Dream rally in fourth quarter to knock off first-place Lynx

Allisha Gray scored a game-high 27 points to help the Atlanta Dream post a 75-73 victory over the visiting Minnesota Lynx on Thursday in College Park, Ga.

Rhyne Howard added 16 points for the Dream (23-13), who have won eight of their last 10 games and sit atop the Eastern Conference standings. Atlanta trails Minnesota by 5 1/2 games for the league’s best record.

Bridget Carleton paced the Lynx (28-7) with 16 points. Jessica Shepard had 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Kayla McBride also chipped in 15 points for Minnesota, which lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. Alanna Smith added 10 points and Courtney Williams led the team with nine assists.

Trailing by six entering the fourth, Atlanta scored the first 12 points of the final quarter, taking a 66-60 lead on Te-Hina Paopao’s triple.

Howard’s second 3-pointer later gave the Dream a five-point advantage at the 1:32 mark, before Smith answered with a triple to pull the Lynx within two. After an Atlanta turnover, Gray rebounded Smith’s missed layup and Maya Caldwell knocked down a pair of free throws to give Atlanta a 75-71 lead with 22.4 seconds remaining.

Shepard’s layup then cut Minnesota’s deficit in half, before Atlanta committed its second eight-second violation in the final minute. Ultimately, the Lynx weren’t able to get a shot off at the buzzer en route to a rare loss.

Leading by two points at halftime, Atlanta began the third quarter on a 6-0 run to jump out to a 48-40 advantage. Layups from Williams and Smith were then followed by McBride’s triple to pull the Lynx’s deficit to a point with 7:20 left in the third.

After Brionna Jones’ layup gave Atlanta a 52-47 lead, Minnesota finished the quarter on a 13-2 run to take a six-point lead into the fourth.

After falling behind by nine points early, Atlanta finished the opening quarter on a 10-0 run – including four points each from Brittney Griner and Howard – to grab a 25-24 edge entering the second quarter.

A string of Atlanta triples from Caldwell, Paopao and Gray extended Atlanta’s lead to 42-32 with 3:58 remaining in the second quarter, before McBride and Smith’s layups were followed by Shepard’s consecutive baskets to help the Lynx trim their halftime deficit to 42-40.

Sky stun Liberty to end five-game skid

Kamilla Cardoso scored 22 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished five assists as the Chicago Sky upset the host New York Liberty 91-85 on Thursday to end a five-game losing streak.

The Sky outshot the Liberty 50 percent to 41.7 percent. Chicago outrebounded New York 42-27, and the visitors had a 52-26 advantage on points in the paint.

Angel Reese, in just her second game since returning from a back injury, added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Sky. Ariel Atkins put up 19 points, and Michaela Onyenwere had 13 points.

Chicago (9-26) had lost 13 of its previous 14 contests.

Jonquel Jones led New York with a game-high 25 points thanks in part to 5-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Sabrina Ionescu scored 16 points, but she went 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. Natasha Cloud had 14 points.

The Liberty — the reigning WNBA champions — fell to 14-5 at home and 22-14 overall.

Chicago improved to 1-2 against New York this season and 4-13 on the road.

The Liberty were again without seven-time All-Star forward Breanna Stewart, who has been idle since she sustained a bone bruise on her right knee July 26. She has promised to return prior to her 31st birthday on Wednesday.

In the final period, the score remained tight until Chicago scored the game’s final eight points. An Atkins free throw with 1:35 left snapped an 85-85 tie. The only points in the final 95 seconds were three free throws each by Atkins and Reese.

New York, in the final two minutes, went 0-for-4 from the floor and also had a turnover.

New York led 23-22 after the first quarter after Marine Johannes sank two 3-pointers in the final 67 seconds.

The Liberty finished the second quarter strong as well. This time, it was Cloud who made a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to give New York a 46-44 edge at halftime.

New York led 68-65 entering the fourth, making it three straight quarters during which the Liberty outscored the Sky by one point before Chicago outscored New York 26-17 in the fourth quarter.

MLS News: CF Montreal trade for Real Salt Lake D Bode Hidalgo

0

Defender Bode Hidalgo, an occasional starter for Real Salt Lake this season, was traded to CF Montreal on Thursday.

In exchange, RSL received $200,000 in 2025 general allocation money (GAM), up to another $150,000 in conditional GAM and a 2026 second-round draft pick.

“We are pleased to welcome Bode to our organization,” CF Montreal senior director for scouting and sports methodology Luca Saputo said. “His profile and versatility give us additional options for our back line.”

A 23-year-old Utah native, Hidalgo came up through the Real Salt Lake academy before making his MLS debut with the club in 2022.

