Warning: Salmonella Outbreaks Linked to Italian-Style Meats

0

CDC and partners are investigating two Salmonella outbreaks linked to Italian-style meats. People in both outbreaks report eating salami, prosciutto, and other meats that can be found in antipasto or charcuterie assortments before getting sick. Investigators are working to identify specific contaminated products and determine if the two outbreaks are linked to the same food source. Thirty-six people have been infected

Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections

Twenty-three sick people have been reported from fourteen states (see map). Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 30, 2021, to July 27, 2021 (see timeline).

Sick people range in age from 4 to 91 years, with a median age of forty-four, and 67% are male. Of twenty-one people with information available, nine have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

State and local public health officials interviewed people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. Officials also obtained sick people’s shopper records with their consent. Of the sixteen people with information, 14 (88%) ate Italian-style meats, including salami, prosciutto, coppa, and soppressata, that can often be found in antipasto or charcuterie assortments; several brands were reported. This percentage was significantly higher than the 40% of respondents who reported eating pepperoni or other Italian-style meats in the FoodNet Population Survey–a survey that helps estimate how often people eat various foods linked to diarrheal illness. This comparison suggests that people in this outbreak got sick from eating Italian-style meat

The true number of sick people in the outbreaks is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreaks may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella. In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.

Please report to a doctor if you have any symptoms from eating these meats.

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 °F
  • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
  • Signs of dehydration, such as:
  • Not peeing much
  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Feeling dizzy when standing up

President Biden To Campaign in California For Governor Newsom Before California Recall Vote

0

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that President Joe Biden would campaign for Governor Gavin Newsom who is facing a recall vote on September 14. There have been doubts about the President’s availability to visit California due to impending Afghanistan crisis and hurricanes on the East coast. However, Psaki said that it was certainly the plan of the President but she didn’t have “a date in this point of time.”

Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to visit the Bay Area, her former political grounds on Friday after she returns from her overseas trip to Singapore and Vietnam. Senator Elizabeth Warren has been appearing in advertisements warning Californians that “Trump Republicans” were coming to grab power in California. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Independent Bernie Sanders and many others have also lent their support to Newsom.

President Biden had already tweeted his support for Governor Newsom and lauded his efforts to fight the pandemic and more and said that Newsom led California through unprecedented crises. A personal visit could make a difference as the President is popular in California. Recent polls show that there is a narrow gap in points between Newsom’s supporters and detractors.

The recall voters are full of energy in their quest to remove Governor Newsom, whom they call elitist and have a whole list of arguments on why he should be removed. The Golden State has a large number of Democrats. However, there is a general apathy among them on the recall vote. A push by national Democratic leaders may arouse them from their apathy.

There is no single Republican candidate who is endorsed by the GOP though conservative radio host Larry Elder is leading in popularity with a reported 20 percent

Voters who participate in the poll have to answer two questions. The first one is whether Newsom should be recalled and the second one is who should replace him among a list of 46 candidates. If there are enough “No” votes then the second question becomes irrelevant and that’s what the Democrats are hoping for as there is not a single Democratic candidate among the 46 listed. The recall vote will cost California’s tax payers $276 million.

Delta Airlines to raise health premiums by $200 for unvaccinated employees and limit sick pay

0

On Wednesday, Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines said that employees would face a $200 increase per month on their health insurance premiums if they are unvaccinated. The charge will be levied from November 1. The additional charge has been fixed as the company’s costs have risen sharply as it had to cover hospitalization costs due to COVID-19.

The Atlanta based airlines also said that unvaccinated employees who contract the virus will also get a limited number of days as sick leave. As per legislation passed by Congress last year, Delta employees who were sick got up to 14 days of “Covid pay protection” before they could use the standard sick days that were provided by airlines. Delta said that this would end as of September 30, for its employees who are unvaccinated.

The memo seen by CNN said that Covid pay protection would only be provided to fully vaccinated employees who were experiencing a breakthrough infection as this would be compliant with state and local laws.

The company also announced other COVID policies that included additional restrictions that would be imposed on unvaccinated staff. These employees would have to be masked indoors effective immediately. There is a federal mask mandate for air travel for both passengers and staff that will continue at least up to January 18, 2022.

From September 12, unvaccinated employees at Delta will have to take weekly tests for COVID-19. Those who test positive will have to isolate themselves and not return to the workplace.

On Wednesday, Ed Bastian told CNN that COVID-19 especially the delta variant, which incidentally has nothing to do with the airline, has costed them both lives and financial resources. He added that a company had to make its own decisions on mandates according to its own unique “culture,” “values” and “people.”

He thought that the additional voluntary steps, which were not as if there was a mandate, would help Delta Airlines “as close to 100 percent” as they could.

