MLS News: Sounders, Whitecaps fight for breathing room in crowded West

0

Both the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps clinched MLS playoff berths with victories Wednesday.

But that doesn’t mean Saturday night’s matchup in Seattle between the Cascadia Cup rivals is meaningless.

With only six points separating second-place Seattle (13-9-10, 49 points) and seventh-place Portland, playoff seeding is still in doubt. Vancouver (12-10-10, 46 points) is currently fifth in the West.

The Sounders defeated the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 Wednesday, running their unbeaten streak to seven matches (3-0-4), as Cristian Roldan scored the winner in the final minute of second-half stoppage time.

Seattle is returning to the playoffs after missing out in 2022, the only season since it joined MLS in 2009 in which it failed to qualify for the postseason.

“That’s a team win,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said. “I’m happy for the group that we were able to put ourselves in the playoffs, not having us just kind of back our way in, because I think that group deserves every accolade.”

Jordan Morris also scored for Seattle, his team-leading 11th of the season.

“At certain points it wasn’t our best game, but to grind out like that at this point in the season and clinch playoffs is big,” Morris said. “The team doesn’t quit, the team doesn’t give up.”

The Whitecaps clinched their playoff spot and snapped a four-match winless streak with a 3-0 victory Wednesday against visiting St. Louis City SC, which has already captured the Western Conference title. Brian White, Sebastian Berhalter and Richie Laryea scored second-half goals.

White’s goal was his 15th of the season, tied for third in the league behind Los Angeles FC’s Denis Bouanga (17) and FC Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta (16).

“The big difference (Wednesday) was you could see that we wanted to win from minute one,” Whitecaps coach Vanni Sartini. “We were hangry — not hungry — but hangry. Hungry and angry together from those from the last couple of performance and we did well.”

This will be the third meeting of the season between the teams. They split the first two, both played in Vancouver, with the Whitecaps winning 2-0 on May 20 and the Sounders coming away with a 3-2 victory July 8.

The Whitecaps haven’t won in Seattle since 2016, going 0-8-1 over their past nine trips.

MLS News: After parting with coach, Minnesota United face hungry Galaxy

0

The Los Angeles Galaxy will try to keep their slim MLS Cup playoff hopes alive Saturday when they play sputtering Minnesota United in Saint Paul, Minn.

Both teams likely need to win out to have any chance at making the Western Conference playoffs. Los Angeles (8-12-11, 35 points) trails ninth-place FC Dallas by six points for the final playoff spot with three matches left for both teams.

Minnesota United (9-12-11, 38 points), which fired head coach Adrian Heath Friday morning, is three points behind but has just two matches remaining.

The Loons bring a seven-match winless streak (0-4-3), tied for the longest in franchise history, into the contest after an ugly 5-1 loss LAFC Wednesday. That contest could have been even more lopsided if not for a 10-save performance by goaltender Dayne St. Clair.

Less than 48 hours later, Heath, the only manager the Loons have had in their seven years of existence, and technical director Mark Watson were both shown the door. Assistant coach Sean McAuley will manage the team for the final two matches.

“In terms of why now, it’s not something that comes rash after a bad defeat in L.A.,” franchise CEO Shari Ballard told reporters at practice Friday. “I felt the performance had been plateauing a bit the last couple of years. We’ve had some really positive stuff and some things that have been hard. As we got through the year it just continues to go in the wrong direction.”

Minnesota United are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in five seasons. The Loons are tied with the last-place Colorado Rapids for fewest home wins in MLS with three.

The Galaxy come in off a 2-1 loss at Seattle Wednesday. Cristian Roldan scored in the sixth and final minute of stoppage time to win it for the Sounders and deny L.A. a crucial point. Douglas Costa had tied the match for the Galaxy with a goal in the 54th minute.

“To lose the point at the end is heartbreaking for the group.” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney told reporters. “The gut punch at the end is that it’s the last play of the game.”

L.A. rallied for a 4-3 victory over Minnesota United in a Sept. 20 match in Carson, Calif., and finishes the season with home matches against Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas.

“We know what we have to do. We have to win all our games,” defender Kelvin Leerdam said. “So I’m not looking at which team we’re playing, where we’re playing. I’m only thinking about winning.”

