MLS News: Thomas Muller’s late penalty kick lifts Whitecaps over St. Louis

0

Thomas Muller’s penalty kick in the 14th minute of second-half stoppage time Saturday night lifted the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-2 home win over St. Louis City SC.

It was the first goal in MLS for Muller, the German star playing just his second match with Vancouver (14-6-7, 49 points). He got his chance after a video review detected teammate Mathias Laborda being tripped in the box by Mykhi Joyner.

Muller stutter-stepped to the spot and wired a shot just under the crossbar, enabling the Whitecaps to get the full three points from a match they trailed deep into the second half until Daniel Rios equalized in the 79th minute.

Conrad Wallem’s foul on the Whitecaps’ Ali Ahmed set up the tying goal. Sebastian Berhalter took a free kick just inside the penalty box on the deep left side and Rios rose above a defender to flick the ball on a header into the right corner.

Vancouver carved out major advantages in shots and possession time. The Whitecaps outshot the guests 22-11, including an 8-4 edge in shots on frame, and had the ball for 59.2 percent of the match.

But St. Louis (5-16-6, 21 points) was able to make the most of its relatively few opportunities, taking a 2-1 edge in the 73rd minute. Sang Bin Jeong fed a beautiful ball to Joao Klauss down the pitch’s middle and he converted with a spinning lefty kick from the box, his eighth goal in the last 12 fixtures.

St. Louis also scored first in the 14th minute off a pretty sequence. Wallem delivered a well-struck cross into the middle of the box and Eduard Lowen converted on a header that bounced into the net’s right corner.

The lead stood until the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time, when Vancouver equalized after referee Fotis Bazakos nailed Chris Durkin for a foul in the box against Tristan Blackmon. Brian White stepped to the spot and converted into the right corner as goalie Roman Burki dove fruitlessly the other way.

It was White’s 14th goal of the year.

Seattle look to stay in playoff hunt, avoid season sweep against Mystics

The Seattle Storm have stayed in the playoff hunt after a rough stretch, but keeping it going while amid a string of road games won’t be easy.

The Storm try to bolster their status again when visiting the Washington Mystics on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s important, especially in a stretch like this,” Seattle coach Noelle Quinn said. “On the road. With a lot of games, not a lot of days in between to kind of rest and recover.”

The Storm (19-18) has won three of its last four games, including the first two stops on a five-game road swing.

“I think the group understands the sense of urgency we have to have,” Quinn said. “This stretch we’ve had a lot of good production from a lot of different places.”

Seattle trounced host Dallas the last time out 95-60 behind rookie Dominique Malonga’s 22 points. With 62 points scored by reserves, the Storm set a single-game franchise record for bench points.

“The hot hand could be anyone,” Quinn said. “It’s going to be a team effort. I think right now we’re finding ways to be ‘one,’ starting with our defense.”

Malonga is the first Seattle player with three games of 20 or more points off the bench in the same season.

“She works on it, she reps it,” Quinn said of Malonga’s variety of scoring methods. “She has a natural feel for the things you’re seeing.”

The Mystics (16-21) are on a three-game losing streak after Saturday afternoon’s 91-81 home loss to the Las Vegas Aces.

Washington’s Kiki Iriafen’s 21 points Saturday ended a stretch when Sonia Citron had been the team’s leading scorer in five straight games. Iriafen has a 10-game string as the top rebounder for the Mystics. She pulled down a game-high 15 on Saturday.

“Regardless of how the game outcome was, I think I learned a lot,” Iriafen said.

Coach Sydney Johnson altered his Mystics’ starting lineup by giving Alysha Clark the start Saturday.

“Just in terms of her leadership, her IQ, she’s just a really versatile and giving player,” Johnson said. “I was going to make a move at some point.”

Washington won both previous games against the Storm, prevailing 74-69 and 69-58 last month.

MLS News: Robin Lod’s goal, assist power Minnesota United past struggling Real Salt Lake

0

Robin Lod scored the go-ahead goal and also had an assist to lead Minnesota United to a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night in Sandy, Utah.

