NHL News: Wild snap skid with shootout win over Devils

Mats Zuccarello and Frederick Gaudreau each scored in a shootout as the Minnesota Wild snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night in Saint Paul, Minn.

Zuccarello started the shootout by firing a wrist shot through the pads of Devils goalie Vitek Vanecek. Minnesota goaltender Filip Gustavsson then made a pad save on a wrist shot by Tomas Tatar. After Vanecek made a pad save on Kirill Kaprizov, Gustavsson made a toe save on Jesper Bratt’s attempt by the left post, setting the stage for Gaudreau’s game-winner which came on a wrist shot into the top right corner.

Ryan Hartman and Joel Eriksson Ek scored goals for Minnesota, while Gustavsson finished with 27 saves.

Tatar scored two goals for New Jersey, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Vanecek stopped 22 of 24 shots but had his career-best personal 10-game winning streak snapped.

Minnesota took a 1-0 lead at the 5:52 mark of the first period on a power-play goal by Eriksson Ek. Defenseman Calen Addison set up the score with a wrist shot from inside the blue line that Eriksson Ek deflected past Vanecek’s blocker side for his 20th goal of the season, 10 of which have come on the power play.

Tatar tied it, 1-1, early in the second period with a one-timer from the left circle off an Ondrej Palat pass past Gustavsson’s glove side right as a holding penalty on Eriksson Ek expired.

Tatar then gave New Jersey a 2-1 lead at the 6:04 mark of the period when Jesper Boqvist’s shot from the right point deflected off his right skate over Gustavsson’s glove for his 12th goal of the season.

Hartman tied it early in the third period when Matt Dumba’s slap shot from the right post caromed off his ribs and then down off the skate of defenseman Dougie Hamilton and into the right corner of the net.

Calle Rosen scored twice for St. Louis and Brandon Saad, Sammy Blais and Robert Thomas also scored. Jordan Kyrou and Brayden Schenn each had two assists and Jordan Binnington made 23 saves.

Kyrou exited the game late in the third period after taking a big hit.

Then Schmaltz scored an inadvertent power-play goal at the 9:31 mark. His cross-crease pass caromed off Blues defenseman Colton Parayko and into the net.

Saad cut the Arizona lead to 2-1 midway through the second period on a clean break-in. Vejmelka stopped the shot, but Saad banked in the rebound from behind the net.

Artemi Panarin scored four goals to lead the New York Rangers to a 6-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday night.

Panarin, who entered the game with 199 career NHL goals, scored three straight as the Rangers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win their fifth straight game. It was Panarin’s first four-goal game, and he added an assist.

Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves and won his seventh straight start.

Teuvo Teravainen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored for the Hurricanes, who had won seven straight, but were playing their first game since the All-Star break. Frederik Andersen made 13 saves.

Carolina’s Sebastian Aho saw his six-game goal streak end.

Mika Zibanejad gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 13:37 of the first period. After his initial shot was blocked by Jordan Martinook, Zibanejad got the puck back and lifted it high past Andersen.

The Hurricanes tied it 1-1 at 6:50 of the second period when Teravainen’s shot from the right face-off circle deflected in off Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller.

Kotkaniemi gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead at 9:43 of the second. Halak made the initial save on Kotkaniemi’s point blank shot, but the Carolina forward got to the rebound and backhanded it home.

Moments later Halak made a great save against Aho on a partial breakaway to maintain the lead.

Panarin completed the hat trick on a breakaway to make it 4-2 at 15:59.

Kaapo Kakko scored into an empty net with 2:14 remaining and, with Andersen back on the ice, Panarin scored his 16th of the season with 1:04 to play.

Kent Johnson scored a go-ahead goal early in the third period, and the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets came back from a first-period, two-goal deficit to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 Saturday night.

Johnson also had an assist, and both Boone Jenner and Kirill Marchenko tallied a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets. Sean Kuraly also scored, while Elvis Merzlikins made 27 saves.