MLS News: Sporting KC make last-gasp playoff push vs. Real Salt Lake

0

Real Salt Lake’s playoff fate will not be decided on the final day of the regular season for a third consecutive year. The Utah club enters its home finale against Sporting Kansas City Saturday with a postseason berth assured.

Salt Lake (13-11-7, 46 points) clinched a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs after Los Angeles FC beat Minnesota 5-1 on Wednesday. That result followed on the heels of RSL’s 1-0 road victory over LAFC on Sunday — their first ever regular-season win over LAFC away from home.

Chicho Arango scored the match’s only goal in the 72nd minute when he headed the ball off a curled cross from Rubio Rubin to the far post. Arango’s 99th goal of his pro soccer career, combined with Zac MacMath’s eighth clean sheet in 2023, helped Salt Lake earn a club-record seventh road victory this season.

“You couldn’t have scripted it any better,” RSL coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “It’s a fantastic story for Chicho. He’s really important (for) his leadership and his drive in this group.”

Kansas City (10-14-8, 38 points) finds itself in a desperate situation with two matches left. They trail FC Dallas by three points for the final wild-card spot and needs a victory or draw in Utah, coupled with a Dallas loss to San Jose, to keep its scant playoff hopes alive.

A lack of consistency has proved problematic for Kansas City in recent matches. A 4-1 setback to first-place St. Louis last Saturday marked the third loss in five matches for the club.

St. Louis ran off four goals in a 12-minute stretch late in the second half to pull away. Their flurry prevented Willy Agada’s stoppage-time goal off a header from having any meaningful impact.

“Why did we give up those goals? Poor decisions,” Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said. “It was poor decisions. At the end of the day, it was just poor decisions.”

Salt Lake and Kansas City met once earlier this season, battling to a 2-2 draw in July.

MLS News: Playoff-bound Dynamo out for more vs. improving Rapids

0

The Houston Dynamo have already booked their place in the MLS Cup Playoffs and will try to improve on their seeding when the already-eliminated Colorado Rapids pay a visit Saturday.

The match closes Houston’s home regular-season schedule and ends a brutal run of seven games in 22 days.

Within that, the Dynamo (12-11-9, 45 points) defeated Inter Miami to win the U.S. Open Cup final on Sept. 27 and qualified for their first postseason since 2017.

The Dynamo enter Saturday just one point out of a top-four postseason spot, which would give them at least one home match in the postseason.

And when the Dynamo only managed a 1-1 draw at Montreal on Wednesday night after conceding a late equalizer, in a game without suspended captain Hector Herrera, the fact that the disappointment was palpable was also a sign of how much the club has progressed.

“When you let a team hang around and they throw on big boys and get extremely aggressive, you can only hold that off for so long,” Houston coach Ben Olsen said. “(We) had a courageous defensive performance and plenty of looks, and I love how the expectations are changing. This is a very tough place to come, in the history of this league, and I thought we had a better game and better chances.”

Herrera has a team-leading 14 assists and is expected to return after serving his suspension for yellow card accumulation. Amine Bassi leads the Dynamo with nine goals.

Colorado (5-15-11, 26 points) has struggled in attack all season and its 24 goals scored is still an MLS low. But the Rapids have looked improved under interim coach Chris Little, scoring eight times in the last five games.

Cole Bassett has scored his team-leading third, fourth and fifth goals in that stretch, in which Colorado is 2-2-1.

They earned a 1-0 home win against Austin last weekend before a scheduled midweek match against FC Dallas was postponed by weather till next Wednesday.

“There’s just a different kind of an energy, you can feel it,” goalkeeper Marko Ilic said after the Austin win. “You can see today, everybody died for the ball.”

MLS News: Los Angeles FC, Austin FC meet amid huge playoff implications

0

Los Angeles FC look to end the playoff hopes of Austin FC and build momentum for the postseason when the two sides square off Saturday in Austin in a key late-season match.

LAFC (13-10-9, 48 points) have already garnered a spot in the playoffs but can clinch home-pitch advantage in the first round. Los Angeles cannot win the West but can move up to second in the conference with a win.

