Havana syndrome hits officials in the U.S. Embassy in Colombia

0

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that at least five families who have connections to the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, have been affected by strange neurological symptoms, which are termed as the Havana syndrome as they were first noticed in Cuba, several years ago. People familiar with the matter told the WSJ about this latest attack, about a week before Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken is scheduled to visit the country.

The WSJ reviewed emails sent to embassy personnel by ambassador Philip Goldberg. The state department said that it would look into the matter “seriously, with objectivity and with sensitivity.” The Bogota embassy is one of the most important as well as is one largest outposts of the nation. The exact number of people, who have been affected by symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness and memory loss that are typical of the Havana syndrome, is unknown.

In a briefing in Washington, Ned Price, the spokesman of the State Department said that officials would make sure that employees would “get the prompt care they need, in whatever form that takes.” However, the spokesman did not give additional information about the complaints.

On Tuesday, in an interview with the New York Times, Ivan Duque, the President of Colombia said that the U.S. was taking the lead on the investigation. He also said that there was an ongoing investigation by the country’s intelligence service.

The Havana syndrome had reportedly affected more than 200 U.S. government officials in countries such as Cuba in 2016 and recently in August in Vietnam when Vice President Harris trip was delayed to facilitate a medical evacuation . People including spies, military officers, diplomats and others have been affected. More than 50 percent of those who have been affected have been C.I.A. staff.

The Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to visit Columbia as scheduled. He could address several pressing issues including immigration as well as the political and humanitarian problems that are besetting its neighbor Venezuela.

Adele shares new album 30 cover, says divorce left her ‘sobbing and consumed with grief’

On Wednesday, British pop diva Adele officially posted on Instagram, information that her fans had already guessed thanks to the teasers that were released, weeks ago. It is official! Adele’s fourth album is called 30. She released the artwork on Instagram, on Wednesday. The album is similar to the pattern of earlier albums as Adele was 30 when she separated from husband Simon Konecki.

The cover features a side profile shot of the singer. Her profile can be seen against a blue-green background. She added a simple title: “30-November 19.”

She also shared a lengthy statement where she spoke of the many nights when she was “sobbing and was consumed with grief” due to the breakdown of her marriage and this provided the inspiration for her latest album–30.

The Grammy award winner spoke of the “inner turmoil” she struggled with and the “blistering home truths” that she had to face. She also noted that although she liked routine and consistency she had thrown herself “into a maze of absolute mess and inner turmoil.”

She said that this album was her “ride or die” and was conceived during the a time when she faced the most turbulence, ever. She also spoke of the friends who supported her during those difficult times. She spoke of facing a few mental health issues.

In April 2019, Adele and charity CEO Simon said that they were separating. Five months later the singer filed for divorce. They had dated for seven years. They were married for two years. They have an eight-year old son Angelo, whom they co-parent.

The Someone Like You singer is now dating Rich Paul, a sports manager with high profile sports clients including LeBron James. Adele said that it was wild and she felt safe with Paul in a recent Vogue interview. She said that she didn’t feel anxious or nervous or frazzled.

Her last LP 25 was released in 2015 and sold 23 million copies. Her current album 30 was to be dropped in 2020 but was delayed due to COVID-19. The Hello singer’s record label Sony is planning a November release. The tracks will reflect on her divorce.

Dutch monarch can enter same-sex marriage without losing right to throne, PM says

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that the Dutch crown princess could marry a person of any gender and could still keep her right to the throne. This issue became important after books, which mentioned that Netherlands’ rules excluded the possibility of a same-sex marriage for the royals, were published. The country was the first one in the world to legalize gay marriage in 2001.

The 17-year old Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia has not commented on the matter. There is also very little information available about her personal life. Royal marriages in the country need to obtain approval from the Parliament. In the past, some members have given up their right to the throne, in order to marry without permission.

In a letter to Parliament, the Prime Minister said that attitudes were now different from what they had been in 2000 when the then Prime Minister had addressed this issue. He also said that the government believed that the heir could “marry a person of the same sex.”

He added that the cabinet did not see the necessity of “an heir to the throne or King” to abdicate if he/she wanted to marry a person of the same sex.