The teams split a two-game home-and-home series. Toronto won 3-0 at Columbus on Friday.

William Nylander had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs. Michael Bunting and Morgan Rielly also scored, and Mitchell Marner added two assists.

Joseph Woll, making his first start of the season for Toronto, stopped 36 shots.

Nylander scored his 29th goal of the season at 2:39 of the first period on a shot from the left circle. Alexander Kerfoot’s stretch pass sprung Nylander.

Bunting scored his 16th goal of the season at 10:40 of the first on a 23-foot shot that went over the shoulder of Merzlikins. Marner made the pass after a turnover deep in the Columbus zone.

NHL News: Avalanche hold on for 5-3 win over Panthers

Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals and had one assist, leading the visiting Colorado Avalanche to a 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night in Sunrise, Fla.

Alexandar Georgiev made 42 saves and improved his record to 21-12-3.

Logan O’Connor, Matt Nieto and Devon Toews also scored for the Avalanche, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Mikko Rantanen and J.T. Compher had two assists each.

Colorado’s Cale Makar missed a second straight game due to an upper-body injury.

Aaron Ekblad, Sam Bennett and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers, who had their three-game winning streak broken. Barkov returned from a one-game absence (hand injury).

Sam Reinhart added two assists for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky made 45 saves as his record dropped to 14-14-2.

Colorado opened the scoring on O’Connor’s short-handed goal with 3:35 expired in the first period. The play started with a two-on-one rush. Bobrovsky stopped Andrew Cogliano’s initial shot, but O’Connor tapped in the rebound.

The Avalanche made it 2-0 with 8:04 gone. Compher stole the puck from Barkov, and, from behind Florida’s net, centered the puck for Nieto, who slid the puck past Bobrovsky.

Florida got on the board at 7:03 of the second on a long Ekblad shot from the point.

The Panthers tied the score 65 seconds later as Eric Staal’s cross-ice pass connected with Bennett, who hit the net on a wrist shot from the right circle.

However, it took just 25 seconds for Toews to give Colorado a 3-2 lead. MacKinnon started the sequence with a pass to Bowen Byram, whose shot from the point was stopped by Bobrovsky. Toews then tapped in another easy rebound.

Colorado extended its advantage to 4-2 with 5:59 left in the second. MacKinnon was heavily involved again as he drew a tripping penalty on Eetu Luostarinen. Then, on the power play, Rantanen gathered a rebound and shoved the puck back to MacKinnon, who scored top shelf from the slot.

Florida cut its deficit to 4-3 at 11:03 of the third as Barkov tapped in the puck on a great pass from Reinhart.

The Panthers then had a power play after Evan Rodrigues was caught holding Matthew Tkachuk with 5:13 left. Florida nearly scored, but Brandon Montour’s shot hit the inside of the left post.

MacKinnnon’s empty-net goal with 59 seconds left made it 5-3.

NHL News: Capitals edge Bruins after long break for both teams

Nicklas Backstrom and Garnet Hathaway scored a goal apiece to lead the Washington Capitals past the host Boston Bruins 2-1 Saturday in both teams’ first game following the All-Star break.

Washington earned its first regulation win since Jan. 19 but has won three of its last four games.

Hathaway’s game-winning goal came in the second period. He has tallied in two straight contests for the first time this season.

Washington’s Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves, stopping all 10 shots he faced in the third period.

A late penalty gave Boston a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 25.5 seconds with goaltender Jeremy Swayman pulled.

Nick Foligno scored and Swayman made 21 saves for Boston, which is 2-3-1 in a six-game span. Swayman had gone 7-0-3 in his previous 10 starts, but it was his first action since Jan. 28.

Boston had a 28-23 advantage in shots on goal.