Meanwhile, Austin (10-14-8, 38 points) must win Saturday and in its last game in San Jose on Oct. 21 while getting some help with losses from the teams above it in the standings to earn a return trip to the postseason.

Austin plays at home for the final time after a rousing 3-0 win over D.C. United last Saturday. The victory emphatically snapped the Verde’s 10-game winless streak in combined Leagues Cup and MLS play, the longest run without a victory in club history, and was Austin’s win since July 15.

Sebastian Driussi scored a goal and an assist as he played through a lingering groin injury to lead the Verde. Will Bruin and Matt Hedges also found the net for Austin.

“Obviously, we needed to get three points, and it’s been a long time coming,” Austin coach Josh Wolff said. “It was a good testament of who our players are and what their character has been. They fight, they grind. I think they’re all disappointed with the way a lot of these games have gone.

“We’ve given ourselves a bit of a heartbeat. We’ll get ready and try to get fresh for LAFC.”

Los Angeles FC heads to Austin on the heels of a 5-1 win over Minnesota United on Wednesday. Denis Bouanga racked up a hat trick in the first half. Bouanga now has a league-best 17 goals in 29 MLS games and earned Player of the Matchday for Matchday 36 for his efforts.

LAFC also got a tally from Filip Krastev, and Minnesota surrendered an own goal to help the defending league champions improve to 2-1-2 over their past five MLS matches.

“Just continue the course, keep working, put your head down, put in the hard work in the training field, which guys have done,” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said about his team’s production. “it’s a little bit like riding a bike — guys know how to do it, they know how to play, they know how to score.”

LAFC dominated Austin 3-0 in the teams’ first meeting of the year on April 8 in Los Angeles.

NHL News: Sidney Crosby, Penguins welcome Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard to NHL

It’s the NHL season opener for both teams Tuesday, a time for the Pittsburgh Penguins and visiting Chicago Blackhawks to unveil their lineups and get a new start toward trying to return to the playoffs.

However, that all could be overshadowed by a specific matchup.

Pittsburgh captain, center and sure Hall of Fame inductee Sidney Crosby will be on the opposite side from Chicago highly touted rookie center Connor Bedard, the top pick in the 2023 draft.

Crosby, entering his 19th NHL season, has led the Penguins to three Stanley Cup titles, has 550 goals and 1,502 points in 1,190 games and has won two Hart (MVP), two Art Ross (scoring title) and two Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) trophies.

Now 36, he hasn’t changed his approach as he’s aged.

“I think (it’s) just trying to do your best physically to make sure you can play at the highest level and compete that way,” Crosby said.

Last season, he led the Penguins with 93 points and played in all 82 games.

“He represents everything that’s right in hockey and sports,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said during training camp.

This will be the 18th season together for Crosby and fellow core Penguins players Evgeni Malkin, the No. 2 center, and defenseman Kris Letang. Pittsburgh committed to trying to win another Cup — or more — with them when Letang and Malkin were re-signed after the 2021-22 season.

That flopped, though, when the Penguins barely missed the playoffs last season.

Pittsburgh doubled down, jettisoning much of its upper management and bringing in president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas.

He had an incredibly active first offseason, punctuated by trading for reigning and three-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson to provide a one-two punch with Letang on the blueline, as well as bringing in several new forwards, primarily to compete for what will be a revamped bottom two lines.

“I’m looking forward to figuring out what I need to do to be as successful as I can for this group to collectively have success,” Karlsson said.

Bedard, who was born weeks before the Penguins drafted Crosby first overall in 2005, represents the largest part of a full rebuild for the Blackhawks.

He led the junior Western Hockey League with 71 goals and 143 points in 57 games last season. Now he will play his first NHL game against Crosby, his childhood idol.

“You get excited and think about it, for sure,” Bedard said, “but I’m trying to focus on these last few days (of training camp) we have to try to get better.”

Bedard, 18, showed a few dazzling moves in four preseason games and it’s a given that he will make the opening-night roster.

Chicago second-year coach Luke Richardson gave a nod to Bedard’s natural gifts — “He sees (the game) differently than us, so we’re going to have to have trust in a guy with that kind of talent and vision,” he said — but cautioned that the young star still is a rookie.

