FBI releases declassified documents with Saudi link to 9/11 after President Biden’s order

FBI releases declassified documents with Saudi link to 9/11 after President Biden’s order

On Saturday, the FBI declassified a document related to the 9/11 attacks hours after President Joe Biden and former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush and others honored the heroes and victims on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Last week, President Biden had ordered the FBI to declassify documents pertaining to the 9/11 investigation. The 16-page document, declassified on Saturday, is the first file to be shared and more files are expected to be shared over the next six months.

The document has been redacted a lot and provides information of a 2015 interview with a man who was in contact with Saudi nationals in the U.S. These nationals – Omar al-Bayoumi and Fahad al-Thumairy had helped two hijackers: Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar who were the first two hijackers who had arrived in the nation.

The document shows that the hijackers and the Saudi associates were in contact on U.S. soil. However, it does not provide proof that senior Saudi government officials were in compliance with the attacks.

However, the lawyer for 9/11 victims relatives said that the findings and conclusions of the FBI investigation validated the arguments that they had made in the litigation that the Saudi government was responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

He also said that Saudi officials exchanging phone calls among themselves and Al Qaida operatives, accidentally meeting the hijackers, providing them assistance to settle down in the U.S. and to find flight schools provided a blueprint of how the Al Qaeda terror network operated in the nation and had the “active support of the Saudi government.”

However, the Saudi government continues to deny its role and has not responded when asked for comment by several news outlets.

On Thursday, the Saudi Embassy in Washington released a statement which said that they welcomed the declassification of documents and said that suggestions of their complicity was “categorically false.”

According to CNN, on Sunday, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan reaffirmed that they were in favor of declassifying documents and the documents would show that there was no involvement of their country.

Dan Gallagher chief legal officer of Robinhood says SEC would not ban payment for order flow

0

On Monday, Dan Gallagher, the chief legal officer of Robinhood spoke to CNBC’s Squawk Box. He said that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would not ban payment for order flow. He defended the practice and said that it is ultimately a benefit for retail investors although brokerage firms receive back-end payments for directing the trades of clients to market makers.

Gallagher, who was the SEC commissioner from 2011 to 2015 thinks that the SEC will conclude that payment for order flow is an “amazingly good thing” for retail investors. So, they will not ban it.

Earlier last month, Barrons reported that Gary Gensler, who is the chair of the SEC, said that payment of order interest had “an inherent conflict of interest.” He had also mentioned that banning the practice was not off the table.

Gallagher admitted that banning payment for order flow was on the table and that the SEC would take a deep look at the issue and that it would be an “arduous” process. He also mentioned that the payment of order flow was the lifeblood of Robinhood. It helped the company offer zero commission and no brokerage, thereby bringing in a new generation of retail investors.

He said that this current market structure worked well for retail investors, who were not stupid. He felt that it was insulting to think that they needed protection from the government and the nanny state to save them from making bad decisions.

The entire issue of pay for order flow, which is generally considered to be a controversial practice, came into focus during the January 2021 short squeeze of GameStop stock. Robinhood was forced to limit trading on certain securities, its CEO appeared before the House Committee in February and lawmakers criticized the payment for order flow process for its conflict of interest.

However, the chief law officer told the CNBC news and talk program hosts on Squawk Box that if he was still working for the SEC, he would look into the people and institutions whom he claims lied about the GameStop short squeeze instead of payments for order flow.

House Democrats Set To Raise Corporate and Individual taxes of wealthy Americans

0

Senior House Democrats have drafted a proposal that might be able to get approximately $2.9 trillion to pay for Biden proposed $3.5 trillion package. Although the draft will not follow all the ambitious goals set by President Biden to overturn the 2017 Republican tax law, there has been a lot of work put in by the Democrats to address the concerns set forth by Senator Joe Manchin and other moderates.

The tax proposal was first obtained by the Washington Post. Sources who briefed news outlets said that the proposals are in flux, and they could not confirm whether the draft will be followed through as a whole but mentioned certain reforms in the tax code that would most likely occur, provided all the Democrats in the Senate were on board with the proposal.

The corporate tax is set to increase from 21 percent to 26.5 percent for businesses that have an annual income of over $5 million. Biden had proposed a raise to 28 percent. Business that earn less than $400,000 will pay a lower tax of 18 percent while other businesses will continue to pay 21 percent.

Wealthy Americans who earn over $435,000 could see their tax rate increasing from 37 percent to 39.5 percent.

A five percent increase in capital gains tax has been proposed from the current rate of 20 percent to a new rate of 25 percent. This is a surprise as President Biden had proposed a doubling of capital gains tax.

Taxes on multinationals who shift their base to tax havens might have to pay taxes no matter where they shift their major base to as there is a global push to set minimum tax rates globally.

The draft also looks at increasing the so-called sin taxes. The taxes on tobacco and nicotine will be increased. There will also be a new stream of taxes as cryptocurrency transactions will also be taxed.

All these proposals are currently being discussed and there could be changes according to the sources who provided information as this is only a draft proposal and there could be changes as every Democratic vote in the Senate counts. The Democrats are expecting to finally pass the package on their own, most probably without a single vote from GOP senators. So, they need all their members in the House and especially in the Senate to along with their tax proposals.

