NCAAF News: Illinois holds off Florida Atlantic, 23-17

Luke Altmyer passed for 303 yards and a touchdown to lead Illinois to a 23-17 win against visiting Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon.

Altmyer completed 25 of 36 passes, including eight for 120 yards to Isaiah Williams. Griffin Moore hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass for Illinois (2-2), which finished with 510 total yards.

Reggie Love III had 85 of the 207 rushing yards for the Illini.

Daniel Richardson made his first start at quarterback for FAU after Casey Thompson tore his ACL in last Saturday’s loss to Clemson and the junior transfer from Central Michigan completed 28 of 49 passes for 256 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

LaJohntay Wester caught 13 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown for the Owls (1-3).

Illinois started slow offensively and trailed 10-0 after the first quarter.

The Illini were stopped on downs on their opening drive and Altmyer lost a fumble on the second when he was sacked by Xavier Peters and Jayden Williams recovered at the Illinois 28-yard line.

Richardson quickly hit Wester for a 21-yard gain to the 7, but the Owls had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Logan Lupo for a 3-0 lead with 3:14 left in the opening quarter.

FAU started its next drive at the Illinois 38 following a 20-yard punt return by Wester that included an unnecessary roughing penalty on Illinois.

Three plays later, Richardson hit Wester for a 19-yard touchdown strike on the final play of the first quarter, stretching the lead to 10-0

The Ilini began chipping away when Altmyer hit Moore for a 46-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 10-7 with 12:46 left in the first half.

Illinois took its first lead of the game 14-10 on a 7-yard touchdown run by Altmyer with 1:45 left before halftime.

The Illini scored on their first drive of the second half when Aidan Laughery ran into the end zone from 3 yards to make it 20-10.

Caleb Griffin tacked on a 44-yard field goal with 3:57 left in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 23-10.

The Owls had the ball in the red zone twice in the third quarter but were stopped on downs the first time and Richardson was intercepted in the end zone on the second trip.

They scored with 4:19 left in the game on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Richardson to BJ Alexander to cut the lead to 23-17.

NCAAF News: Tyler Van Dyke, No. 20 Miami blow past Temple

Tyler Van Dyke tossed three touchdown passes and added the longest run of his college career, a 37-yarder, as the 20th-ranked Miami Hurricanes defeated the Temple Owls 41-7 on a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Henry Parrish Jr. rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 8.7 yards on his 16 carries, as Miami (4-0) defeated Temple (2-2) for the 14th straight time.

The Hurricanes outrushed the Owls 323 yards to 11.

Xavier Restrepo caught two TD passes and fellow Hurricanes wide receiver Colbie Young made the most sensational play of the game, fully stretching his 6-foot-5 frame to catch the ball at the 3-yard-line and then stretching again to reach the end zone to complete a 28-yard score.

Te’Cory Couch intercepted two passes and Jahfari Harvey recovered a fumble for Miami.

The Hurricanes, who played their first road game of the season, are 4-0 for the first time since 2017.

Temple, which hadn’t played Miami since 2005, was led by quarterback E.J. Warner, who completed 22 of 39 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown. However, Warner, the son of former NFL star Kurt Warner, turned the ball over three times.

Van Dyke did not turn the ball over, completing 17 of 24 tosses for 220 yards.

Miami led 7-0 after one quarter, 24-7 at halftime and 38-7 heading into the fourth.

The Hurricanes, who scored on their first three possessions, made it 7-0 on Van Dyke’s 7-yard lob to Restrepo in the left corner of the end zone late in the first quarter.

Temple reached Miami’s 18 on its second possession, but Warner was pressured and his lob into the end zone was intercepted by Couch.

Miami extended its lead to 14-0 on a drive that featured Van Dyke’s long run. Then, on third-and-4, Van Dyke connected with Young on the sensational 28-yard touchdown.

The Hurricanes made it 17-0 on Andres Borregales’ 26-yard field goal. The highlight of that drive was a perfectly placed 39-yard pass to Jacolby George down the right sideline.

Temple had a clear shot at a touchdown with 6:03 left in the second quarter, but Warner overthrew an open Amad Anderson Jr. in the end zone. Then, after a sack by Leonard Taylor, Temple went for it on fourth down and threw incomplete.

Later in the second quarter, Miami added Parrish’s 13-yard TD run for a 24-0 lead.

Temple finally got on the board with two seconds left in the first half on Warner’s 9-yard TD pass to Reese Clark. Warner completed that throw under heavy pressure.

Miami, though, opened the third quarter with Parrish’s 3-yard TD run. The Hurricanes, who led 31-7 at that point, cruised from there.

NCAAF News: Jordan Waters helps No. 18 Duke trounce UConn

No. 18 Duke’s defense dominated and running back Jordan Waters ran for two touchdowns in a 41-7 victory against host Connecticut on Saturday at East Hartford, Conn.

Quarterback Riley Leonard threw for 248 yards on 23-of-34 passing with a touchdown as Duke took control in the second quarter on the way to setting up a showdown with visiting Notre Dame next weekend.

