F1 News: AlphaTauri ‘definitely’ expects Daniel Ricciardo back for Austin

AlphaTauri driver Daniel Ricciardo is expected to be back behind the wheel at the U.S. Grand Prix on Oct. 22 at Austin, Texas.

The 34-year-old Australian has been out since breaking a bone in his hand in August when he crashed during a practice run for the Dutch Grand Prix.

“That’s definitely the plan,” AlphaTauri chief executive Peter Bayer told reporters Friday at the Qatar Grand Prix when asked about Ricciardo’s return in Texas.

“He was in the simulator on Monday and he said that he could go almost until the end, but it was not 100 percent and he didn’t want to rush things.”

Liam Lawson, 21, of New Zealand has filled in for Ricciardo in the last four F1 races. His best finish was ninth at the Singapore GP on Sept 17.

“We have this amazing luxury of having a top third driver who can jump into the seat and so we together decided to give (Ricciardo) a bit more time and he should be in the car in Austin,” Bayer said.

Residents in a downtown Chicago high-rise have complained for more than two years about naked man showing off his private parts with the blinds not drawn. James Bakk, 70, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of public indecency. Bakk acknowledged being previously asked to stop exposing himself. He said the women should put the blinds down if they were upset by the view.

Neighbors disagreed and filed complaints with the police. WGN news reported, A second woman, who wished to remain anonymous, kept a journal over a recent 10-month period. According to her calculations, the man exposed himself 68 times in total, often many times every day. The news outlet also reported, “I do feel like it’s a form of sexual harassment,” she said in August. The women filed police reports that say the man has waved and once held up a sign saying, ‘come over.”

The women eventually resorted to WGN to raise awareness of their situation after their complaints to building management, their city, and the police, but all were unanswered.

Chicago police arrested James Bakk, 70, and accused him of two misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure.

Molson Coors (TAP), the popular brewing company, is expanding its beverages to include non-beer and nonalcoholic drinks. The CEO of the company recently spoke to a popular outlet about its plans on launching energy drinks and nonalcoholic versions of its popular brands in an interview. One such nonalcoholic version of its popular drink will be launched before the advent of dry January.

On Wednesday Gavin Hattersley, who is the CEO of Molson Coors, spoke to CNBC’s Jim Cramer. He detailed the future plans of the company and emphasized its change of direction towards nonalcoholic beverages, keeping in mind changing trends among young consumers.

Hattersley mentioned that younger consumers, including those who were mainly in their twenties, focused on health and wellness and this change in behavior has had an effect on the brewing company’s strategy. The new strategy includes a focus on energy drinks and nonalcoholic products that could tap into this consumer market.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

Hattersley also spoke of how Molson Coors had successfully created a nonalcoholic version of its popular brand Blue Moon. He said that this version was very similar in taste to the original and would be launched in December.

He told CNBC, “If it tastes good, the consumers are going to drink them. I’m looking forward to getting that in the market in December.”

The CEO also said that Molson Coors’ brand has been occupying more shelf space this fall and that he is expecting this trend to continue into spring.

The Canadian-American multinational drink and brewing company is the maker of many popular brands some of which include
Blue Moon
Carling
Coors Light
Miller Lite and many more.

Molson Coors was formed in 2005 after Molson of Canada merged with Coors of United States. The multinational brewing company has its headquarters in Chicago, Illinois in the U.S. and main offices in Golden, Colorado as well as Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Powerball jackpot climbs to an estimated $1.4 billion as no players matched all six numbers

Powerball jackpot climbs to an estimated $1.4 billion as no players matched all six numbers. The anticipated jackpot for the Powerball drawing on Saturday, October 7, 2023, is $1.4 billion.

That’s a high number, the third largest in Powerball history, but due to rising ticket sales, it might pass it by the time the drawing is held and take second place. The most recent Powerball jackpot winner purchased a $1.08 billion ticket in California on July 19.