The opening 5:48 featured five penalties called between the two teams, and Washington took a 1-0 lead on Backstrom’s 5-on-3 goal at the 6:28 mark. After Marcus Johansson took the initial whack just outside Swayman’s crease, Backstrom finished at the right side.

Boston picked up its pace as the period closed, but the score was still 1-0 at the intermission as Kuemper made an impressive stick save on Nick Foligno with less than six minutes to play.

The Washington stopper kept the one-goal margin halfway through the middle period, denying Brad Marchand’s wrister from the right circle after a brilliant backhand feed by Charlie McAvoy.

Hathaway doubled the Washington lead at 11:40, keeping the puck in at the blue line after a failed clear before stepping into the high slot for a wrister that beat Swayman high.

Just after Taylor Hall’s forecheck broke up a potential odd-man rush, the Bruins cut their deficit to 2-1 when Foligno corralled a bouncing puck behind the net and tucked it under Kuemper’s pad with 3:26 remaining.

The Bruins could not capitalize on a power play midway through the third, with Kuemper stopping a Bergeron one-timer from the bumper. Boston finished 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

NHL News: Golden Knights relieved to return home against Ducks

The Vegas Golden Knights play their first home game in 22 days when they open a three-game homestand with a Super Bowl Sunday matinee contest against the Anaheim Ducks in Las Vegas.

The Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights last played at T-Mobile Arena on Jan. 21 when they defeated the Washington Capitals, 6-2. Vegas then played six consecutive road games, losing the first four (0-2-2) entering their bye week and All-Star break before rebounding with back-to-back 5-1 wins at Nashville and Minnesota on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

With four teams — Vegas, Edmonton, Seattle and Los Angeles — all bunched within three points at the top of the Pacific entering play on Saturday, the Golden Knights, who are just 14-13-0 at home, can ill afford to slip up against the last-place Ducks.

“This is the time that the good teams, they don’t let points slip away,” Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “They (the players) have to understand the urgency when you get into the last 30, 25 games, especially the position we’re in. There are very few teams that can cruise home. I think our guys are veteran enough to know that.”

Vegas will have to do it without All-Star goaltender Logan Thompson for at least the near term.

Thompson had to be helped off the ice with a non-contact left leg injury 1:19 into the third period of Thursday’s win over the Wild and is listed as week-to-week. Veteran Laurent Brossoit was called up Saturday from the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League to take Thompson’s spot and will team up with Adin Hill in net.

“He’s been the backbone of our group all year,” center Jack Eichel said of Thompson. “He’s done a lot of the heavy lifting and made a lot of big saves. It’s really hard to see him go down.”

A big key for Vegas down the stretch could be the play of Eichel.

Eichel, who missed 11 games in December with a lower-body injury, had two goals and four points in his first three games back but tallied just one assist and a minus-eight rating over the next nine games. He broke out of that slump with a goal and an assist against Minnesota.

Cassidy speculated the nine-day break may have played a key part in that.

“It looked like he had his burst back, so I don’t know if the break did him some good in terms of the injury he had earlier in the year or not,” Cassidy said. “No idea, but it sure looked like he had his jump back.”

Anaheim had a five-game point streak (4-0-1) snapped with a 6-3 loss to visiting Pittsburgh on Thursday as goaltender John Gibson set a franchise record with 53 saves.

“It’s tough when you give up (59) shots, to stay in a game,” center Trevor Zegras told the Orange County Register. “That’s the way it goes when you play a heavy veteran team like that.”

“We played a hesitant game,” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said. “We were chasing the game. We ran into a desperate team. … For a good part of the game, I thought we stood in awe of some of their players.”

It was the eighth time this season that Gibson has had 40 or more saves in a game. One of the other times was when the Ducks faced Vegas.

Gibson made 49 stops and denied two shootout tries in a 3-2 victory on Dec. 28 in Anaheim to even the season series at one win apiece. The Golden Knights won the first meeting, 4-0, in Las Vegas on Oct. 28 with Thompson making 29 saves.
