MLB News: Marlins clinch wild-card berth by beating Pirates

Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and added an RBI single Saturday for the visiting Miami Marlins, who beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 to clinch a National League wild-card spot.

Josh Bell added a two-run double and sacrifice fly RBI, and Bryan De La Cruz an RBI single for the Marlins (84-76).

Miami reliever JT Chargois, used as an opener, pitched to three batters, giving up one hit and recording two outs.

A.J. Puk (7-5) gave up one run in two innings. Tanner Scott got his 12th save.

Endy Rodriguez and Bryan Reynolds each hit an RBI single for the Pirates (75-86).

Pittsburgh starter Quinn Priester (3-3) allowed four runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Jorge Soler doubled to the corner in left in the first and went to third on Bell’s infield single. An out later, Chisholm singled to right for a 1-0 lead.

Pittsburgh tied it in the second. Rodriguez singled to center. Liover Peguero singled to right. Ji Hwan Bae grounded into a forceout at second, with Rodriguez taking third. Nick Gonzales bunted, with pitcher George Soriano’s throwing error allowing Rodriguez to score.

Chisholm hit his 19th homer, to right-center, in the third inning, making it 2-1.

Pittsburgh tied it in the fifth. Ke’Bryan Hayes doubled to right. Two outs later, Rodriguez singled to center to score him.

In the sixth, Jon Berti walked, Garrett Hampson reached on a bunt single and Jacob Stallings bunted them up a base. That chased Priester for Dauri Moreta. Soler’s fielder’s choice drove in Berti, and Bell’s sacrifice fly brought Hampson home to increase it to 4-2.

Berti singled in the eighth and went to second on Hampson’s groundout. An out later, Soler was intentionally walked. Berti and Soler moved up on Jose Hernandez’s wild pitch, and both scored on Bell’s double to center for a 6-2 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Gonzales walked and later scored on Reynolds’ single to right to close it to 6-3.

De La Cruz singled home Chisholm, who had doubled, in the ninth.

TRUCK News: Brett Moffitt earns NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Brett Moffitt made it a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start to remember, pulling off an amazing three-wide move to the front during an overtime restart to claim the victory in Saturday’s Love’s RV Stop 250 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway – the former series champion’s first series race of the 2023 season ending in his first superspeedway victory.

It was a typically dramatic day on the 2.66-mile Talladega high banks, taking an overtime restart to settle the busy day of competition. Moffitt restarted on the front row alongside NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoff driver Christian Eckes following a 10-truck accident with two laps remaining in regulation time that forced the OT finish.

Eckes moved up track to block Moffitt from a run, but the veteran Moffitt deftly dropped his No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford to the middle of the track and pulled away to a .099-second victory over Playoff driver Ben Rhodes while Eckes lost momentum, drifted backwards and ended up 19th.

All eight Talladega truck Playoff races have now been won by non-Playoff drivers.

“It’s pretty awesome,” said the 31-year-old Moffitt, the 2018 series champion. “I’ve notably struggled on the superspeedways in the past and dreaded coming to them. But this was an all pressure-off situation that Front Row gave me to go out there and try to help a teammate. Obviously, that didn’t work out for that group. But to come here and have a shot at a win and to do it, is just amazing.

“Reminds me of the good ole days and I want to get back to doing this on a regular basis, so we’ll see what happens.”

It was an especially dramatic day for the eight Playoff drivers still vying for one of the four championship-eligible positions in the Nov. 3 finale. Among them, Rhodes was the top finishing driver – even though he did not lead a lap Saturday.

“This style of racing, you never know what to expect,” said Rhodes, driver of the No. 99 ThorSport Ford. “Just all in all, really happy we were able to finish second. We needed this for a points day. I think last year we were seven points out coming to homestead and we made it to the Championship Four. We’re eight out now so we did what we needed to do just one spot short. It would have been a real luxury to lock ourselves in today.”

TRICON Garage driver Dean Thompson finished third with Rackley W.A.R. Racing’s Chandler Smith and TRICON Garage’s Corey Heim, the championship leader, rounding out the top five.

