MLS News: NYCFC acquire D Raul Gustavo from Hungarian side

0

New York City FC announced the acquisition of defender Raul Gustavo from Hungarian side Ferencvarosi TC on Friday.

He is under contract through 2027, and the team holds options for 2028 and 2029.

The center back, a native of Brazil, made 24 appearances and scored two goals with Ferencvarosi TC, which won the league title last season and featured in the UEFA Europa League.

“We’re happy to welcome Raul Gustavo to New York City,” sporting director David Lee said. “(He) brings physical presence, composure on the ball and valuable European experience.”

Gustavo, 26, started his career with Brazilian club S.C. Corinthians Paulista and also appeared in 18 matches on loan with Esporte Clube Bahia, a sister team of NYCFC in the City Football Group.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for me, and I’m grateful to be part of a Club with vast ambition,” Gustavo said. “I’ve followed the growth of MLS and New York City’s journey, and I’m motivated to contribute to the team’s success.”

MLS News: Rested Crew take aim at Djordje Mihailovic, Toronto FC

0

After a longer than expected return to MLS play, the Columbus Crew hope the added time can help a revised roster regain momentum for the stretch run beginning Saturday at new-look Toronto FC.

Toronto (5-13-7, 22 points) will mark the home debut for U.S. men’s national team midfielder Djordje Mihailovic after a trade with the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 7.

He had the second assist on the goal by DeAndre Kerr in second-half stoppage time that helped the Reds forge a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union last Saturday.

“He’s very capable of finding windows very quickly and executing the right passes at the right weight,” Toronto coach Robin Fraser said of Mihailovic.

Toronto also may see the return to game action of goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who missed the match versus the Union while in concussion protocol. He returned to training on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the last league match for the Crew (12-5-8, 44 points) was a 3-1 home loss to Orlando City on July 25 in which they allowed three goals in the final 15 minutes.

Three Leagues Cup matches followed before the Crew were scheduled to play at New York City FC last Saturday. That match was postponed to Sept. 17 because Citi Field was unavailable due to poor field conditions.

During the Leagues Cup, defender Malte Amundsen returned for the first time since a knee injury on May 31 and midfielder Andres Herrera played twice after missing five MLS matches while a loan agreement was completed.

Also, on July 26, the Crew acquired forward Wessam Abou Ali as a designated player from Egyptian Premier League champion Al Ahly Sporting Club. He had 38 goals and 10 assists in 60 appearances for Al Ahly.

He arrived in Columbus on Wednesday but his status for Saturday is unknown.

Amundsen could key a resurgence for the Crew, who have allowed nine goals while going 2-2-0 in the past four MLS matches.

“We know what he can bring. Fans know what he can bring,” Crew defender Yevhen Cheberko said. “He will definitely help us, and just more people for the rotation will maybe save some energy.”

TRUCK News: Corey Heim rules at Richmond for 7th Truck win of year

RICHMOND, Va. — Corey Heim earned a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series-best seventh victory of the season in the eero 250 at Richmond Raceway on Friday, but the first short-track victory for the regular-season champion took a fast Toyota truck, some real perseverance and a bit of racing good fortune.

The 23-year-old Georgia native started from pole position in the series’ regular-season finale on the historic three-quarter mile venue, but he quickly had to deal with his front-row starting mate, Ty Majeski, who pressed him all night. Majeski swept both stage wins, and his race-best 143 of the 250 laps out front were more laps led than he turned in the entire season.

Ultimately, Majeski’s shot at his first win of the year took a setback when he was collected in an incident with his ThorSport Racing teammate Matt Crafton while leading late in the race.

Although Majeski recovered and raced forward, Heim, who led 75 laps in the No. 11 Tricon Garage Toyota, got to the front when it mattered most and drove away. Heim took the lead for good with 20 laps remaining and then held off the reigning series champ Majeski by 0.923 seconds at the checkered flag.

With the victory, Heim becomes the youngest driver in series history to get to 18 career wins.

“Felt like we were the best truck at Martinsville (Va.) and North Wilkesboro (N.C.), but they got away from us, and we kind of got this one back,” Heim said of his short-track struggles this season. “I didn’t feel like we were the best truck tonight. I feel like the 98 was really stout, but obviously had a run-in and got some damage.