“There are … parts of his game he’s still going to have some transition time, and we’re helping him,” Richardson said.

LPGA News: Maja Stark maintains one-stroke lead in Shanghai

0

Sweden’s Maja Stark leads two-time champion Danielle Kang and home-country favorite Yu Liu of China by one stroke after two rounds at the Buick LPGA Shanghai.

Stark kept ahold of her first-round lead and moved to 10-under with a 2-under 68 in Friday’s second round at the 6,672-yard Qizhong Garden Golf Club. She finished one stroke off the tournament’s 36-hole record of 134.

Kang, who won the last two titles here in 2018-19 prior to the pandemic, and Liu both carded scores of 67. Another shot back at 8-under are Spain’s Azahara Munoz (66 Thursday), Japan’s Yuna Nishimura (67) and Pavarisa Yoktuan of Thailand (68).

Stark is seeking her first victory since winning her maiden LPGA title at the 2022 ISPS Handa World Invitational.

“I think I played a little bit better than yesterday actually because I hit better shots. Obviously didn’t make as many putts as I did yesterday, but overall my game felt better,” said Stark, who recorded five birdies with one bogey at the par-3 seventh hole after missing the green.

Stark said she was looking forward to playing with Kang and Liu on Saturday.

“I’m really excited to play with (Liu). On her home soil I think she’s going to be ready to play really well,” Stark said. “Her home course, I didn’t actually know that, but I feel like I could maybe get some tips because it’s pretty tricky out there. Maybe I’ll steal some of her strategies.”

After one birdie and one bogey through eight holes Thursday, Liu birdied five of the next six holes — four straight from Nos. 11-14 — to join the final grouping.

“To be honest, pretty low expectations coming in because I’m not good at playing in the rain, so I knew the forecast was pretty much going to rain all throughout the round, which it did,” Liu said. “So I just feel like — my goal today was just to get through the round without making too much damage. I feel like I did a pretty good job.”

Liu tied for ninth in 2018 and tied for third in 2019 in the first two editions of the event.

Kang finished strong with four birdies in her last six holes.

“I have hit some good drives,” Kang said. “Keep giving myself some good opportunities it be able to hit the second shots and stuff, so game has been feeling good for a little bit.”

First-round co-leader Wichanee Meechai shot 72 to slip into a six-way tie for eighth at 6-under. World No. 1 Lilia Vu is tied for 14th at 5-under after a second-round 67 with seven birdies and two bogeys.

CHAMP News: Rod Pampling finishes hot, takes SAS Championship lead

Rod Pampling of Australia caught fire on the back nine in order to post a 6-under 66 and take the first-round lead at the SAS Championship on Friday in Cary, N.C.

Five of Pampling’s seven birdies came over his last eight holes at Prestonwood Country Club. His birdie at the par-4 18th ensured him a one-stroke lead over a 10-way tie for second place.

“Obviously started the day off really well, hit a lot of close shots,” Pampling said. “Had a three-putt, which kind of stalled (the round). But then yeah, then I made a nice one on 11 which got us kickstarted. Had obviously five birdies in the last eight holes, which was nice. It was a good day.”

Pampling’s only win on the PGA Tour Champions came at the 2021 Boeing Classic. He entered the week a respectable 30th place in the Charles Schwab Cup money list. The SAS Championship is the final regular-season event before the Schwab Cup playoffs begin.

Pampling grabbed the lead while the course was gettable amid fair weather conditions.

“Once you get going on the back, yes, if you’re driving it well,” he said. “That’s the key, still got to drive it well, got to be in the fairway. I was doing that, which just, yeah, allows you to be very aggressive out there. The course is in perfect condition, the greens are rolling great. It really was there for the taking today.”

The 10-way tie at 5-under 67 includes New Zealand’s Steven Alker, South African vet Ernie Els and Jerry Kelly. That trio entered the week in third, sixth and eighth place in the Schwab Cup standings, respectively.

Also tied at 67 are Vijay Singh of Fiji, Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, Retief Goosen of South Africa, Jesper Parnevik of Sweden, Kirk Triplett, Rob Labritz and Brian Gay. Kelly, Labritz and Gay were the only ones of that group to post bogey-free rounds.