According to a recent survey, the opportunity for customers to buy tickets online and the addition of an extra day are to blame for the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots recently smashing records.

The jackpot’s odds of 1 in 292.2 million are what make it so difficult to win and give the lucky player (or players) who choose the game’s six winning numbers such enormous payouts. The seventh-largest lottery prize in history is the most recent Powerball jackpot.

Most states charge $2 for Powerball tickets, and customers can choose their own single Powerball numbers or let a computer do it for them. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EDT, Powerball drawings are held.

Which States Permit Online Lottery Ticket Purchases?

The exhilaration associated with playing the lotto online rises. Why? Of course, it makes playing the lottery convenient for lottery enthusiasts. Furthermore, your chances of winning are unaffected by the fact that you are playing online rather than physically purchasing your ticket. You can play all of your state’s favorite regional lotteries, as well as Powerball and Mega Millions, if they’re accessible, using a lottery app.

See which states you are eligible to buy online.

There are seventeen states where you can make online lottery ticket orders using Jackpocket, a lottery courier app. These states are:

  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Idaho
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Texas
  • Washington DC
  • West Virginia

Federal taxes will be withheld by state lotteries at a rate of 24% of jackpot wins, and additional federal taxes may be due when filing federal tax returns. State taxes will differ since some states don’t tax lottery wins at all while others impose varying rates of taxation.

Players who purchase winning grand prize tickets in a state other than their home state will be taxed according to the state in which they purchased the ticket.

Bank of America claims that the current housing market is eerily similar to that of the 1980s. There are many parallels between today and the 1970s, including high inflation, rising mortgage rates, and pent-up demand for housing caused by a growing demographic boom. In a note released on Thursday, Bank of America stated, “We think the 1980s are a better analogy for today’s market than the 2008 housing crash.”

LPGA News: Hyo Joo Kim fires 7-under 64 for 2-shot lead at The Ascendant

0

Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea carded eight birdies en route to a 7-under-par 64 and a two-stroke lead after the first round Thursday of The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America.

Kim was sidetracked by one bogey at the par-3 11th hole at the par-71 Old American Golf Club in The Colony, a suburb of Dallas, Texas.

The 28-year-old — who has five career LPGA Tour victories including one major, the 2014 Evian Championship — more than compensated with birdies at Nos. 2, 3, 6, 8 and four straight from 13 to 16.

Three players are two shots back at 5 under: Yu-Sang Hou of Taiwan, Azahara Munoz of Spain and Sofia Garcia of Paraguay. Hou and Garcia had bogey-free rounds, while Munoz responded to a bogey at No. 1 with birdies at six of her next 11 holes before a bogey at the par-4 15th and a birdie at the par-7 No. 17.

“I just hit my driver pretty good, hit lots of fairways, hit my irons good. Everything was kind of working,” Munoz said.

Munoz said overnight rain didn’t affect her after drier conditions for practice rounds at the course earlier in the week.

“To be honest, it didn’t feel wet out there,” Munoz said. “The greens were still firm and so the thing that changed the most today was the wind. We’ve been playing with south wind and today was north wind.

“It was kind of challenging. Off the tees was different lines, different clubs, but we I think we have our caddies, we trust them, and we have an amazing yardage book, so you just have to adjust.”

Defending champion Charley Hull of England is tied for 51st after a 1-over 72 featuring three bogeys and two birdies.

Sarah Kemp of Australia is tied for fifth with American Marina Alex at 4-under 67. She had two bogeys on the front nine at Nos. 3 and 9 to make the turn at even-par 35, then went bogey-free on the back nine with birdies at Nos. 10, 15, 16 and 17.

“You know, it’s a weird story,” she said of her improvement as the round progressed, noting she learned Thursday morning that paperwork was being processed to get a Japanese visa, and she and her caddie were excited about it.