Joaquin Pereyra also scored for Minnesota (14-6-8, 50 points), which also tallied an own-goal from RSL defender Brayan Vera. Dayne St. Clair made five saves for the Loons, who won their second straight match and closed to within three points of first-place San Diego FC in the Western Conference.

Victor Olatunji, acquired from Sparta Prague of the Czech League on Aug. 6, scored his first goal for Real Salt Lake (9-14-4, 31 points), which suffered its third straight defeat and lost for the fourth time in the last five matches. Rafael finished with one save for RSL, which played without suspended star midfielder Diego Luna.

Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Pereyra’s deflected corner caromed into the middle of net off the left hip of Vera.

Real Salt Lake tied it, 1-1, in the 15th minute on Olatunji’s first goal. Samuel Junqua set up the score with a cross from the left side of the box that Olatunji, driving toward the goal, chipped inside the far right post with his right foot.

RSL nearly took the lead in the 27th minute on a free kick above the box by Noel Caliskan that a leaping St. Clair deflected off the crossbar.

Minnesota took a 2-1 lead nine minutes later on Lod’s fourth goal of the season, a left-footed shot from the left side of the box off a spinning Nicolas Romero pass that scooted inside the far right post.

The Loons extended the lead to 3-1 in the 51st minute on Pereyra’s fourth goal, a left-footed shot from the middle of the box into the right side of the net off a Lod setup.

Lynx look to sweep two-game set over Fever

The Minnesota Lynx will go for back-to-back victories over the Indiana Fever when the teams tip off Sunday evening in Minneapolis.

Minnesota (29-7) is coming off a 95-90 win over Indiana (19-17) on Friday. That game took place in Indianapolis, and the teams traveled north to finish a two-game set.

Jessica Shepard will try to stay hot after her all-around dominance last game. Shepard tallied the second triple-double in Lynx history, as well as the fastest one in WNBA history, against the Fever as she finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.

“If Jessica is not a Lynx this year,” said coach Cheryl Reeve, “we’d be in trouble.”

The Fever could be in trouble if they can’t find a way to slow down Shepard.

Indiana coach Stephanie White said her players need to pay more attention to detail in order to avoid defensive breakdowns for a second consecutive game.

“Turnovers for scores (were) part of it,” White said. “You can’t set your defense with that.”

“We had moments where we had some breakdowns in personnel D, and it hurts us. They’re the best team in the league right now for a reason, and they make you pay when you make those mistakes.”

Both teams have played without their top playmakers as of late. Napheesa Collier has missed seven games for the Lynx because of a sprained ankle, and Caitlin Clark has missed the past 14 games for the Fever with groin and ankle injuries.

Kelsey Mitchell leads the Fever in scoring with 20.6 points per game. Aliyah Boston is the team’s top rebounder with 8.3 boards per game.

For Minnesota, Kayla McBride is the second-ranking scorer behind Collier. She is averaging 15 points per game and provides a threat from the 3-point line, shooting 40 percent on the year so far.

Courtney Williams ranks third on the Lynx with 13.8 points per game, and Alanna Smith rounds out the top four scorers with 9.8 points per contest.

A spate of injuries has forced Indiana to look elsewhere to try to replenish its roster. On Sunday, the Fever signed guard Aerial Powers to a seven-day hardship contract.

Powers most recently played for the Golden State Valkyries. Across parts of nine seasons in the WNBA, she has averaged 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

MLS News: After trading early goals, LAFC and Dallas FC settle for draw

0

A stunning first MLS goal by Son Heung-min was matched by a Logan Farrington equalizer just shy of the quarter-hour mark as host FC Dallas and Los Angeles FC played to a 1-1 draw Saturday night in Frisco, Texas.

LAFC (11-6-8, 41 points) captured its third straight unbeaten result (1-0-2) and seventh in its last eight matches (4-1-3) and ended the evening in fourth place in the Western Conference.

Dallas (7-11-9, 30 points), who drew for the second straight match, pulled within five points of Austin FC for the ninth and final playoff spot in the West.

Son, starting for the second straight match, ensured his first MLS goal was a memorable one.