There were only three Playoff drivers in the top 10 and that was a true effort for seventh place finisher Nick Sanchez. Although the Rev Racing driver dominated a lot of the afternoon, winning a stage and leading a race-best 25 laps on the day, he received a “pass through” penalty for changing lanes on a restart with 32 laps remaining that set him back in the field. He made his way forward again in the No. 2 Chevrolet only to be involved in the final multi-car accident that forced an overtime restart.

He still finished seventh, and having earned 19 stage points on the day while so many other Playoff drivers were also involved in incidents, he improved his position in the standings and will go into the next race – on Oct. 21 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He’s ranked fourth, three points ahead of fifth-place Grant Enfinger. The top four ranked drivers following the Homestead race advance to the Championship round, Nov. 3 at Phoenix Raceway.

The GMS Racing driver Enfinger was also among those Playoff competitors caught up in multiple accidents on the afternoon. He finished 13th. Niece Motorsport’s Carson Hocevar was 11th. ThorSport’s Ty Majeski was 21st.

Reigning series champion Zane Smith – race winner Moffitt’s teammate – had a rough afternoon from an incident on pit road to mechanical problems that set him back early. His truck hit his crew member Charles Plank coming into the team’s pit stall on the first stop of the day. Plank, a tire carrier, was okay and even finished out the race.

A lap later, however, Smith’s No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford suffered clutch problems and made multiple stops on pit road before going behind the wall for more extensive repairs.

He returned to the track in the closing laps and moved up two finishing positions in the race standings to salvage some points. He drops to last place in the championship standings, however, 36 points behind Sanchez on the cutoff line and needing to win at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“I feel terrible about that, so that wasn’t a great start,” Smith said of the pit road incident with his crew member.

“And then after that rolled off pit road down the backstretch, my clutch started slipping and it got worse and worse and worse. So fighting that and changing the clutch to get back out there.

“Just such a bummer. It’s a tough situation here. ‘’

Heim is the only Playoff driver who has already secured a position in the Championship Four thanks to his win at Bristol, Tenn. Hocevar leads the points standings – up 23 points on fifth place. Eckes is third and Sanchez fourth.

Enfinger (minus-3) is ranked fifth, followed by Rhodes (minus-5), Majeski (minus-19) and Smith (minus-36).

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs continue Oct. 21 at Homestead-Miami Speedway with the top four drivers in the standings after the race set to decide the Championship in the Nov. 3 season finale at Phoenix. Majeski is the defending Homestead-Miami race winner.

Following the race, there was an incident in the garage area between the 47-year-old former series champion Matt Crafton and the 22-year-old Rookie of the Year Sanchez that left Sanchez’s face bloodied. NASCAR is investigating the situation and will announce its finding and any penalties next week.

NAS News: Aric Almirola secures pole position at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola claimed the pole position for Sunday’s YellaWood 500 (2 p.m. ET, NBC, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) with a fast lap of 181.656 mph in the No. 10 SHR Ford.

The 39-year-old Tampa native bettered the speed of fellow Ford driver and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano by .004-thousandths of a second on Saturday afternoon.

Almirola’s SHR teammate Chase Briscoe was third fastest and will start on the second row alongside Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson, the top-qualifier among the 12 NASCAR Cup Series playoff drivers.

“You know these races come down to pit stops really, track position at the end, and so having a good pit stall, a clean-in and clean-out, stuff like that, that all matters,” said Almirola, who won this fall race on the 2.66-mile Talladega high banks in 2018 and gets first pit selection with this pole-winning effort Saturday, his sixth career pole.

“I’m just really proud of all the guys on this 10 team. We’ve been working so hard to put speed in these Smithfield Ford Mustangs, and (engine builder) Doug Yates obviously brings a ton of horsepower when we come to these type race tracks.

“It’s not a secret. This has been a tough year for us,” Almirola said as the four-car SHR organization is still racing for its first win of the season.

“So to show that kind of grit and resolve with everyone continuing to grind and work and bring fast race cars to the race track, that says a lot about our race team. Just really proud. The driver has a small part to do with it at these places, but a lot of it is just the speed built into the cars.”

