More than half the gorillas at Atlanta Zoo test “presumptive” positive for COVID-19

0

On Friday, a zoo in Atlanta, Georgia announced that a few of its western lowland gorillas had shown “presumptive positive test results” for COVID-19. The primates had exhibited some of the symptoms of the infection. These signs included mild coughing, runny noses and also a small loss of appetite. So, they were tested. The gorillas are being closely monitored and officials hope that they will recover soon.

A statement from Zoo Atlanta said that they sent samples of fecal matter and nasal and oral swabs to the University of Georgia’s Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which gave a presumptive positive result. They have also sent samples to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa. They are awaiting confirmation from the lab in Ames, Iowa.

Although the zoo follows strict COVID protocols such as personal protective equipment (PPE), Tyvek suits, N95 masks and increased ventilation, the gorillas were affected by the virus. They might have been infected by a care worker who was asymptomatic but later tested positive. The worker was fully vaccinated and had worn PPE when she came to work.

Zoo Atlanta said that samples will be taken from all 20 of their gorillas, who are divided into four groups, to undergo regular testing. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that 13 of the gorillas were being treated, as of now, although Zoo Atlanta did not mention the number of gorillas that were infected with COVID-19.

In a statement Zoo Atlanta also said that it was treating gorillas who were at risk of developing complications from SARS-CoV-2 with monoclonal antibodies. The zoo also said that they would give the gorillas the Zoetis vaccine, which is specifically developed for animals, after they recover.

In its website, the Zoo also mentioned that it had been waiting the Zoetis vaccine, which has been developed for animals and has gained approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The doses have arrived at the zoo, since. The zoo stated that the staff will administer the vaccine to

Boies Schiller loses attorneys as law firm defends Harvey Weinstein, Elizabeth Holmes and condones founder’s kids’ behavior

0

Boies Schiller Flexner, a legal powerhouse with offices across the world, has seen about a hundred lawyers leave the firm in the past year. Several issues have contributed to the exodus and have been blamed on decisions made by the founders. The prominent American law firm, whose original partners have helmed cases for major corporations and politicians, are now facing a talent crunch as attorneys are leaving in hordes.

Founder David Boies is well known for his representation of the U.S. government in 2001 in the landmark antitrust case against software and hardware giant Microsoft and for helping to gain a victory that overturned California’s ban on gay marriage.

Founder Jonathan Schiller is renowned for representing corporations and sports teams and other huge entities across the nation. Some of his major clients include Goldman Sachs and the New York Yankees.

Although it was once a prestigious U.S. firm with lawyers vying to join in, Boies Schiller Flexner is now losing its sheen as lawyers are leaving the firm including talent at the second and third tier as they are dissatisfied with the decisions made by the founders. These decisions include the following:

  • Boies has agreed to work with disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein as well as Elizabeth Holmes who is facing fraud charges.
  • The use of racist language and the “n” word at a party by Josh Schiller that was thrown by another of the firm’s lawyers and no action was taken against him upset many lawyers.
  • Nepotism as Aaron Schiller, boss of architecture company Schiller Projects, got special treatment and a contract to design the Hudson Yards headquarters in NYC. The open plan design made it difficult for attorneys to have confidential briefings with their clients.

A former Boies Schiller partner told CNBC that the prestigious firm kept naming new people as managing partners, but they kept leaving as it was just a name and there was no transition and David, and Jon were “deciding everything.”

CNBC also spoke to Matt Schwartz, a co-managing partner, who said that four new managing partners – Natasha, Sigrid, Alan, and he “run the day-to-day operations.” They do so “under the guidance and oversight of the executive committee” which consists of founders David Boies and Jonathan Schiller.

Permitless carry is legal, Texans can openly carry guns in public without training

0

On Wednesday, a new pro-gun law in Texas was approved. It lets most Texans openly carry a gun without a permit or training. People above the age of 21, who do not have felony, assault, terrorist threats or domestic abuse cases, are legally allowed to carry a firearm. It was passed by the House of Representatives 82-62 and Governor Greg Abbott has signed the bill.

