Shortage of bus drivers reported in over 50 percent of the school districts in the U.S.

0

As schools have reopened in September across the nation, there is a huge shortage of drivers. Many parents are finding it difficult and expensive to send their kids to school as they sometimes have to use ride hailing services, when the school bus is canceled. It is not a shortage in a state or two but more than half the states in the U.S. are reporting that there are insufficient drivers available for schools.

A nationwide survey showed that more than 50 percent of the school districts in America reported that they were facing a desperate situation due to a “severe” shortage of drivers. Some of the reasons for the shortage included retirement by many drivers as a result of the pandemic. Some drivers were reportedly scared of returning to their jobs as they would have to have face-to-face interactions with kids who might be infected.

Other factors include low pay, inconvenient scheduling, and few benefits. These problems have existed even before the pandemic. Erratic schedules are becoming common due to shortages. Drivers are expected to drive multiple routes, so students have to wait a long time to board or ride in school buses. Students who had a 15-minute bus ride were now facing a 90-minute journey.

Chip Slaven, interim director for the National School Boards Association told the New York Times that the shortage of workers existed before the pandemic and that school districts have struggled in the past as well. He said that the problem was already there. It had just become from “bad” to “worse.”

Massachusetts deployed the National Guard to drive buses as the shortage was chronic and Pennsylvania is considering the same solution to face the shortage. Baltimore said that drivers are regularly calling to say that they are sick.

It is not easy to get a job as a bus driver. Potential candidates need a commercial driver’s license to operate a bus. The procedure to get such a license is long as it requires several months of training. Schools are not only facing shortages of bus drivers but are facing a crunch of other staff including substitute teachers and cafeteria workers.

Sitcom star Mayim Bialik and winner Ken Jennings to host Jeopardy till end of 2021

0

On Thursday, game show Jeopardy announced that TV star Mayim Bialik and former contestant Ken Jennings will take turns to host Jeopardy till the end of the year. Last November, iconic host Alex Trebek passed away after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. The show was then hosted by a series of guest stars.

Mike Richards, an executive producer, and guest host took over the reins of the popular show in August but had to step down in days after old tweets and comments on a podcast called “The Randumb Show” resurfaced. Jennings had been extremely rude in commenting about women, Jews, Haiti and more. Although, he apologized publicly, he had to step down from the post of host and later stepped down as executive producer in the end of August.

Bialik had already been hired to host special episodes of the game show but will now also host regular shows starting from Monday and will continue to do so through November, following which she and Jennings will host the rest of the shows along with Bailik for the year depending on their other engagements, according to the Sony network, the producer of Jeopardy.

Mayim Bialik is popular among audiences for her appearance in Blossom as well as in CBS’ popular TV sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Ken Jennings is the record holder for the longest winning streak in the show.

Both these stars/future hosts also face controversies. Dr. Mayim Bialik faced flak when she spoke against vaccinating her children in the past. She has mentioned that she vaccinated them on social media, since. She has also endorsed a supplement, whose value is unproven, according to peers.

Ken Jennings has also been called out for past tweets which were rude and insensitive according to many and which surfaced when he became a guest host on Jeopardy. He has apologized, since.

The search for a permanent replacement for the beloved Canadian host Alex Trebek continues as various guest and interim hosts try to fill in the huge gap left by the affable, practical, and longtime Jeopardy host Trebek.

After sharing the news that Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings would host Jeopardy shows till the end of the year, the game show’s Twitter account also posted that the show’s staff were “supralunar.”

California Governor Newsom signs measures that help fight housing crisis into law after surviving recall

0

On Thursday, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that would expand housing production and would also streamline approvals for housing projects. This legislation should help in surmounting the housing crisis in the Golden State, one of the issues that the opposition brought up when Newsom was struggling with the recall vote though he finally sailed to victory.

The governor’s office announced that $1.75 billion will be allocated for a new “California Housing Accelerator.” The accelerator plan will hasten the construction of 6,500 affordable multi-family units. The construction was held up due to a lack of tax-exempt bonds and low-income taxing credits.

Newsom signed Senate Bill 9 into law. This bill is also called the California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency (HOME) Act. This act will facilitate additional housing to be constructed in single family zoned areas.

Another bill signed the governor was the Senate Bill 10 (SB 10). Local governments can gain access to an easy zoning process for new multi-unit housing if it is located near transit or urban infill areas, under SB 10. Up to 10 units can be built with an easing of processes under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

These legislations come at an appropriate time, after the governor is back at his seat, after a failed recall by the Republicans. A study in June by the University of California’s Berkeley Center for Community Innovation indicated that corrective measures have to be taken in the state to deal with the looming housing and wildfire crisis. Building in high-risk areas where wildfires predominate was more affordable for developers.

