MLB News: Astros clip Twins 6-4 behind 2 HRs from Yordan Alvarez

HOUSTON — By every statistical measure, opting to insert a left-handed pitcher to face Yordan Alvarez is the logical move. The concern is the reality of Alvarez rendering that logic moot.

Alvarez homered twice while Justin Verlander threw six shutout innings as the Houston Astros beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4 in Game 1 of this American League Division Series on Saturday.

Alvarez finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, three runs scored and a walk as the Astros secured a 1-0 lead in this best-of-five series with Game 2 set for Sunday at Minute Maid Park.

Alvarez increased the Astros’ lead to 3-0 with his two-run homer to right field off Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (0-1) with one out in the third inning, a 379-foot blast that followed Alex Bregman being hit by a pitch.

Alvarez was in the middle of a two-run inning in the fifth that enabled Houston to stretch its lead to 5-0 when he walked and scored on a Chas McCormick single.

When the left-handed-hitting Alvarez homered again with one out in the seventh, this time off Twins lefty Caleb Thielbar, his solo shot off the right-field foul pole proved critical. Minnesota had rallied to within 5-4 courtesy of a four-run seventh off Astros right-hander Hector Neris.

Alvarez produced a 1.044 OPS against right-handers during the regular season. However, his robust .892 OPS against southpaws frequently leaves opposing managers facing dilemmas.

“I think, when I’m in there hitting, I don’t think about whether I’m facing a lefty or righty,” Alvarez said. “They’ve got to throw the ball over the middle of the plate.”

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said: “I would say he’s a good hitter against everyone. It’s funny, you don’t normally talk about good players like this. He’s probably really good against righties on average and also very good against lefties.”

Stymied by Verlander, the Twins mounted a rousing comeback in the seventh against Neris, who arguably served as the most reliable reliever for Houston this season. But Matt Wallner (hit by pitch) and Ryan Jeffers (single) put Neris on the defensive immediately, and after rallying with two strikeouts, Neris surrendered a three-run homer to Twins third baseman Jorge Polanco.

Royce Lewis followed by hitting his third homer this postseason, drilling a 1-0 fastball from Neris 409 feet to left. Reliever Bryan Abreu smothered the lingering threat despite allowing a two-out double to Max Kepler in the seventh and a leadoff double to Carlos Correa in the eighth.

Astros closer Ryan Pressly retired the side in order in the ninth for the save.

Verlander (1-0) used a pair of 6-4-3 double plays to navigate a rocky start, including a 23-pitch first inning that included only 10 strikes. But after allowing a leadoff double to Edouard Julien in the third, Verlander bore down. He surrendered two more baserunners and allowed four hits and three walks and posted six strikeouts. Verlander induced eight swings and misses on 25 sliders.

“I think what feels really good is that, when you start off struggling and are able to make some adjustments and find it,” Verlander said, “and the third, fourth and fifth, obviously, was able to have some things click and make some better pitches and get some easier outs.”

Jose Altuve belted his 24th postseason home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the first.

MLB News: Rangers edge Orioles 3-2, take Game 1 of ALDS

BALTIMORE — Josh Jung homered, Evan Carter reached base three times and the Texas Rangers defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday.

Game 2 is set for 4:07 p.m. ET on Sunday.

“It’s always good to get the first one. It’s best out-of-five, though, we know that,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “Come in here and get the first one off a really good team. These guys found a way to get it done.”

Carter had an RBI double, two walks and a run. The 21-year-old outfielder has reached base safely in 10 of 12 plate appearances this postseason to help Texas win all three games it has played. He became the first player in Major League Baseball history to record an extra-base hit, walk and run scored in each of his first three career postseason games.

“He’s a gifted hitter, he’s got a great eye at the plate,” Bochy said. “We move him to the 5 hole and didn’t faze him one bit. Goes out there and took some great at-bats, which we needed off this (pitching) staff.”

Anthony Santander had a homer, single, walk and scored twice for Baltimore, the top seed in the AL playoffs. The Orioles were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

“That’s a tough team to beat if you score two runs,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “We did a great job on the mound, the three runs. We didn’t have the offense today, we didn’t create traffic.”

Six Texas pitchers combined on a five-hitter. Andrew Heaney started for the Rangers and allowed a run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings. Dane Dunning (1-0) allowed one run in two innings. Jose Leclerc pitched the ninth for the save.

Gunnar Henderson led off the inning with a single but was caught trying to steal second.

“He was getting a big lead,” Texas catcher Jonah Heim said. “We know they like to run, and (Leclerc) gave me a good pitch to throw on and the result was good.”

Hyde called the steal attempt “a little miscommunication.”

Orioles starter Kyle Bradish (0-1) gave up two runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked one and recorded nine of Baltimore’s 16 strikeouts.

The start of the game was delayed 73 minutes by rain.

