Reports: South Florida to name Amir Abdur-Rahim as coach

South Florida is expected to name Amir Abdur-Rahim as its next head coach, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

The Bulls previously were linked to former Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, who interviewed for the post.

Abdur-Rahim, 42, will take the helm at South Florida after guiding Kennesaw State to its first NCAA Tournament berth. The Atlantic Sun champion Owls (26-9) gave third-seeded Xavier a scare before dropping a 72-67 decision in first-round play in the Midwest Region in Greensboro, N.C.

Abdur-Rahim posted a 45-74 record in four seasons with Kennesaw State.

He effectively replaces Brian Gregory, who was fired after six seasons earlier this month. Gregory had a 79-107 record while leading the Bulls, who have just one winning season in the past decade and have not appeared in the NCAA Tournament since 2012.

Abdur-Rahim is the brother of former NBA player and current G-League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

Mike Jordan out, Mike McGarvey in as Lafayette coach

Lafayette named Mike McGarvey its head coach on Wednesday, with the school announcing it was time to “move the program in a new direction” following an outside investigation into erstwhile coach Mike Jordan.

McGarvey was an assistant to Jordan and took over as interim head coach on Feb. 21 when Lafayette put Jordan on paid leave. At the time, the college said it had received a complaint regarding Jordan and “his work as head coach” and would launch an investigation.

The school did not announce the findings of the investigation into Jordan, who was named head coach of the Leopards before the 2022-23 season. His tenure ends with a 9-20 record.

The Leopards were 0-2 under McGarvey to conclude the regular season, but he had them on the cusp of the NCAA Tournament. The Leopards beat Lehigh in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament, then topped American in a double-overtime thriller in the semifinals. A win over Colgate in the tournament final would have given Lafayette the conference’s automatic entry in the NCAA Tournament, but Colgate prevailed 79-61.

“I am thrilled to become Lafayette’s next head coach,” McGarvey said in a school news release. “Lafayette is a truly special place, and we have a terrific group of young men with whom I’m eager to continue our championship level efforts both on and off the basketball court.”

McGarvey previously spent four seasons as the head coach at Lycoming College, a Division III program in Williamsport, Pa. He also worked on the Colgate coaching staff for seven seasons.

Reports: Posh Alexander transferring from St. John’s

St. John’s junior guards Posh Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu will transfer, the fourth and fifth players to depart the program since Rick Pitino was named new coach, the New York Post and independent journalist Adam Zagoria reported Wednesday.

The pair will join freshman guards AJ Storr and Kolby King, and sophomore forward O’Mar Stanley in the transfer portal, per Tuesday reports.

Alexander is by far the most decorated of the group. He averaged 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in 30 games (28 starts) for St. John’s in the 2022-23 season. It’s unclear if he was welcome to stay under the new regime of Pitino, who made clear he would be overhauling the roster.

Alexander averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists in 84 career games (77 starts) in three seasons for the Red Storm.

Addae-Wusu averaged 9.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in 32 games (19 starts) this past season. The 6-foot-4 Addae-Wusu played in 91 career games (34 starts) in three seasons in New York, averaging 8.2 points.

Pitino was hired earlier this month to replace Mike Anderson, who went 68-56 in four seasons at St. John’s. The Red Storm finished 18-15 this season and never made the NCAA Tournament during Anderson’s tenure.

Army tabs Kevin Kuwik as its next coach

Army named Butler assistant Kevin Kuwik as its next head coach on Wednesday.

Kuwik has more than 20 years’ experience in coaching but also is a military veteran. He served in Iraq and earned a Bronze Star for meritorious service, the highest merit award granted by the Army, according to his Butler bio. He was honorably discharged in 2006 and then resumed his coaching career full-time at Ohio after an 18-month leave of absence for his service.

He worked with Butler coach Thad Matta at Ohio State as video coordinator, then held assistant coaching positions at Dayton and Davidson before reuniting with Matta at Butler in 2022.

“Kevin is uniquely qualified to develop our cadets as both athletes and leaders of character while fulfilling our goal of winning a Patriot League Championship,” Army director of athletics Mike Buddie said. “His experiences at several great institutions as well as his time in the Army will translate well to the culture at West Point.”

Kuwik is champing at the bit to get started with Army.

“What an amazing honor for my family and me. We could not be more thankful to Mike Buddie and his entire leadership team for their belief in me,” Kuwik said. “I am excited to get to work with a special group of young men, producing not only winners but future leaders and defenders of our nation.”

Kuwik replaces Jimmy Allen, who mutually parted ways with the institution earlier this month.