Earlier, residents required a license, had to complete training, and pass a written exam and proficiency test. Now, with the new law, police chiefs are worried that their jobs will become tougher than before. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said that it would be difficult to know who was “a good guy with a gun” and who was “a bad guy with a gun.”

Andrew Karwoski, a policy expert at Everytown for Gun Safety said that if an individual carried a firearm at a protest or a store, law enforcement could not do much unless the person acted in an illegal manner.

According to Everytown civilians can open carry loaded long guns in 29 state capitals. Several other states, with a majority of conservative lawmakers, have introduced similar legislation. They include

  • Iowa
  • Montana
  • Tennessee
  • Utah

Texas has a long history with guns and the right to carry guns in public. In 1995, concealed carry was signed by the then Governor George W. Bush that allowed Texans to carry a gun in public.

In 2007, the Texas Motorist Protection Act allowed people without a handgun license to keep a gun in their vehicles.

In 2015, the legislature in the Lone Star State allowed guns in university campuses. Open carry was also permitted though a license was required to carry a gun outside a home or a vehicle.

Now in September 2021, after the passing of Senate Bill 1927, open carry without a permit or training is allowed in public, throughout the state of Texas, despite misgivings from law enforcement, firearm instructors and gun advocacy groups.

On Friday morning, a judge in Maryland, reportedly shot himself and died just before federal officials reached his home. The officers arrived at his home in Henderson, which is 70 miles east of Baltimore, to arrest him on alleged child sexual abuse charges that included filming teenagers while they were showering n his hunting and fishing cabin.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan had appointed Jonathan Newell, a Republican, as a judge to the only circuit court in Caroline County in 2016. He held on to the post in 2018.   He was serving a 15-year term before he committed suicide.

The 50-year-old judge was on leave since July. A young boy had found a hidden camera in the judge’s fishing cabin and had informed his parents about it. Officials launched an investigation, and several digital devices were seized with footage of child sex abuse. The judge reportedly swallowed a device.

Disturbing footage dating from September 2014 showed “n” number of teenage boys showering and some also showed him touching the naked body a young man. He reportedly told them that he was checking for ticks.

The Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office said that FBI agents had found Newell “suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.” He was pronounced dead at 6.43 a.m. The officials had arrived at his door on Friday morning, to arrest him as there was a federal criminal complaint against him.

Friday afternoon, in a press release, prosecutors said that the Maryland State Police would lead the investigation into the apparent suicide. Earlier, the Baltimore Sun had reported that Newell was on leave from his work at the courts after his home was raided on July 24. The leave had been extended to September.

Kimberly Madison Keith, who is a neighbor, posted photos of the scene at 6.10 a.m. She narrated the incidents that occurred including a flash bang and shots and said that she heard through grapevine “a bullet to the head.” She posted that she was relieved that his family were not at home, but Newell’s dogs were out in the yard.

Biden addresses commemoration of September 11 attacks anniversary with calls of national unity

0

In a recorded address to the nation, President Joe Biden requested Americans to “never break” unity and it was “what makes us who we are: America at its best.” He also spoke of a personal incident with a childhood friend of his Davis, who lost a son on 9/11 and who had told Biden to tell people “Don’t be afraid” when he was getting ready to address students at the University of Delaware about the new world they were living in.

He said, “To the families of the 2,977 people from more than 90 nations, killed on Sept. 11,2001,…and 1,000 more who were injured, America and the world commemorate you and your loved ones, the pieces of your soul.”

He also said that they honored all the people who gave their all to rescue, recover and rebuild after the horrific incident. Some of those whom he mentioned included

  • firefighters
  • police officers
  • EMTs
  • construction workers
  • doctors
  • nurses
  • faith leaders
  • service members
  • veterans
  • everyday people.