With the change in laws, mainly in urban development or redevelopment, builders and developers can increase urban projects. Another issue to be considered in the current housing crisis in California is to rebuild after fires, as wildfires are bound to escalate in the state due to climate change. If this issue is not tackled at the earliest, insurance costs are set to rise above affordable limits.

Anti-government protesters in El Salvador burn Bitcoin ATM, express anger against President Bukele

0

On Wednesday, several thousand people marched to the central plaza of the capital city San Salvador. It was the bicentennial celebrations of El Salvador. However, the citizens had much to complain about including the introduction of cryptocurrency Bitcoin and the consolidation of power by the current President Nayib Bukele; both of which have sparked widespread anger.

Although most of the protesters were peaceful, one grouped was not. They smashed windows and set fire to a Bitcoin ATM. The kiosk has been set up after the El Salvadorian government had announced that BitCoin would be a legal tender in the state along with the U.S. dollar.

The demonstrators were carrying signs that said, “no to dictatorship” and “we were defrauded by Bitcoin” expressing their anger against the current president Nayib Bukele. Some of the protesters in El Salvador also said, “No to corrupt money laundering.” Opponents say that the president has concentrated power on the presidential post as well as decreased the power of the judiciary in the nation.

Bukele’s New Ideas party won a Congressional majority this year. It brought in sweeping changes including replacements of five members of the Constitutional Chamber. It also replaced the independent attorney general who was not in resonance with the actions of the 40-year-old President.

These changes have paved the way for Bukele to stand for presidential elections, once again in 2024 although he has not as yet announced his plan. Critics believe that the changes in the constitution were made to facilitate a second term for him.

The rollout of the Bitcoin in El Salvador has also be fraught with missteps and mismanagement. A Jesuit university based in the country called the Central American University (UCA) conducted a poll that reported that 67.9 percent of the 1,281 citizens polled were against the introduction of Bitcoin.

The rollout was also mismanaged with system bugs as well as frequent periods offline. AP had earlier reported that the crashes were caused as a result of the offer of a $30 bonus as an incentive to those who adopted the cryptocurrency.

PepsiCo indicates early 2022 launch date for new snacks and drinks with Beyond Meat

0

PepsiCo is planning to release several new plant-based snacks and drinks by early next year in a joint venture with Beyond Meat. Both the companies announced the joint venture in January, calling it The Planet Partnership.

Ramon Laguarta told CNBC’s Sara Eisen that it was only the beginning of what he thought would be a game changing joint venture (JV). The partnership is profitable for both the companies in different areas. Beyond is a fairly new company in the food industries and the JV is giving it leverage in both production and marketing with PepsiCo’s established expertise and huge operations.

PepsiCo is also deepening its investment in the plant- based category which now becoming a huge market. Beyond is a   top creator of meat substitutes and is a good partner for the company to invest in as it is innovative and growing its product range. The food and beverage giant is also working towards sustainable and health goals and the JV adds to those goals.

On Wednesday, PepsiCo had announced a new initiative which it called “Pep+.” It will usher in change in the company’s operations towards sustainability. Some of the goals that will be undertaken include

  • decreasing the use of plastic
  • reducing the amounts of added sugars and sodium in products
  • encouraging regenerative agricultural practices
  • using plant-based ingredients such as chickpea and whole grains in its chips products.

On CNBC’s Closing Bell, Lagarta said that people should not go to the office to make phone calls or to write emails. He called that a waste of commute, of personal time and something that would cause unnecessary pollution.

PepsiCo is also adding sustainability goals to its office structure by adopting a more flexible model. Corporate officials can return to office building for a few days in a week or even a few days in a month.

PepsiCo and Beyond shares closed up less than one percent on Wednesday. The food and beverage giant saw a five percent rise in value this year with a $216 billion market value while the meat substitutes company saw a fall of 11 percent in value this year and has a $7 billion market value.

Nicki Minaj claims White House invitation, officials say phone call offered to clear COVID-19 vaccine misconceptions

0

Wednesday was another busy day for Nicki Minaj on social media but this time around it was on Instagram. The rapper told her followers on Instagram that she was in “Twitter jail.” Later, she said that she got an invitation to the White House. However, White House officials clarified that she was not invited but was offered public health education on phone and not an in-person visit.