“Being there when it counted was the first goal, and we were and just able to execute from there.”

The race formally set the 10-driver playoff field. Heim, Layne Riggs, Chandler Smith, Daniel Hemric, Tyler Ankrum and Rajah Caruth advanced to the six-race playoffs via victories. Majeski, Grant Enfinger, Kaden Honeycutt and Jake Garcia topped the rest of the series in points to earn their championship chance.

Garcia, 20, had to hold off former series champion Ben Rhodes and highly touted rookie Gio Ruggiero on Friday. Ultimately, a seventh-place finish was enough to give Garcia a 19-point edge on Rhodes and 31-point margin on Ruggiero, who made a valiant run, taking second on that final restart with 35 laps remaining despite starting last in the 35-truck field.

“Just did my best to run a smart race the second half,” said Garcia, driver of the No. 13 ThorSport Racing Ford. “Even in the first half there were moments we were four wide and that’s not gonna work out at Richmond. There were some points I had to bail out and lost a lot of spots on the restarts just being really conservative.

“But our truck was really fast and I think we could have finished top five. I want to thank all my guys. They worked really, really hard on this truck like they do all the trucks and gave me a really fast piece today.”

Riggs finished third in the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford with Spire Motorsports teammates Sammy Smith and Corey LaJoie rounding out the top five positions.

Ruggiero, Garcia, Rhodes, Chandler Smith and Honeycutt completed out the top-10. Honeycutt will compete for the driver’s title and his No. 52 Halmar Friesen Racing Toyota will contend for owners points.

The 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs begin on Aug. 30 with the Sober or Slammer 200 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. NASCAR Cup Series regular Ross Chastain won the 2024 race at Darlington. This is the first year the historic track has hosted the series in a playoff contest.

NAS News: Ryan Preece earns pole for NASCAR’s Cook Out 400

RICHMOND, Va. — Ryan Preece delivered in the clutch, claiming the second pole position of his career Friday afternoon at Richmond (Va.) Raceway as he tries to earn a playoff position with only two regular-season races remaining before the 16-driver NASCAR Cup Series championship field is set.

It’s certainly a good omen for Preece heading into Saturday night’s Cook Out 400 (7:30 p.m. ET on USA Network, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at the three-quarter mile track.

His No. 60 Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing Ford Mustang turned a fast lap of 121.381 mph, edging 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick by .087 of a second. The 34-year-old Connecticut native Preece last earned the pole in 2023 at another Virginia short track, Martinsville Speedway.

“I felt like it was on my bingo card, I’m not sure about everybody else’s,” said a smiling Preece, who trails RFK teammate Chris Buescher by 34 points for the final playoff points position.

“That Ford Mustang was really sporty. I felt good about it in practice and it showed up for qualifying. We have a great starting spot and tomorrow we’ve just got to go execute and hopefully we can win this race.”

“At a place like this I would rather be out front. … I’d rather be the one leading. Tomorrow is about getting out front, getting the clean air and setting my pace.”

It was also a particularly good day for the small Kaulig Racing team, whose veteran driver A.J. Allmendinger qualified third-fastest for his best career start at the track. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, a Virginia native and hometown favorite, will roll off fourth. Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott rounds out the top five.

Among those contending for the final three playoff positions, Reddick needs to earn just 30 points Saturday night to finalize his spot. Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman, who holds a 60-point advantage inside the standings, will start ninth. Buescher, in the 16th and final playoff points position, qualified 12th.

Thirteen drivers have claimed Playoff positions with victories this season. A new race winner this week at Richmond or next week in the regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway would leap over Reddick, Bowman and Buescher in the playoff eligibility.

Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron, the NASCAR Cup Series championship leader, qualified 14th. He holds a 42-point advantage on his teammate Elliott for the regular- season championship and the 15 bonus points that pays following the Daytona race.

Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon, the defending race winner, will start 11th. Teammate Kyle Busch, a six-time winner at Richmond, will roll off 28th. Three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano will start 38th.

ATP News: Carlos Alcaraz survives rough third set to reach Cincinnati Open semis

0

In the third and final set of his Cincinnati Open quarterfinal match against Andrey Rublev on Friday afternoon, Carlos Alcaraz committed 15 unforced errors and authored three double faults.