Back-to-back doubles by Adolis Garcia and Carter with one out in the fourth inning gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Heim followed with a line drive single just beyond the reach of a diving Henderson at shortstop and the lead was 2-0. Nathaniel Lowe singled and, with two outs, Leody Tavares singled to load the bases, but Bradish struck out Marcus Semien to end the inning.

The Orioles answered in their half when Santander walked and came all the way around on Ryan Mountcastle’s double into the left-field corner. With two outs, Dunning came on and walked Aaron Hicks before getting pinch-hitter Adam Frazier to pop out.

“I think we came out pretty solid today,” Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins said. “I think we came out with a lot of energy, ready to go. Had a string of good swings, just not a string of hits. I think that was the biggest issue today.”

With one out in the Texas sixth, Hyde brought in right-hander Jacob Webb to face righty Jung and the rookie homered to center on a 1-1 fastball to make it 3-1.

Santander homered to right center with one out in the sixth to pull the Orioles within 3-2.

Austin Hays and Adley Rutschman drew walks against Aroldis Chapman leading off the eighth, but Santander grounded into a double play and Mountcastle struck out.

MLB News: Kolten Wong earns way onto Dodgers’ playoff roster

After a disappointing 2023 season when he struggled and was designated for assignment in August, veteran infielder Kolten Wong rebounded to earn his way onto the Los Angeles Dodgers’ National League Division Series roster.

Wong, who turns 33 on Tuesday, was released by the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 3 and signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers on Aug. 18. He finished the season 9-for-30 with Los Angeles and hit two home runs, including one in his first at-bat with the club Sept. 1. He had eight RBIs.

In 67 games with the Mariners earlier in the season, Wong batted .165 with two home runs and 19 RBIs.

The Dodgers selected Wong to the roster over infielder Amed Rosario, who was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in advance of the trade deadline. Rosario, 27, batted .256 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 48 games with the Dodgers.

In 11 major league seasons, Wong is a career .256 hitter with 86 home runs and 405 RBIs in 1,189 games for the St. Louis Cardinals (2013-20), Milwaukee Brewers (2021-22), Mariners and Dodgers. He won Gold Glove awards in 2019 and 2020.

The Dodgers open the NLDS on Saturday at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

MLB News: Blue Jays manager John Schneider to return in 2024

After an early exit from the playoffs, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider will return next season, general manager Ross Atkins said Saturday.

Schneider, 43, took over as Blue Jays manager in 2022 when Charlie Montoyo was fired after a slow start. Under Schneider, Toronto went 46-28 the rest of the way last season and advanced to the playoffs. They were swept in the wild-card round by the Seattle Mariners.

The Blue Jays continued their improved play this season, going 89-73 in a stacked American League East and finishing in third place in the division. Toronto entered the playoffs as the No. 6 seed, with the season coming to an end in a two-game wild-card series sweep by the Minnesota Twins.

Schneider’s move to take starter Jose Berrios out of Game 2 in the fourth inning came under question. Berrios did not give up a run in three innings of work, then was removed after a walk to open the fourth inning. The Twins scored twice in the inning and went on to a 2-0 victory to win the series.

“John Schneider made that decision,” Atkins told reporters Saturday, while also responding “yes,” when asked if Schneider would return next season.

Schneider has two years remaining on a three-year contract he signed after the 2022 season ended. The contract also includes a club option for a fourth season.

NAS News: 2023 South Point 400: Preview, 5 Best Bets, Longshot Pick

The penultimate stretch of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs begins with the first leg of the Round of 8 with Sunday’s South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The race could determine the first driver to solidify a spot among the final four drivers who will race for the championship in Phoenix on Nov. 5.

William Byron continues to hold the series lead, but by a slim five-point margin over regular-season winner Martin Truex Jr. Truex’s teammate, Denny Hamlin, is another four points behind, with only 27 points separating first from eighth.

The winner of the seventh playoff race has gone on to win the past two championships — Kyle Larson in 2021 and Joey Logano last year. And no driver who has failed to qualify for the playoffs has ever gone on to win the fall race in Las Vegas.

SOUTH POINT 400
Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Date: Sunday, Oct. 15, 2:30 p.m. ET
Distance: 400 miles on 1.5-mile oval
Defending champion: Joey Logano
Cup Series leader: William Byron
TV: NBC
Radio: SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

NASCAR CUP SERIES STANDINGS
1. William Bryron
2. Martin Truex Jr. (-5)
3. Denny Hamlin (-9)
4. Kyle Larson (-17)
5. Chris Buescher (-20)
6. Christopher Bell (-25)
7. Tyler Reddick (-25)
8. Ryan Blaney (-27)

5 BEST BETS
Kyle Larson (+400 at BetMGM)
Larson leads the series with 898 laps led and is a three-time winner this year. A previous winner in Las Vegas, Larson owns a career average finish at the track of 10.5. That includes six top-10s in his past seven appearances. He ranks third at the book, having drawn 9.4 percent of the total bets to win on Sunday.