The Black Knights went 17-16 (10-8 Patriot League) this season for the second winning campaign during Allen’s stint. Allen was 98-112 in his seven seasons. His final game was a 91-74 loss to Colgate in the semifinals of the Patriot League tournament.

Penn St. names Mike Rhoades new coach

Penn State hired VCU coach Mike Rhoades as its next basketball coach on Wednesday.

Utah State coach Ryan Odom already is in negotiations to take the VCU post, Stadium and ESPN reported Wednesday.

Rhoades, 50, heads to Penn State to replace Micah Shrewsberry, who formally will be introduced as Notre Dame’s new coach Thursday.

Rhoades will be formally introduced as the Nittany Lions’ coach in a press conference, also on Thursday.

“We are excited to welcome Mike Rhoades as our head men’s basketball coach,” said Dr. Patrick Kraft, Penn State vice president for intercollegiate athletics. “He is a veteran head coach who is a proven winner at multiple levels. Mike has been a tremendous recruiter and talent developer throughout his career.

“As a Pennsylvania native with a strong family history with our University, Mike understands what it means to be a Penn Stater and how impactful it is to be part of Nittany Nation. Mike has a vision of how to build Penn State basketball into a championship program.”

Rhoades stated how he envisions his team playing next season.

“We will be bold, different and aggressive moving our program forward,” he said. “We will play with great energy and excitement while always being relentless in our pursuit of making this basketball family into something special. I can’t wait to get to work.”

Rhoades went 129-61 in six seasons at VCU. He led the Rams to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including this season. VCU lost in the first round to Saint Mary’s.

Rhoades also went 47-52 in three seasons at Rice from 2014-17.

Odom, 48, was the head coach of the 16th-seeded UMBC team that scored the first upset of a top seed in an NCAA Tournament when it beat Virginia in 2018. He moved on to Utah State in 2021 and led the Aggies to a tournament berth this month. No. 7 Missouri topped No. 10 Utah State in the first round, 76-65.

Odom began his career at Charlotte (2014-15), then coached UMBC (2016-2021) and the Aggies. He has a career 149-94 record overall, 44-25 at Utah State.

NBA roundup: Jrue Holiday’s career night helps Bucks best Pacers

Jrue Holiday poured in a career-high 51 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo posted his fifth triple-double of the season to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 149-136 win over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night in Indianapolis.

Holiday became the sixth player in Bucks franchise history to record 50 points in a game. Antetokounmpo has also accomplished the feat, as has guard/forward Khris Middleton. Holiday went 20-for-30 from the field on Wednesday, also sinking 3 of 6 shot attempts from beyond the arc.

In what was the fastest triple-double of his career, Antetokounmpo finished with 38 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists for Milwaukee. Indiana was led by rookie Bennedict Mathurin, who supplied 29 points and nine rebounds. Aaron Nesmith chipped in 22 points, and five other Pacers scored in double figures, including former Bucks forward Jordan Nwora (18 points).

Wednesday’s game was a back-and-forth offensive battle throughout the night, with Milwaukee leading by just four at the break, 73-69. While the Pacers did score 17 points off of Bucks turnovers in the first half, Indiana’s defense could not hold up. Milwaukee led 119-107 by the end of the third quarter and didn’t look back.

Jazz 128, Spurs 117

Talen Horton-Tucker scored a career-high 41 points, including 27 in the first half, as visiting Utah turned it on in the fourth quarter to run away from San Antonio.

The Jazz snapped a four-game losing streak while the Spurs dropped their fifth straight game. Kris Dunn added 17 points for Utah, while Udoka Azubuike scored 12, Ochai Agbaji and Johnny Juzang each hit for 10 and Walker Kessler grabbed 10 rebounds.

Malaki Branham led the Spurs with 21 points while Devonte’ Graham, Tre Jones and Sandro Mamukelashvili had 17 points apiece.

Clippers 141, Grizzlies 132

Russell Westbrook scored 36 points and handed out 10 assists as visiting Los Angeles ended Memphis’ seven-game winning streak.

Robert Covington scored 27 points while shooting 7-for-7 from 3-point range and Bones Hyland added 20 points as the Clippers won without both of their stars. Kawhi Leonard was out for personal reasons, and Paul George missed his fourth consecutive game due to a knee injury.

Ja Morant logged 36 points and nine assists for the Grizzlies, while Dillon Brooks added 30 points as Memphis lost for just the second time in the past 12 games. Morant returned after a one-game absence caused by right thigh soreness.

