NHL News: Flames assistant GM Chris Snow dies after ALS battle

Calgary Flames assistant general manager Chris Snow died Saturday after waging a four-year battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 42.

He went into cardiac arrest on Tuesday and suffered a catastrophic brain injury due to a lack of oxygen. He had been on life support since Thursday, giving doctors time to arrange for organ donation.

“Today we hugged Chris for the last time and said goodbye as he went to give four people the gift of life by donating his kidneys, liver and lungs,” his widow, Kelsie Snow, tweeted. “We are deeply broken and deeply proud. In life and in death, Chris never stopped giving. We walk forward with his light guiding us.”

The Snows shared two children, Cohen and Willa.

Boston.com, in an article earlier this year about Snow, said that his father, two uncles and a cousin all died of ALS, with a specific mutation running through the family. He was diagnosed in June 2019 and given a year to live.

He continued to work for the Flames this year, despite increasing challenges with his health and time spent in the hospital.

“Chris was my friend. He taught us all so much by how he confronted ALS with grace, positivity, and hope,” Flames general manager Craig Conroy said. “Chris never complained or ever showed us that he had a bad day, and while there may have been many, he continued to perform his job to a very high standard.

“Through his journey Chris became a true inspiration for all who knew him and an incredible advocate for everyone affected by ALS. He fought with courage and determination for every day he had with Kelsie, Cohen and Willa, making countless memories with them over these past five years.

“We will never replace a person like Chris; we simply pay tribute to him by moving forward with the same passion that he brought to his life each day.”

The Snows went public with his ALS fight in January 2020 and launched an effort to raise at least a half-million dollars for research into ALS.

The Flames said the Snowy Strong campaign has raised more than $575,000 to support ALS research and new treatments.

In a statement, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman paid tribute to Snow.

“The Snows’ willingness to share the trials and triumphs of Chris’s lengthy ALS journey has inspired so many and profoundly increased awareness of the need to find a cure for this debilitating disease,” Bettman said. “The NHL sends its most sincere condolences to the Snow family, the Calgary Flames organization and all who were touched by this special person.”

A former sportswriter, Snow transitioned to the NHL years ago. He was the director of hockey operations for the Minnesota Wild from 2006-10, then joined the Flames as director of hockey analysis in 2011. He was promoted to assistant general manager in September 2019.

PGA News: Rory McIlroy channels anger at Joe LaCava into Ryder Cup personal best

0

Rory McIlroy was already on pace to set a new personal-best Ryder Cup record this weekend at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. Then the U.S. team poured gasoline on his inner fire.

McIlroy made it clear Sunday that his anger had turned into motivation as he finished the week 4-1-0 to help Team Europe stamp out the Americans’ faint hopes and win the 44th Ryder Cup, 16 1/2-11 1/2.

The Northern Irishman was more than a bit cross with Joe LaCava, the caddie for Patrick Cantlay, when LaCava got in McIlroy’s putting line while celebrating on the 18th green Saturday.

TV cameras in Rome then captured McIlroy shouting at someone off-screen in the parking lot Saturday evening while Ireland’s Shane Lowry had to restrain him and push him into their car.

“This can’t happen. This can’t happen. It’s a (expletive) disgrace,” McIlroy said, presumably to LaCava. Another American caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, was nearby.

NBC Sports reported Sunday morning that McIlroy and LaCava met before Sunday’s singles matches began to hash out their differences, but McIlroy denied it.

After McIlroy defeated Sam Burns 3 and 1, he was asked in his post-match interview on NBC whether he felt better after “clearing the air with Joe.” McIlroy responded with a blank stare.

“I haven’t met Joe,” McIlroy said, twice.

“I was focused. I was very focused. I let it fuel me,” he continued. “I didn’t let it take way from what’s been a fantastic week. I used that little incident last night to my advantage.”

The grudge was clearly still fresh when McIlroy spoke to BBC Radio after beating Burns.