After Los Angeles was awarded a free kick not far from the outside of the box, the South Korean international laced a blistering shot past Dallas goalkeeper Michael Collodi for a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.

The Los Angeles lead lasted about seven minutes, though, as Farrington tied it in the 13th minute. The Dallas forward collected a Patrickson Delgado pass, ventured into the scoring area and fired it past LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to tie things up. It was Farrington’s fifth goal of the season.

Los Angeles, seeking back-to-back wins, had several chances to produce a match-winner late in the second half. In the 88th minute, Denis Bouanga’s shot deflected off a Dallas player and off the crossbar. Then, in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, Collodi made a spectacular diving save on David Martinez’s attempt on goal.

Collodi finished with five saves for Dallas. Lloris was credited with one save.

Petar Musa, Dallas’s leading scorer (13 goals), was a second-half substitute after leaving at halftime of his team’s 1-1 draw at Austin FC on Aug. 16.

Igor Jesus was forced to exit in the 24th minute for LAFC after an apparent leg injury. Los Angeles will also be without Ryan Hollingshead (yellow-card accumulation) for its match against San Diego FC on Aug. 31.

Marina Mabrey helps Sun torment former Sky teammates in win

Bria Hartley and Tina Charles each had 23 points, and Marina Mabrey scored 20, as the Connecticut Sun never trailed en route to their season-high third straight win, 94-84 over the host Chicago Sky on Saturday.

An ex-Sky player, Mabrey, who also registered eight assists, set the pace by scoring 16 in the first half. Charles added eight points in the third quarter and Hartley hit a key 3-pointer with 2 minutes left in regulation to give the Sun (9-27) a 10-point cushion after Chicago (9-27) used a 23-6 surge to turn a 73-52 deficit into a four-point contest midway through the fourth.

Charles added 10 rebounds for Connecticut, which shot 51.5 percent while winning for the fourth time in five games.

Kia Nurse had 19 points with five 3-pointers, Kamilla Cardoso scored 18 while notching seven rebounds plus five assists, and Angel Reese added 11 points with 11 rebounds for the Sky, who shot 49.2 percent from the floor, but 15-of-26 from the free-throw line and never recovered from a rough first quarter.

Chicago coach Tyler Marsh was ejected with 8:05 remaining in the second quarter when he darted on to the floor and in the face of official Tim Greene in frustration following a no-call from a physical play involving the Sky’s Elizabeth Williams.

Mabrey, who played 63 games with the Sky in 2023 and part of ‘24, scored Connecticut’s first seven points and had 12 on 5-of-6 shooting in the opening quarter. The Sun went 11-of-18 from the field to lead 28-13 after one period.

The Sky, meanwhile, started 1-of-7 from the field and missed their first six free throws of the contest.

Connecticut led by as many as 20 in the second quarter, but even with Marsh’s ejection, the Sky hung tough and held a 28-27 scoring advantage in the period. Chicago ended up shooting 48.6 percent during the first half and trailed 55-41 at the break.

The Sky, who broke a five-game skid with a stunning 91-85 victory at New York on Thursday, have lost 14 of 16.

MLS News: San Jose tops Houston, stays above playoff line in the West

0

Cristian Arango and Preston Judd each scored goals and the visiting San Jose Earthquakes remained above the playoff line in the Western Conference with a 2-1 victory Saturday over the Houston Dynamo.

The Earthquakes (9-11-8, 35 points) continued their offensive assault, tying San Diego FC for the Western Conference lead in goals scored with 52. The victory ended San Jose’s eight-match losing streak at Houston.

Daniel made three saves for San Jose, which improved to 2-1-0 in August after going 0-3-2 in MLS play in July, while also getting eliminated from U.S. Open Cup play.

Antonio Carlos scored a goal for the Dynamo (7-12-8, 29 points), who could have pulled even with the Earthquakes in the West standings with a victory. Jonathan Bond made two saves for Houston, which is 0-1-2 since the end of Leagues Cup play.

The Dynamo were on a run of three consecutive draws in MLS play going back to July 19.

