I had.

“Not satisfied with the result, obviously, but also with my tennis. There is only one way, and it’s to work.”

While crediting Carballes Baena, Rune also pointed to the physical issues as the reason for the defeat.

“I think also one of the reasons, you know, it’s not ideal that I didn’t get more matches coming into this tournament, because the body, it’s hard if you’re not in the rhythm for the body,” Rune said.

Carballes Baena, who has reached the second round in four straight U.S. Opens, will next play Aslan Karatsev of Russia in the second round. Karatsev was a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic.

Fifth-seeded Casper Ruud, a finalist in last year’s U.S. Open, began his tournament with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over qualifier Emilio Nava. It was Ruud’s 200th tour-level victory.

Ruud made just 21 unforced errors while Nava had 49. The American had 72 winners — including 13 aces — while Ruud had 27 and four, respectively.

Ninth-seeded Taylor Fritz rolled to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Steve Johnson in a clash of Americans. No. 10 Frances Tiafoe advanced with a 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Learned Tien.

Former U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem swept past No. 25 Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Thiem was helped by Bublik’s 17 double faults.

The 2020 U.S. Open champ has been bothered by injuries over the past two-plus years. It was the Austrian’s first Grand Slam victory since the 2021 Australian Open. He had failed to win a single match in his last six Grand Slam appearances.

“It’s a pretty special victory because it’s the first since two-and-a-half years on Grand Slams,” Thiem said. “Especially here at the U.S. Open with all the past and all the memories I have here.”

No. 21 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina knocked off Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, while No. 22 Adrian Mannarino of France registered a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki.

No. 32 Laslo Djere of Serbia was a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 over Brandon Nakashima.

Ben Shelton recorded a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Argentina’s Pedro Cachin. But fellow American J.J. Wolf went down as China’s Zhizhen Zhang outlasted him 7-5, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 4-6 and 6-3.

Other winners included Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, Austria’s Sebastian Ofner, Czech Jakub Mensik and Australia’s Rinky Hijikata.

ATP News: 2023 U.S. Open: Novak Djokovic slight title favorite over Carlos Alcaraz

0

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have forged a new rivalry at the top of men’s tennis, and they could be headed for a third epic showdown this summer.

Entering the U.S. Open, Djokovic is coming off a dramatic win over Alcaraz at the Western & Southern Open earlier this month. That provided a measure of payback after the young Spaniard dethroned the all-time Grand Slam king in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon last month.

Alcaraz holds the No. 1 ranking entering the final Grand Slam of the year, and he’s the defending champion in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. However, it’s Djokovic who is the slight favorite to win the men’s title at +175 ahead of Alcaraz at +170 at BetMGM.

The Serbian, who is attempting to add on to his record 23 Grand Slam titles, leads the book with 35.2 percent of the total bets and 48.9 percent of the money wagered on the men’s champion backing him to win. Alcaraz is close behind with 27.9 percent of the tickets but has drawn just 19.4 percent of the money.

No other player has shorter than third-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev’s +1000 odds, which has drawn modest public support with 5.8 and 5.5 percent of the action, respectively. No. 6 Jannik Sinner of Italy has been the third most popular player, having been backed by 8.35 percent of the bets and 5.8 percent of the money at +1400.

The odds are similar at DraftKings, where Djokovic is the +120 favorite, followed by Alcaraz (+190), Medvedev (+1100) and Sinner (+1400).

Djokovic will begin his quest for a 24th Grand Slam title against unseeded Alexandre Muller at 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday, while Alcaraz kicks off his title defense against unseeded Dominik Koepfer at the same time on Tuesday.

Alcaraz, 20, is attempting to become the first player to successfully defend a U.S. Open title since Roger Federer in 2008. His half of the draw includes Medvedev, Sinner and No. 8 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia.

“I feel that I’m more mature on court. I feel that I’m a better player than I was a year ago,” Alcaraz said in his pre-tournament press conference. “I got my first Grand Slam last year, but I feel like I’m more mature and I’m better.”

