ATP News: Diego Schwartzman, young Frenchmen win in Shanghai

0

Former World No. 8 Diego Schwartzman, who has struggled mightily this season, topped Luca Van Assche of France 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday in opening-round play at the Shanghai Masters.

Schwartzman, from Argentina, moved to 10-22 on the season. He broke Van Assche’s serve seven times in 10 chances over the 2-hour, 49-minute match and will face 27th seed Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic in the next round.

Another up-and-coming Frenchman, Arthur Fils, delivered an easy win, topping Pavel Kotov of Russia 6-1, 6-4 in 79 minutes. The 19-year-old Fils struck 25 winners compared to nine for Kotov.

“(I’m delighted) because I played against a great opponent,” Fils said. “I’ve known him a long time, he plays great. I was pretty happy with my first set, and my second set was good also. He played some great points and great games so he came back a little bit, but at the end I finished the match in a good position, so I’m really happy about it.”

The ATP Tour is in Shanghai for the first time since 2019 as the pandemic caused cancellation of the tournament in the following three years.

Nineteen of the top 20 players in the rankings are in the field, including Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, Russian Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune of Denmark, who are the top three seeds.

Also Thursday, another player from France, 21-year-old qualifier Terence Atmane, made his debut in a Masters 1000 event one to remember with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win against Jordan Thompson of Australia. Atmane debuted on the tour just two weeks ago in the ATP 250 event in Zhuhai, losing in the first round to Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan.

Atmane relied on 30 winners to advance to a second-round meeting with Nicolas Jarry of Chile, the No. 22 seed.

Also winning Thursday were Gregoire Barrere and Quentin Halys of France; Australians Aleksandar Vukic and Rinky Hijikata; American J.J. Wolf; Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Arnaldi of Italy; Taiwan’s Chun Hsin Tseng; Mikhail Kukushkin and Beibit Zhukayev, both of Kazakhstan; Botic Van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands; Yosuke Watanuki of Japan; and Sebastian Ofner of Austria.

NHL News: Flames to break ground on new $800M arena in ’24

Ten days before the 40th anniversary of the Saddledome opening, the Calgary Flames announced on Thursday that they have finalized an agreement with the City of Calgary, the Calgary Stampede and the Alberta provincial government to build a new arena.

Construction is slated to begin next year on the new arena adjacent to the Saddledome, which will cost $800 million Canadian and is expected to be ready for the 2026-27 season.

As part of the new arena deal, the Flames have a 35-year commitment to remain in Calgary. Renderings of the arena haven’t been made available, and there’s no timeline for those to be revealed.

Along with the new arena, the $1.22 billion project includes a community rink, additional parking, street-level enhancements around the building, and transportation and infrastructure improvements in the area.

The Flames will be on the hook for $356 million. The Alberta provincial government will put up $330 million, while the City of Calgary ($537 million) will cover the rest of the costs, including any overruns.

Once the new arena — which will seat 18,000 to 18,400 fans — is finished, the 19,289-seat Saddledome will be demolished.

According to Alberta transportation minister Devin Dreeshen, the government’s contribution will also go toward improving infrastructure around the new arena and help fund the community rink.

The Saddledome, which has been the Flames’ home since Oct. 15, 1983, also hosted multiple events at the 1988 Winter Olympics. Last renovated in 1994 at a cost of $37 million, it’s also the NHL’s second-oldest arena, trailing only Madison Square Garden, which opened in 1968.

NHL News: Kings F Arthur Kaliyev banned 2 regular-season games, 4 total

Los Angeles Kings forward Arthur Kaliyev was suspended for two preseason and two regular-season games without pay on Thursday for kneeing Anaheim Ducks forward Chase De Leo.

Kaliyev initiated a knee-on-knee hit against De Leo Tuesday night in a preseason game between the Kings and Ducks. De Leo was hurt on the play, and Kaliyev was handed a two-minute minor penalty.

Kaliyev had a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday before the ruling was handed down Thursday.

“Kaliyev adjusts to De Leo’s movements by extending his knee forward, significantly ensuring contact is made,” a Department of Player Safety official said in an explanation video. “This extension results in knee-on-knee contact with force necessary to merit supplemental discipline.”

Kaliyev had been fined once previously in his NHL career. This marks his first suspension.