Five of the 12 playoff drivers advanced to second-round qualifying on Saturday. Brad Keselowski, whose six wins at Talladega are most in the field, qualified fifth in his Roush Fenway Keselowski Ford. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron, who has already punched his ticket into the Round of 8 with a victory last week at Texas Motor Speedway, will start eighth. 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney round out the top 10 on Sunday’s starting grid.

Several other playoff drivers were just off that pace. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin, who leads the points standings, will roll off 12th. 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick was 13th-fastest in final qualifying, with Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Christopher Bell and Martin Truex Jr. 15th and 16th, respectively.

Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing’s Chris Buescher will start 24th, with Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch lining up his Chevrolet 25th. Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain — who finished runner-up at Texas last week — rounds out the current playoff dozen and will start 32nd.

Among those drivers who advanced to final qualifying and not competing in the playoff 12, NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Riley Herbst turned in an impressive result, qualifying a Rick Ware Racing car sixth — his best start in four NASCAR Cup Series races. Blaney’s Team Penske teammate Austin Cindric — the 2021 Daytona 500 winner — was seventh fastest.

Going into this second race of the three-race round of playoff competition, Hamlin holds a 22-point edge to ninth-place Wallace, who sits only two points behind Larson. Reddick is 10th, three points behind Larson followed by Blaney (-11) and Busch (-17).

“I think (starting position) definitely helps for the first stage, and hopefully we can get some stage points, but outside of the first stage, I don’t think it really matters a ton,” said Larson, who is competing for his first Talladega victory.

“I feel happy we made the final round, but we’ll see. I think it should be good.”

NOTEBOOK

BUSY WEEK FOR KYLE BUSCH

Kyle Busch suffered a disappointing DNF last week in the opening race of the 2023 NASCAR playoffs’ second round, the two-time series champion finds himself in last place among the 12 playoff drivers vying to advance to the Round of 8 following Sunday’s Talladega race and next week’s event at the Charlotte ROVAL.

Beyond his time behind the wheel, Busch announced major news this week in his job as a longtime NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team owner. He has sold his two-time championship Kyle Busch Motorsports team to Spire Motorsports. And although he will still compete in five races for the organization in 2024, Busch conceded Saturday at Talladega that the move was “obviously a super bittersweet moment,” thanking all the people who contributed to the company’s success.

Busch acknowledged he’s got some work to do at Talladega to regain the momentum he had earlier this season when he earned three victories in his first year driving the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet — the most wins he’s had since 2019. He’s a two-time Talladega winner, including this spring.

“I think you come in here stress-meter pegged, regardless of whether you’re 30 (points) to the good or 30 behind,” Busch said. “We obviously know in our situation we’re further behind. So you have to race. I think it’s been more sought out to just race these races and run normal and not to hang out in the back and try to wait for something to happen. Because with these cars and the way the race plays out, it’s so hard to make moves and make passes and get track position whenever you want it. You can’t.

“So you have to hold it when you got it and if you don’t have it, then you have to figure out how to fuel save so that you can short-pit guys and jump ‘em on pit road. There’s so many variables, you have to just race it out and don’t worry about it. Whatever happens, happens.”

BUBBA MAKING THE MOST OF HIS PLAYOFF DEBUT

Bubba Wallace has certainly been making the most of his NASCAR Cup Series playoff debut, advancing to the second round — leading the most laps and finishing third in the opening race of this round last week at Texas.

He enters Sunday’s YellaWood 500 ranked ninth in the standings, only a slight two points below the transfer line for the Round of 8. And Talladega is the site of his first ever NASCAR Cup Series victory in 2021.

Interestingly, Wallace said that although he’s grateful and motivated to be in the 2023 playoffs, he feels like his No. 23 23XI Racing team should have been there last year, too.

“We were capable of doing this last year,” Wallace said. “We have the right people, just going to have to put it all together. It has been a lot of work to get to this point, for sure. It’s super cool to see the results pay off for everybody on this team. I could see my guys fired up about showing up for this race, and we still have our name in the hat. We are progressing forward.