Thunder 107, Pistons 106

Jalen Williams scored 27 points, including the game-winner at the buzzer, to lead Oklahoma City to a win over visiting Detroit.

The victory, the Thunder’s second in five games, kept Oklahoma City in the 10th spot in the Western Conference. Luguentz Dort added 20 points, Aaron Wiggins scored 19 off the bench on 8-of-11 shooting and Josh Giddey scored 18.

The Pistons have lost seven consecutive games and 18 of their last 19. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 24 points.

Nets 123, Rockets 114

Cameron Johnson scored 31 points as Brooklyn closed the game on an 18-4 run and handed Houston its seventh straight loss in New York.

Mikal Bridges had 27 points, Spencer Dinwiddie added 20 points and 11 assists and Nic Claxton contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds for Brooklyn, which snapped a four-game home losing streak after shooting 9 of 11 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Porter Jr. led Houston with 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Alperen Sengun added 21 points and 12 rebounds. Jalen Green hit two free throws with 3:05 left in the contest to put Houston ahead 110-105 before Brooklyn gained control in a game that featured 25 lead changes and 15 ties.

Knicks 101, Heat 92

RJ Barrett hit a tiebreaking jumper with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter to begin a decisive game-ending run for host New York, which solidified its playoff hopes and earned a key tiebreaker by pulling away from Miami.

Immanuel Quickley scored a game-high 24 points off the bench while Quentin Grimes added 23 points for the Knicks, who ended the game on a 17-8 run. With the victory, New York won the season series between the teams 3-1 while extending its lead over the seventh-place Heat to four games.

Gabe Vincent scored 21 points for the Heat, who also fell 1 1/2 games behind the sixth-place Brooklyn Nets by virtue of the latter’s win over the Houston Rockets. Quickley hit a technical free throw to tie the score at 84-84 after Cody Zeller was whistled for defensive three seconds with 8:42 left. The teams combined to miss their next four shots before Barrett put the Knicks ahead for good.

76ers 116, Mavericks 108

Joel Embiid scored 25 points, James Harden recorded a double-double of 15 points and 12 assists and host Philadelphia snapped out of a three-game slump with a win over reeling Dallas.

Philadelphia overcame a sluggish start in which it fell behind by 12 points during the first half before ratcheting up the defensive pressure after intermission. The 76ers held the Mavericks to just 17 fourth-quarter points on 7-of-19 shooting from the floor.

Luka Doncic flirted with a triple-double for Dallas, posting team highs of 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. The loss is Dallas’ fifth in the last six games, contributing to the Mavericks’ slide in the Western Conference standings. They are currently outside of the play-in tournament.

Despite losing their second straight, the Bulls maintained a two-game lead on Washington for the No. 10 seed in the East and the final slot in the conference play-in tournament. Nikola Vucevic registered a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds for Chicago.

Kings blitz Blazers, end longest playoff drought in NBA history

Malik Monk scored 19 points off the bench and the Sacramento Kings ended the longest playoff drought in NBA history with a 120-80 thumping of the host Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

De’Aaron Fox scored 18 points, Kevin Huerter added 17 and Domantas Sabonis had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Kings (46-30), who missed the playoffs for 16 consecutive seasons since last qualifying during the 2005-06 campaign.

Sacramento had held the longest active playoff drought among the four major North American professional sports leagues. That dubious distinction now belongs to the New York Jets, who have gone 12 years without reaching the NFL postseason.

Kings forward Keegan Murray scored 13 points and made three 3-pointers to set the NBA rookie record with 188 treys in a season. Murray passed the mark set by Donovan Mitchell (187) in 2017-18 with the Utah Jazz.

Shaedon Sharpe scored a career-high 30 points and also had seven rebounds and seven assists for Portland, which lost for the 10th time in the past 11 games. Kevin Knox II had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Jabari Walker also scored 12 points for the Trail Blazers (32-44).

Portland was competitive for the first 28 1/2 minutes before getting outscored 37-8 over the next 10-plus minutes as the game dissolved into a blowout.

Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard (calf) is done for the season and fellow starters Jerami Grant (quadriceps), Jusuf Nurkic (knee) and Anfernee Simons (foot) all sat out. Portland also was without Keon Johnson (finger), Cam Reddish (back) and Trendon Watford (ankle) and used just seven players.

Sacramento shot 45.7 percent from the field — including 18 of 48 (37.5 percent) from 3-point range — while moving within two games of the second-place Memphis Grizzlies (48-28) in the Western Conference.