And, yet, the second-seeded Spaniard found a way to claim a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over the ninth-seeded Russian in Mason, Ohio.

“I maintained positive thoughts all the time, even though I lost focus a few times during the second set,” Alcaraz said. “Playing someone like Andrey, when you lose focus on two or three points, it (can) cost you the set or almost the match. I just stayed strong mentally and that’s what I’m most proud of.”

Alcaraz squandered a 5-3 lead in the third set, but then he held his serve and then broke Rublev for the fourth time to set up Saturday’s semifinal against No. 3 Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Alcarez prevailed, in part, because Rublev made even more miscues in the third set. He racked up five double faults and 17 unforced errors in the third after committing just three double faults and 17 unforced errors in the first two sets combined. That included a double fault on match point that had Alcaraz pumping his fist over his 15th straight victory in an ATP Masters 1000 event.

“It’s just (about) accepting the moment, accepting that I am playing a third set, accepting that it’s going to be a really tough battle, and I love that,” Alcaraz said. “It was extreme conditions, but I just love playing in front of this energy. I am just really happy to live these kinds of experiences, so I just remind myself of that in these moments.”

Zverev maintained his dominance of Shelton, moving to 4-0 against the fast-rising American since their first meeting in Cincinnati last summer with a surprisingly routine 6-2, 6-2 triumph.

Shelton seemed to be in control early, leading 40-0 in the third game of the first set. But Zverev took advantage of four consecutive errors, and when a Shelton volley went wide, he had the break he needed.

Zverev would earn another break in the fifth game and cruise to the first-set victory. The same pattern repeated itself in the second set, as Shelton was broken in games 3 and 5 and watched his nine-match winning streak come to a screeching halt in only 1 hour, 17 minutes.

Zverev only made 13 unforced errors in the match and won 15 of Shelton’s 19 second-serve points.

Zverev’s biggest concern of the night was his own health. He called for the doctor at 2-1 in the second set as he appeared to be struggling with this breathing.

“Right now I’m not feeling too great… I’m not sure what happened,” the 2021 Cincinnati champion said. “I came out today and probably felt the best I’ve felt in a few months. Was feeling the ball incredibly well from both sides. In the first set I started feeling not so great and it got progressively worse. But I’m in the semi-finals and I’ll do everything I can (to) be 100 percent tomorrow.”

Zverev leads Alcaraz, 6-5, in the all-time series and they have split outdoor, hard-court matches, 2-2. The two have not faced off since November 2024.

New Mexico State, Greg Heiar settle wrongful termination suit

New Mexico State and former men’s basketball head coach Greg Heiar settled a wrongful termination suit on Friday with the university agreeing to pay him $600,000.

Heiar was fired on Feb. 14, 2023 – less than one year into a five-year contract with a $300,000 annual base salary.

Heiar’s dismissal came less than one week after New Mexico State cancelled the rest of the team’s season and placed the coaching staff on paid leave while the school investigated a police report that accused three players of hazing and sexually assaulting one of their teammates. Those incidents reportedly occurred from July 2022 to Feb. 2023.

On Nov. 19, 2022, New Mexico State forward Mike Peake shot and killed a New Mexico student in Albuquerque. While police ruled Peake acted in self-defense because he had been lured to the New Mexico campus by four students – including victim Brandon Travis – Heiar and members of his staff appeared to play roles in stunting the police’s initial investigation.

Heiar had his team board a bus to leave Albuquerque even though the police asked to interview three New Mexico State players. A member of Heiar’s staff, Lorenzo Jenkins, was found in possession of Peake’s gun while Peake’s phone later was found with an unnamed NMSU administrator.

Heiar’s contract called for a $1.2 million buyout if fired without cause, but NMSU denied that buyout by claiming he was fired “with cause.” Heiar, who currently serves as head coach for Trinity Valley (Tex.) Community College, claimed he was innocent.

In the wake of the settlement, Heiar’s attorneys sent a statement to KRQE-TV in Albuquerque.

