NFL News: Trevor Lawrence efficient as Jaguars down Falcons in London

The Jacksonville Jaguars rolled to a 23-7 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in London behind quarterback Trevor Lawrence and a 61-yard pick-six by defensive back Darious Williams.

Lawrence completed 23 of 30 passes for 207 yards and a score. He also added 42 yards on the ground.

For his part, Williams added five tackles in addition to that interception return for a score, which put the Jaguars up 17-0 with less than five minutes to play in the first half.

Wideout Christian Kirk led Jacksonville (2-2) in receptions (eight) and yards (84). Tight end Evan Engram added seven receptions for 59 yards, while receiver Calvin Ridley tallied two receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown against his former team. Tailback Travis Etienne chipped in 55 yards on 20 carries.

Jaguars’ kicker Brandon McManus made three field goals, which included a 56-yarder.

Falcons rookie running back Bijan Robinson had 14 carries for 105 yards and added five receptions for 32 yards. After throwing two first-half interceptions, Atlanta quarterback Desmond Ridder settled down and finished with 191 passing yards and a touchdown.

Tight end Jonnu Smith had six receptions for 95 yards, while wideout Drake London added three receptions for 28 yards and a score for Atlanta (2-2).

Jacksonville took a 7-0 lead with 5:44 to play in the first quarter when Lawrence connected with Ridley on a 30-yard touchdown pass. The scoring reception capped an eight-play, 72-yard scoring march that took 3:49 off the clock. A key fourth-and-1 conversion from Lawrence to Kirk at the Atlanta 38-yard line kept the drive alive.

The Jaguars increased their lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter when McManus nailed a 56-yard field goal. A 30-yard reception by Kirk moved Jacksonville inside Falcons territory to set up the score.

After Atlanta drove to the Jacksonville 45-yard line late in the second quarter, Williams picked off Ridder and scooted 61 yards for a pick-six to put the Jaguars up 17-0.

On the Falcons’ ensuing possession, Ridder was intercepted by safety Andre Cisco, but the Jaguars failed to score on a fourth-and-1 at the Atlanta 7-yard line as Lawrence was sacked.

On its opening possession of the second half, Atlanta cut Jacksonville’s lead to 17-7 when Ridder hooked up with London for a 15-yard touchdown pass on third-and-9. The scoring reception capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive that took just 3:22 off the clock.

A McManus 43-yard field goal put the Jaguars up 20-7 early in the fourth quarter. He added a 38-yard field goal with just under two minutes to play to cap the scoring.

NFL News: Browns’ Dorian Thompson-Robinson to start, Deshaun Watson out

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson will make his first career start on Sunday at Baltimore after Deshaun Watson was ruled inactive due to a sore right shoulder.

Watson was questionable all week and hoped to get the green light after a pregame workout, leaving head coach Kevin Stefanski to delay the decision on his starting quarterback until gameday.

Also on Sunday, tight end David Njoku was active despite sustaining burn injuries to his face and arm during a household accident.

Multiple media outlets reported the burns were caused after Njoku attempted to light a fire pit in his backyard. He was added to the injury report as questionable after the accident.

Largely an observer at Friday’s practice, Watson still claimed he would be ready to lead the Browns (2-1) against the Ravens (2-1).

Thompson-Robinson took more than 90 percent of the first-team reps on Thursday and Friday. He said he would be ready if his number is called.

“I’m ready for it. Very confident in my preparation for it the week,” Thompson-Robinson said.

Watson has four touchdown passes, two interceptions and two fumbles lost in three games this season.

Thompson-Robinson completed 63.8 percent of his passes (37 of 58) with two touchdown passes and had 69 rushing yards in the preseason.

The Browns drafted Thompson-Robinson with the 140th overall pick in the 2023 draft. He was a five-year starter at UCLA.

Njoku, 27, has 10 catches for 92 yards in three games this season.

In 82 career games (53 starts), he has 216 receptions for 2,474 yards and 19 touchdowns since being selected by the Browns with the 29th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

In addition to Watson, the Browns ruled out the following players: cornerback Kahlef Hailassie, safety Ronnie Hickman, center Luke Wypler, defensive end Isaiah McGuire, defensive tackle Siaki Ika and tight end Zaire Mitchell-Paden.