He will be forced to sit out the Kings’ season opener against the Colorado Avalanche Oct. 11 and a game against the Carolina Hurricanes Oct. 14, both games at home.

In his second full season in the NHL in 2022-23, Kaliyev had a career-best 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists) in just 56 games. He has 28 goals and 28 assists in 137 career games for the Kings.

NHL News: Ducks award D Jamie Drysdale new 3-year deal

The Anaheim Ducks and defenseman Jamie Drysdale agreed to a new three-year contract on Thursday.

The Ducks did not disclose financial terms, but multiple outlets reported the agreement was worth $6.9 million ($2.3 million average annual value).

The deal kicks in this season, which beings in nine days for the Ducks, and takes Drysdale through the 2025-26 season.

Drysdale, 21, was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. After making his league debut in 2020-21, he had his best season in 2021-22 when he tallied 32 points (four goals, 28 assists) and 72 blocked shots while playing 81 of a possible 82 games.

Drysdale was then limited to eight games last year when he suffered a season-ending torn labrum in his shoulder on Oct. 28.

“Jamie is a talented young defenseman with a bright future,” Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said in a statement. “We are happy this process is complete and look forward to his growth as a valued member of our organization.”

CFL News: Elks looking to spoil Argos’ 150th anniversary party

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly is expected to start when the team celebrates its 150th anniversary Friday night against the visiting Edmonton Elks.

Kelly sat out the Argos’ 31-21 loss to the host Winnipeg Blue Bombers in last Friday’s rematch of the 2022 Grey Cup won by Toronto.

With Kelly resting last week, Cameron Dukes made his first start and finished 17-for-24 passing for 231 yards and a touchdown.

“That was great to see Cam get in this environment and do that,” Toronto coach Ryan Dinwiddie said. “That was kind of the point of resting Chad, but also seeing what we’ve got. We wanted to win it and we thought we could with our backup (but) we just didn’t make enough plays.”

Kelly has thrown for 3,396 yards and 21 touchdowns this season.

The Argonauts also expect to have defensive lineman Shawn Oakman and linebacker Wynton McManis back in the lineup.

While the Argonauts (12-2) have clinched first place in the East Division, the Elks (4-11) are tied for fourth with the Calgary Stampeders in the West and still trying for a playoff spot.

The Elks were idle last week after their offense showed some improvement in a 37-29 home loss to the B.C. Lions on Sept. 22.

“We got outplayed in all three phases. I thought, offensively, defensively and in the kicking game they beat us in this game,” Elks coach Chris Jones said. “We’re closer than maybe what we were, but you don’t get consolation prizes for losing the football game.”

Elks quarterback Tre Ford completed 20 of 27 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns against the Lions.

“Even though I still thought we didn’t execute to the level we wanted to, it was definitely a step forward,” Ford said.

The Elks will be without linebacker Nyles Morgan (hamstring), defensive back Marcus Lewis (calf) and defensive linemen Sam Acheampong (groin), J-Min Pelley (appendicitis) and Daniel Ross (elbow).

Toronto will be without wide receiver Cam Phillips (groin) and defensive backs DaShaun Amos (ankle), Josh Hagerty (shoulder) and Jamal Peters (groin).

The Argonauts defeated the Elks 43-31 at Edmonton on June 25.

CFL News: Lions host Bombers in battle of West’s best

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and BC Lions will look to gain the upper hand in their quest for the top seed in the West Division when they clash on Friday in Vancouver.

The Blue Bombers and Lions sport identical 11-4 overall records on the season and have split their two previous contests in Winnipeg. BC posted a 30-6 win on June 22 and dropped a 50-14 decision on Aug. 3, although the latter game was contested without its star quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. due to a knee injury.

Adams leads the CFL in passing yards (4,005). Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros, however, has tossed a league-best 30 touchdown passes.

“Every week is a must-win. That’s how we go about it. You don’t go in to lose, you go in to win,” Collaros said of Friday’s clash, per the Winnipeg Free Press. “Obviously, the goal is to have a great regular season and win the West. That’s the goal, so it’s a must-win.”

Collaros threw for 258 yards and a touchdown to lift Winnipeg to a 31-21 victory over the Toronto Argonauts last Friday.