The Prime Minister mentioned that as of now it was unclear how a same-sex marriage would affect the succession of the royal couple’s children. He thought that it would depend on the facts and circumstances of a particular case. He noted that family laws had changed in the country, over time.

The current heir to the Dutch throne is 17-year old Catharina-Amalia. She is the daughter of King Willem-Alexander. Earlier this year, she had declared that she would not accept an €1.6 million allowance per year from the country, which would have automatically accrued to her as she turned eighteen. She said that it made her feel “uncomfortable.”

Snapchat crashes worldwide and users cannot use their phones

0

Worldwide users have said that they are unable to use the popular photo sharing app Snapchat. The outage reportedly happened close to 06:50 ET, Wednesday and more than 14,000 users have already complained. Some users in the U.S. are able to use the app, as of now. Most of the users posted on Twitter that Snapchat was down. Many of them also went to Downdetector to report the outage.

Snapchat tweeted on their page that they were aware that some Snapchatters were having issues and said that they were looking into it. The Snapchat Support Twitter account also asked users to sent a DM with details and they would look into the matter. They also suggested that users should log out and log back in and refresh their connection.

When MailOnline asked the app for comment, they didn’t receive a response, to date.

According to the Daily Mail, Jake Moore, who is a cybersecurity expert, said that the problem was not due to a cyberattack but was mainly because of the increase in volume and scale as many social media sites were huge with billions of users logged in. Moore said that the impact and risk could be mitigated if these platforms spread their infrastructure measures across different internal platforms.

The cybersecurity expert also admitted that unfortunately “hindsight” was “a virtue with these platforms” that had “become so enormous.”

Last Monday, when Facebook and other apps including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger were down for approximately six hours, Snapchat saw a 20 percent rise in users. The BBC said that the outage reportedly cost Mark Zuckerberg $6 billion.

After last week’s blackout, Instagram announced on Tuesday that it was testing a new alert feature. This feature would inform users when the app was down.

Pelosi “very disappointed” that original spending bill won’t pass, tells media IRS plans are on

0

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made her feelings very clear when she said that she was “very disappointed” that the original $3.5 trillion package has to be shrunk to pass in the Senate. She told reporters that she thought that the media didn’t do enough to get the proposal across to Americans as a poll showed that few Americans knew what was part of the plan.

In a statement released late Monday evening, the House Speaker said that although they were talking of a smaller bill, it would have an impact. She didn’t mention which of proposed plans could be cut form the bill. However, she did mentioned that the “Build Back Better agenda for jobs and the planet For The Children” would have a have a “transformative impact on families in the workplace and responsibly address the climate crisis.” She also mentioned that the duration of the plans could be shortened.

During a news conference, a reporter had told her that banks were fielding anxious calls from customers who were worried about the IRS proposal in the bill. The proposal says that banks have to hand over transaction details on accounts that cross $600.

When asked if the proposal would remain, she answered, “Yes, yes, yes.”

Pelosi said that although there were concerns about the proposal, it would only apply if people were breaking the law and not paying taxes. The banking measure was one way to track them. She said that negotiations about the amount that will be tracked could go on but the proposal will remain.

Several states told the Daily Mail that they would be non compliant saying that the public was against the proposal. The Office of Tax Analysts said that the proposal could net in an addition $463 billion over the next ten years.

Pelosi also told the media that they could have done a “better job of selling it” when asked if she and the Democrats needed to do a better job at messaging and selling the proposal to the people of America.

Will Shiba Inu Rally make Dogecoin follow 400 percent increase

0

Shiba Inu, which calls itself “Dogecoin Killer” has seen a 400 percent rally in the two days after billionaire and crypto influencer Elon Musk posted a picture of his Shiba Inu dog. The meme coin had been doing badly earlier and this was a much needed boost from the Dogefather, Elon Musk.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had mentioned that he was thinking of adopting a Shiba Inu dog and the market rallied. When Musk actually posted a picture of the adopted Shiba Inu dog called Floki, there was a surge in dog themed coins in the crypto markets. However, the biggest beneficiary was the Shiba Inu meme coin. The value of this crypto token surged within a few hours.