As for the Ravens, they listed wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Rashod Bateman, safety Marcus Williams, cornerback Marlon Humphrey, tackle Ronnie Stanley and linebacker Odafe Oweh as inactive. Quarterback Josh Johnson was listed as the third quarterback.

Liberty knock out Sun, set up WNBA Finals showdown vs. Aces

Jonquel Jones burned her old team with 25 points and 15 rebounds as the New York Liberty set up a super-team WNBA Finals with the Las Vegas Aces by rallying for an 87-84 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday in Uncasville, Conn.

The Liberty trailed by as many as 10 in Game 4 before beating the Sun to take their semifinal series three games to one.

Jones, who joined league Most Valuable Player Breanna Stewart and veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot as high-profile New York acquisitions in the offseason, made 5 of 6 free throws in the last minute to boost the Liberty into the best-of-five finals, which start Oct. 8 in Las Vegas.

Stewart added 27 points, including a pair of foul shots with 6.1 seconds left for a three-point lead. Connecticut penetrated the lane on its final possession and couldn’t squeeze off the tying 3 it needed to force overtime.

Betnijah Laney scored 21 for New York, which reached the finals for the first time in 21 years.

The Liberty trailed 75-74 with 2:53 left after DiJonai Carrington made a foul shot but Stewart answered with a 3-pointer at the 2:08 mark to give them the lead for good.

Alyssa Thomas led the Sun with 17 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists. Tiffany Hayes added 15 and Carrington scored 14 off the bench.

After allowing 37 points in the first quarter of its Game 3 loss Friday night, Connecticut offered considerably more resistance in this first quarter of Game 4. The Sun leaned on Thomas to take a 23-19 lead to the second quarter as she finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.

Connecticut pushed its lead to 33-23 at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter when Thomas set up Hayes for a 3-pointer. New York made its run shortly thereafter, scoring the final six points of the quarter and taking a 45-44 halftime lead on Sabrina Ionescu’s layup.

The Liberty led by 11 on two occasions late in the third quarter as Jones heated up for seven quick points, including a 3-pointer. Jones then fed Laney for a layup that made the margin 66-58 going to the fourth period.

Celtics acquire All-Star G Jrue Holiday from Blazers

The Boston Celtics acquired All-Star guard Jrue Holiday from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for center Robert Williams, guard Malcolm Brogdon and multiple draft picks on Sunday.

The draft picks are a 2024 first-rounder from the Golden State Warriors and a 2029 unprotected first-rounder from Boston.

The new deal comes in the wake of Portland acquiring Holiday as part of the three-team deal that sent Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

Holiday, 33, is a two-time All-Star who helped lead the Bucks to their second ever NBA championship in 2021 following his acquisition from the New Orleans Pelicans. Over 14 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans and Milwaukee, he has averaged 16.4 points and 6.5 assists.

He averaged 19.3 points, 7.4 assists and a career-best 5.1 rebounds in 67 games (65 starts) last season with the Bucks.

The veteran guard has a $36.8 million cap hit in the final guaranteed season of a four-year, $135 million contract with a player option for 2024-25. ESPN reported that Boston would like to extend his deal.

Williams, 25, has spent his entire career in Boston since being selected by the Celtics in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft.

He averaged 8.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks during his fifth season in 2022-23. For his career, Williams has averages of 7.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks over 209 games (97 starts).

Brogdon, 30, played in 67 games last season and earned NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors after averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He had zero starts after previously starting 258 games of his 333 games over six seasons with Milwaukee (2016-19) and the Indiana Pacers (2019-22).

Brogdon, the Rookie of the Year with the Bucks in 2016-17, has career averages of 15.4 points, 4.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds.

NAS News: Ryan Blaney ekes out win at Talladega

Ryan Blaney made a last-lap pass of Kevin Harvick in a wild finish to win the YellaWood 500 NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama.

The two drivers were door-to-door taking the white flag, but Harvick — driving his final race at the massive track — cleared the Team Penske driver’s No. 12 Ford. However, Blaney fought back down the backstretch, saw an opening underneath and regained the lead.

As the field crashed behind him coming to the checkered flag, Blaney held off the 47-year-old Harvick by 0.012 seconds for his second win of 2023 to advance to the Round of 8 postseason.

William Byron, Denny Hamlin and Corey LaJoie rounded out the top-five finishers in the four-caution race.