Across four seasons with RSL, Hidalgo produced one goal and one assist in 72 games (36 starts). This season, he started eight of the 18 games he played.

CF Montreal (4-15-8, 20 point) sit next to last in MLS’ Eastern Conference, ahead of DC United only because of goal differential. Real Salt Lake (9-13-4, 31 points) are in 10th in the Western Conference, one point out of a wild-card playoff position.

Tina Charles leads Sun to second win in three days over Mystics

Tina Charles scored 12 of her 21 points in the third quarter on Thursday, lifting the Connecticut Sun to a home-and-home sweep of the Washington Mystics with a 67-56 victory in Uncasville, Conn.

Charles made 6 of 8 shots from the floor in the third quarter and finished 9 of 14 for the game. She also had six rebounds for the Sun (8-27), who followed up their 80-69 victory in Washington on Tuesday to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Charles played in her 464th game to move past Tangela Smith into 10th place all-time in league history.

Former Mystic Aaliyah Edwards scored 10 points and Olivia Nelson-Ododa added eight off the bench.

Connecticut benefited from a season-high 15 steals and turned 20 turnovers into 20 points. The Sun also held a 34-27 edge in rebounds and 38-28 advantage in points in the paint.

Sonia Citron scored 15 points and fellow rookie Kiki Iriafen added 13 to go along with 10 rebounds for the Mystics (16-20), who fell two full games behind the Seattle Storm for the eighth and final playoff spot. Washington dropped to 6-12 on the road this season.

Connecticut was nursing a seven-point lead at halftime before Charles sank a pair of mid-range jumpers to start the third quarter. She mixed in an off-balance hook shot with a 19-foot shot on consecutive possessions before adding another pair of mid-range jumpers.

Nelson-Ododa and Edwards each converted a short basket and a free throw to extend the Sun’s lead to 62-47 with 7:07 remaining in the fourth quarter. Connecticut wasn’t seriously challenged the rest of the way.

Stefanie Dolson sank a 3-pointer to trim the Sun’s lead to 21-16 early in the second quarter before Connecticut ignited a 9-0 run. Washington, however, halved its deficit with a 10-3 run to end the quarter.

MLS News: Austin FC finding better offensive rhythm ahead of trip to CF Montreal

0

Austin FC look to continue their newly found offensive spark when they visit CF Montreal on Saturday.

The Verde (9-8-8, 35 points) have moved into a Western Conference playoff position on the strength of a five-match (2-0-3) unbeaten streak in regular-season play.

Austin’s 24 goals are the second fewest in MLS. Brandon Vazquez remains the club’s scoring leader with five goals despite suffering a season-ending torn ACL on July 9.

While head coach Nico Estevez admitted that Vazquez’s injury “creates a different situation” for Austin FC, he has been impressed by how his club has picked up the offensive slack.

“In the last eight (regular-season) matches, we have scored 13 goals, which is more than half of what we had scored previously with everyone healthy,” Estevez said. “Therefore, I believe that the team is making progress.”

Owen Wolff has been the biggest recent contributor with three goals in his last four matches. The Verde will be missing a key member of the midfield Saturday, however, as Daniel Pereira is suspended due to caution accumulation.

Montreal (4-15-8, 20 points) has scored 25 goals to Austin FC’s 24, but the Verde have been much better defensively. CF Montreal have allowed the fifth-most goals (48) in the league, while Austin’s 29 goals conceded is tied for the second-fewest total.

Prince Owusu leads Montreal in both goals and goal contributions (11 goals, 4 assists).

CF Montreal is on a season-best three-match (1-0-2) unbeaten streak, with draws in their last two home matches. Montreal is 1-7-5 on its own field this season, with a league-low eight home points.

With the playoffs out of reach, most of CF Montreal’s focus has been on the team’s rebuilding efforts. Montreal traded for Real Salt Lake defender Bode Hidalgo on Thursday and is reportedly close to acquiring Spanish midfielder Ivan Jaime.

In related moves, Montreal traded veterans Caden Clark (to D.C. United) and Joel Waterman (to the Chicago Fire) this week in exchange for over $1.2 million in cash and general allocation funds.

The Clark trade “is in line with our sports strategy and gives us additional flexibility in this transfer window,” said Montreal managing director Luca Saputo in a media release.

PGA News: Russell Henley posts 61 to lead Tour Championship amid easy conditions

0

ATLANTA — East Lake Golf Club, where, oh where, is thy sting?

In the first round of the FedEx Cup playoff finale on Thursday, most of the 30-player field at the Tour Championship excelled at the historic course.

Russell Henley led the way with a 9-under-par 61, including three straight birdies to end the round.

