NFL News: Steelers All-Pro DT Cameron Heyward practices with team

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward suited up and participated in team activities for the first time on Tuesday since missing training camp and preseason games in a hold-in over his contract.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said Heyward was involved in team sessions after he was observed earlier in uniform and active in individual practice periods. Heyward, who was not made available to media, had attended some earlier practices in street clothes since training camp opened this month.

Reports on Tuesday did not say the change indicated progress in Heyward’s contract situation. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection talked to reporters on Aug. 11 and said that he wanted to be paid more this season after a career year in 2024, when he made first-team All-Pro honors for the fourth time.

Heyward signed a two-year, $29 million extension with the Steelers last September. It keeps him with the team through the 2026 season.

Defensive player salaries have spiked upwards and Pittsburgh linebacker T.J. Watt received a three-year, $123 million deal in the offseason with $108 million guaranteed. The $41 million annual average set a record for defensive players.

The 36-year-old Heyward wants his piece of the financial pie. He has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh since the Steelers selected him in the first round (31st overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Heyward had 71 tackles, eight sacks and a career-high 11 pass breakups last season — the latter of which led all defensive linemen in the league.

“I’m looking to be valued,” Heyward said on Aug. 11. “… I know what I bring to this team and what I’m capable of on and off the field, so it’s hard for me, after the year I’ve had (in 2024), to really justify playing at the number I’m playing at.

“I understand. I signed a contract last year, but to be completely honest with you, when I signed that, I told him when I have an All-Pro year expecting me to come back and you can look at the contract and see what it was. But I think everybody kind of giggled a little bit, but in my head, I used it as motivation to go out there and prove it.”

Heyward has 88.5 career sacks in 211 games (176 starts). He will likely warrant heavy Pro Football Hall of Fame consideration after his career ends.

NFL News: This is 40: Joe Flacco embraces new opportunity as Browns QB1

If one thing is easier in the NFL as a 40-year-old quarterback, it’s applying the mentality that every game could be your last.

Joe Flacco has embraced another chance with the Cleveland Browns during training camp and preseason practices, as he welcomed another opportunity following an up-and-down 2024 with the Colts as Anthony Richardson’s primary backup.

So when the Browns made it official, naming Flacco the starter entering the 2025 season, Flacco knew better than to waste time celebrating.

“I don’t know if I was very emotional about it,” Flacco said, “but listen, you don’t take for granted opportunities in this league. Especially to get one at this point of my career is definitely special. But, like I said, it’s pretty much business as usual and trying to get better.”

The Browns open the season against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7, a full 15 years after Flacco made his first career start against the same team as the quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens. It will be his first opening week start since 2022 with the Jets.

But Flacco said he feels “as good as ever” physically while the Browns held him out of preseason games to make sure that health status didn’t change in a meaningless exhibition.

With Deshaun Watson unlikely to play this season due to multiple Achilles surgeries, and Kenny Pickett sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring injury, there wasn’t much of a competition for the job in Cleveland. Fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders threw two TDs in the preseason opener before going down with an oblique injury. Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel has shown upside but also experienced growing pains while assimilating to an NFL offense.

“Joe performed really well in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it, in the walkthrough, just what he’s able to bring to the football team,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He’s earned that role.”

General manager Andrew Berry said recently the Browns could consider keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Stefanski was not ready to discuss the makeup of the full squad, or even the depth chart order behind Flacco.

“As you make decisions like this, you talk to the guys and you let them in on your thought process,” Stefanski said. “But all of them should consider themselves to get ready as a starter. That’s how you have to handle being a backup in this league.”

NFL News: Bucs WR Jalen McMillan to miss weeks with ‘severe’ neck sprain

Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan likely will miss several weeks recovering from a neck injury and was ruled out for Tampa Bay’s Week 1 game by head coach Todd Bowles on Tuesday.

“He’s got a severely strained neck,” Bowles said. “He’s going to miss some time.”

McMillan made a big impact after Chris Godwin was lost for the season in October, but will open the season on injured reserve. McMillan had seven touchdown receptions in the final five games as a rookie.