One of Delta’s rivals United has mandated vaccines. CEO Scott Kirby told CNN that a year from now, even if there would be some unhappy employees, there would also be others who were alive, who otherwise wouldn’t have been alive, because of the airlines’ vaccine mandate.

Star John Ritter to Be Honored by Jimmy Kimmel, Suzanne Somers for Aug. 25 TV Special

John Ritter, a Golden Globe and Emmy  award winning actor and comedian died a sudden death in 2013.

Doctors ruled his death was unavoidable. Amy Yasbeck, his widow did not believe that her husband could not be saved by doctors.  At the time John was being treated at Saint John’s Hospital in Los Angeles. She ended up suing the two doctors and received more than $14 million in settlements. As reported by court records also included was a $9.4 million settlement from Saint John’s Hospital where he passed away in Burbank, CA.

Attorneys for the  two doctors said that they did everything they could to save his life but we’re not successful.   Doctors eventually found out that he was suffering from an aortic dissection, a tear in the largest blood vessel in the body.

John was on the set   filming   “8 Simple Rules” and began feeling nauseous and fainted around 7:15. Dr. Lee  said he was showing abnormal tests that seemed to show he was having a heart attack. John was treated with medication that is normally given for people that are showing signs of a heart attack. The drug that he was prescribed was s known to exasperate symptoms of aortic dissection.

Doctor Lee immediately performed an emergency cardiac catheterization. And at that point an aortic dissection was found, and he realized he made an error on the diagnosis, but it was too late.  Once John was formally pronounced dead, there was no autopsy performed. Doctor Lee’s lawyer said,  “I’m comfortable that a reasonable juror would understand that Dr. Lee was between a rock and a hard spot and had to make a judgment call.”

State regulators further did an investigation and found that the hospital was negligent. Chest X rays were not performed.  In 2001, his wife filed the lawsuit against Dr. Lotysch who did a full body scan at Health Scan America to see if there were any heart abnormalities. It was reported by the Doctor he was in perfectly good health.

Amy said that none of the doctors or the hospital  never condoled her and   never made an  any admission  of guilt or made an apology to her and her family. Amy was seeking $67 million in damages as compensation for the “malpractice” suit for his life and value of his filming 8 Simple Rules.

Unfortunately, at  the trial in March of 2008, the jury cleared both doctors of  any negligence, and Amy and John’s family lost by 3 to 9 vote.

Ironically, Celebrity actor John Ritter of Threes Company legendary TV show  star passed away on his daughter Stella’s fifth birthday on September 11th, 2003.

The company is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter earnings results on Thursday after the market closes. The company has seen its share price fall by approximately 29 percent to date, this year. It has a market cap of $31.8 billion.

0

California judge U.S. District Judge James V. Selna declared a mistrial Tuesday in the embezzlement trial of attorney Michael Avenatti. Avenatti was charged with stealing millions in settlement money from his clients. The judge ruled that federal prosecutors failed to turn over relevant financial evidence to Avenatti, resulting in a mistrial.

Avenatti was sentenced in July to 2 1/2 years in prison in a $25 million extortion case in New York.

Avenatti was accused by Federal prosecutors of extorting five clients he worked with of $10 million for funneling settlements that were negotiated   and lying about the funds negotiated. He funneled payments to account he was in control of.

Crimes of Avenatti include the following:

Sentenced in July to 2 1/2 years in prison in a $25 million extortion case in New York.

Duterte confirms bid for Vice President in 2022 Philippines election

0

There has been a lot of talk about the future plans of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte as his six-year term will end next year and he cannot stand for office again, as per the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Earlier on Tuesday, his party PDP Laban Party said that he had accepted their endorsement to run for Vice President and later on Tuesday the President himself confirmed that he would run for the post.

In comments broadcast on Wednesday, Duterte said that he would run for the post of Vice President to “continue the crusade.” He said that he was worried about the drugs insurgency, followed by criminality and drugs.

However, there is still some confusion about who will run for President alongside him. PDP Laban party mentioned that Senator Christopher “Bong”Go would run alongside him as President. They have worked together since the late nineties.

Many experts have touted that he could run alongside with his daughter Sara Duterte. However, on Wednesday she added to the confusion by posting on Facebook that her father had told her that he would be running with Senator “Bong” Go and asked them to publicly announce the decision.

According to AP, in June, the International Criminal Court’s   (ICC)’s outgoing chief prosecutor Heydarian had said that the court had reason to believe that crimes against humanity had been commented during the drug   crackdown by the administration and Duterte who positions himself as a tough anti-drug advocate. He would look to remain in power or have his close allies in power in order to deflect a possible prosecution by the ICC.

President Rodrigo Duterte is still a popular president in the island nation. However, he had faced public ire after the outbreak of the delta variant in Philippines. Official data puts the number of COVID-19 cases at 1.86 million and deaths at almost 32,000. About 20 percent of the cases have been detected in the past six weeks. This might dent his popularity.
