Supreme Court upholds Trump administration ‘remain in Mexico’ policy in blow to Biden administration

0

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the Biden Administration to reinstate the Migrant Protection Protocols policy which is often referred to as the ‘remain in Mexico’ policy. This policy was enforced by the Trump administration in 2019. It decreed that thousands of asylum seekers had to stay across the border in Mexico in rough conditions and could cross over only when it was time for their immigration case hearings.

At least five of six conservative’s justices ruled in favor of restarting the program. The three Trump appointees were among those who voted to reinstate the programs. Judges are not required to publicly disclose how they vote in emergency appeals.

The policy caused a lot of hardship to potential immigrants who live across the border in difficult conditions with security concerns as there is rampant crime and violence in the border towns of Mexico. So, the Biden administration had halted the program on the first day after coming to power. However, Texas and Missouri Attorney Generals sued over the suspension of the program.

In its lawsuit, Texas claimed that suspension of the ‘remain in Mexico’ program made it difficult for local governments to provide services to immigrants who had permission to stay in the U.S., while their cases were yet to be heard. The Lone Star State’s Attorney General Ken Paxton welcomed the order by the Supreme Court and posted that the policy “must be implemented now!” on Twitter.

When the pandemic began, the implementation of the program was halted by the Trump administration as a public health order prevented almost anyone from crossing over. It is still in place. However, as the situation is easing, border states especially Texas has been looking to reinstate the policy as the Department of Homeland Security had ended it in June.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement that would comply with the order in good faith. It also said that it was committed to building a “safe, orderly and humane system” that would uphold the nation’s laws and values.

Immigration lawyers and experts have asked the Biden administration and the DHS to appeal the decision made by the Supreme Court.

Spike Lee includes conspiracy group that alleged government involvement in new 9/11 documentary

Filmmaker Spike Lee has released a new eight-hour documentary series called “New York Epicenters: 9/11-20211/2. The first among four installments debuted on Sunday on HBO. The first two installments have focused on the pandemic and the last two go back to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11.

The New York Times interviewed Spike Lee through a video call. Reporter Reggie Ugwu spoke to the iconic filmmaker on several topics and the reason why he still had questions about the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings.

According to the Times, Lee said that as a New Yorker and with twenty years almost over since 9/11 as well as New York being called the “epicenter” of the pandemic, it was natural for him to combine the two events to make a documentary.

Spike Lee also said that he still had questions about how and why the Twin Towers fell. He said that he hoped that Congress held a congressional hearing about 9/11. He said that he had put the information in the movie, and he would let people decide for themselves as he respected the intelligence of the audience.

When asked why he didn’t say the same for other issues including whether the vaccine was poison or whether Joe Biden was legitimately elected he said people were going to think what they think. He pointed out how people had called him

  • racist after he released “Do the Right Thing”
  • antisemitic after “Mo Better Blues
  • misogynistic after “She’s Gotta Have It.”

He also noted that he was “still here” after about 40 years of film making. Spike Lee interviewed many known and unknown faces to make the documentary. Some of them included

  • Senator Chuck Schumer
  • Mayor Bill de Blasio
  • Rosie Perez
  • health care workers
  • firefighters
  • activists
  • survivors
  • conspiracy group –Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth.

The New York Police Department refused to participate. Spike Lee interviewed over 200 people including politicians, actors, health care workers, activists and survivors and acted as a conductor to bring forth a piece of documented history that is both compelling and questioning.

Starbucks adds new apple crisp macchiato to pumpkin spice latte on fall menu

0

Get ready for a new beverage experience as the leaves turn golden, brown and red. Starbucks is releasing is its autumn lineup, on Tuesday. It has a new addition in its seasonal lineup – the apple crisp macchiato which will join pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin cream cold brew that are already a part of the menu.

This year, the coffee chain has added an expresso drink to its cafes on Tuesday across the U.S. and Canada. Although the macchiato has been on its menu for more than forty years the apple crisp macchiato is a new version of the old much-loved beverage. It is made with apple and brown sugar flavors. It had a caramelized apple drizzle topping that is made using apple puree. It is served both hot and cold.

As per market research from Dataessential, Americans love apples. This favorite fruit appears as apple or as apple flavor in 58 percent of U.S. menus. When the research team at Starbucks was looking for new flavors beyond the quintessential pumpkin fall flavor, they zoomed in on spicy baked apple and thereby created the new apple crisp macchiato.