The Tampa Bay Times reported McMillan might be sidelined until midseason, pointing to the bye in Week 9 as a potential return date. McMillan, entering his second season, was hurt Saturday in the preseason game at Pittsburgh when he collided with Steelers cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. McMillan landed on the field helmet-first before his neck and back followed to the ground.

Godwin has not participated in practice and could be on a similar timeline for playing in his first game of 2025.

He returned to the Bucs in free agency in March but continues to rehab from a dislocated ankle in Week 7 of the 2024 season that required surgery. Godwin could be placed on the reserve/PUP list to start the season, which would require him to miss at least the first four games.

“We’re going to need guys to step up with Chris down and then Jalen going down,” Bowles said Tuesday. “A lot of guys have stepped up and we’ve got to see them step up even more. The depth was well-needed and we still have some decisions to make after this game against Buffalo.”

First-round pick Emega Egbuka has turned in a stellar training camp and preseason, including a touchdown reception against the Steelers. He’s likely to start alongside veteran Mike Evans.

NFL News: Colts tab Daniel Jones QB1; QB2 Anthony Richardson ‘respects’ call

The Indianapolis Colts are turning to free agent acquisition Daniel Jones over fellow former first-round pick Anthony Richardson as the team’s starting quarterback.

“He’s our starting quarterback for the season,” head coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday. “I feel confident in his abilities.”

Signed to a one-year, $14 million contract in the offseason, Jones joined the Colts to take part in an open competition for the job.

“When they both came in, I made it very clear that this is going to be a battle, and they’re going to compete for the job,” Steichen said Saturday after Indianapolis’ preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. “And like I said, I’m going to make the decision I feel is best for the football team.”

It’s a second chance at an NFL starting job for Jones, one that puts Richardson’s future with the Colts in question. Steichen said “staying healthy” is a factor if Richardson is to continue to develop.

Richardson said Tuesday he “respects the decision” and promised to keep working.

“They feel like he’s a better fit for the team and the outcome of us winning. You have to respect it and keep working,” Richardson said. “It doesn’t undermine any of the work I’ve put in. It doesn’t say I haven’t improved. I’m proud of the improvement I’ve made.”

Jones, 28, was the No. 6 overall pick by the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft. He suffered a season-ending ACL tear in 2023 but returned in time to start the 2024 season as the team’s No. 1 quarterback.

“Excited for the opportunity,” Jones said on Tuesday. “As a competitor, you want to be on the field. … My approach, my preparation, all that stuff stays the same. I’m fired up, I’m excited.”

He was benched after New York’s 2-8 start to the season and was replaced by Tommy DeVito, prompting Jones to request to be released last November. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings and was assigned to the practice squad. He did not play in any games with the Vikings, who plan to have J.J. McCarthy under center to start the 2025 season.

Jones has 14,582 passing yards, 70 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions in 70 career games (69 starts). He has 2,179 rushing yards with 15 TDs. His record as the Giants’ starter was 24-44-1.

Richardson, 23, has struggled with injuries and accuracy as a passer since being selected by the Colts with the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

For his career, Richardson has completed 50.6 percent of his passes for 2,391 yards and 11 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 15 games. He has also been sacked 21 times and committed 12 fumbles.

Richardson has been limited to 15 starts over his first two NFL seasons due to a myriad of injuries, including to his shoulder, oblique, foot, back and finger, as well as a concussion.

The Colts open the 2025 season Sept. 7 against the visiting Miami Dolphins.

Mercury erupt for 30 points in 4th to claim win over Valkyries

Kahleah Copper poured in a game-high 25 points, four teammates also scored in double figures and the Phoenix Mercury’s depth wore down the short-handed Golden State Valkyries in the fourth quarter en route to a 98-91 triumph Tuesday night in San Francisco.

Satou Sabally chipped in with 17 points, Natasha Mack 14, Alyssa Thomas 13 and DeWanna Bonner 12 for the Mercury, who won their second straight to start a three-game trip.

Riding outstanding 3-point shooting, the Valkyries led by as many as 12 and were still up 73-68 entering the fourth period before the Mercury dominated the final 10 minutes.

Bonner and Sabally each drilled a 3-pointer among five points apiece as Phoenix opened the final quarter with a 10-4 burst that gave the visitors a 78-77 lead.