Uber drivers in Amsterdam will be classified as employees

0

Uber drivers in Amsterdam will be classified as employees and not contractors the Dutch court ruled today. In the UK earlier in the year the court gave more then it’s 70,000 Uber drivers the ability to earn minimum wage, a vacation plan that was paid for as well as a pension plan.

The Amsterdam court ruled that Uber will be required to extend the same or similar benefits to Uber drivers. The court ruled that they will be considered employees just as taxi drivers are in the country.

Uber must classify its drivers in Amsterdam as employees rather than contractors, a Dutch court ruled Monday, in a blow to the ride-hailing company’s gig-economy business model.

The news follows a similar decision earlier this year in the UK, in which the nation’s supreme court gave more than 70,000 Uber drivers access to a minimum wage, pension plan and paid vacation, among other benefits.

Uber will have to pay a $59,000 fine and potentially reward drivers with back pay in the Netherlands.

Uber said it will appeal the ruling and that it does not intend to employ more drivers in the Netherlands.

“We are disappointed with this decision because we know that the overwhelming majority of drivers wish to remain independent,” said Maurits Schönfeld, Uber’s general manager for northern Europe. “Drivers don’t want to give up their freedom to choose if, when and where to work.”

A spokesperson for the Federation of Dutch Trade Unions praised the decision stated, “Due to the judge’s ruling, the Uber drivers are now automatically employed by Uber,” said Zakaria Boufangacha, FNV’s deputy chairman. “As a result, they will receive more wages and more rights in the event of dismissal or illness.”

Fifty Cent faces backlash after promoting his cognac brand in tweet about 9/11 20th Anniversary

On Saturday, millions of people in the nation and in the world were posting grief, remembrances and more on social media as it was the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks which left almost 3000 dead and thousands injured. However, one rapper, 50 Cent saw an outpouring of anger and disdain against his tweet on 9/11 as he added promotional hashtags of his cognac and wine brand which netizens found tacky and crude.

50 Cent posted a black and white photo of the second hijacked plane going towards the south tower of the World Trade Center. He said, “This day will be forever remembered, to those who lost loved ones my condolences.” He added hashtags #bransoncognac #lecheminduroi.

His blatant advertisement, on both Twitter and Instagram, in the wake of the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks, made several Twitter users very angry. They not only considered his post to be tacky but also rude. Commenters on Twitter ripped into him and called him out for his bad taste.

One person said that every time he saw that second plane hit, he would remember to have a cognac with champagne.

Another one said that his thoughts and prayers were with the little bottles of cognac and champagne that were aboard #AA11 and #AA 77 as well as #UA175 and #UA93 on 9/11 and also added #BransonCognac to the post.

One called it the “wildest thing” the user had “seen so far in my life” while the other said that it was “the most American tweet I’ve seen.”

This is not the first time 50 Cent used a tragedy to promote his brands. When Michael K. Williams, who starred in “The Wire,” recently overdosed, the rapper had also promoted his brands. The 46-year-old rapper posted emojis of wide-open eyes, a screenshot of the exclusive report of Williams death in Brooklyn by the New York Post and promoted the Starz tv show “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” which based on his childhood in Queens, NYC.

He had also written “R.I.P. micheal k williams” He not only misspelled “The Wire” star’s name but also added hashtags promoting his wine and cognac liquor brands. He was called out by many following which he deleted the posts.

Over 200 CEOs support Biden’s mandate to vaccinate or undergo weekly tests

Business Roundtable, a large lobbyist group with over 200 CEOs representing companies from every sector of the American economy, including those from Fortune 500 companies, released a statement on Thursday, welcoming President Biden’s plan that requires companies that have more than a 100 workers to mandate vaccines or weekly tests. The delta variant is   still surging across the country and has a much more disastrous effect on the unvaccinated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the delta variant accounts for more than 90 percent of COVID-19 cases in the U.S.

Joshua Bolten, the group’s president said that Business Roundtable welcomed the Biden administration’s continued vigilance in dealing with COVID-19. He said business leaders in America were aware of how important it was to vaccinate and test for the infection so that the pandemic could be defeated.

He said that several companies had decided to implement a vaccine mandate for some, or all of their employees and they applauded that decision. He also said that Business Roundtable looked forward to continuing to work with the administration and leaders across all levels of government so that they could jointly defeat the pandemic.

Most of the huge retailers, tech companies and e-commerce companies in America are a part of the Business Roundtable. Some of the major American companies whose CEOs form a part of the lobbyist group are

  • Accenture
  • Amazon
  • Apple
  • BlackRock
  • Bechtel
  • General Motors
  • Google
  • Home Depot
  • Walmart

Although some of the large corporations in the U.S. were hesitant to bring in a vaccine mandate, due to labor shortages, the latest plan proposed by the Biden administration has made it easier on them. Now, workers who remain unvaccinated have to undergo weekly tests.

A few companies had already asked in-person employees to be vaccinated before President Biden unveiled his plan. Some of them include

  • Disney
  • Facebook
  • Google
  • Tyson Foods
  • United Airlines.

As President Biden’s six-pronged COVID-19 action plan, revealed on Thursday, goes into effect, corporate America is also welcoming the proposal so that the nation can “unite” not only on September   11, but always. Whenever there is the requirement such as COVID-19 pandemic or any other incidents that could happen in future maybe as a result of climate change or any other major unknown, unseen upheaval that could come in the future, unity among Americans would strengthen the nation.