The rapper said that the White House had invited her, and she thought that it was a step in the right direction. She confirmed that she was going and that she would be “dressed in all pink like Legally Blonde.” She also said that she would ask questions on behalf of the people who had “been made fun of for simply being human.”

A White House official told PEOPLE that the administration has contacted her to offer public health education through a phone call. The official said that they offered a call with Nicki Minaj and a doctor to answer the questions she had about the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.

On Monday, Nicki Minaj had said on Twitter that she was not attending the MET gala because of the vaccine mandate requirement. She said that she would take the vaccine after she continued her research on it. She also asked her followers to wear masks with 2 strings that can grip the head and face and not “that loose one.”

However, she followed this tweet with a shared tweet that had information that could be considered as misinformation.   The story indicates that said that a family member’s friend “became impotent” after taking a vaccine. The tweet received backlash from doctors, politicians, news commentators and more as it was false information. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as Dr. Anthony Fauci said that this information was not true.

Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University told PEOPLE that if someone gets COVID-19 there could be an impact on the male reproductive system. However, symptoms including scrotal swelling and congestion are associated with the infection   and not with any vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the nation.

Piers Morgan has a new job, back with News Corp and Fox network in global deal

0

Piers Morgan said that he began his media career more than three decades ago with News Corp. and that he was thrilled to return with a mega global deal. He lost no time praising Rupert Murdoch, the   chairman of News Media Corp. In turn, Rupert Murdoch, the chief executive Robert Thomson, Rebekah Brooks chief executive of News U.K. and Keith Poole, editor-in-chief of the New York Post Group lavishly praised controversial Piers. Their mutual admiration and praise might be considered over the top remarks by others who don’t really admire or care for them or   their brand of journalism.

Some of his assignments that are a part of the global deal include the following:

  • Piers Morgan will host a global TV show that will air on FOX Nation in the nation and on Sky News, Australia. It also be available on a new TV channel called talk TV in the U.K.
  • He will present several true crime series documentaries.
  • He has signed a book deal with leading publisher HarperCollins U.K., owned by News Corp. following the success of his book “Wake Up,” which was a best seller.
  • He will be a columnist for the newspapers: The Sun and The New York Post.

New UK’s London Bridge studios will product and film his talk show. On September 16, the company also announced early 2022 as the proposed date for the launch of talk TV.

Piers Morgan said that he was going home, and they were going to have some fun. The former host of Good Morning Britain (GMB) is not new to controversy. He had stormed of the set of the popular ITV morning show in the U.K. after he was called out for belittling Meghan Markle in his crass comments on mental health struggles and more on the show.

He stepped down from GMB, after refusing to apologize for his rude comments which was called out by the Duchess of Sussex and almost 57,800 other complainants. Earlier this month, British regulators cleared Piers Morgan of wrongdoing. However, crass is crass and class is class. Six months later, the broadcaster is back where he began with News Corp.

Los Angeles County set to move ahead with proof of vaccination for bars, and night life venues.

0

Patrons in Los Angeles country will be required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to enter bars, and other venues such as indoor portions of bars, wineries, breweries, night clubs, and lounges.

With the urgent need to reduce transmission risk and increase vaccination coverage in L.A. County, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) will begin requiring verification of vaccination in select high-risk settings by October 7, 2021.

Public Health will issue a modified Health Officer Order later this week that would align with President Biden and require vaccination verification or a negative test within 72 hours prior to attending outdoor mega events. Attendees at indoor mega events are already required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test result prior to entry.

The announcement will begin on  Friday.  The health order would require customers and employees at bars, breweries, wineries, night clubs and lounges to have at least one dose of the vaccine by October 7 and both doses by November 4.

“I extend my deepest condolences to those who are grieving the loss of a friend, neighbor, coworker, or loved one at this time. Our hearts and thoughts remain with you,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “We in public health believe that targeted vaccination mandates are an important strategy for quickly raising vaccination coverage in our county and ending the pandemic, and we applaud our President, our Governor, our Board of Supervisors, our cities and school districts, and business establishments across the county for creating additional safety in spaces where people are intermingling with the use of targeted vaccination mandates. As evidence mounts affirming the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, vaccination mandates are an increasingly important tool to prevent future COVID surges that cause widespread suffering. The modified Health Officer Order aligns with the continued need to reduce risk for transmission and increase vaccination coverage; this is a reasonable path forward that can position us to be better able to break the cycle of surges.” Source: LA County Public Health