Leonard also scored on a run as the Blue Devils (4-0) won their first four games for the first time since 2018.

Duke’s defense also got into the scoring act, with defensive tackle DeWayne Carter recovering a third-quarter fumble for a touchdown.

UConn (0-4) had 203 yards of total offense, with 108 of those coming in the fourth quarter. Huskies quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson was 13-for-28 for 114 yards in the air, though he ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the waning seconds.

Leonard was Duke’s top rusher with 30 yards on four carries. Waters has multiple touchdown runs in three games this season.

Victor Rosa gained 68 yards on 14 carries for the Huskies.

The Blue Devils opened a 27-0 halftime lead.

Duke needed to go only 44 yards for its first touchdown, with Waters running in from 1 yard out.

Todd Pelino’s 50-yard field goal began the second quarter scoring. He booted a 40-yarder on the last play of the half, but in between those field goals the Blue Devils tacked on two touchdowns.

Waters ran 10 yards for a touchdown on the first play following a UConn fumble. Leonard’s 3-yard touchdown run capped a nine-play 49-yard drive.

After Carter’s fumble recovery for a touchdown, the Blue Devils stretched the lead to 41-0 with 3:01 left in the third quarter on Leonard’s 22-yard pass to Jordan Moore. Moore ended up with a team-high 86 receiving yards on eight catches.

UConn lost to another Atlantic Coast Conference team at home in last month’s season opener vs. North Carolina State.

NCAAF News: Jalen Milroe returns with a bang to lift No. 13 Alabama over No. 15 Ole Miss

Jalen Milroe returned from a one-game benching to pass for 225 yards and a touchdown and No. 13 Alabama defeated No. 15 Ole Miss 24-10 in the SEC opener for both teams Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Milroe, who completed 17 of 21 passes, was efficient except for one interception, and the Crimson Tide (3-1, 1-0 SEC) shut down a Rebels’ offense that had averaged 52.7 points in three nonconference wins.

Jaxson Dart passed for 244 yards and rushed for a touchdown for the Rebels (3-1, 0-1), who lost for the eighth consecutive time to their West division rival after rushing for just 56 yards.

On the second play of the second half, Milroe connected with Jermaine Burton for a 54-yard pass completion. The Tide reached the 5 and Will Reichard kicked a 23-yard field goal to give them a 9-7 lead.

The Rebels reached their own 49-yard line before Dart’s deep pass was intercepted by Terrion Arnold, who returned it 37 yards to the Alabama 41.

Six plays later, Milroe threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Hale, and Ty Simpson’s two-point conversion run gave the Tide a 17-7 lead.

Caden Davis kicked a 35-yard field goal with 34 seconds left to pull Ole Miss within 17-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Jase McClellan’s 8-yard touchdown run gave Alabama a 24-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. He finished with 105 yards on 17 rushes.

On Alabama’s first possession, Milroe had runs of 20 and 18 yards and pass completions of 8 and 6 yards, leading to Reichard’s 48-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Dart had 59 passing yards before running 10 yards for a touchdown that gave Ole Miss a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Tide got the ball at the Rebels’ 1 after blocking a punt, but a fumbled shotgun snap and two sacks led Milroe to lose 13, 4 and 4 yards. Reichard’s 40-yard field goal trimmed Ole Miss’ lead to 7-6 at halftime.

NCAAF News: No. 11 Utah’s defense overwhelms No. 22 UCLA

Karene Reid’s interception returned for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage set the tone for No. 11-ranked Utah, as the Utes’ defense overwhelmed No. 22 UCLA en route to a 14-7 Pac-12 Conference win on Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Utah (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) held UCLA to just 243 total yards, an average of 3.6 per play, and went until late in the fourth quarter without surrendering a point.

The Utes needed this stout defensive effort, struggling offensively in their own right. Utah managed only 219 total yards with 3.4 per play.

Quarterback Nate Johnson — starting with Cameron Rising still recovering from a torn ACL sustained in last January’s Rose Bowl Game — threw for Utah’s lone offensive score. He found Landen King for a 7-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave the Utes enough cushion to hold off the Bruins.

UCLA (3-1, 0-1) leaned on the freshman quarterback Dante Moore with the run game rendered ineffective. The Bruins rushed for just 9 yards officially, a byproduct of Moore being sacked seven times.

Jonah Elliss led the charge with 3.5 sacks. Sione Vaki recorded one on the final defensive snap.

The pressure resulted in Moore finishing with minus-51 yards rushing. Despite gaining positive yardage on a keeper inside the red zone as the third quarter ended, Moore lost a fumble caused by Logan Fano, keeping the Bruins scoreless.

Moore went 15-of-35 passing for 234 yards and denied Utah its first shutout since 2019 with a 17-yard pass to Josiah Norwood with 3:39 left.

UCLA forced a punt and regained possession with an opportunity to tie, but Vaki’s sack closed a four-and-out turnover on downs.

Johnson finished 9-of-17 passing for 117 yards. Jaylon Glover rushed for 86 yards on 25 carries to lead the Utes. Along with his interception, Reid made nine tackles and broke up a pair of passes.