“On behalf of our client, Greg Heiar, we are pleased to announce that a settlement has been reached in the arbitration of Coach Heiar and New Mexico State University. Coach Heiar is pleased that this matter is now fully and finally resolved to our satisfaction, and excited to continue his coaching career. Coach Heiar wishes NMSU, the men’s basketball program, and the Aggie fans all the best going forward.”

LPGA News: Jeongeun Lee5 rides birdie streak to Portland second-round lead

0

South Korea’s Jeongeun Lee5 parlayed five straight birdies on Friday into a one-stroke lead at 12-under-par 132 through two rounds of the Standard Portland (Ore.) Classic.

Her hot streak at Columbia Edgewater Country Club began on the par-5 fifth. When she completed her run at the ninth hole, she sat at 12 under for the tournament. She added a birdie on the 12th and a bogey at No. 13 to finish at 5-under-par 67 on the day. Gurleen Kaur and Australia’s Grace Kim are one shot back.

“I wanted to make as many chances to birdie,” Lee5 said. “Starting on hole 5, it was a par 5, so it seemed there was more of an opportunity to birdie, so I tried to focus on that. With the start of that birdie, I think I was able to have that momentum and great energy to continue making birdies until hole 9. In the second half, I had a mistake on my tee shot at hole 10, but I was able to save par and I think I was able to end my round well overall.”

Lee5 has yet to take home an LPGA event championship, though she does have seven top-10 finishes to her credit.

The 36-year-old’s best finish this season was a tie for 16th at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open in May.

“I’m sure all of the players have the same or similar thoughts, but when we are playing well, we expect it to continue,” Lee5 said. “So, I want to really concentrate and focus going into the weekend. The past two rounds I had great energy, good shots, and good putts, so I want to continue this throughout the weekend and hopefully have a great tournament.”

Kim fired a 7-under 65 — notching six birdies, one eagle and one bogey — to tie Thailand’s Jaravee Boonchant for the day’s second-best round. Kaur stayed in second place for the second consecutive day as she posted five birdies and a bogey on her way to a 68.

“I feel like this is probably the best two rounds that I’ve had on the LPGA like before the weekend as well, so I’m just really excited for that,” Kaur said. “Obviously I want to continue the momentum for the weekend.”

Three players are tied for fourth at 10 under: Japan’s Akie Iwai (67), Thailand’s Pajaree Anannarukarn (67) and South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai (68).

Rounding out the Top 10 are four golfers sitting at 9 under. Germany’s Aline Krauter shot a second-round 66 to climb into a tie with Yealimi Noh (67), Amelia Lewis (68) and China’s Miranda Wang (70).

First-round leader Adela Cernousek, a rookie out of France, fell into a tie for 27th with her second-day score of 3-over 75. On the flip side, Rose Zhang fired an 8-under 64 — the day’s best round — to offset her 3-over 75 in the first round to share 27th place with Cernousek and 11 others.

Defending champion Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot a 74 and missed the cut at 3-over 147.

Juli Inkster, 65, came up just short in her bid to become the oldest player to make a 36-hole cut in an LPGA event. Inkster bogeyed Nos. 12 and 13 to finish at 2-over for the round and 1-under 143 for the tournament – one shot on the wrong side of the cut line.

NHL News: Red Wings sign D Travis Hamonic to 1-year contract

Free agent defenseman Travis Hamonic inked a one-year, $1 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.

Hamonic, who turns 35 on Saturday, recorded seven points (one goal, six assists) and a minus-16 rating in 59 games last season with the Ottawa Senators.

Hamonic has totaled 242 points (53 goals, 189 assists) and 774 penalty minutes in 900 career games with the New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Senators.

He was selected by the Islanders in the second round of the 2008 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut in November 2010.

CFL News: Roughriders host Tiger-Cats in potential Grey Cup peek

Is Saturday’s showdown between the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the West-leading Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina a potential Grey Cup preview?

That answer won’t be formulated until late November, but it’s not wrong to opine that the matinee matchup could help shape the second half of the CFL season.

“If you’re a CFL fan, you really look forward to watching a game like this,” Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris said to the Regina Leader-Post.

Saskatchewan (7-1) enjoyed a bye week after a 34-6 thumping of Montreal Aug. 2 in Quebec. It owns a 1 1/2-game advantage over Calgary and a game in hand to boot. The Roughriders boast the league’s best scoring differential at plus-59.