“Walking off 18 (Saturday) was probably the angriest I’ve ever been in my career,” McIlroy said. “I said it to the U.S. guys, I thought it was disgraceful what went on. I made that clear.

“But again, I needed to calm myself down because I could’ve let it, you know, sort of bring me down the wrong path and I didn’t. I let it focus me.”

McIlroy had never won more than three points at a Ryder Cup, and he had a career-worst record of 1-3-0 in 2021 when the U.S. routed Team Europe 19-9.

The four-time major champion made sure Saturday’s four-ball loss to Cantlay and Wyndham Clark would be his only blotch of the week. He won four of his first seven holes Sunday against Burns, with birdies on three, and led 4 up through 11 holes before sealing the deal with a 13-foot birdie at the par-3 17th.

LaCava was Tiger Woods’ longtime caddie before Woods granted him permission to take up Cantlay’s bag full-time back in May.

When Cantlay sank a 43-foot birdie putt at No. 18 in the final match Saturday, his teammates celebrated by waving their hats in the air — a reference to Cantlay’s controversial decision not to sport the U.S. hat this week.

LaCava then joined in on the party, even though McIlroy and teammate Matt Fitzpatrick of England still had putts to tie the hole. After words were exchanged on the green, both missed.

PGA News: Team Europe reclaims Ryder Cup in Rome

0

When the Ryder Cup comes to Europe, the home team has been unbeatable.

Tommy Fleetwood of England landed the decisive blow Sunday afternoon for Team Europe to finally vanquish the United States team and win the 44th Ryder Cup 16 1/2-11 1/2 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club outside Rome.

Europe has claimed eight of the last 11 Ryder Cups, as the Americans failed to end a Ryder Cup road drought that dates to 1993.

“Proud, proud, proud moment for me. They play for more than themselves, they play together,” emotional Team Europe captain Luke Donald said in a post-match TV interview.

Team Europe led 10 1/2-5 1/2 entering Sunday’s 12 singles matches needing four points to win, with the U.S. team required to get 8 1/2 points to retain the cup.

After falling behind 14-7 Sunday, the U.S. had to sweep the final seven matches of the day. Brooks Koepka finished off Swedish rookie Ludvig Aberg 3 and 2 and Max Homa made a massive decision at the 18th hole that paid off to preserve a 1-up win over Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick.

Xander Schauffele defeated Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard 3 and 2, but the Americans’ faint hopes fell apart when Rickie Fowler, 1 down to Fleetwood, cut his drive into the water at the short par-4 16th.

Fleetwood’s ensuing drive rolled to 23 feet from the flagstick. His eagle putt was short, but Fowler conceded the birdie, ensuring Europe would gain at least half a point from the match. Fleetwood made it official on the next hole, winning 3 and 1 for Europe’s 15th point.

“I didn’t think it was going to go down to the back end,” Fleetwood said. “Just to have played a part in it all this week, in particular today. I wasn’t really planning on it coming down to us but I always had it in my mind. … It was pretty nervy coming down to the last few.”

The Americans needed a record comeback Sunday to retain the cup; the largest Sunday rally in Ryder Cup history belongs to the 1999 U.S. team, from four points down.

“I think the European team played phenomenal golf. I think it truly is that simple. I think my guys showed true heart, true grit,” U.S. captain Zach Johnson said post-match, choking up with emotion. “I’m honored to represent my country. … I’ll do the interviews, I’ll do the media, I’ll take the burden. I’ll take my 12 any Cup.”

Europe’s “big three” — Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, Jon Rahm of Spain and Viktor Hovland of Norway — combined to earn 2 1/2 points early in the day. Tyrrell Hatton of England beat Brian Harman 3 and 2 to bring Europe to 14 points before the Americans found ways to stay afloat.

Homa was 1 up on Fitzpatrick at the par-5 18th when both players missed to the right of the green on their second shots. While Fitzpatrick chipped on, Homa’s ball was so buried in the tall, snaking rough that he took an unplayable lie and yielded a penalty stroke.