The Earthquakes took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, when Arango scored on a long cross by DeJuan Jones from the right corner that Preston Judd let pass through with a slight touch. Arango’s sliding goal was his 12th of the season to tie Josef Martinez for the team lead.

The Dynamo appeared to tie the score in first-half stoppage time but Ezequiel Ponce’s goal was denied when he was ruled offside.

San Jose made it 2-0 in the 64th minute when a deflected ball rolled toward the top of the Dynamo penalty area Ian Harkes sent a rocket through traffic that deflected off Judd’s leg and got past Bond.

The Dynamo received a gift in the 72nd minute when Carlos’ soft header off a corner kick slipped through the hands of Daniel to cut the deficit in half.

San Jose won without Martinez on the bench to start the match. He came on as a substitute in the 79th minute for Arango after Judd started in his place.

A’ja Wilson continues dominance, leads Aces past Mystics

A’ja Wilson poured in 36 points and reached another WNBA milestone as the visiting Las Vegas Aces pulled away to stretch their winning streak to 10 games, defeating the Washington Mystics 91-81 on Saturday afternoon.

Wilson made 14 of 22 shots from the field with one 3-point basket and drained 7 of 8 free-throw attempts to go with 13 rebounds.

Wilson, who has led the team in scoring and rebounding in four consecutive games, has reached the 30-point mark in 10 games this season to become the first player in WNBA history with multiple seasons of 10 or more games with 30 points.

Reserve Dana Evans added 21 points for the Aces (24-14), who began a three-game road swing. Jackie Young had 10 points as Las Vegas shot 52.3 percent from the field.

Kiki Iriafen scored 13 of her 21 points in the first half to lead the Mystics (16-21), who lost their third game in a row. Shakira Austin provided 18 points, and Sonia Citron had 13 points. Iriafen also had 15 rebounds.

Wilson also added to her league-leading total of blocked shots with two rejections. She had 27 points through three quarters. The Aces scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to go up 76-61. Wilson made the final basket for the Aces with 1:44 to play.

Las Vegas finished 10-for-20 from beyond the 3-point arc, while Washington was 4-for-14 from long range. Chelsea Gray and Young delivered eight assists each for the Aces.

Wilson had 17 points on 7-for-11 first-half-shooting as the Storm led 44-39 at halftime.

The Aces turned a 23-8 first-quarter deficit into a 37-32 second-quarter lead.

The Mystics ended the half shooting 40.7 percent from the field and committing eight turnovers, though they were saved by a 16-5 scoring advantage at the free-throw line.

MLS News: Four first-half goals for Nashville in rout of Orlando City

0

Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar scored two goals apiece in a four-goal first half for host Nashville SC in a dominating 5-1 rout over Orlando City SC on Saturday night.

Nashville (15-8-5, 50 points) improved to 10-1-3 at home, ended a three-game losing streak and moved within two points of second-place FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference.

Surridge moved past Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi (19 goals) in the race for the Golden Boot by getting his 19th and 20th goals. He scored twice for the fifth time this season in MLS matches and the ninth time in his career.

Mukhtar notched his 13th and 14th goals, scored twice for the second time this season and finished with his 17th career multi-goal showing in MLS matches.

Surridge scored in the second minute and the 43rd minute while Mukhtar struck in the 17th and 40th. Jeisson Palacios scored in second-half stoppage time while Mukhtar, Josh Bauer and Jacob Shaffelburg collected two assists apiece.

Luis Muriel scored in the 76th minute for Orlando City before getting ejected for a red card a few minutes later. Orlando City (13-7-8, 47 points) saw a four-game winning streak stopped and they hold a one-point lead over Miami for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis made three saves. Orlando’s Pedro Gallese allowed five goals on nine shots.

Surridge opened the scoring when Orlando’s Dagur Thorhallsson had a pass from midfield headed away by a defender near the Nashville net. Nashville quickly moved up the field and Mukhtar finished off a shot from about 10 yards out after getting by Orlando’s Kyle Smith and Rodrigo Schlegel.