World No. 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is just two strokes behind at 7-under 63. Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Robert MacIntyre of Scotland and Tommy Fleetwood of England were three strokes back at 6-under 64 on a crowded leaderboard.

In total, 22 players were under par, six players were even and just two players were over par. The combined score of the field was 82 under par.

Perhaps it was the heavy rain that pummeled the Atlanta area Tuesday and Wednesday that helped the golfers. Round 1 was played under preferred lies rules due to evening downpours. This allowed balls on the fairways or other closely mown areas to be lifted, cleaned and placed in a preferred spot.

The course was set up to be more challenging with pins tucked in corners of the greens. It turns out, that didn’t matter.

“Just with conditions right now, flags barely moving and it’s rained a lot over the last day, so things that you can’t control,” Morikawa said. “It’s just Mother Nature. When conditions are like that, we’re going to be firing at pins. That’s just the nature of what we do.

“Lift, clean and place, you’ve got a lot of wedges on this golf course. Can’t really do much to tuck (pins) away because even if you do tuck them in corners, we’re firing away with a wedge.”

With more inclement weather due on Friday, second-round tee times were moved up for an 8 a.m. start. The final hour of the first round was played under a weather alert with lightning 10 miles away.

Henley finished with seven birdies and an eagle at No. 6. Five of his birdies came on the back nine, including the final three holes. Henley made a total of 207 feet, four inches worth of putts on the round.

“Just felt like I was at peace if I missed,” Henley said. “I felt like I was clear on my reads. Last week, I felt like I played really well and didn’t give myself a bunch of looks because I couldn’t figure out how far the ball was going and struggled a little bit on the looks of those greens, getting the reads down.

“Just felt a little more clear in my mind on what I thought the ball was going to do and just felt like, yeah, at peace if I missed it. Just kind of free-wheeled it a little bit.”

Some players thought there may have been an even lower score to be had.

“I started with three birdies, so there was 59 out there at that point,” Fleetwood said. “Unbelievable score (by Henley). Just unbelievable score.”

Scheffler, who won last week’s BMW Championship for his fifth title of the season, birdied three of the final four holes in a bogey-free round.

Playing in the final pairing with Scheffler, Northern Ireland star Rory McIlroy had a stroke of incredible luck at the par-5 18th.

He hit his third shot out of a bunker and it came out much hotter than he expected. It sailed over the green but ricocheted off the stands and headed back onto the green, settling to 17 feet of the pin. McIlroy sank the ensuing birdie putt for a 4-under 66.

As soon as Scheffler made his birdie putt at No. 18, the horn sounded for the course to be cleared.

“I have never rooted so hard for somebody’s ball to come back, outside of my partner in a team event,” Scheffler said of McIlroy’s shot. “… I’m watching his ball fly towards the grandstand. I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, we’ve got no way of finishing this thing (before the horn),’ so I was relieved when I saw it come back on the green.”

McIlroy, who entered second in the points standings, was tied for eighth at 4 under with Akshay Bhatia, the last man in the 30-player field, along with Ludvig Aberg of Sweden and Ben Griffin.

Maverick McNealy (1-over 71) and Austria’s Sepp Straka (4-over 74) were the only golfers to exceed par.

Fresh off record performance, Paige Bueckers looking for Wings win vs. Storm

On the heels of her record-breaking 44-point performance, Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings host Seattle Friday night in Arlington, Texas.

Bueckers set the record for most points in a game by a WNBA rookie in an 81-80 loss to the LA Sparks Wednesday night. Afterwards, she acknowledged the achievement, but said she would have preferred a victory.

“I have always prided myself and the team on winning, so that’s obviously the main goal,” Bueckers said in the post-game press conference. “Honestly, I think I am just most proud of this team and the way we fight. This team means so much to me.”

Dallas (9-27) has lost eight of its last nine games and has been without standout Arike Ogunbowale with knee tendinitis for the last four games. Bueckers missed several games mid-season with a knee injury. Her 19.7 points per game average ranks fifth in the WNBA.

“People have gotten to see the struggles and injuries and the time I couldn’t play and for me to have that story and have people still follow me and still believe in me means a lot,” Bueckers said. “I am extra grateful for it and I will never take it for granted.”

The Storm (18-18) will be playing the second game of an important five-game road trip. Entering Friday, Seattle has a half-game lead on the Sparks for the last WNBA playoff spot.

Seattle has lost seven of its last nine games, but did overpower the Chicago Sky Tuesday night 94-88. Seattle has its own special rookie in 19-year-old center Dominique Malonga, who has hit double figures in six of her last eight games off the bench.

“There is nothing they can do with her when she decides what she’s going to do,” said Storm star Skylar Diggins about Malonga after the win over the Sky. “Every night she breaks records, like (being) the youngest player in WNBA history with 100 field goals. She is just scratching the surface. I tell her all the time she’s going to be a star for the next 20 years in this league.”