Djokovic, 36, faces a draw that includes Denmark’s Holger Rune, the No. 4 seed, and No. 5 Casper Ruud of Norway, along with No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and the American trio of No. 9 Taylor Fritz, No. 10 Francis Tiafoe and No. 14 Tommy Paul.

After taking the first two Grand Slam titles of the year, Djokovic’s record in majors this year is 20-1 — with the lone blemish being the instant classic against Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

“Grand Slams are the biggest goals that I have in my career at the moment,” he said. “I always speak about that, that I aim to peak and perform my best in Grand Slams. I don’t know how many more Slams I’ll have. … I see every Grand Slam that I play right now as really a golden opportunity to make more history.

“Of course, there’s a big significance to that.”

MLS News: Real Salt Lake out to avenge U.S. Open Cup loss to Dynamo

0

Three days after losing to the Houston Dynamo in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, Real Salt Lake will get a shot at exacting revenge when it hosts Houston in Sandy, Utah, on Saturday night.

The clubs stepped outside of MLS play on Wednesday night for a 120-minute match that ended with a 3-1 loss for Salt Lake. Anderson Julio’s second-half equalizer forced an extra 30 minutes but Houston prevailed behind late goals from Adalberto Carrasquilla and Luis Caicedo.

RSL are unbeaten in their last 11 league matches against the Dynamo, with five wins and six draws.

“We knew it was gonna be a tough match,” Salt Lake coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “I’m really proud of the way the guys fought to get back in the game, but I think on the night we just weren’t good enough with the ball. Credit to Houston, they’re a very good team at home.”

Tempers flared toward the end of the match. Brayan Vera was shown a red card in the 119th minute after grabbing Amine Bassi by the neck and punching him. Vera also retaliated against other Houston players who came to Bassi’s defense before being sent off.

Vera’s absence left Salt Lake with only 10 players over the final few minutes of extra time.

“Hopefully it settles down in the next two days,” Houston coach Ben Olsen said. “I think it’s an emotional game and there’s a lot at stake. The fact it got heated didn’t surprise me.”

Houston (9-10-5, 32 points) is seeking its third consecutive shutout in MLS play. The Dynamo have recorded back-to-back clean sheets, winning 5-0 over the Portland Timbers last Sunday and posting a scoreless draw at the Colorado Rapids before the long break for the Leagues Cup.

Keeping RSL’s offense in check won’t be an easy task. Salt Lake (10-7-7, 37 points) has averaged 2.1 goals and 6.6 shots on goal over its last 10 matches. The Utah club has stretched its unbeaten streak to nine, going 6-0-3 since its last defeat on May 31.

Salt Lake’s offensive productivity may take a hit with the absence of Pablo Ruiz, who has a team-high six assists along with four goals this season. Ruiz suffered a season-ending knee injury in a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles FC in a Leagues Cup match on Aug. 8.

FRIENDLY News: USWNT adds two October friendlies, still without a head coach

The United States women’s national team on Monday announced a pair of October friendlies against Colombia.

The team has not yet announced a replacement for head coach Vlatko Andonovski, however.

Following a disappointing World Cup, the USWNT now looks ahead to the Paris Olympics next summer.

The Americans will face World Cup quarterfinalist Colombia on Oct. 26 in Utah and Oct. 29 in San Diego.

Those games will come after a pair of already-scheduled friendlies against South Africa on Sept. 21 in Cincinnati and Sept. 24 in Chicago.

The U.S. dropped from No. 1 in the world rankings to No. 3 after their World Cup loss to Sweden in the Round of 16. With Andonovski’s departure, Twila Kilgore has taken over as interim head coach.

Retail Giant Nordstroms Closes its San Francisco Flagship Store After 35 Years

After 35 years of operation, retail giant Nordstrom (JWN) has made the difficult decision to close its iconic San Francisco store. The closure marks the end of an era for the company and the city’s shopping landscape. The retail department store says the decision was a difficult business decision and said deteriorating conditions in the neighborhood were one of the reasons for the closure.

