NFL News: Usher to headline Super Bowl LVIII halftime show

Usher will headline the halftime show at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, the NFL announced Sunday.

The game will be played Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium.

“Usher is an icon whose music has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape throughout his career. We couldn’t be more excited to have him headline this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show,” Seth Dudowsky, the head of music for the NFL, said in a statement.

Usher has had nine No. 1 hits and 18 in the top 10 on the Billboard music charts since 1997. The 44-year-old is an eight-time Grammy Award winner.

“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” Usher said in a statement. “Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon.”

Usher has collaborated with some of the biggest stars in music, undoubtedly leading fans to wonder who might show up on the Super Bowl stage alongside him.

Super Bowl LVIII will represent the fifth partnership between the NFL and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation to produce the halftime show. The 2023 headliner was Rihanna, the first year the show was sponsored by Apple Music.

CBS will broadcast the game.

NFL News: Report: Nick Chubb out for season, but injury not career-threatening

Tests show that Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb’s gruesome injury is not as bad as initially feared, and though he will be out for the rest of this season, the injury is now not considered career-threatening, according to ESPN.

Initial indications were that Chubb, 27, sustained a torn left anterior crucial ligament, but doctors now reportedly believe that although he stretched the ACL on the play, it was not a complete tear.

Chubb is now believed to have torn only his medial collateral ligament, which is not considered a career-ending injury, per ESPN. He is still expected to need six to eight months to recover.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski had announced Tuesday that Chubb would undergo season-ending surgery, which reportedly is expected to take place this week.

In Cleveland’s 26-22 loss to the host Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, Chubb rushed up the middle for a gain of 5 yards with 14:14 left in the second quarter and was in the process of being tackled by Pittsburgh linebacker Cole Holcomb when safety Minkah Fitzpatrick dropped his shoulder and ran directly into Chubb’s left knee.

The hit by Fitzpatrick caused Chubb’s leg to bend, and Chubb sat up and grabbed his knee and could be heard yelling in anguish through the field microphones.

Chubb rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries before exiting. He has 170 yards on 28 carries this season.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of the past four seasons, gaining a career-high 1,525 last season. Chubb had 996 yards as a rookie in 2018 before beginning his streak of 1,000-yard seasons.

Brinker International Earns an Upgrade at Stifel

0

Brinker International (NYSE:EAT) earned an upgrade from Stifel, which comes after the analysts conducted investor meetings with Brinker’s management team. They came away with a more optimistic view of the turnaround efforts at Chili’s, a subsidiary of Brinker International.
Stifel analysts upgraded the company from Hold to Buy and raised the price target from $38 to $45.
The analysts expressed confidence in Brinker’s strategic plan, which they believe aligns with successful restaurant turnaround strategies implemented by brands like Olive Garden, Popeyes, and KFC. They highlighted that Chili’s faces operational challenges, but there are multiple opportunities in the coming quarters to make changes that can enhance the experiences of both team members and customers.

Nike Stock Gains 6 percent Following Q1 EPS Beat

0

Nike (NYSE:NKE) posted fiscal first-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations, resulting in a 6% surge in its stock price on Friday, even though the company missed revenue estimates. The revenue shortfall was attributed to challenges in North America and an economic slowdown in its crucial Chinese market.
For the fiscal first quarter, Nike reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.94 on revenue of $12.94 billion. Street estimated EPS of $0.75 on revenue of $13.02 billion.
While Nike brand digital sales recorded a 2% increase, growth in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), Greater China, and APLA (Asia Pacific and Latin America) regions partially offset a decline in North America. Sales in North America dropped by 2%, while sales in China, a critical market for the company, rose by 5% to $1.74 billion, though this figure fell short of Street’s estimate of $1.84 billion.