The Mercury then dominated the weary Valkyries at both ends of the court, pulling away with a 30-point period while limiting Golden State into 1-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

The hosts had been 9-for-18 on 3-pointers while retaining the upper hand throughout the first half. Veronica Burton had 18 of her team-high 24 points and seven of her season-high 14 assists over the first 20 minutes.

Copper shot 9-for-20 overall and 5-for-9 from deep as the Mercury hit 49.3 percent of their field goal attempts and 11 of 31 (35.5 percent) from beyond the arc.

Mack complemented her 14 points with seven rebounds, three on the offensive end, while Thomas also had a game-high nine rebounds to go with a team-high eight assists in the well-rounded Phoenix attack.

Playing without backcourt mate Tiffany Hayes, one of five Valkyries regulars out of action, Burton’s double-double was her third of the season.

Carla Leite added 15 points and Kate Martin, who shot 4-for-16 on 3-pointers, had 14 for the Valkyries, who lost their second straight after a four-game winning streak. Janelle Salaun and Laeticia Amihere also reached double figures in scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

After scoring a season-high-tying 59 points in the first half, Golden State shot just 3-for-15 on 3-pointers in the second half and added just 32 points to its total. The Valkyries shot 41.6 percent overall.

Aces rally past Dream in potential postseason preview

The Las Vegas Aces, led by 32 points from A’ja Wilson, rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to overtake the Atlanta Dream 74-72 and post an eighth consecutive win.

Neither team had led by more than five points entering the fourth quarter, but Atlanta held a 61-57 edge and scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to go up 67-57 with 8:44 remaining. But Las Vegas then went on a 13-0 run to claim a 70-67 edge, capped by a Jewell Loyd 3-pointer with 4:09 to play. Wilson scored six points in that pivotal stretch.

After the Dream pulled even at 72 on a Rhyne Howard 3-pointer, it was Wilson time again for Las Vegas. She drained a mid-range jumper to account for the winning margin with 1:15 to play.

Atlanta had two possessions to answer, but Howard missed a 3-point attempt with 51.9 seconds left and a short runner in the paint with 4.2 seconds left. Brittney Griner got the carom and attempted a tip-in, but it was off the mark and the Aces’ Kierstan Bell snared the rebound to seal the win.

Las Vegas (22-14) forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter, including a trio of shot-clock violations, to pull within a half-game of the Dream and the New York Liberty, both 22-13, in the race for the No. 2 playoff seed behind the Minnesota Lynx.

Las Vegas shot 45.3 percent (29-for-64) while holding Atlanta to 40 percent (26-for-65).

Wilson’s 32 points represented her third straight 30-plus-point effort in a run toward a potential fourth WNBA MVP award. Wilson shot 12-for-24 and added 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jackie Young added 16 points and seven boards. Chelsea Gray logged eight points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.

Atlanta was led by Howard, whose 19 points included 4-for-11 3-point shooting. Allisha Gray added 16 points and six rebounds. Griner tallied 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Dream will return to action on Thursday when they host league-leading Minnesota. The Aces will also play at home, facing the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday.

Angel Reese returns, but Storm outscore Sky

Skylar Diggins scored a game-high 24 points and Nneka Ogwumike added 21 to lift the visiting Seattle Storm to a 94-88 victory against the Chicago Sky on Tuesday.

Playing the opener of a five-game road trip, the Storm led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter. Chicago drew within seven with 2:22 left before Seattle closed out the Sky in Angel Reese’s return to the lineup from a back injury.

Ogwumike drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 89-79 with 35.5 seconds to go. Diggins and Ogwumike connected on three treys apiece.

Seattle (18-18) stretched its lead for the eighth and final WNBA playoff spot to one game over the idle Los Angeles Sparks.

Chicago (8-26) dropped into a tie with Dallas for the second-most losses in the league. The Sky fell to 1-11 since the All-Star break, but welcomed Reese back to the fold. The second-year forward finished with 19 points and seven rebounds in her first action since July 29.

Reese, who entered play averaging a WNBA-best 12.6 rebounds per game, had missed seven straight contests and nine of the past 10.

She contributed six points and four boards in the first half while getting re-acclimated early, scoring a fast-break layup 46 seconds into the game off a Rachel Banham steal.