Biden also recollected the “true sense of national unity” that was present in America, in the days following 9/11. He also acknowledged that darker forces of human nature that included fear and anger, resentment and violence were released against Muslim Americans who were true and faithful followers of a peaceful religion.

He continued on the theme of unity saying that although it has bent, it should not break. He said that unity did not mean that everyone believed the same thing. Instead, he said that it required Americans to have “a fundamental respect and faith in each other.”

He also said that the central lesson of September 11 for him was that at their most vulnerable during the push and pull of human nature and the battle for the soul of America – “unity” remained the “nation’s greatest strength.”

The 9/11 terror attack was masterminded by the Al Qaeda and its leader fled to Afghanistan. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan following the attack. Osama bin Laden was finally killed by American Navy Seals on May 2, 2011.

Olivia Rodrigo reportedly gives millions of dollars and song credits to Taylor Swift and Hayley Williams

Olivia Rodrigo became a teen sensation with her debut single “Drivers License.” Since the release of her album Sour, when she dropped songs “Good 4 U” and “Deja Vu” fans and others pointed out similarities with other popular songs. So, the singing sensation has shared royalties and writing credit retroactively with Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro and Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent (Annie Clark).

According to Wednesday’s report on Billboard, Paramore’s Williams and Farro will get half of the royalties of “Gone 4 U” as the song is very similar to Paramore’s hit “Misery Business.” The other half will be for Rodrigo and her collaborator Daniel Nigro. The song was a super hit and hit the No.1 spot in the Hot 100. Then it stayed at No. 2 for almost three months. The duo could receive almost $1.2 million.

Billboard also reported that Taylor Swift, Jack Antanoff and Annie Clark will get 50 percent of Deja Vu’s earnings as it is similar to Taylor’s “Cruel Summer” from the 2019 album “Lover” while Rodrigo and Nigro will share the remaining 50 percent. The report estimates that Swift could earn $325,678 while Antonoff could rake in $260,542 and Clark could get $65,135.

Taylor Swift and Jack Antanoff will get two third of the royalties, one third each for “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Backwards” for an interpolation from “New Year’s Day” which Swift dropped in 2017 and Rodrigo with take the last third for writing the song. Each of the three artists could have already earned $86,000.

Buzzfeed News contacted Rodrigo’s reps for comment and clarification of numbers but has not received a response, as yet.

When Elvis Costello was told that Rodrigo had copied a guitar riff from one of his songs for her album-opener Brutal, he tweeted that it was fine by him. He added that it was how rock and roll worked. He said that an artist took broken pieces of “another thrill” and made a “brand new toy.”

American talk show host Wendy Williams cancels appearances due to ongoing health issues

0

American talk show host Wendy Williams had canceled her recent appearances as she is facing health issues. There is a statement on her Instagram page which says that she would not be promoting activities next week. She said that she will be on air for the premier of the 13th season of The Wendy Williams Show on September 20.

A statement on her official page on Instagram stated that Wendy was dealing with a few ongoing health issues and was undergoing further evaluations. It also noted that that her promotional activities in the following week would not take place. It also said that she couldn’t wait to be back in her purple chair for the premier of season 13 of her show The Wendy Williams Show.

PEOPLE reached out to her representative but did not get a response.

The talk show host took a break from her talk show last May, due to health issues. In May 2020,   a spokesperson told PEOPLE that the 57-year-old host was feeling “fatigue” as a result of symptoms of Graves disease.

In February 2018, Wendy Williams said that she was suffering from Graves disease, an auto immune disorder and the doctor had asked her to take a vacation of three weeks. She told the women in her show that women more than men had to “stop putting everything first because if we’re not good, they’re not good.”

In March, the talk show host told PEOPLE that she had been diagnosed with both Graves disease and hyperthyroidism, 19 years ago. She also said that it was not necessary to have both the diseases together, though she had them.

The star has been facing multiple health problems in the past few years and has had to take breaks on and off. There was a time when Wendy Williams had even thought that her problems could be due to menopause.