Seven of the past eight races at Talladega have been won on a pass on the final circuit.

Aric Almirola, the 2018 Fall winner on the 2.66-mile high-banked Alabama superspeedway, set the pole-winning lap, but reigning Cup champion Joey Logano — eliminated from the postseason — soon assumed the point around the treacherous, high-speed layout.

Needing playoff bonus points, Blaney put his No. 12 up front and grabbed 10 of them by winning the 60-lap Stage 1. However, fellow title-hopeful driver Ross Chastain in the middle lane bounced off cars and hit the Turn 3 wall after Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ran out of gas in front of him.

Kyle Busch also made some contact, banging against Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet as he went underneath Stenhouse, while playoff driver Christopher Bell received front-end damage on his No. 20 Toyota while hitting Chastain, who finished in last.

After a late round of pit stops in Stage 2, Byron held the lead in the final laps, but he lost the top spot on the final circuit as Austin Dillon pulled out and helped push Brad Keselowski’s No. 6 Ford to the point to win the most stage points.

With 27 laps to go, Keselowski turned Carson Hocevar’s No. 42 in the tri-oval, causing a melee that collected Keselowski, Ty Gibbs, Dillon, AJ Allmendinger and Harrison Burton and created a 10-minute red-flag period.

Celebrity actor and singer Tyrese Gibson filed a lawsuit against Home Depot claiming that a California store racially profiled the actor and his friend. Home Depot had said that the Fast and Furious actor made misleading claims in the suit. It has provided surveillance video in court to back its claims.

On Thursday, TMZ reported that it reviewed the documents that were filed by Home Depot. The surveillance footage from the retailer’s store shows that the claims made by Tyrese Gibson are contradictory. The documents say that the singer took several items to the cash register and these items were scanned.

Tyrese did not pay for the items and returned 25 minutes later. The cashier voided the items to be able to continue to serve other customers. Home Depot said that Gibson needed to be present to show his identification and footage showed the cashier asking him to do so.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

Gibson returned to the Home Depot store and had a tense discussion with workers from the store according to Home Depot.

On February 11, the How You Gonna Act Like That singer visited a Home Depot store in West Hills, California. He said that he asked his two employees to complete his purchase as fans began to recognize him so he left the store.

Celebrity Tyrese Gibson claimed that a cashier told him that it was alright for his workers to use his credit card and he could wait outside. However, the cashier insisted that he should show his ID.

Home Depot contradicted this and showed that Gibson did not speak to any cashier before he left the store.

In August, celebrity Tyrese Gibson filed a $1 million lawsuit against Home Depot for compensatory damages from the home improvement store.

On Thursday, Home Depot filed footage showing that the claims in the lawsuit by Tyrese Gibson were contradictory to what their surveillance video showed.

Tyrese’s legal team did not respond when the outlet contacted them.

MLS News: Tomas Aviles scores late as Inter Miami earns draw with NYCFC

0

Tomas Aviles scored a crucial tying goal late in second-half stoppage time and Inter Miami CF rallied for a 1-1 draw against visiting New York City Football Club Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Aviles got his first career MLS goal five minutes into the eight-minute extra time by finishing off a brilliant sequence following a corner kick. With his back to the net, Aviles gained possession of a corner kick from Robert Taylor and sent a header from the center of the box into the bottom right corner.

Miami (9-15-6 33 points) moved within four points of Montreal for the ninth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It gained the point on a night when Lionel Messi was held out because of a leg injury. Miami did not announce the severity of the injury.

Aviles scored after being beaten by NYCFC’s Santiago Rodriguez in the 77th minute.

Rodriguez scored his first MLS goal since May 6 after a foul by Miami’s Noah Allen resulted in a free kick for Andres Jasson. Jasson perfectly placed his free kick to Rodriguez, who began his move slightly above the center of the box and eluded Aviles and Jean Mota before sending a right-footed shot from a tough angle into the top right corner.

NYCFC dropped to 1-7-8 on the road and saw its unbeaten streak reach six games (4-0-2). By blowing the late lead, NYCFC (8-10-14, 38 points) only moved one point ahead of Montreal into eighth place.

Miami goalie Drake Callender made two saves and withstood NYCFC attempting 10 shots.