Dominique Malonga (15 points), Brittney Sykes (12) and Ezi Magbegor (11) also scored in double figures for the Storm. Magbegor grabbed eight rebounds and Malonga added seven.

Ariel Atkins tallied 19 points for Chicago. Kia Nurse followed with 13 points, Kamilla Cardoso chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and six assists and Elizabeth Williams contributed10 points and nine boards.

Seattle took a 46-34 lead into intermission, with Diggins (12 points), Ogwumike (11) and Gabby Williams (nine) sparking a balanced attack. In the opening half, the Storm shot 57.6 percent from the floor compared to 35 percent for the Sky, who surged to a four-point advantage in the first 1:28 and again late in the first quarter before fading.

Chicago struggled to a 6-for-22 shooting effort in the second quarter, getting outscored 26-14.

Seattle clinched the season series with Chicago, earning its second victory in as many games. The Storm are set to host the Sky on Aug. 30.

Sabrina Ionescu’s late 3-pointer seals Liberty’s victory over Lynx

Sabrina Ionescu finished with 17 points, a season-high 11 assists and four rebounds and helped the New York Liberty fend off a Minnesota Lynx comeback effort by hitting a deep 3-pointer with 33.8 seconds left to secure an 85-75 victory on Tuesday night in the final regular-season meeting between the teams.

Ionescu was only 5-of-18 from the field but her biggest shot clinched New York’s first win in four meetings with the Lynx and improved the Liberty (22-13) to 5-6 since losing Breanna Stewart to a bruised right knee on July 26.

New York saw its lead sliced to 79-75 when Natisha Hiedeman sank a trey with 2:08 remaining. After Natasha Cloud missed from long range with 44.5 seconds left, Ionescu grabbed the offensive rebound and sank a 31-footer while falling to the floor for a 82-75 lead.

Ionsecu then split a pair of free throws and finished it off by finding Kennedy Burke for a layup with 32.1 seconds.

Jonquel Jones posted her 100th career double-double and reached 4,000 career points by leading New York with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Emma Meesseman added 13, while Leonie Fiebich and Cloud finished with 10 points apiece as the Liberty trailed once in the opening minute and shot 43.9 percent from the field.

Courtney Williams scored 17 points but missed two mid-range jumpers in the final two minutes as the Lynx (28-6) saw a six-game winning streak halted. Natisha Hiedeman added 16 while DiJonai Carrington and Maria Kliundikova contributed 11 apiece as the Lynx shot 40.8 percent from the floor.

New York started quickly as Ionescu found Burke for a layup with 1:56 left for a 24-12 lead. The Liberty settled for a 24-20 lead through the opening quarter after Carrington sank a 3-pointer with 14.2 seconds left.

After Jessica Shepard brought Minnesota to within 37-35 with a bucket, Ionsecu hit two trifectas in the final 3:45 in a 13-2 run to give New York a 48-37 halftime lead.

Cloud hit a trey to open a 15-point lead in the opening minute of the third, but Minnesota chipped away, getting within 54-46 on a hoop by Hiedeman with 5:25 left and 60-51 on her 29-foot 3-pointer two minutes later. Two free throws by Burke gave New York a 62-51 lead with 2:29 left and the Liberty held a 66-60 lead into the fourth after Williams sank a trey with 4.3 seconds remaining.

PGA News: Rory McIlroy: Tour Championship format not settled, match play was discussed

0

At least for this year, the 30 players who advanced to the Tour Championship this week in Atlanta are starting from scratch. No FedEx Cup points were carried over, and no player will get a head start over any other.

Asked Tuesday if getting rid of the “starting strokes” arrangement left the PGA Tour with the “best format” for its season championship, Rory McIlroy merely said it’s the format they have for this week.

“I’m maybe part of the minority. I didn’t hate the starting strokes,” Northern Ireland’s McIlroy told reporters at East Lake Golf Club. “I thought that the player that played the best during the course of the season should have had an advantage coming in here. But the majority of people just didn’t like the starting strokes.”

McIlroy sat on the player advisory committee that sorted out what to do about the often confusing Tour Championship format. In May, the tour announced that it was eliminating starting strokes, calling the move “an important first step in the evolution of our postseason.”