William Byron (+600)
Byron, whose previous career high was two victories in a season, leads the series with six in 2023. That includes winning in Las Vegas in March, and Byron has four top-10s in 11 starts at the track. Byron is tied for third at the book with 9.4 percent of the total money backing him to win No. 7 of 2023 this weekend.

Denny Hamlin (+625)
Hamlin boasts 11 top-10s in 23 starts in Vegas, with a win in 2021 among four top-10s in his past six starts at the track. He has visited Victory Lane three times this season. “I’m looking forward to Vegas,” Hamlin said. “I don’t always practice well there and don’t always qualify well there, but I always race well. That’s my Kansas 2.0. I don’t know what it is about those tracks, but it seems like it takes me a day to get up to speed.”

Tyler Reddick (+725)
Reddick is the book’s second-biggest liability this week as he leads the grid with 20.8 percent of the total bets and 27.8 percent of the money backing him to win. Why? A two-time winner in his first season with 23XI Racing Toyota, Reddick also owns wins at Las Vegas in the NASCAR Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series. He won a playoff race at Kansas last month and has three top-10s in his past four trips to Vegas.

Martin Truex Jr. (+825)
Truex is the only driver among the remaining eight in the title chase who has multiple victories at Las Vegas. He battled his way into the Round of 8 despite some shaky performances throughout the playoffs thus far (he lacks a top-10 since they began), but he has 14 top-10s in 23 previous starts in Vegas, including in 11 of his past 12 starts.

LONGSHOT PICK
Joey Logano (+2200)
Logano has been eliminated from playoff contention, but he is still the defending champion at this race. He snapped a three-race slump with a fifth-place showing at Charlotte last week, and he earned the pole in Las Vegas in March before spinning on lap on 182 and retiring his car for a 36th-place finish.

ATP News: Andrey Rublev rolls into Shanghai semifinals

0

No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia rolled over Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-3 on Friday to move into the Shanghai Masters semifinals.

Rublev converted five of 10 break chances and saved three of four, finishing the 91-minute match with 14 winners and only six unforced errors. Humbert, the No. 32 seed, had 15 winners and 12 unforced errors but won only 21 of 40 points on his first serve.

Rublev won five straight games in the opening set and broke Humbert’s serve three times in the second set to take a 3-2 edge in their head-to-head series.

Humbert defeated Rublev earlier this month in Beijing.

“The match in Beijing, both of us played great tennis and I had chances. I was serving for the match. He was playing really well that match and I tried to analyse what I did wrong that match,” Rublev said. “I tried to not make the same mistakes today and I did really well. I am happy to win in straight sets. I played a great match and I am happy to win today.”

Up next for Rublev in is quest for the ATP 1000 title is No. 18 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who followed his fourth-round upset of top-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory against No. 22 Nicolas Jarry of Chile in Friday’s quarterfinals.

“It is going to be a tough match,” Rublev said of facing Dimitrov. “He is a friend and I like him and he is a really great player. It is really tough to beat him when he is in this form. This week he is playing really well.”

Dimitrov (11) and Jarry (13) both struck double-digit aces and served well throughout the 1-hour, 39-minute match. Dimitrov never faced a break point and recorded the match’s only service break in the seventh game of the second set.

Dimitrov made just three unforced errors and hit 19 winners, compared to 27 winners and 14 unforced errors by Jarry.

“I think there were many components going the right way today,” said Dimitrov, who lost only four points on his first serve. “For me, he is one of the best servers right now. I’ve played him a couple of times, and I feel like every time it gets tougher and tougher to return against him. In the most important moments, I was able to be just solid, nothing else.”

If Rublev, 25, can win the tournament, he will climb to a career-high No. 4 world ranking on Monday.

Saturday’s other semifinal pits No. 16 seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland against Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan.

MLS News: FC Cincinnati neutralize Messi, eliminate Inter Miami

0

Alvaro Barreal scored in the 78th minute for FC Cincinnati, and Lionel Messi’s return was not enough to save Inter Miami’s season as Cincinnati prevailed 1-0 on Saturday night in rainy Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Inter Miami (9-17-6, 33 points) were eliminated from playoff contention due to their loss combined with CF Montreal’s win over the Portland Timbers.

Messi played for the first time since Sept. 20 after missing two weeks with a reaggravated scar tissue injury in his leg. He subbed on in the 55th minute but could not capitalize on a few chances in Cincinnati’s end.

FC Cincinnati (20-5-8, 68 points) continued the best season in their young franchise history. They had already clinched the Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best record in the regular season.

Roman Celentano made two saves for Cincinnati. Drake Callender had five saves for Miami.