New York’s Matt Freese did not make any saves as Miami attempted 12 shots including a shot in the final minute of stoppage time that clanged off the post and landed just in front of the goal line.

Following a rain delay of nearly 60 minutes, a competitive first half saw plenty of chances for NYCFC to score, especially by Monsef Bakrar.

He missed the net twice in a two-minute span 15 minutes into the match. Then in the 26th, his shot eluded the open net after getting a pass from Andres Perea.

In the 32nd, Bakrar missed from outside the box after Perea misfired from close range and then was unable to finish off a breakaway in the 51st two minutes after Allen missed the net twice.

MLS News: Dynamo, FC Dallas settle for draw in key conference match

0

Houston Dynamo FC and FC Dallas, each playing their third match in an eight-day stretch, split the points after a scoreless draw on Saturday in Houston in a key late-season Western Conference match between the two Copa Tejas rivals.

The Dynamo’s Coco Carrasquilla had perhaps the match’s best opportunity to score when he worked a breakaway with Amine Bassi in the 88th minute that produced a powerful shot from Carrasquilla that was tipped over the crossbar by Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes.

The teams settled for a draw, with the Dynamo (12-11-8, 44 points) finishing the day in fourth place in the West and FC Dallas (10-10-11, 41 points) holding on to ninth place and the final wild-card playoff spot in the conference. There are three matches to play in the regular season.

Dallas’ Maarten Paes stopped five shots to record his seventh clean sheet of the season and 15th in his two-year career. Houston’s Steve Clark countered with two saves and posted his 12th shutout this season and the 62nd in his 10-year career.

Houston is 3-1-3 in its past seven MLS matches. FC Dallas has dropped just one match in its past 13 outings across all competitions, with four wins and eight draws in that stretch.

Dallas had the first real scoring chance of the contest when Alan Velasco was turned away by Clark at the bottom-right corner in the 10th minute. The Dynamo countered in the 28th minute when Hector Herrera tested Paes with a shot from outside the box that the Dallas keeper batted away at the top center of the goal.

Herrera rifled another shot from outside the box in the 37th minute that was also saved by Paes.

Houston recorded its third shot on goal via Franco Escobar’s shot from the right side of the six-yard box that was stopped in the bottom-right corner by the Dallas keeper.

Then the teams traded shots on target, with Paul Arriola producing a weak shot from close range that was gobbled up by Clark in the 78th minute and Nelson Quinones saved by Paes on the ensuing possession for Houston.

MLS News: St. Louis City score 4 goals in second half, roll past Sporting KC

0

Joao Klauss recorded a brace, leading host St. Louis City to a 4-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night.

Samuel Adeniran and Jared Stroud added second-half goals two minutes apart for St. Louis (17-10-5, 56 points), which set a new MLS record for wins by an expansion franchise and further cemented its spot atop the Western Conference.

William Agada responded with a goal for Sporting KC (10-14-8, 38 points), who are three points behind the playoff line in the Western Conference. The loss drops Kansas City to 2-8-6 in road matches this season.

Adeniran got the home side on the board off a set piece, heading Eduard Lowen’s cross past SKC goalkeeper Tim Melia for his eighth goal of the season in the 73rd minute.

Two minutes later, Stroud intercepted a Kansas City clearing attempt and put a left-footed strike past a diving Melia for his fifth of the season.

Klauss added to the lead in the 80th minute, putting Lowen’s feed past Melia. The Brazilian striker added his second tally of the night in the 85th minute and now has 10 goals on the season.

St. Louis controlled the possession in the opening 45 minutes, but both teams had three shots on target in a scoreless first half.

The two sides exchanged quality scoring chances in the opening 10 minutes. SKC defender Dany Rosero’s header was stopped by St. Louis keeper Roman Burki in the third minute.

Then, four minutes later, St. Louis midfielder Indiana Vassilev had a glorious chance from the center of the box, but Melia got enough of his arm on the strike to deflect it wide.

Klauss had a couple of opportunities to put St. Louis on the board. In the 30th minute, Melia made a diving save on Klauss’ right-footed strike from in close. Then, two minutes later, Anthony Markanich sent a cross for Klauss, who couldn’t get enough of his foot on the ball to redirect it on goal.

Before the first-half whistle, Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi split two St. Louis defenders, but Burki got a hand on Salloi’s shot to keep it out.