McIlroy said it was done with the fans in mind, though he also can hear the argument that Scottie Scheffler, who finished the points race a runaway No. 1, may deserve more than a two-stroke head start as he’s gotten in years prior.

Then McIlroy revealed that the PAC discussed match play among its several options to further evolve the Tour Championship.

“Look, there was a lot of other stuff on the table. Match play was on the table, and that got canned for this year,” McIlroy said. “That might be brought back up in the conversation for next year or the year after.

“I think it’s just hard for the players to reconcile that we play stroke play for every week of the year but then the season-ending tournament is going to be decided by match play. I think it was just hard for the players to get their heads around that.”

The PGA Tour had one official match-play event from 1999-2023, after which the WGC Match Play was squeezed off the schedule.

Though many argue that a match-play bracket only determines the best golfer of the week, not the best golfer of the year, McIlroy won the 2015 WGC Match Play as the No. 1 overall seed. Former World No. 1 Dustin Johnson did the same in 2017, and Scheffler pulled out a victory in 2022 as the fifth overall seed.

Golf Digest on Tuesday laid out a mock match play bracket that would give the top eight seeds, including Scheffler and No. 2 McIlroy, a first-round bye as a reward for their season-long excellence, not unlike first-round byes for top seeds in the NFL playoffs.

“I don’t know, maybe that will be on the table again, who knows,” McIlroy said of match play. “Yeah, look, it’s a 72-hole stroke-play event, and that’s what we play week in and week out. That’s what’s going to determine the winner.”

The FedEx Cup was introduced in 2007, and McIlroy has won the most of anyone with three (2016, 2019, 2022). He’s gearing up to try for a fourth, and he doesn’t mind starting out the week without an advantage over the 30th golfer in the field.

“I don’t think I ever started this tournament in the starting strokes era at 10 under, like in the No. 1 spot,” he said. “If anything, I’m in a better position than I have been the last few years, so that’s a nice thing.

“But no, I think with the format change or with whatever the money is, we’re still playing for the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup, and that’s enough to play as hard as possible for.”

Sun’s reserves spearhead upset victory over Mystics

Saniya Rivers led Connecticut with 17 points off the bench, as the Sun’s reserves totaled 45 points to fuel an 80-69 road win over the Washington Mystics Tuesday night.

The win marks only Connecticut’s seventh victory of the year — its first on the road since May 30 — and deals a blow to a Washington team firmly in the playoff hunt.

Connecticut forced 15 Washington turnovers and capitalized, scoring 21 points off the giveaways. The Mystics notched only 10 points on 10 Sun turnovers.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa scored 15 points off the bench for Connecticut, while Tina Charles was the only starter in double-digits with 13 points.

All-Star rookie guard Sonia Citron tallied 19 points, passing Chamique Holdsclaw for the most points in a rookie season in Mystics history. Shakira Austin added 12 points.

The Mystics and Sun made a trade at the deadline, with Washington sending forward Aaliyah Edwards to Connecticut in exchange for guard Jacy Sheldon.

Sheldon was out with an ankle injury, while Edwards added eight points and four rebounds off the bench.

The Sun ended the first half on a 9-0 run and extended their scoring stretch to 13-0 in the third quarter. An Austin layup at the 8:49 mark of the third snapped the streak, cutting the lead to 51-37.

Citron cashed a three-pointer with 6:53 left in the quarter to cut Connecticut’s lead to single digits. Washington pulled within six points before a pair of Nelson-Ododa free throws and a Leila Lacan jumper put the Sun up 59-49 at the 2:20 mark.

The Sun preserved their lead in the fourth, with each team notching 18 points in the frame.

Washington and Connecticut traded runs in the first quarter.

After the Sun gained a 5-4 lead, the Mystics rattled off 11 unanswered to claim a 15-5 advantage. Jade Melbourne, in her 100th career game, started the game 4-for-4 from the field and led the Mystics with eight points in the first half.

Connecticut, fueled by Rivers, outscored Washington 16-8 over the remainder of the first frame. The Sun continued their run in the second quarter, taking a 47-35 lead into halftime.

Connecticut’s bench contributed 28 of its 47 first-half points, while Washington got only seven points off the bench in the first two quarters.