It was the right decision. Homa chipped it to 7 1/2 feet with his fourth shot, Fitzpatrick missed a birdie putt that would have won the cup and Homa converted the must-have par to preserve the full U.S. point.

“(Caddie) Joe Greiner’s the brains, I just swing it,” said Homa, who led the U.S. this week with a 3-1-1 record. “That was an awful break. I don’t know how (his second shot) didn’t get into the bunker, and I was frustrated, my head was spinning. (Greiner) said, ‘We’re gonna take an unplayable here, you’re gonna chip it down to 10 feet and you’re gonna make it.'”

McIlroy led all players in the 2023 event, winning four of a possible five points. He cruised past Sam Burns 3 and 1 after Rahm had tied Scottie Scheffler in a back-and-forth match.

“I was so disappointed after Whistling Straits. We all were,” McIlroy said, referencing the Americans’ 19-9 win in 2021. “And we wanted to come here to Rome this year and redeem ourselves a bit. We’ve got some fresh blood on the team that I think has worked really, really well.”

Hovland scored the first point of the day by soundly defeating Collin Morikawa 4 and 3. Hovland went 3-1-1 for the competition, the only European player beside McIlroy (4-1-0) to play all five sessions this weekend.

Cantlay staved off determined Englishman Justin Rose 2 and 1 for the Americans’ first full point of the day. Cantlay denied a report from Sky Sports the previous day that the U.S. team room was “fractured” as Cantlay declined to wear the team’s hat in protest of not getting paid for his services this week.

“I just try to use it as fuel,” Cantlay said of the adversity in Rome. “You know, you can take all that energy and turn it into focus and turn it into good adrenaline. That’s what I tried to do this week.”

Cantlay also made a 43-foot birdie putt Saturday to win his four-ball match. His efforts were not enough to fell a European side led by Englishman Donald, who replaced Henrik Stenson of Sweden as captain 14 months before the competition due to Stenson joining LIV Golf.

“All of Team Europe, we obviously play for each other and that’s such a massive strength for us and our unity,” Fleetwood said. “And one step above that is Luke, and we all wanted to do it for him.”

LPGA News: Rookie Hae Ran Ryu wins wire-to-wire at NW Arkansas

0

South Korean Hae Ran Ryu shot a 5-under 66 to complete a wire-to-wire win at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship on Sunday in Rogers, Ark.

Ryu finished the week at Pinnacle Country Club 19-under 194, three shots better than Sweden’s Linnea Strom, who had a final-round 64. Tied for third at 15 under were Bianca Pagdanganan of the Philippines (64 on Sunday), Yuna Nishimura of Japan (68) and South Korea’s Sei Young Kim (66) and Jenny Shin (67).

Ryu had won five times on the LPGA of Korea, but Sunday marked the 22-year-old tour rookie’s first LPGA title.

“Before the season, I wanted to get Rookie of the Year,” Ryu told the Golf Channel broadcast. “Now … I’m a winner on the LPGA Tour and I want to get Rookie of the Year, and so now it’s so meaningful.”

After shooting consecutive rounds of 64 to build a two-stroke lead entering the final round, Ryu had a birdie and two bogeys in her first five holes on Sunday.

She steadied herself with four straight pars before birdieing Nos. 10 and 12 to move into a tie for the lead. The big move came at the par-5 14th, when Ryu nearly holed her second shot and had just 3 feet for eagle.

“First nine hole, I felt so bad,” said Ryu, who added birdies at Nos. 16 and 18. “… But after the ninth hole, I focus (on) my iron distance and I tried more anchoring my swing, and I made so many birdie.”

Strom tallied five birdies, one eagle and no bogeys to card her best score of the week and charge up the leaderboard. Her second-place finish is the best result of her LPGA career.

“I tried not to look at (the leaderboard), but I happened to see — when we were walking from 14 to 15, I happened to see that 14 under was in a good position at that time,” Strom said.

“But then I know there is a few good birdie holes coming in with the tee moved up on 14 and downwind on 18, so I think I just tried to not focus on it and just try to make as many birdies as I could and see what happens.”