Parnevik rang up four birdies plus an eagle at the par-5 17th hole, but he was surprised by how well he played.

“Put it this way, my practice session on whatever it was, Wednesday, Thursday, was horrendous,” Parnevik said. “Then I actually hit it all right this morning. I just told my caddie, ‘See what happens, see what we got.’ So 5 under, definitely, definitely very good.”

CHAMP News: Brett Quigley hangs on to win Constellation Furyk & Friends

Brett Quigley steadied himself over his final four holes and held on for his second PGA Tour Champions title at the Constellation Furyk & Friends on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Quigley entered the day with a one-stroke lead and shot a 1-under 71 at Timuquana Country Club to finish at 11-under 205, edging New Zealand’s Steven Alker by a shot.

Quigley double bogeyed the par-3 14th hole to drop back to 11 under after making birdies at Nos. 1, 3 and 10. But he converted four straight pars to finish his round, and that was all that was necessary to hang on.

The 54-year-old hooked his tee shot at the par-4 18th but still reached the green in two. He described his first putt there as “horrible.”

“I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me, a 6-footer left to right a cup? Could you leave yourself a worse putt?'” Quigley said. “I just stood over it, like, ‘You know what, I’ve done it before.'”

His obstacle at the 14th hole was a horrible lie in the rough.

“I mean, honestly, I could have been there all day,” Quigley said. “I had such a horrible lie to start with, then I thought I made the third shot and it goes right over the green again. I’m like, ‘You’re kidding me.’ No, I wasn’t panicked, I was just more mad at myself for making (the end of the tournament) more interesting.”

Quigley’s previous win came in February 2020 in Morocco.

Alker shot a final-round 68, making his move late with four birdies and a bogey over a six-hole stretch at Nos. 10-15. After winning last year’s Charles Schwab Cup in his first full season on the 50-and-older circuit, Alker was hunting for his second win of 2023.

“The game’s just started coming around,” Alker said. “Ball-striking has been the best the last few weeks it’s been for a while, so tidy that up. This week was just a few more putts here and there, an up-and-down, it was that kind of week. So nice putt there by Quigs on the last, that was a huge up-and-down, so credit to him.”

Like Quigley, Glen Day also double bogeyed the 14th hole to add to a colorful card that included eight birdies and two bogeys. His 68 earned him sole possession of third place at 9 under.

Ernie Els of South Africa (69) and Jerry Kelly (73) tied for fourth at 8 under.

CHAMP News: Brett Quigley leads after 2 rounds at Furyk & Friends

Brett Quigley fired a second consecutive 5-under-par 67 to overtake the lead after 36 holes at the Constellation Furyk & Friends in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday.

Quigley sits at 10-under 134, one stroke ahead of Jerry Kelly, who shot 68 and heads into Sunday’s final round in solo second.

Four players are three shots off the lead in a tie for third, including first-round leader Scott Parel, who shot a 1-over 73 on Saturday.

Quigley seeks his second win on the Champions Tour and his first since 2020. He got off to a blistering start Saturday, carding birdies on the first three holes en route to six for his round. He recorded one bogey, his first of the tournament.

“Pretty nice playing golf,” Quigley said. “Actually, had a great day today playing with Jerry (Kelly) and Parel, so it was an easy round today. But playing nice, doing a lot of things well. Just know I’ve got to keep going, got to keep shooting low out here, but certainly pleased with the first two days.”

Kelly is gunning for his 12th win on tour and first this season. He’s right on the heels of Quigley after posting five birdies against a bogey.

“I’m feeling really good,” Kelly said. “I’m feeling good that I feel like there’s a lot left in the tank after those two rounds. If I keep playing the way I’m playing, this game is going to start finally coming around. I’m excited that I’m in position, and I’m waiting for that really good one and I hope it’s tomorrow.”

Steve Flesch shot 67 to leap 13 spots into the group tied for third at 7 under, joining Miguel Angel Jimenez (2nd round 69), Richard Green (69) and Parel. Flesch’s 67 matched the low round of the day.

Defending champion and Charles Schwab Cup leader Steve Stricker sits T12 after also matching the low round 67.

John Daly withdrew from the event.