Inter Miami had possession for 61.6 percent of the game, but just two of their 16 shot attempts were on target.

Inter Miami controlled play in the first half and hit the woodwork on three separate occasions. Tomas Aviles hit the crossbar head-on from the center of the box, Josef Martinez pinged the far post with a shot and Benjamin Cremaschi had a shot go off the crossbar before the end of the scoreless first half.

Messi came on for Aviles and quickly won a free kick in scoring range in the 59th minute, but he sent his attempt well over the crossbar.

Cincinnati finally broke through by getting a steal in Miami’s end. Yuya Kubo moved in and fired on Callender, who parried it to his right. But Barreal was charging in on that side and easily deposited it in the net for his fifth goal of the season.

In the 87th minute, Messi got a left-footed shot through some traffic, but it dribbled past the net and out of play.

Messi drew two late fouls near the box, one in the 90th minute and one in stoppage time. On the first free kick, Messi tried to cross the ball in to a teammate and Cincinnati cleared it, setting up a fruitless Miami corner kick.

On the latter, Messi’s shot at goal went over the bar again.

MLS News: D.C. United blank New York City FC, still get eliminated

0

Mateusz Klich scored his fourth and final goal of his first MLS season to lift D.C. United to a 2-0 victory over visiting New York City FC on a night the hosts were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Chris Durkin added his third goal for D.C. (10-14-10, 40 points), which entered its season finale mathematically alive for the postseason but in need of a victory and help elsewhere.

The Black-and-Red got the former but not the latter. Although they had the chance to end the night in possession of the ninth and final Eastern Conference spot, the schedule guarantees that at least one other club will move above the Black-and-Red by the final day after Montreal’s home win against Portland on Saturday.

That means it could be the final match for D.C. manager Wayne Rooney, whose contract expires at season’s end and has yet to ink an extension.

Alex Bono made five saves to keep his fifth clean sheet and an 11th for United, which closed their season without its leading scorer Christian Benteke because of an illness.

D.C. snapped a six-match winless run and halted a six-match unbeaten run for NYCFC (8-11-14, 38 points), which still has a slim chance of reaching the playoffs despite the defeat.

D.C.’s Erik Hurtado and Durkin both had potential first-half goals ruled offside before Klich put his team ahead. Replays showed Hurtado was clearly guilty of the violation. But Durkin’s strike went to a video review before the call ruling another D.C. player had strayed too far was upheld.

Klich finally gave D.C. a deserved lead in the 45th minute after Eric Davis’ diagonal free kick from the left found Steven Birnbaum at the back post. Birnbaum’s header struck the right upright and then rolled across the goalmouth and struck the left upright before Klich reached the rebound for an open finish.

Birnbaum — who has been battling a hip injury for several weeks — exited for Derrick Williams in the 51st minute. But Durkin gave the short-handed D.C. defense some breathing room with an excellent second.

Andy Najar sent a ball down the right flank that was only partially cleared. Durkin reached near the right corner of the penalty area, cut inside to his left, then dragged a shot back across goalkeeper Matt Freese and inside the right post.

MLS News: Late score earns Atlanta United draw with Crew

0

Miles Robinson scored on a header from a free kick in the seventh minute of 90-plus extra time when host Atlanta United stunned the Columbus Crew with a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Kevin Molino committed a foul for the Crew (15-9-9, 54 points) on midfielder Edwin Mosquera. Thiago Almada then sent the ball from the right side, just outside the box, to Robinson in front of the goal for the equalizer to salvage a point for Atlanta (13-9-11, 50 points).

Cucho Hernandez put Columbus ahead in the 65th minute and the Crew was within seconds of a fourth straight win in Atlanta since 2019 before their defense let down.

Hernandez, who was denied three times by Brad Guzan, including twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half, finally scored his 15th goal. Aidan Morris dribbled through two players on the left side, then slipped a pass to the box where Hernandez opened his right foot to receive the ball before a clinical finish.

The Crew dominated the chances coming out of halftime with Morris also testing Guzan in the 58th minute with a line drive.

Eight minutes earlier, Almada’s shot for Atlanta from outside the penalty area resulted in the first save of the match for Patrick Schulte.

The Crew and Atlanta ranked first and second, respectively, in goals in MLS, but neither could find the net in the first half. Columbus had 11 shots but the only one Guzan needed to save was a shot from the right side of the box in the sixth minute by Hernandez.

Atlanta couldn’t produce a goal from its three attempts.

Diego Rossi, who scored for the Crew in a 2-1 win at New England on Wednesday, was active but inaccurate. He had misfires on shots from distance in the ninth minute and headers in the 15th and 23rd as well. Teammate Sean Zawadzki got into the act with a long strike that whizzed past the right post in the 38th minute.

Atlanta’s best chance before the break was Brooks Lennon failing to put a cross from Thiago Almada on frame in the sixth minute.