Seattle brought in Brittany Sykes from Washington in a trade August 5, but it hasn’t helped them in the win column. Sykes has averaged 14 points for Seattle since coming over in the deal, but the Storm are just 2-4 with her in the line-up.

Nneka Ogwumike leads the Storm with 18.4 points a game.

This will be the fourth and final meeting of the two teams Friday. Seattle has won two of three.

MLS News: Columbus, New England aim to get back on track

0

The Columbus Crew and New England Revolution meet Saturday knowing playoff position is not the most pressing concern.

Neither has played well for long stretches and their postseason aspirations, while different, are becoming harder to envision.

The Crew (12-5-9, 45 points) sought to win the Supporters’ Shield after a 7-1-3 start that put them two points behind Vancouver for the overall lead.

Since then, a 5-4-6 mark puts Columbus sixth in the Eastern Conference, two points behind Orlando City for the fourth and the final spot for home field in the first round of the playoffs with eight matches left.

“You don’t want to peak too early then drop off,” Crew midfielder Max Arfsten said. “I think the best is yet to come in terms of our team form and that’s what we’re searching for.”

New England (7-12-7, 28 points) was 10th, one point below the playoff line, after the first weekend in May but are now 11 points back.

The Revolution are 1-6-1 in the past eight matches with the win coming two matches ago in the return of U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper Matt Turner for the 2-0 result over D.C. United on Aug. 9.

He played seven seasons for the Revolution before leaving for Europe in 2022 and is the club’s all-time leader in winning percentage (.587).

“He’s a very good goalkeeper. He gives us confidence,” Revolution defender Mamadou Fofana said. “I hope he continues to play like this to help the team.”

The Crew are also looking for a boost from the possible debut of Palestinian national team forward Wessam Abou Ali after being acquired from Egyptian Premier League champion Al Ahly Sporting Club on July 26.

He had been hampered by a hamstring injury but said Tuesday he believes he will be available Saturday. The 26-year-old scored 38 goals in 60 matches in all competitions for his former club.

“I felt like I had an opportunity to come here and help the team,” he said. “They were maybe missing out on a striker in that position.”

WTA News: WTA roundup: No. 1 seed Liudmila Samsonova upset in Cleveland

0

Romania’s Sorana Cirstea hit seven aces, saved the only break point she faced and took down No. 1 seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of Tennis in the Land on Thursday in Cleveland.

Cirstea won 25 of 32 first-service points (78.1 percent) and advanced to the semis to face Russian Anastasia Zakharova, who skipped the quarterfinals via walkover against German Eva Lys.

Due to rain interruptions the past two days, the Round of 16 matches finally wrapped up Thursday. Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic upset British No. 7 seed Katie Boulter 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4; second seed Xinyu Wang of China rallied past Australia’s Talia Gibson 1-6, 6-2, 6-3; Ann Li won an all-American match against Iva Jovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-3; and France’s Elsa Jacquemot edged Argentina’s Solana Sierra 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Li and Jacquemot then met in the quarterfinals, where Li forged a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win. Wang also earned a second victory of the day when she overtook Golubic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Abierto GNP Seguros

No. 3 seed Diana Shnaider of Russia saved five match points and absorbed her opponent’s 10 aces before knocking off Belgian No. 5 seed Elise Mertens 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) in a three-hour quarterfinal in Monterrey, Mexico.

Shnaider neutralized Mertens’ first match point in the 10th game of the second set as she forced a tiebreaker she went on to win. Then, Mertens had a 5-3, 40-love lead in the third set only for Shnaider to fend off defeat three straight points. She saved one final match point later in that game before flipping the tables and dominating a second tiebreaker.

Shnaider’s semifinal opponent will be Alycia Parks, who handled Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova 6-2, 7-5. Parks produced nine aces and converted four of eight break points.

No. 2 Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia advanced with a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 victory over No. 6 Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic. Alexandrova’s semifinal foe will be the winner of the late Thursday night quarterfinal between Croatian Antonia Ruzic and Czech Marie Bouzkova.

WNBA breaks single-season attendance record

With three weeks left in the regular season, the WNBA already has broken the single-season attendance record by surpassing 2.5 million fans, the league confirmed Thursday.

The total attendance so far of 2,501,609 was set with 13 teams playing a total of 226 games through Wednesday.

The previous record of 2,364,736 fans was established in 2002 with 16 teams playing a total of 256 games.

Although the league’s spike in popularity largely has been attributed to the arrival of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark in 2024, it’s worth noting that Clark has missed 22 games due to injuries this season.