“We weren’t even talking about golf,” Kemp said. “We were like, ‘OK, where are we going to go eat in Japan?’ So I think … the back nine like calmed down and it sort of kicked into gear. Really just not even thinking about golf on the front nine.”

Kemp said a lot of golfers don’t like their conversations to be strictly about the ongoing round.

“Like sometimes you can get really serious, so I think it’s important to switch off in between shots and have a good time out there,” she said. “We’re out there for quite a while, so might as well enjoy it while we’re doing it.”

John Calipari: Zvonimir Ivisic beat ‘all obstacles’ to join Kentucky

Kentucky coach John Calipari is over the moon that his latest signing, 7-foot-2 Croatian center Zvonimir Ivisic, was admitted to the university and could become eligible to play in 2023-24.

The school confirmed to multiple outlets this week that Ivisic cleared eligibility hurdles and was admitted as a student.

“I can’t tell you how happy I am with how this all turned out,” Calipari wrote Thursday on X, formerly Twitter. “The work was done by Big Z and his family. For him to be persistent and keep fighting was so impressive and it showed how badly he wanted to be a part of our team! He overcame all obstacles and just wouldn’t be deterred.”

Ivisic committed to Kentucky on Aug. 1. Per reports, his admission as an international student hit a snag before he was cleared for enrollment. He would be eligible to play for the Wildcats during the first half of the season if he gets enrolled in the already-ongoing fall semester by mid-October, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

Calipari made no mention of a timeline for Ivisic to appear in games for Kentucky.

“When we started recruiting Z, my mind started moving to how we can help our University become even more prominent worldwide,” Calipari wrote. “This basketball program is a global brand and now we can continue to open new avenues for students to come to the University of Kentucky.”

At 7-foot-2, 220 pounds, Ivisic is a strong shot blocker but also thrives offensively from long distance. He entered his name in the past two NBA drafts before withdrawing.

Ivisic, 20, played the past two seasons with Montenegro-based SC Derby of Europe’s ABA League. He also represented Croatia in the FIBA U20 European Championship this summer and averaged 11.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game.

Kentucky currently is without two big men — Aaron Bradshaw and Ugonna Onyenso — who are recovering from foot injuries. Both are expected to be cleared to play before the regular season begins this fall.

The head of Social Security has mandated a comprehensive review of benefit overpayments

0

Wikimedia j4p4n

The federal agency that oversees Social Security announced Wednesday that it will review the way it handles “overpayments” money it sends beneficiaries that it later determines they weren’t entitled to receive.

The Social Security Administration made the announcement weeks after KFF Health News and Cox Media Group reported that the agency has been trying to reclaim billions of dollars from beneficiaries, including many poor, retired, and disabled people who have spent the money and are unable to repay it.

“Despite our high accuracy rates, I am putting together a team to review our overpayment policies and procedures to further improve how we serve our customers,” Kilolo Kijakazi, acting commissioner of Social Security, said in a news release.

Kijakazi said she had chosen a “senior official” to lead the team and report directly to her.

During the 2022 fiscal year, the agency recovered $4.7 billion of overpayments, according to a report by SSA’s inspector general.

By the time the agency catches an error and notifies a beneficiary that they have been overpaid, years may have passed and the amount involved can reach tens of thousands of dollars or more.

In the wake of the KFF Health News/CMG investigation, some members of the House and Senate called on the Social Security Administration to be held accountable and to change its approach.

“The government’s got to fix this,” Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who chairs a Senate panel that oversees Social Security, said in a recent interview. “It’s a management problem, and people there should be held accountable,” Brown added.

In a tweet today, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), a member of the Committee on Aging, said he was “glad to see swift action being taken.”

The investigative report showed that overpayments can result from the government making a mistake or from beneficiaries failing to comply with requirements, intentionally or otherwise.

One major factor: to qualify for certain benefits, people are limited as to how much they can save, and the limits haven’t been updated for inflation in decades.

For individuals in one of the Social Security programs, the asset limit now stands at $2,000.

