Poland sees mass protests and pro-EU rallies as people fear ‘Polexit’

0

On Sunday, more than 100,000 Poles took to the streets of Warsaw as well as in cities and towns in Poland in support of its membership of the European Union (EU). A recent controversial ruling by the country’s court could jeopardize Poland’s EU membership. The court ruled that important EU laws were “incompatible” with the constitution of the nation. There were protests in approximately 100 towns and cities.

On Thursday, the court declared that EU law did not have primacy over the Polish constitution. This has been the biggest challenge to the supremacy of EU law by a member of the bloc. It created fear among the people of the nation in what has been termed as “Polexit” after the famous or infamous (depending on how you look at it) Brexit.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that the court’s decision was correct. However, he also said that his ruling party had not planned to leave the EU. In a Facebook post he wrote that it was a “harmful myth” that was used by the opposition.

On Monday, Thierry Breton, who is the industry chief of the European Commission, said that he did not believe that Poland would leave the EU after the court’s ruling. He said the Commission would analyze the ruling before taking action.

There has been tension between Poland and the EU after the Poland’s right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) Party came into office in 2015. Brussels and Warsaw have tussled over issues including LGBT rights, judicial independence and more.

One of the four people detained in the Sunday protests was Franek Broda, who is the Prime Minister’s nephew. He said that he was kicked on the head by an officer when he was detained while he was on the ground.

Sylwester Marczak, a spokesman for Warsaw police, confirmed that Broda has been temporarily detained and handcuffs were used. However, he did not speak of the allegations of police brutality. The eighteen-year nephew of the current prime minister has been a government critic as well as an activist for LGBT rights in Poland.

Merck asks FDA for EUA for COVID-19 pill that halves hospitalizations and death

0

On Monday, Merck and partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics LP asked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to give its COVID-19 pill emergency use authorization (EUA). They filed an application for their pill molnupiravir as the next step forward after receiving promising results in trials from a late-stage study. According to the company, its antiviral drug decreased hospitalizations or death due to COVID-19 by 50 percent in high risk individuals who had mild or moderate infections, as per data obtained in phase three clinical trials.

If the FDA authorizes emergency use approval, molnupiravir could become the first oral pill to be used to treat COVID-19. It reportedly stops the virus from replicating itself and this could stop its spread throughout the human body. It was originally formulated to treat influenza. It can be taken at home and would not require patients to go to hospitals to get treated.

Emory University had developed the drug at Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory (DRIVE). The drug innovation company, based in Atlanta, had licensed its use to Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, who in turn partnered with the Summit, New Jersey giant pharmaceutical Merck.

Merck has released the results of the clinical trials. The results have not been peer reviewed. Side effects were mild but were not mentioned by Merck.

According to the Daily Mail, trials were also conducted with generic versions in India but were stopped for moderate cases as the medication did not show “significant efficacy.” However, the pills were successful when used for mild cases. Incidentally different countries classify mild and moderate cases according to their own regulations.

Merck also said that it was working with other regulatory agencies around the world. It has said that the U.S. will be supplied with roughly 1.7 million courses, if the FDA authorizes EUA or full approval. The New York Times reported that a five-day course of molnupiravir would cost approximately $700 per person. Monoclonal antibodies, the current treatment, costs the federal government three times as much as that of molnupiravir.

Attendee at Iowa Trump Rally comments on ‘Civil War’, hashtag goes viral on Twitter

0

On Sunday, a top trending topic was ‘Civil War.’ In case you wondered why an incident that took place centuries ago went viral, it was a result of remarks of an attendee of Trump’s rally in Iowa on Saturday. The attendee told a news outlet that her belief was that the nation was headed towards a “civil war.”

On Saturday, Donald Trump was at the Fairground in Des Moines at a rally, with supporters. A supporter told spoke to MSNBC and remarked on air that she believed that the U.S. was heading towards a civil war.

She criticized both the Democrats and the Republicans. The ardent Trump supporter said his loyalists including Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul and a few more whose names she didn’t mention were “worth their salt” and the rest were “as weak as” they could possibly be “in Congress.”

As expected there were quite a few hilarious memes depicting Trump supporters and his supposed army. There were more than 76,000 tweets by Sunday afternoon. Many posts openly made fun of his supporters. They also poked fun as they compared them to “soldiers.”