Dataessential trendologist Mike Kostyo told CNBC that fruit flavors lend themselves to both hot and cold beverages which is important when Starbucks and other coffee chains launch their fall menus.

The trend towards the consumption of cold beverages is changing and Starbucks customers have been   consuming more cold drinks throughout the year.

When Starbucks released its fiscal third quarter results, it reported that 74 percent of its total drink sales in the U.S. were attributed to cold beverages. The company has seen an over 7 percent rise in sales this year and its market value stands at $136 billion.

Last year, the pumpkin cream cold brew outsold the pumpkin spice latte. Cold beverages are becoming more popular throughout the year and a new seasonal beverage such as apple crisp macchiato, which can be consumed as either a hot or an iced beverage may follow the same trend. It remains to be seen whether Americans adopt the hot apple crisp macchiato in large numbers or continue recent trends by ordering more of its iced equivalent.

Qatar Air Base described as hot ‘living hell’ in leaked memo from US Central Command

0

A memo sent last Friday, by a Special Agent to Pentagon and the State Department has been leaked to the press. The memo details the difficult conditions under which Afghan refugees are being housed at the Qatar Air Base. Evacuation flights have been temporarily suspended on Friday as the base is overcrowded.

According to Axios, who obtained the memo, supervisory special agent Colin Sullivan described the situation at the Qatar Air Base as a “life threatening humanitarian disaster.” He also noted that he was not downplaying the conditions in Kabul nor the conditions that the Afghanis had escaped from but said that the current conditions in Doha were “of our own doing.”

Colin Sullivan is a liaison to the U.S. Central Command. When contacted by Axios, he referred all questions about the email to a Defense Department spokesperson.

The Pentagon told Axios that it had taken necessary steps to improve the ground conditions by adding more than 100 toilets. It said that they were also providing 7,000 traditional Afghan meals, thrice a day.

A State Department spokesperson said that they were working expeditiously to remove bottlenecks, were increasing consular personnel in Qatar and were working to “alleviate current conditions.”

A U.S. official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said that the U.S. Central Command was doing all that they could considering the appalling conditions and “inadequate forethought and contingency planning.”

The Al Udeid base is a major military base in Qatar. It is situated in the middle of the desert, so it is extremely hot with temperatures at 103 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday and an expected 107 Fahrenheit on Wednesday. Along with Kuwait, it is one of the closest airbases that the U.S. can use to evacuate Afghans and Americans who need to leave Afghanistan at the earliest. It is not equipped to handle such large number of evacuees as it has a capacity of handling approximately 10,000 people.

The Daily Mail reported that about 21,600 people were evacuated from Kabul within 24 hours as of 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to the White House. Fifty-seven coalition flights and 37 U.S. military flights were also used in the evacuation process. About 58,700 people have been evacuated since August 14.

Tesla’s self-driving software ‘not great’ CEO Musk notes but ‘rallying to improve’

On Monday, Elon Musk admitted that version 9.2 of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta was “not great.” He also said that the Autopilot/AI team was working hard to improve it as quickly as possible. He said that the company was looking at a single stack that would work in both highways and city streets. However, it would require a huge neural network (NN) retraining.

The tweet from entrepreneur Musk comes after U.S. safety regulators are investigating several Tesla crashes that could have occurred when the electric vehicle was on autopilot. In the U.S. Tesla sells the FSD package at $10,000 or at $199 per month. This package has been   marketed as an upgrade to Autopilot, which is a slew of advanced driver-assistance system features.

The FSD Beta features are said to be available to only those who had previously bought FSD and to Tesla employees. The feature reportedly can perform the following functions without a driver behind the wheel:

  • automatically change lanes
  • navigate on a highway
  • drive into a parking spot.

The electric vehicle giant also said that the FSD Beta version should be able to automatically steer on city streets, later this year. Another possible feature touted by Musk mentions that it would also have the ability to reason why a lead vehicle was slow, if there was a hold up in traffic.

Tesla as well as other manufacturers always mention that drivers who used the self-drive systems should be ready to travel intervene at all times. However, if this intervention had been followed, perhaps there might not have been so many accidents involving Tesla when this feature has been used. U.S. safety regulators have opened 11 investigations into accidents where the system reportedly missed spotting parked emergency vehicles. The accidents accounted for one life lost and left at least 17 people with injuries.

According to CNBC the driver assistance system did not make Tesla electric vehicles safe to use, if there wasn’t an attentive driver behind the wheel.