The troubles can also be attributed to rules that are hard for beneficiaries and federal workers to follow; manual processes at the agency that are susceptible to human error; and understaffing that makes it difficult for beneficiaries to get through to SSA employees and for employees to keep up with the workload.

By the Social Security Administration’s own account, many of the overpayments are a result of errors or lapses on the part of the agency.

Social Security pays $1.4 trillion in benefits to more than 71 million people annually, and about 0.5% of the payments are overpayments, the agency said in the Oct. 4 news release.

The overpayment rate is much higher in the Supplemental Security Income program, which provides money to people with little or no income or other resources who are disabled, blind, or at least 65. In that program, overpayments represent about 8% of payments, the SSA news release said.

The agency ascribed the 8% overpayment rate to the complexity of the SSI program.

“When overpayments do happen, the agency is required by law to adjust benefits or recover debts,” the news release said.

If a beneficiary “doesn’t agree that they’ve been overpaid, or believes the amount is incorrect, they can appeal,” the news release noted. “If they believe they shouldn’t have to pay the money back, they can request that the agency waive collection of the overpayment.”

The agency said it had just released a “streamlined waiver request form that is easier to understand and less burdensome.”

Some beneficiaries have told KFF Health News and CMG that trying to communicate with the agency, let alone sort out an alleged overpayment, can be exasperating. In the meantime, the government can stop or reduce their monthly benefit checks.

Some people struggling to survive on monthly benefits say even arrangements that allow them to repay the government gradually can leave them unable to cover their rent or buy food.

The Social Security Administration faces competing pressures. It’s required to pay people the benefits to which they are legally entitled and not to misuse taxpayer funds. Trying to claw back overpayments from vulnerable beneficiaries runs counter to the goals of safety-net programs, lawmakers and advocates for the disabled, among others, have argued.

Authorities recovered a knife as well as the sweatshirt that the suspect was allegedly wearing when the fatal stabbing took place, from the suspect’s apartment. He was arrested at about 10 a.m., on Thursday.

WTA News: Coco Gauff extends win streak to 15 in Beijing

0

No. 3 seed Coco Gauff defeated No. 16 Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at the China Open in Beijing.

It was the 15th consecutive win for the 19-year-old American and reigning U.S. Open champion, the longest streak this season on the WTA Tour. Gauff is 21-1 since her first-round loss at Wimbledon.

“The first two matches, I think I was disappointed in the way that I was playing,” Gauff said. “I think I was playing a little bit more tight, not going for my shots, not going for my serve. Today I was telling myself try to hit above 110 (mph), 115 as much as I could, be more aggressive.”

Gauff converted three of four break points and got off to fast starts, taking a 3-0 lead in the first set and a 4-0 edge in the second.

She maintained her composure when Kudermetova rallied, pulling ahead 5-4 and serving at 40-0 in the opening set. Gauff fought off four set points and eventually forced the tiebreak.

“In the long run … I feel like now that the pressure is off, now that the Grand Slam season is over and I’m qualified (for the WTA Finals), I think this could be a good week to continue to work on things I need to work on,” she said. “Today I think I approached the match like that. I wish I did it earlier.”

Gauff will face No. 6 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece, who survived a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 challenge from home favorite Xinyu Wang in two hours and 31 minutes.

Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus held off unseeded Italian Jasmine Paolini for a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win in the third round. The World No. 1 smashed 16 aces and saved five of eight break points to set up a quarterfinal clash against No. 5 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

“It’s always great battles against Elena. I think I just have to focus on myself, play aggressive and just play my game,” Sabalenka said. “I know that I’ll have some chances to win this match. In the last match I lost, I got nervous a little bit and I rushed a little bit more. The key against Elena is just to stay calm, stay aggressive, and not over-rush things.”

Ninth-seeded Caroline Garcia of France rolled into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina in 83 minutes. Garcia will take on No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland for a shot at the semifinals in the WTA 1000 event.