After the statement was posted on her official page, many followers of Wendy Williams posted get well messages, sent positive energy and some of them said that they were praying for her.

Angelina Jolie mentions Harvey Weinstein, Fears of her Children’s Safety And Custody Battle with Brad Pitt

0

Angelina Jolie was recently interviewed by The Guardian on her new book Know Your Rights and Claim Them to be published in collaboration with Amnesty International. She spoke about the book, her difficult encounters with Harvey Weinstein and the custody battle with her ex-Brad Pitt.

She spoke of her book and her work with displaced people in

  • Syria
  • Iraq
  • Afghanistan
  • Sierra Leone.

She also said that the last five years had been tough and her divorce with Brad Pitt left her feeling “broken.” She said that she decided to work on the book after her personal experiences but also said that she could not say much about it as there were legal issues.

She said that she had not made the decision lightly and it took a lot for her to separate from the father of her children. She also mentioned that she could not comment on the domestic abuse. When asked if she had felt fear about the safety of her children, she responded “Yes.” However, she also said that she wanted the entire family including their dad, Brad Pitt “to heal” and to “be peaceful” as they would always be a family.

Earlier, she had mentioned the sexual harassment she faced when she worked with the now   disgraced but one-time powerful Harvey Weinstein, in a New York Times report published in October.   She had alleged that Weinstein had made “unwanted advances” in a hotel room, and she had rejected them during the release of Playing by Heart in the late nineties.

In the new interview with the Guardian, she opened up with more details stating that the disgraced Hollywood producer’s advances were much more than a “pass” and she had to physically escape from him. She said that both of her former husbands: Jonny Lee Miller and Brad Pitt knew about the incident. She said that Jonny was “great” about it and spread the word.

She said that she refused to work in The Aviator because Harvey Weinstein was involved in the project and she “never associated or worked with him again.” However, Brad Pitt worked with Weinstein, and it was hard on her. She said that they fought about it and “it hurt.”

Agencies have reached out to Brad Pitt’s representatives but have not received a response, as yet.

Judge rules Epic Game Couldn’t Prove Apple’s a Monopolist, Orders Apple To Include External Links In App Store

0

On Friday, a federal judge in California ruled that Epic Games was unable to prove that Cupertino tech giant Apple was a monopolist. However, she left the ruling open so that others might help prove it in future. Epic Games, however, won on another issue, of anticompetitive conduct and Apple is required to make the necessary changes in its business model.

In her judgement, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers wrote that although the court noted that Apple had a considerable market share of more than 55 percent and had extraordinarily high margins of profit, these factors were insufficient to show antitrust conduct as “success” was “not illegal.”

She also said that the final trial record failed to include evidence of other critical factors including “barriers to entry and conduct decreasing output or decreasing innovation in the relevant market.” She said that the Court did not find it impossible but only noted that Epic Games was unable to show that “Apple is an illegal monopolist.”

With her ruling, the judge has left open possibilities for appeal or for other lawsuits to take it forward. The Department of Justice has brought a similar suit against Google on its App Store practices. POLITICO had reported that the Department of Justice had been waiting for the judgement on Epic Games’ suit before proceeding against big tech.

Judge Rogers said that Apple exhibited anticompetitive conduct by not allowing developers to inform customers directly about their own payment mechanisms that they could use instead of payment through Apple. She ordered the tech company to let developers include external links to their own tools as well as to the purchasing mechanism available in the App Store.

This part of the ruling is a partial victory for Epic Games and other developers as it will force Apple to change its business model. This ruling will help Epic Games as well as other developers who offer their apps in Apple’s App Store to offer their own payment processing services and Apple’s App Store will no longer be the only way for customers to purchase apps.

Apple has been slowly adjusting policies that have the potential of becoming lawsuits in future. These new policies will make it difficult for regulators or rivals relying on their services to pursue legal action in future.