Decisions like this are never easy, and this one has been especially difficult,” Nordstrom said. “But as many of you know, the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.”  “With both leases set to expire, and after looking closely at our opportunities in the region, we believe we can better serve our customers there by focusing on our 16 nearby Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations, as well as online.”

https://www.parisjewelry.com/

The Nordstrom store, known for its upscale fashion offerings and exceptional customer service, has been a staple in the heart of San Francisco. However, changing consumer habits, accelerated by the rise of online shopping and the challenges posed by the pandemic, have prompted the company to reevaluate its physical retail strategy.

According to Westfield mall operator, total sales decreased from $455 million in 2019 to $298 million in 2022, while foot traffic decreased from 9.7 million visits in 2019 to 5.6 million in 2022.

San Francisco has struggled in recent years with an intricate and changing crime scene. The city is still vibrant and has a diverse population, but specific areas have seen an increase in thefts and break-ins, which constitute property crime. Additionally, concerns about homelessness have drawn attention to petty crimes and obvious drug use in some public places. Despite the aftermaths of Covid-19 and rising crime, this is not the entire reason Nordstrom’s stock price has lost ground.

The management of Nordstrom attributed the decrease in income on events like the timing of its anniversary sale and shop closings in Canada. It said that “historical highs” in theft losses were also a factor.

As the flagship Nordstrom’s closed, Ikea Furniture store is opening in downtown San Francisco. Executive Director of the SF Economics and Workforce Development Department, Sarah Dennis-Phillips said, “The highest year-over-year increase in the country, according to the director, is the 38% increase in downtown foot traffic. She claims that since the start of the program in February, nearly 4,900 new enterprises have opened in the city, including the new Ikea.” She added, “That’s because of rent and tax breaks, simplified permitting, stricter law enforcement, and chances for pop-up businesses to occupy empty storefronts and offices. Due to this, downtown will look and feel different. “Make San Francisco, San Francisco downtown, and more San Francisco.”

https://organicgreek.com

Nordstrom will open a 23,000-square-foot store at the Pinole Vista Crossing shopping center in Contra Costa County this fall. Additionally, they also recently announced plans to open a 36,000-square-foot store to San Mateo’s Bridgepointe Shopping Center with a projected opening date for the fall of 2024.

NHL News: Oilers sign Sam Gagner, Brandon Sutter to tryout deals

The Edmonton Oilers signed veteran forwards Sam Gagner and Brandon Sutter to professional tryout agreements on Monday.

Gagner, 34, was a first-round pick (sixth overall) by Edmonton in 2007 and played with the Oilers from 2007-14 and 2019-20.

Gagner had 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in 48 games last season with the Winnipeg Jets. He has recorded 519 points (192 goals, 327 assists) and 440 penalty minutes in 1,015 games over 16 seasons with seven teams.

Sutter, also 34, was a first-round pick in the same 2007 draft, going 11th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sutter has not played in an NHL game since May 2021 with Vancouver. He contracted COVID-19 in March of 2021 and experienced “long-haul” symptoms. Sutter has 289 points (152 goals, 137 assists) in 770 games across 13 seasons with the Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins and Canucks.

NHL News: Capitals add new title for GM Brian MacLellan

The Washington Capitals extended general manager Brian MacLellan’s contract and added president of hockey operations to his title on Monday.

MacLellan’s extension is for an undisclosed number of years, per The Washington Post. His contract had been set to expire after the 2023-24 season.

The Capitals also promoted Chris Patrick to associate general manager and moved president Dick Patrick into a new role as team chairman.

MacLellan, 64, has been Washington’s GM since 2014, a span highlighted by the franchise’s first Stanley Cup triumph in 2018. The Capitals are 409-213-77 under his tenure, the third-most wins in the NHL over that span.

Chris Patrick, 47, is entering his 16th season with the Capitals, most recently serving as an assistant GM.

His father, Dick Patrick, 76, has served as the team president and minority owner since 1982. Monday’s move allows him to slide into a less active role with the organization.