Hamilton (6-3) possesses a one-game lead on Montreal in the East, although its six-game winning streak ended on Aug. 7 with a 41-38 home loss to B.C. The TiCats are 4-0 within their division and might have the league’s best pitch-catch combo in Bo Levi Mitchell and Kenny Lawler.

Mitchell has thrown for a league-high 2,856 yards and 21 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Lawler has been his favorite target with 783 yards, good for second in the league, and a CFL-best eight scores.

“We’re talking about one of the best receivers in the league,” Saskatchewan coach Corey Mace said of Lawler. “Sometimes (Mitchell) is going to trust his guy and he’s going to put it up there.”

The Roughriders counter with the 39-year-old Harris, who’s completed at least 70 percent of his passes in 11 straight games dating to last season and has hit 13 touchdown passes against only four picks in 2025.

“I don’t think there’s a quarterback in football that gets the ball out quicker,” Hamilton coach Scott Milanovich said. “His accuracy is as good or better than ever. All those years of experience are enabling him to know exactly where he wants to go with the football quicker.”

Saskatchewan is aiming for a season sweep after rallying in the second half for a 28-23 win on June 14 in Hamilton. That was actually below both teams’ per-game averages. The TiCats score 32.3 ppg to lead the league and the Roughriders are second at 29.1.

LLBWS roundup: Venezuela one-hits Canada to improve to 2-0

0

Two pitchers from the Latin America team from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, combined to throw a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over the Canadian team out of Vancouver at the Little League World Series on Friday in South Williamsport, Pa.

Andres Reyes Querales did the bulk of the work and recorded the win, allowing one hit over five innings of work with seven strikeouts to three walks. Sebastian Lopez replaced him and threw a perfect sixth inning with one strikeout to preserve the victory.

Santiago Martinez had the only extra-base hit of the game, a leadoff double in the bottom of the second inning, and later scored as part of a three-run inning for the Venezuelan team, which improved to 2-0 and will face the 1-0 team from Japan on Monday.

Tyson Grimsrud-Ronse broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, but he never advanced as the next three batters struck out.

Nevada 5, Washington 3

Cache Malan homered and hit a double to lead Las Vegas Summerlin Little League, representing the Mountain Region, to a victory over Bonney Lake-Sumner Little League.

Batting third in the lineup, Malan hit a first-inning double and came around to score as the second run of the inning. He added a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to give Nevada some insurance, extending the lead to 4-1 before Mason Schutte singled another run home.

Washington plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Mason Woods’ sacrifice fly and Finn Harrington’s double, bringing the tying run to the plate before a strikeout by Andrew Madsen ended the game.

Aruba 8, Panama 2

Arnold Gismar Martha retired Panama’s first 13 batters and scored two runs as Aruba, representing the Caribbean region, won its LLWS opener while handing Panama (1-1) its first loss.

Shortstop Diliano Raven went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to highlight Aruba’s eight-hit attack. Josiah Koolman’s second-inning single drove in Jeter Filiciana to open the scoring. The Aruba Center Little League team from Santa Cruz, Aruba, pushed its lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fourth.

Gismar Martha struck out eight of the first 13 batters he faced. Josmar Planes broke up his perfect-game bid with a one-out single to center in the fifth. Planes scored on Emanuel Flores’ double down the left field line to cut the margin to 4-1, but Aruba broke it open with four in the sixth.

Flores gave up four hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings as the starting pitcher for Panama, represented by the Vacamonte Little League of Arraijan.

Connecticut 5, Hawaii 1

Luca Pellegrini’s two-out double capped a five-run, fifth-inning rally as Fairfield (Conn.) National Little League, representing the Metro Region, topped Honolulu Little League, representing the West Region.

Brian Palazzolo’s bases-loaded walk pulled Connecticut into a 1-1 tie in the fifth. A two-run error broke the tie before Pellegrini padded the margin. Reliever Tommy D’Amura got the win after throwing three scoreless innings.

Bronson Fermahin struck out eight in four scoreless innings for Hawaii. He allowed one hit and walked three. Josh Tanaka’s third-inning double drove in Hawaii’s lone run.