Kain Medrano had 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks for UCLA.

NFL News: Report: ‘Inappropriate activity’ led Bears DC to resign

Alan Williams left his job as Chicago Bears defensive coordinator in part because of “inappropriate activity,” ESPN reported Sunday.

Williams abruptly resigned Wednesday.

ESPN said there was no suspicion that he had committed a crime. Instead, the team’s human resources staff was involved in the issue.

Williams, 53, missed last week’s game at Tampa Bay for what the team said was personal reasons. On Wednesday, he issued a statement that said he was resigning to take “a step back to take care of my health and family.”

ESPN said a digital forensic search was done on the team’s behalf in conjunction with Williams’ resignation.

Head coach Matt Eberflus will call the plays on defense for the Bears (0-2), who play the Chiefs (1-1) in Kansas City on Sunday.

NFL News: Chargers CB J.C. Jackson healthy scratch vs. Vikings

Los Angeles Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson was made a healthy scratch for Sunday’s game versus star wide receiver Justin Jefferson and the host Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis.

According to reports, the move is a coach’s decision on Jackson, who signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract in May 2022.

Jackson, 27, struggled in five games during his first year with the Chargers in 2022 before sustaining a season-ending injury to his right knee. He allowed a 149.3 passing rating when targeted, per Pro Football Reference.

A Pro Bowl selection with the New England Patriots in 2021, Jackson has three tackles, three passes defensed and an interception in two games this season.

The Chargers (0-2), in turn, will lean on Asante Samuel Jr., Michael Davis, Ja’Sir Taylor and Deane Leonard as their cornerbacks versus the Vikings (0-2).

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said last week that the plan moving forward is to rotate Jackson, Samuel and Davis.

NFL News: Titans WR DeAndre Hopkins (ankle) active vs. Browns

Tennessee Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is listed as active for Sunday’s game against the host Cleveland Browns.

This past week, Hopkins turned in a full practice on Wednesday, a limited session on Thursday and did not participate in practice on Friday as he deals with a nagging ankle injury.

Hopkins, 31, did not practice ahead of Week 2 due to the injury he sustained on the last offensive play for the Titans (1-1) in their 16-15 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 10. He then played last Sunday and had four catches for 40 yards in a 27-24 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

A three-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection, Hopkins has 864 catches for 11,403 yards and 71 touchdowns in 147 games (all starts) with the Houston Texans (2013-19), Arizona Cardinals (2020-22) and Titans.

While Hopkins is active for the Titans, the team listed the following players as inactive: quarterback Will Levis, wide receiver Colton Dowell, cornerback Kindle Vildor, linebackers Caleb Murphy and Trevis Gipson, and offensive linemen Peter Skoronski and Jaelyn Duncan.

As for the Browns (1-1), they ruled out cornerback Greg Newsome II, safety Ronnie Hickman, center Luke Wypler, defensive end Isaiah McGuire, defensive tackle Siaki Ika and offensive tackle James Hudson III.

NFL News: Packers RB Aaron Jones, WR Christian Watson inactive vs. Saints

Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones, wide receiver Christian Watson, left tackle David Bakhtiari and cornerback Jaire Alexander were ruled inactive for Sunday’s game against the visiting New Orleans Saints.

All four players were listed as questionable on Friday by the Packers (1-1), who have a quick turnaround with a home game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday.

Jones sustained a hamstring injury at the end of his 35-yard touchdown catch-and-run in Green Bay’s 38-20 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sept. 10. He finished with nine carries for 41 yards and a score and two receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Fellow running back A.J. Dillon likely will see a boost in playing time with Jones sidelined for the second straight game.

Watson has yet to make his season debut due to his hamstring injury. He recorded 41 catches for 611 yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games (11 starts) as a rookie in 2022.

Bakhtiari is nursing a knee injury. The three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro first-team selection has made 130 regular season starts for Green Bay, although a knee injury limited him to one start in 2021 and 11 in 2022.

Alexander was added to the Packers’ injury report on Friday with a back injury. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has eight tackles and two pass deflections in two games this season.

The Packers also listed defensive backs Anthony Johnson Jr. and Zayne Anderson as well as offensive guard Elgton Jenkins as inactive.

As for the Saints (2-0), they listed the following as inactive for Sunday’s game: cornerback Paulson Adebo, tight end Foster Moreau, wide receiver A.T. Perry, offensive lineman Nick Saldiveri and defensive lineman Kyle Phillips.

NFL News: Report: Chargers’ Joey Bosa (hamstring) active vs. Vikings

Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa, who has been limited by a hamstring injury, will be active Sunday at the Minnesota Vikings, NFL Network reported.

It’s a must-win game for both teams, each seeking to avoid an 0-3 start to the season.

Per NFL Network, Bosa is expected to play more snaps than in Week 2, when he took part in 29 percent of the snaps in a 27-24 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Bosa, 28, has five tackles and two sacks on the season.

Bosa has played in 86 games (80 starts) since the Chargers selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was limited to just five games last season due to a groin injury.

In his career, he has 62.5 sacks and 306 tackles, plus 14 forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