Hannah Green of Australia (69) placed seventh at 14 under. Yealimi Noh (66) and Lexi Thompson (66) tied for eighth at 13 under.

NFL News: Justin Jefferson, Vikings rally past Panthers for first win

Justin Jefferson caught six passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns, and the visiting Minnesota Vikings rallied for a 21-13 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte.

Kirk Cousins completed 12 of 19 passes for 139 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Minnesota (1-3). Alexander Mattison led the team with 95 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Safety Sam Franklin Jr. had a 99-yard interception return for the Panthers’ lone touchdown. Bryce Young completed 25 of 32 passes for 204 yards for Carolina (0-4).

The Vikings scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to secure their first win.

Minnesota relied on its defense to take its first lead with 3:58 left in the third quarter. Harrison Smith rushed in on a safety blitz, which caused Young to fumble. Linebacker D.J. Wonnum did the rest with a 51-yard scoop and score to put the Vikings ahead 14-13.

The Vikings increased their lead to 21-13 as time expired in the third quarter. Jefferson made a leaping catch down the left side of the field for a 30-yard touchdown, which marked his second score of the game and his third of the season.

Carolina marched into the red zone in the final two minutes as it tried to force overtime. Smith sealed the outcome on another safety blitz when he sacked Young on fourth-and-goal to force a turnover on downs.

The Panthers struck first with a defensive touchdown. Cousins tried to fire a pass to wideout K.J. Osborn near the front of the end zone, and Franklin stepped in front of it for his first career interception and sprinted the length of the field.

Carolina made it 10-0 on a 26-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro early in the second quarter.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard on the next possession. Cousins rolled to his right and found Jefferson in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.

Another Panthers interception, this time by linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill, helped to set up a field goal at the end of the half. Pineiro was good from 56 yards to make it 13-7.

NFL News: Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs help Bills blow past Dolphins

Josh Allen threw for four touchdowns, three of which went to Stefon Diggs, as the Buffalo Bills crushed the Miami Dolphins 48-20 on Sunday in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Allen completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards while also rushing for a score. Diggs finished with six catches for 120 yards for Buffalo (3-1), which racked up 414 yards of total offense.

One week after totaling four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving), Miami rookie De’Von Achane ran for two more TDs and 101 yards on just eight carries.

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 282 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 25-for-35 passing for the Dolphins (3-1), who were held in check after scoring 70 points against the Denver Broncos in Week 3.

Tagovailoa’s 11-yard scoring strike to Braxton Berrios with 9:30 left in the third quarter pulled Miami within 31-20. The Dolphins then failed a two-point conversion, and the Bills took command of the game from there.

Buffalo rifled off 17 unanswered points, getting Tyler Bass’ 33-yard field goal and Diggs’ 13-yard TD catch before Allen scampered into the end zone from 11 yards out with 14:55 left in the contest.

Diggs made an incredible 55-yard catch-and-run touchdown, in which he spun out of the grasp of a pair of defenders and ran down the left sideline for a 28-14 lead with 2:58 left in the first half.

Bass added a 53-yard field goal just more than a minute later to send the Bills into the break with a 31-14 advantage.

After Allen capped the opening drive of the game with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Davis, Miami answered with a seven-play, 77-yard drive that ended with Achane’s 3-yard rushing score.

James Cook then put Buffalo up 14-7 with 1:10 left in the first quarter, plunging into the end zone from the 1.

Achane scored again, this time on a 10-yard run, to make it 14-14 with 12:47 remaining in the second quarter.

Four plays after a 43-yard defensive pass interference penalty, Allen found Diggs for an 11-yard TD to put Buffalo back in front.

NFL News: Rams WR Puka Nacua sets rookie receiving records

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua made his 31st catch of the season on the first play of the game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, setting the record for the most catches by a rookie in his first four games.