Nashville capitalized on another miscue for a 2-0 lead. After Schlegel fanned on a header following a Nashville throw-in, Mukhtar blasted a shot into the top right corner.

Mukhtar made it 3-0 by getting by Smith and Schlagel and reaching the bottom right corner after getting a pass from Shaffelburg.

Surridge capped the dominant half by finishing off a header with his back to the net after beating Schlegel to the ball.

PGA News: Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Cantlay providing drama atop Tour Championship leaderboard

0

ATLANTA — Tommy Fleetwood is still in position to win his first PGA Tour tournament — one of the biggest — but he’s sure making it interesting.

Fleetwood lost his lead at the Tour Championship after hitting it in the water on the par-3 15th hole in the third round of the FedEx Cup playoff finale at East Lake Golf Club Saturday. He ended up making double bogey to fall to 14-under par. At the same time, Patrick Cantlay made the second of two straight birdies on the 17th hole to move to 15-under and take the lead that Fleetwood had enjoyed all day, at times by as many as three strokes.

At the end of the day, Fleetwood overcame the mishap, and he and Cantlay stand tied for the lead at 16-under going into Sunday’s final round.

Fleetwood (67) bounced back from the water ball with a birdie on the 16th hole to move back into a tie with Cantlay at 15-under. Cantlay (64) answered back with birdie on the 18th to move to 16-under. Fleetwood then birdied the 17th and parred the 18th.

Cantlay, the 2021 FedEx Cup champion, birdied the final three holes and four of the last five.

Russell Henley (69), who shared the second-round lead with Fleetwood, is third at 14-under. Keegan Bradley (63) is fourth at 13-under.

Scottie Scheffler is still lurking. The world’s No. 1 golfer and leader in the FedEx Cup point standings started the third round five shots back of Fleetwood and Henley. He trended in the wrong direction with bogeys on the first two holes. However, birdies in five of the next eight holes righted his round. He stands in fifth at 12-under (66).

Bradley added suspense with big drama inside the tournament. The U.S. Ryder Cup captain stands at 13-under to move into serious contention. His round included an eagle from the fairway on the par-5 sixth hole and ended with three straight birdies. Bradley has six captain’s picks to make for the Ryder Cup team on Wednesday. The question is whether he should choose himself, becoming the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. That year’s international competition was also played at East Lake.

“I was so tired Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,” said Bradley, who admitted to being preoccupied with Ryder Cup decisions and strategy this week. “I was really just truthfully trying to get through this week. This is a bit surprising, but just I really played spectacularly today. I’m really proud of this round.”

Fleetwood is close enough to taste his first PGA Tour victory — again. His near misses have been well documented. He entered the Tour Championship fifth in the points standings, the highest-ranked player in the 30-player field without a win. In the past two weeks, he has finished tied for fourth and tied for third in the playoff events, the St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship. Fleetwood also has seven top-10 finishes this year and a total of 30 top-fives without a victory.

“As I was reading my putt on 15, there’s a scoreboard directly behind me,” Fleetwood said. “I was kind of aware of scores or where I was, but that was staring straight at me. Even with the double bogey at the time, Patrick hadn’t finished with his birdie, so I was still joint leader, still in great position. It was just one bad swing on a very tough hole and that’s what can happen.”

“I was really pleased with how I bounced back. I still had three holes to play and still 21 holes of the tournament, and I still felt in a very good frame of mind. It’s obviously great when it comes off, like you make a couple of birdies after it, but I still felt pretty good.”

Cantlay has started to work with renowned putting coach Phil Kenyon, and it has paid dividends.

“Just trying to find a little edge, trying to get a little better,” Cantlay said. “I was talking with a couple guys on tour that work with him, and they spoke very highly of him. I thought I’d give it a shot.”

Rain fell throughout the day, necessitating the preferred lie rule for the third straight day, but play was never in jeopardy of being halted.

Scoring was up significantly in the third round after two days of record scoring. In the first two rounds, a tournament record was set with 13 rounds of 64 or better, reached after just 36 holes. Only Bradley and Cantlay went that low on Saturday. In the first two rounds, only five players shot over par. On Sunday, nine players did so.