There were other opinions on her comments as many people replied to her sentiments with some people seriously commenting on it. These tweets focused on the national divide in the nation which seems to be increasing from 2016 onwards.

Media persons posted their opinions. One spoke of the possibility of violence by some supporters which was not been taken seriously. It should be remembered that the Make America Great Again (MAGA) protesters had stormed the Capitol on January 6, just over nine months ago and took the nation by surprise while another said if there was a Civil War the Blue States would not fight this time around if the Red states wanted to leave and would give them a “check out time.

The Brookings Institute reported in September that a civil war is unlikely. However, many Americans think that such a conflict could take place in future. About 46 percent said that an actual war was possible and 43 percent said that it was unlikely.

Apple appeals against Epic Games case ruling, could delay changes in App Store for years

0

Although Apple had called the September ruling in a case filed by Epic Games a “resounding victory” as it had won nine out of the ten claims put forward by the gaming company, it has filed an appeal for the tenth claim that it lost. There is a lot of revenue at stake for the tech giant so it has appealed for a stay so that it can avoid making the necessary changes by December, as it is required to do so.

Epic Games, who had been removed by the App Store for violating its app-store policies, had filed an antitrust case against Apple. It had lost nine claims but won an important one. Judge Gonzalez Rogers said that the company had violated California’s anti-steering rules.

Judge Rogers ordered Apple to make changes in its App Store to let mobile apps developers direct their customers to use not only the App store but also outside payments methods, if they wished to do so. Generally the App Store charges developers to pay a fee between 15 to 30 percent to use the App Store to make payments.

Allowing outside payment gateways, other than the App Store, could make the tech company lose billions in revenue. It might also have to make technical changes. The App Store has reported $53.8 billion in sales last year, at a gross margin of 66 percent. It accounts for roughly 20 percent of the company’s revenue.

The appeal for a stay has several arguments made by the company including security issues. It also says that the implementation of third party payment would cause harm to the company as well as to consumers.

The appeal could be heard in November and if Apple wins a stay, the injunction, currently scheduled to go into effect on December 9, will be delayed until the time when the appeal is heard and a ruling is made and this could potentially take years.

In September, Epic Games had filed an appeal against the ruling earlier in the month as it had been disappointed with the judge’s ruling. Tim Sweeney, CEO tweeted a humorous post on Apple’s appeal on Twitter on October 9.

Kraft Heinz says food price rise is here to stay, people must be prepared for it

0

Miguel Patricio, the boss of Kraft Heinz, a company known for its baked beans and tomato sauce, told BBC that it was raising its prices of food items in many countries across the world. He also mentioned that inflation was “across the board” and that consumers have to be prepared for food price rise to remain. Prices have increased not only in the U.S. but in several countries due to a combination of factors.

As a result of the pandemic, production of raw materials in several countries had fallen. Some of these materials included crops and vegetable oils. There were also other reasons such as illnesses due to COVID-19, a limited output as well as limited delivery.

Although economies worldwide are restarting, there is limited supply despite growing demand. So, there is a rise in price. Some of the factors that have lead to an increase in price include wage rise as workers are expecting higher wages. There is also a shortfall of energy around the world, which is also contributing to a hike in prices. Logistics cost, shortage in truck drivers and supply chain woes are also adding to production costs.

Mr. Patricio also told the BBC that consumers would have to get used to higher food prices. He said that while the human population was increasing, the amount of land to grow food on was not increasing. He added that advancements in technology would help to farmers improve their efficacy. He also said that companies should absorb some of these costs and not pass all of them to customers.

Costs of basic commodities such as corn, sugar, vegetable oils and more have been increasing. Climate change, reduced acreage, increase in fertilizer, labor, energy costs, increase in shipping costs and other factors have lead to a price rise, according to Kona Haque, head of agricultural research at ED&F Man, an agricultural commodities firm.

Haque said that the increase in costs is going to be widespread and all companies are going to raise prices, so they will not lose customers, despite a hike. Price rise in food items are here to stay and consumers will have to accept it.

CNN’s Jim Acosta fires at Andrew Yang for appearing on Tucker Carlson Show

0

On Saturday afternoon, during an interview on CNN, Jim Acosta used an expletive as he questioned Andrew Yang for appearing on Tucker Carlson Today. The CNN host did not spare the entrepreneur who is also a politician. Andrew Yang is on a makeover as he projects himself as the right person to head a third party that would not only be new but would also be inclusive. However, his recent appearance Carlson’s show had a profound effect on Acosta.