Murray swished a 3-pointer with 6:44 left in the third quarter to set the rookie record and give the Kings a 67-57 lead. The trey came during a quarter-ending 21-7 run in which Sacramento turned a five-point lead into a 83-64 advantage.

The Kings continued the assault by scoring 16 of the first 17 points of the final stanza to increase the lead to 99-65 with 8:43 remaining.

Portland shot just 32.3 percent from the field, including 9 of 39 (23.1 percent) from behind the arc.

Huerter scored 12 points in the first half as the Kings built a 50-46 lead. Sacramento led by as many as 12 in the second quarter before Portland narrowed the gap.

Kings’ Keegan Murray breaks rookie mark for 3-pointers

Sacramento forward Keegan Murray swished a 3-pointer during the third quarter of the Kings’ Wednesday road game against the Portland Trail Blazers to set the NBA rookie record with 188 treys in a season.

Murray’s 3-pointer with 6:44 left in the quarter allowed him to break the previous mark set by Donovan Mitchell in 2017-18 when he was a member of the Utah Jazz.

The trey was Murray’s third of the game. Murray entered the contest tied for second in 3-pointers by a rookie, as Damian Lillard made 185 for the Trail Blazers in 2012-13.

Murray has the highest 3-point field-goal percentage (40.7 percent entering Wednesday) for a rookie who had at least 400 long-range attempts. Saddiq Bey is second on that list after hitting 38 percent for the Detroit Pistons in 2020-21.

Murray, the fourth overall draft pick last year out of Iowa, entered the night with averages of 11.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in 73 games (71 starts).

Knicks All-Star F Julius Randle injures ankle

Having already locked up their best record in a decade and closing in on clinching a playoff berth, the New York Knicks haven’t had much in the way of bad news this season.

Now they’re holding their breath that doesn’t change in the regular season’s closing days.

All-Star forward Julius Randle, who hasn’t missed a game this season, sprained his left ankle in New York’s 101-92 home win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The Knicks are uncertain of his status going forward.

Randle sustained the injury in the second quarter, rolling his ankle while landing on Bam Adebayo’s foot as Randle grabbed an offensive rebound.

After getting up, Randle had a visible limp and was clearly in pain. He nonetheless made one of his two free throws (Adebayo was called for a foul on the play) before the Knicks removed him from the game. The team announced the injury and declared him out for the game at halftime.

After the game, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said more tests would be performed on Randle’s ankle Thursday.

The Knicks ended the night 44-33, in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. They are guaranteed to finish with their best record in an 82-game season since going 54-28 in the 2012-13 season. Randle, an All-Star for the second time this season, leads the team in scoring (25.1 points per game) and rebounding (10.0 boards per game).

Randle scored three points and grabbed five rebounds in 15 minutes on Wednesday.

Anthony Davis, LeBron James power Lakers past Bulls

Anthony Davis had 38 points and 10 rebounds and LeBron James added 25 points to boost the visiting Los Angeles Lakers to a 121-110 win against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night.

Davis and James were a combined 23-for-39 (58.9 percent) from the floor and teamed for 17 boards as Los Angeles avenged Sunday’s home loss to Chicago. The Lakers (38-38) won for the fourth time in five games to tie New Orleans for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Despite losing their second straight, the Bulls (36-40) maintained a two-game lead on Washington for the No. 10 seed in the East and the final slot in the conference play-in tournament.

Nikola Vucevic registered a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds for Chicago. DeMar DeRozan (22 points), Coby White (17), Zach LaVine (16) and Ayo Dosunmu (12) also finished with double digits. White dished a game-high nine assists.

Austin Reaves scored 19 points for Los Angeles. D’Angelo Russell, who had missed the past two games with right hip soreness, added 17 points for the Lakers in the opener of a five-game road trip. Jarred Vanderbilt had seven rebounds.

Balanced scoring and steady rebounding boosted Los Angeles to a 59-51 halftime lead. Davis led the team with 16 points, while James (13) and Reaves (12) followed. The Lakers scored 17 second-chance points in the first half.

Vucevic scored 19 points before intermission and DeRozan chipped in 11. LaVine was whistled for three first-half fouls for the Bulls, who showed resilience to stick around. After trailing 27-10 in the early going, Chicago later rallied to take a 35-34 lead.

The loss snapped a three-game series winning streak for the Bulls, who haven’t defeated the Lakers in four straight games since the 1991 NBA Finals.

Los Angeles has won nine of 12 against Chicago.

Andre Drummond missed the game for the Bulls due to personal reasons. Drummond previously had tweeted his intent to delete social media to focus on his mental health.