“We were the last seed to start the playoffs and the last seed coming into this round and we advanced. And we are now two points out of advancing again. It’s cool for them. I’m pumped for them, and I’m seeing them work extra hard to make sure we are doing everything right — that’s what motivates me.”

CHASTAIN CHAMPIONSHIP ROAD

Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain smiled and conceded his 2023 season has been “up, down, left and right” following a breakout year in 2022 when he advanced to the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Finale for the first time in his career. He ultimately finished as the runner-up to Joey Logano for the big trophy.

Last season, the 30-year-old Floridian earned his first two wins in the series — at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) road course and then on the Talladega Superspeedway big track — and a career best 15 top 5 finishes and 21 top 10 showings leading a career best 692 laps.

This season, he earned his first career pole position — at Nashville — and turned it into his only victory so far. He’s ranked sixth in the playoff standings with a 12-point cushion above the eighth-place cutoff position. Eight drivers advance to the penultimate stage of the playoffs following next week’s race at the Charlotte ROVAL.

Chastain has a pair of top-10 finishes in the opening four playoff races, with a best showing of runner-up just last week at Texas and insisting he had “no preconceived expectations.” Asked this week if he was concerned about his playoff hopes, Chastain looked calm.

“Not really. We just go race. That’s what we do,” Chastain said. “They give out the same amount of points in every stage and every race in every one of these rounds. If we finish the race and run up front we get more points, if not, we know we get less.

“We just go race, and that’s what’s so great about what our sport offers right now and what these playoffs offer. They give us a chance after three races. They give you a chance and then after three races if you make it, they give you another chance and no matter how it went, as long as you beat four guys. We’ll go see how many points we can scrape up.”

WTA News: WTA roundup: Ons Jabeur coasts to title at Ningbo Open

0

Top-seeded Ons Jabeur captured her fifth career WTA Tour title on Saturday following a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Russian teenager Diana Shnaider in the final of the Ningbo Open in China.

Jabeur, who is a three-time Grand Slam finalist, recorded 18 winners against 10 unforced errors to dispatch Shnaider in 78 minutes. The 29-year-old Tunisian claimed her second title of the season, with the first coming in Charleston in April.

“These are little steps to winning a Grand Slam final,” Jabeur said. “Playing a final here is more relaxed than playing a Grand Slam final, but I think it will help me gain confidence more, and to help me manage the pressure and stress.”

Jabeur also saved all three break points she faced from the 19-year-old Shnaider.

Toray Pan Pacific Open

Second-seeded Jessica Pegula posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece to advance to the final in Tokyo.

Pegula reached her fourth final this season after recording 21 winners and broke Sakkari’s serve on five of her eight break point opportunities.

She will bid for her second title of the season on Sunday against eighth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova, who notched a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (2), 6-3 win over fellow Russian countrywoman Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Kudermetova reached her second final of the season after winning the match that lasted over three hours.

ATP News: ATP Roundup: Daniil Medvedev advances to quarters in China

0

Daniil Medvedev fought off a challenge from Australian Alex de Minaur to win 7-6 (3), 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals of the China Open on Saturday in Beijing.

Medvedev was up 5-2 in the first set, but de Minaur rallied to win four straight games to force a tiebreaker, which went to the second-seeded Russian. With the victory, Medvedev won his 40th hard-court match of the season, which leads the tour.

When Medvedev meets Ugo Humbert of France in the quarterfinals, it will be Medvedev’s 13th quarters match in 18 tournaments this year.

Humbert upset another Russian, fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Also advancing Saturday was Nicolas Jarry of Chile, who defeated Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-3. Playing later was No. 8 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain.

Astana Open

Unseeded Dominic Thiem needed three before advancing to his first hard-court semifinal since 2022 with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (2) victory over Marcos Giron in Kazakhstan.

Thiem was No. 3 in the world in March 2020, but he has struggled to return to the form after a wrist injury in mid-2021. But now, he’ll compete in his 76th tour quarterfinal, meeting fellow Austrian Sebastian Ofner.

Ofner upset home-country favorite and third seed Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-2 to advance.