According to a report by the Daily Beast, Acosta told Yang, “Tucker Carlson…I mean, let’s just say he’s a bad person.” Acosta added that Tucker represented all that was wrong in television news and that he “spouted white nationalist talking points.” and asked why Yang appeared on his show.

Earlier, Yang had discussed leaving the Democratic party to take a new path forward during his appearance on the daytime show hosted by Tucker Carlson. Carlson responded by speaking highly of the Unabomber and said that although he was a “bad person,” he had a “smart analysis” according to Carlson, “of the way systems work.”

Carlson added that the Unabomber’s argument was that large organizations became self-preservation projects after a period of time. Carlson also said that a big system in the end protected itself and “that’s kind of all it does.”

This response by Carlson made Acosta ask Yang another question on why he “didn’t go after” Carlson when he was “citing the Unabomber and just talking about crazy stuff?”

Andrew Yang replied to Acosta and said that he was working to bring down the temperature of the country and to meet folks “where they are.” Yang added that Tucker had a huge audience. Yang said that if a person wanted to attempt to “build a unifying popular movement” that made it a point to show that the present system was not working for anyone, then a person had to “reach out.”

He explained that he was “doing” that on the show as he wanted to have Republicans who were discontent to channel this emotion in a “positive way.” Yang said that his view was that things were not going in a positive direction and he would “like to help change that.”

Shortages in grocery stores supplies are a distinct possibility as holidays approach

0

If you have been looking forward to seeing grocery shelves in your local store or supermarket filled with the foods you missed out due to the pandemic this fall and winter you might be disappointed. However, don’t lose hope as there will still be more available this year than what was on shelves last year. It is just that quantities may be limited as availability of goods has not as yet reached pre-pandemic levels.

Manufacturers are trying to do their best to supply all the favorite foods that Americans demand and expect as the holiday season is approaching. However, they are concentrating on manufacturing core products and stopping or slowing the production of niche products.

CNN has viewed a few mails and also interviewed grocers. It has concluded that several products might not be available in fall and even up to winter.

Some of the items that might face shortages include

Rice Krispies Treats
Sour Patch Kids
A few flavors of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream
McCormick’s Gourmet Spices
Marie Callender’s pot pies.

The reasons for the shortfall range from labor shortage to commodity and transportation constraints that have gripped supply chains. Grocers have also been asked to refrain from promoting these items especially during the holidays, so stocks can last a little longer and stay on shelves. Promotions and offers may exacerbate an already difficult situation and lead to empty shelves at a quicker pace.

Recently Costco and Sam’s Club have reinstated purchase limits on certain consumer products including paper and cleaning supplies. Food brands have also starting putting purchase caps or allocations on certain products.

According to the latest data from IRI, which tracks stock levels at various pharmacies, wholesale and grocery chains and more, during the week ending on October 3, the following items were out of stock:

approximately 18 percent of beverages
roughly 15 percent of frozen foods
about 15 percent of candy
roughly 16 percent of snacks
approximately 18 percent of bakery items.

However, one positive note among all the shortages is that the situation is much better when compared with 2020 and manufacturers are doing their best to ensure that all core items will be available. It is mainly indulgent, niche and exclusive items that might be unavailable this fall and winter.

Taiwan President Tsai says won’t bow to Beijing pressure during National Day celebrations

0

On Sunday, President Tsai Ing-wen said that Taiwan would not bow to pressure from China. Her strong speech, during the National Day celebrations has followed recent remarks by Chinese President Xi Jinping who had promised to “fulfill reunification.” While Taiwan considers itself to be a sovereign state, Beijing calls it a breakaway province of China.

Ms. Tsai won the elections, once again, last year by a landslide as she had indicated that Beijing would not pressure the nation when she was in office. On Sunday, she described Taiwan as “standing on democracy’s first line of defense.”

She added that although they would not act in a rash manner, they would increase their defense systems so as to take their own path forward and not a path that was laid out by Beijing, which she described as being neither “free” nor “democratic” for 23 million Taiwanese. She mentioned that the nation favored more pressure from China as its achievements were increasing.