Nacua finished the day with nine catches for 163 yards, ending the game with his first career touchdown reception on a 22-yard play in overtime to give the Rams a 29-23 victory after they blew a 23-point lead.

Nacua’s totals of 39 catches and 501 yards are the most for any NFL player through their first four career games.

Nacua set the four-game reception record when he caught a 26-yard pass over the middle from Matthew Stafford. The pass was high, but Nacua reached for it, then tipped the ball to himself to secure the catch.

The play helped to set up a touchdown run by Kyren Williams for a 7-0 Rams lead.

Nacua, 22, was taken by the Rams out of BYU in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Nacua’s play has helped the Rams fill the void left by the injury absence of All-Pro Cooper Kupp (hamstring), who could be in line to return next week at home against the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL News: Saints QB Derek Carr active vs. Buccaneers

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr will be active for their home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Carr was listed as questionable following the AC joint sprain he sustained in last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. He participated in practice on Friday, the same day his coach commented on his availability.

“Can he go out and execute his job?” New Orleans coach Dennis Allen said. “That’s really all this is.”

Multiple media outlets reported that the Saints (2-1) have been preparing for Carr to start, barring any setbacks Sunday. If Carr is unable to go, Jameis Winston will start in his place against the Buccaneers (2-1).

In last Sunday’s 18-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Carr landed hard on his right shoulder when he was sacked by linebacker Rashan Gary on a third-down play with 10:39 left in the third quarter.

Carr completed 13 of 18 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Saints led 17-0 when Carr was hurt before Green Bay scored 18 unanswered points.

Winston completed 10 of 16 passes for 101 yards.

The Saints’ listed inactives for Sunday included cornerback Paulson Adebo, safety Jordan Howden, quarterback Jake Luton, tight end Foster Moreau, wide receiver A.T. Perry, defensive end Kyle Phillips and guard Cesar Ruiz.

The Buccaneers listed cornerback Jamel Dean, linebacker SirVocea Dennis, tight end Payne Durham, defensive lineman Calijah Kancey, cornerback Derrek Pitts, tackle Brandon Walton and linebacker Markees Watts as inactive.

NFL News: Bears WR Chase Claypool inactive vs. Broncos

Chicago Bears wide receiver Chase Claypool was made a healthy scratch prior to Sunday’s game against the visiting Denver Broncos.

The move comes on the heels of Claypool venting his frustration with how he is being used in the offense.

Claypool, acquired in a trade last November with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has just four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. He is playing in the final season of his rookie contract.

The 2020 second-round pick has 171 catches for 2,235 yards and 13 touchdowns in 49 games (32 starts) with the Steelers and Bears.

Bears wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown was listed as active for the first time this season.

In addition to Claypool, the Bears (0-3) made the following players inactive for Sunday’s game: running back D’Onta Foreman, defensive backs Eddie Jackson and Jaylon Johnson and quarterback Nathan Peterman.

As for the Broncos (0-3), safeties Justin Simmons and JL Skinner, linebackers Frank Clark and Josey Jewell, defensive end Ronnie Perkins, defensive tackle Mike Purcell and center Alex Forsyth were ruled inactive.

NFL News: Report: Rookie QB Aidan O’Connell to start for Raiders

Rookie Aidan O’Connell will start at quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, ESPN reported.

He’ll be filling in for veteran starter Jimmy Garoppolo, who is in the concussion protocol and has been ruled out.

The Raiders (1-2) opted for O’Connell over 37-year-old Brian Hoyer, who has not started and won a game since Oct. 2, 2016, as a member of the Chicago Bears.

O’Connell will be making his NFL regular-season debut. In the preseason, he threw for 482 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

He was a fourth-round pick (No. 135 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. In four seasons at Purdue, he completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 9,219 yards and 65 touchdowns against 30 interceptions.

The Raiders signed Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.75 million contract in the offseason to replace longtime starter Derek Carr.

Las Vegas also ruled cornerback Nate Hobbs out for Sunday. For the Chargers, center Corey Linsley is out due to an illness.