Adams completed 27 of 36 passes for a season-high 458 yards and three touchdowns last Friday as BC extended its winning streak to four games with a 33-26 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Keon Hatcher had 10 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown, while Alexander Hollins reeled in two scoring strikes for the Lions.

“Being the best is in my mind,” Lions defensive back T.J. Lee said, per the Vancouver Sun. “I don’t really care about the antics and the politics and how everything lines up, win, lose. All I care about is winning.

“When it comes to however the playoffs match up and rankings shape up, we’ve still got to line it up and prove ourselves. That’s how I try to simplify it to the guys. Doesn’t matter, all the standings and all that stuff. It’s about winning in the tail end of the season.”

The Lions will close out their season with a road game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Oct. 13) and a home clash versus the Calgary Stampeders (Oct. 20).

The Blue Bombers will have a bye next week before finishing up against the visiting Edmonton Elks (Oct. 21) and host Stampeders (Oct. 27).

Polestar Automotive Stock Drops 4 percent Despite Record Deliveries

0

Polestar Automotive (NASDAQ:PSNY) shares dropped more than 4% intra-day today despite the Swedish electric car manufacturer disclosing record delivery figures for the third quarter of 2023.
During the third quarter, Polestar experienced a remarkable 50% surge in vehicle deliveries compared to the previous year, amounting to approximately 13,900 units. This impressive growth was primarily attributable to robust sales of the improved Polestar 2, resulting in significant enhancements in profit margins.
Over the initial nine months of the year, Polestar achieved a year-on-year growth rate of 37%, with roughly 41,700 vehicles shipped. As Polestar 4 deliveries commence in China in the forthcoming fourth quarter, the company maintains an optimistic outlook, anticipating the delivery of between 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles in 2023.
Polestar is scheduled to release its financial report for the third quarter on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, after the market closes.

XPO Price Target Raised at Wolfe Research

0

Wolfe Research analysts raised their price target for XPO (NYSE:XPO) from $87 per share to $105 while maintaining an Outperform rating on the stock.
The analysts’ assessment of the transportation sector in the third quarter suggested an improving risk/reward scenario for transport stocks. They pointed out early indications of a potential bottoming in freight demand, citing recent improvements in West Coast import volumes, as well as rail intermodal and carload volumes.
However, they acknowledged that TL (Truckload) spot rates remain close to historical lows, and the firm anticipates ongoing pressure on contractual pricing and overall yield growth. Consequently, Wolfe Research believes there is continued earnings per share (EPS) risk across the industry in the third quarter, with even greater potential risk to the Street’s fourth-quarter estimates.
Regarding XPO, the analysts expressed confidence in its “significant turnaround potential” and highlighted the possibility of substantial margin improvement and stock price upside from its current levels.

O’Reilly Automotive Upgraded to Buy at Citi

0

Citi analysts upgraded their rating on O’Reilly Automotive (NASDAQ:ORLY) from Neutral to Buy and raised the 12-month price target on the stock from $983.00 to $1,040.00. This decision comes after a recent decline in the stock’s price. The analysts stated that they believe the recent dip in shares presents an attractive buying opportunity, especially for a stable and defensive retailer.
Citi acknowledged the challenging environment expected in the retail sector, with reduced consumer spending on non-essential items anticipated in the latter half of 2023 and throughout 2024. They also noted difficulties in execution within defensive sectors.
However, the analysts highlighted the automotive parts retail industry’s resilience, with O’Reilly being the standout historically consistent player among auto parts retailers. Citi expects O’Reilly to demonstrate strong execution in the near to medium term.

AMD’s Price Target Cut to $125 at Baird

0

Baird analysts revised down their price target for AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) from $170.00 to $125.00 while maintaining an Outperform rating.
The analysts explained the price target adjustment by stating that they are lowering their 2024 estimates for the upcoming year due to a reduced outlook for data center revenue. This adjustment stems from the delay in the original projection for significant AI market share and the slower ramp-up timing for the MI300, primarily because of the absence of design wins outside of supercomputing applications and the lack of a well-established software ecosystem.
Additionally, the analysts noted that Nvidia’s GH200 is experiencing strong demand across all customer segments, which represents a new layer of competition set to begin next year and could potentially cannibalize x86 architectures. Despite these challenges, the analysts expressed a positive outlook for gaming, with expectations of a rebound starting in the fourth quarter.