In other action, top seed Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands was pushed by Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro before winning 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-1. Griekspoor had 16 aces and won 86 percent (50 of 58) of the points on his first serve.

Next up for him is Sebastian Korda, who defeated Nuno Borges of Portugal 6-4, 7-6 (4) to advance.

MLS News: RSL score two in second half to beat Vancouver

0

Brayan Vera and Justen Glad each scored in the second half to rally Real Salt Lake to a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Sandy, Utah, on Saturday night.

Salt Lake (12-11-7, 43 points) beat Vancouver for the second time this season — rallying from a halftime deficit each time. It marked just their second win in their last six MLS regular-season matches.

Brian White opened the scoring with a goal in the 17th minute for the Whitecaps. It wasn’t enough for Vancouver (11-10-8, 41 points) to withstand RSL’s relentless second-half attack, however.

Salt Lake sits in fifth place in the Western Conference with four matches remaining. They are tied with Houston in points and trail Los Angeles FC and Seattle by two points. Vancouver is two points back of RSL.

With the game scoreless, Ryan Gauld sent a cross into White off a corner kick and he headed home the ball from the center of the box to put Vancouver in front 1-0.

Salt Lake created many more scoring chances before halftime. RSL had an 8-3 advantage on total shots and put four balls on frame. But the Utah club had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.

That all changed in the 47th minute. Vera blasted home a long free kick from outside the penalty area. He caught Yohei Takaoka out of position between the pipes and hooked the ball inside the near post for the equalizer.

Glad tacked on the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute. Andres Gomez served up a cross to him inside the 6-yard box. He stepped in front of a defender and headed the ball across the line. Glad came away with a bloody nose on the play.

Zac MacMath denied White a brace and an equalizer in the 82nd minute. White headed a cross from Gauld toward the left post. MacMath swatted the ball off the post and stopped it from crossing the line.

MLS News: Revolution clinch playoff berth after 2-2 draw with Fire

0

Tomas Chancalay and Carles Gil scored for the New England Revolution, while Brian Gutierrez and Gaston Gimenez replied for host Chicago Fire as the two sides played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Soldier Field.

With D.C. United’s 5-3 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, New England officially clinched a playoff berth. The point earned in the draw moves Chicago two points back of the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.

New England (13-6-10, 49 points) is unbeaten in its past 10 meetings with Chicago, posting a 3-0-7 record against the Fire dating back to the 2019 season. Chicago (8-12-10, 34 points) saw its overall winless streak stretch to seven straight MLS regular-season matches (0-5-2), with its last victory coming against Toronto FC on July 15.

Gimenez gave Chicago its first lead of the match in the 54th minute, beating Earl Edwards Jr. with a strike from the edge of the box for his first goal of the season.

The Revs responded five minutes later as Gil’s shot from just outside the area deflected off Chicago defender Miguel Navarro past Chris Brady, for his team-leading ninth of the season.

Chancalay and Gutierrez exchanged goals a minute apart in the opening 45.

Taulia Tagovailoa passed for 223 yards and three touchdowns and undefeated Maryland took advantage of turnovers to secure a 31-9 win over Michigan State on Saturday in East Lansing, Mich.

Tagovailoa also scored a rushing touchdown for Maryland (4-0, 1-0) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Spartans starting quarterback Noah Kim completed 18 of 33 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown. He was also picked off twice. The Spartans committed five turnovers.

Michigan State (2-2) has lost twice since head coach Mel Tucker was suspended amid sexual harassment allegations.

The Spartans moved all the way to the Terrapins’ 1-yard line on their next possession but on fourth down, Nate Carter (97 yards) was stopped for a 4-yard loss by Fa’Najae Gotay.

Maryland then used an 11-play drive to take a two-touchdown lead. Colby McDonald had a 25-yard run to set up a 12-yard scoring pass from Tagovailoa to Tyrese Chambers.

The Terrapins took advantage of another Spartans giveaway for their next touchdown. Carter fumbled and Donnell Brown recovered at the Spartans’ 32-yard line. Tagovailoa’s 22-yard pass to Octavian Smith Jr. set up the quarterback’s 1-yard scoring plunge.