AB InBev Stock Rises 3 percent on BofA Upgrade

0

AB InBev (NYSE:BUD) saw its stock price rise by more than 3% on Friday, driven by a rare upgrade of the beverage giant. AB InBev has been contending with a slowdown in Bud Light sales amidst a controversial advertising campaign involving transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
BofA Securities analysts upgraded the stock from Neutral to Buy and increased the price target to €65 from €59. It marks the first time in three years that the firm has issued a Buy recommendation for the stock, driven by the analyst’s perception of a margin turning point.
In the analysts’ view, AB InBev’s margins are at a critical juncture. They believe that the pressures on the cost of goods sold (COGS) have started to ease, the over $1 billion profit impact from Bud Light is now incorporated into the base, and the higher cost of doing business that had been weighing on margins in recent years is largely accounted for in the base figures.

Bumble Gains 3 percent Following Loop Capital Upgrade

0

Bumble (NASDAQ:BMBL) shares rose more than 3% on Friday after Loop Capital upgraded the company to Buy from Hold with a price target of $18.00. The analysts noted that it’s the first time they’ve issued a Buy rating on Bumble since they began covering the company two and a half years ago.
The analysts mentioned that the stock is currently trading near its 52-week low and has declined over 30% year-to-date, which they view as de-risked.
The analysts highlighted Bumble’s strong cash position, effective use of interest rate swaps, and free cash flow generation as factors that protect the company’s balance sheet. In their commentary, the analysts also pointed out that Bumble trades at a lower EV/EBITDA multiple compared to its competitor Match Group and that investor sentiment is bearish, potentially undervaluing Bumble’s growth prospects in the online dating industry.

Spotify Slashed to Neutral Ahead of Q3 Earnings

0

Monness Crespi Hardt analysts downgraded Spotify (NYSE:SPOT) from Buy to Neutral. The analysts explained that Spotify’s stock has seen significant growth this year, with a 95% increase. Given this substantial outperformance and growing concerns about potential market challenges, the analysts chose to step back from their Buy rating on Spotify.
The analysts mentioned that Spotify is set to release its third-quarter results on Oct 24, and although the company is well-positioned for long-term success with platform enhancements, expansion into the digital advertising market, audio innovations, and cost improvements, it faces stiff competition and operates with slim profit margins. Consequently, the firm believes that Spotify could be entering a more challenging phase.

Liberty, Sun fighting for control of series in Game 3

In the second quarter Tuesday, it appeared the Connecticut Sun would be returning home for an elimination game and a chance at securing a trip to the WNBA Finals.

Instead, the New York Liberty played with a season-on-the-line mentality to even the series and avoided consecutive losses for the first time this season.

The series shifts to Uncasville, Conn., on Friday for Game 3 of the best-of-five WNBA semifinals, with the Liberty and the Sun both hoping to move within one game of punching their ticket to the championship round.

The winner of Friday’s game can advance to the finals with a victory on Sunday afternoon in Connecticut.

The Sun opened the series with a smothering defensive performance in a 78-63 win on Sunday. Connecticut’s defense forced the Liberty to shoot a season-worst 33.8 percent and miss 19 of 27 3-point tries.

In Game 2 on Tuesday, the Sun raced to a 12-point lead with 7:10 remaining in the second quarter before the Liberty rallied for an 84-77 win by outscoring them 66-47 the rest of the way.

“We knew we had to win this game, to win on our home court,” Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. “We were just pushing each other. You could see a very connected team today. We didn’t want to lose.”

Sabrina Ionescu led the Liberty with 21 points after shooting 4-for-14 in the series opener. Betnijah Laney added 20 after a 1-for-9 showing in Game 1 and Courtney Vandersloot added 19.

That trio offset the struggles of league MVP Breanna Stewart, who finished with 11 points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field and is shooting 26.3 percent in the series.

In the semifinals for the fifth straight time, the Sun are hoping for a better showing from Alyssa Thomas. After losing a close MVP race to Stewart, Thomas made only 2 of 13 shots and was held to 10 points in Game 2.

Tiffany Hayes scored 30 points and DeWanna Bonner added 19 for Connecticut, which struggled against New York’s zone and gave up 11 straight points in the third after taking a four-point lead into halftime.

“They did what they’re supposed to do,” Sun coach Stephanie White said. “They’re where they are for a reason. They’ve got a lot of weapons, and it’s tough to contain them all each and every game.”