Tsai also touched on a recent difficult incident when Chinese military flights came very close to Taiwan airspace, a while ago. She termed this as more complex and fluid that anything else that had occurred at nay point of time “in the past 72 years.” There was a show of military strength of Taiwan, as military trucks passed the stage, during her speech.

The Taiwanese president has offered to talk to Beijing as equals. However, Chinese leaders dub her as “separatist” and have rejected her offer of talks, to date.

Tsai also spoke of “maintaining status quo” and said that they would do their best to ensure that it remained, despite Beijing’s talks of reunification with mainland China, similar to what took place with Hong Kong.

This year, celebrations were held outside the office of the presidency in Taipei, due to the pandemic. Hundreds gathered for the celebrations but the numbers, of both members of the public as well as foreign guests, were much less than yesteryears due to COVID-19 precautionary measures.

Visitors vaccinated with WHO or FDA approved vaccines can enter U.S.

0

Late Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the United States will accept vaccines that have been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is the US regulator. Travelers who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to enter the nation.

The six vaccines that are approved by the FDA or WHO for emergency use are the following:

Pfizer-BioNTech
Moderna
Janssen/Johnson & Johnson
Oxford/AstraZeneca
Sinopharm
Sinovac.

The decision has been welcomed by Airlines for America, a trade group that represents major American airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and others. They have been looking forward to international travel restrictions from the beginning of the pandemic.

The vaccines approved by the FDA have not been used widely around the world. So, several countries requested the Biden administration to include vaccines that have been approved by the WHO. The newly approved lists has gone far to assuage the governments of many countries who had opened their borders to U.S. visitors, several months ago.

The CDC said that they had informed airlines about the vaccines that would be approved for international visitors to the nation. It also said that it would provide them with “additional guidance and information” when the travel requirements get finalized.

The CDC had sent contact tracing rules that would be implemented for international travelers to the White House on September 15. After they are reviewed, the final set of rules will be published by the CDC. Almost all flyers, including those who did not have prior restrictions, will have to follow the new guidelines.

The CDC will also have to provide guidelines for those who are exempted from getting vaccinated including children. Different countries around the world have different vaccine guidelines for children.

Other guidelines could include the status of those who are a part of ongoing clinical trials of vaccines as well as those who have recently been infected with COVID-19 and are currently ineligible to take a vaccine.

The Biden administration had said that visitors could travel to the U.S. in November. Visitors from the following countries will be allowed

Schengen countries in the European Union
Great Britain
China
India
Ireland
Iran
Brazil
South Africa
India.

Former and current staffers say, The Wrap boss degrades them, call the workplace “toxic”

Recently, 20 current and past staffers of The Wrap spoke to The Daily Beast and poured their woes about Sharon Waxman, the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Hollywood independent media company. However, current staff also justified her behavior and call the workplace a high energy environment as it dealt with breaking news and more.

Staffers who spoke to the outlet said that the workplace was “toxic” and that there were screaming outbursts and more. Disgruntled or disappointed staffers compared her to the main character in the movie the Devil Wears Prada or to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, both fictional characters, who had erratic and highly emotional behavior. One staffer said that she ruled the office with an “iron fist.”

One incident that did create a negative impact was when Waxman shouted at an employee in fall 2020 for taking time off to accompany his fiancé for a cancer checkup. Waxman’s husband was also in charge of the human resources department. So, ex-employees felt that they had no where to turn to when they faced problems at work.

The Daily Beast also spoke to Waxman’s publicist. The Wrap’s spokesperson said that Sharon remembered the incidents that the disgruntled workers mentioned differently. However, Waxman also held a meeting on Thursday where she promised staff that she would do better. She also said that she would bring in independent consultanty services to improve the culture at the workplace.

Waxman also sent the Daily Beast a statement where she said that they had a team of “resilient, creative and collaborative people” and that they were hiring “outside expertise to address the “culture” and the “concerns” at The Wrap.

Thom Geier, the deputy and executive editor of The Wrap told the Daily Beast that although Sharon was a demanding and blunt boss what’s happening was the result of working in a breaking news environment and it happened at every news outlet he worked at and that The Wrap was similar to other outlets.

Elizabeth Waxman is the founder and chief executive of The Wrap. She has been a foreign correspondent and a New York Times columnist. She was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. She was also feared, when she worked as a Hollywood reporter before she founded her media company in 2009. The 58-year old columnist is also the public face of The Wrap as well as its top editor.