After SpaceX founder posted a picture of his dog on Twitter, Shiba Inu rose by 30 percent. The following day saw a huge rally as its value rose tremendous by 400 percent. This is the highest ever for the meme coin.

There are 394 trillion Shiba Inu coins circulating in the market. At its new price point, the SHIB is at a market cap of $10 billion. The altcoin is now the 12th largest digital coin in terms of market cap.

The Dogecoin was the first dog themed meme coin (DOGE) and it became extremely popular after tweets by crypto influencers including Mark Cuban and Elon Musk. Its popularity led to an influx of other dog themed altcoins.

The Dogecoin remains at the top of the litter and is at the tenth position among all crypto currencies. It has a market cap of $33.26 billion and is said to have a bullish run. Will it also see a rally soon is what many are hoping for but it is a wait and watch policy as of now. The SHIB has surged ahead of the DOGE but will it cross it in market cap remains to be seen.

Madonna had some regrets for missing some amazing roles in her entertainment career

0

Did you know that the Material Girl is a teeny-tinny bit like the rest of us? Ah! Yes. The Queen of Pop who is known for her fierce attitude towards life admitted that she had regrets, like the rest of us. On an appearance on The Tonight Showing Starring Jimmy Fallon, on Thursday, Madonna admitted that she had missed out on starring in blockbusters despite being offered them and she had “teeny-tiny” regrets.

Madonna was on Fallon’s show to promote her documentary Madam X but the focus quickly shifted to the rumored roles she had turned down especially as the True Blue pop singer revealed some of the names of these films.

Fallon asked Madonna about two roles that she purportedly turned down:

Catwoman in Batman Returns
Nomi Malone in Show Girl

While Madonna dismissed the role in Show Girls as something that she didn’t really care about, she did describe the role of Catwoman as “fierce” and said that she regretted passing on the role.

However, the blond bombshell threw in a surprise that kept everyone buzzing about. Her stunning revelation was that she had turned down a role in The Matrix. She asked the 47-year old Fallon, “Can you believe that?” She added that she “wanted to kill” herself.

The Queen of Pop is most likely referring to the role of Trinity, the only female lead in the film. It was played by Carrie-Ann Moss.

Fallon joked, “Poor Madonna.”

Madonna added that The Matrix was the one of the best movies to have ever been made and said that a “teeny-tiny part” of her regretted “just that one moment” in her life.

The Matrix trilogy grossed more than $1.6 billion dollars including global releases. There will be a fourth film called The Matrix Resurrections that is scheduled to be released in December.

The 63-year old pop diva, whose music career is legendary, could have had a legendary movie career as well had she not passed over these two roles. Well, she does have a Paramount+ concert special soon so she will continue to enthrall fans and others as well as perhaps direct more movies in future.

Southwest Airlines flights continue to be canceled or disrupted, weekend and Monday travel affected

0

Cancelations by Southwest Airlines over the weekend came close to 2000 over the weekend and crossed this number on Monday. The airlines reported that the delays were due to “weather challenges” as well as “unexpected air traffic control issues” in Florida. However, other airlines faced very few disruptions in the same period and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the air traffic control staffing shortage occurred “for a few hours Friday afternoon.”

In a Friday court filing, the union called a vaccine mandate by Southwest Airlines unlawful and said that it imposed “new conditions of employment” on pilots. It requested a judge to prevent the airline from enforcing that requirement as well as other polices and actions.

Many Republicans comments about vaccine mandates as the cause of the disruptions was due to the timing of the disruptions. Some of them included Tucker Carlson, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump Jr.

However, on Saturday, the Southwest’s pilot union said that their pilots were “not participating in any official or unofficial job actions.”

On Monday, Southwest released another statement which said that they had several cancelations due to weather and external constraints. They said that these issues resulted in aircrafts and crews not being in pre-planned positions which in turn affected their operations on Saturday.

Last week, the union had raised objections about Southwest airlines vaccine mandate policy. The pilots’ union said that it was not against vaccinations. However, it also cautioned that there could be labor shortages and flight disruptions if the mandate was enforced.

Other airlines including United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airlines have also put forth vaccine mandates but have not suffered from major disruptions or huge shortage of staff. Delta Air Lines has not mandated vaccinations but unvaccinated employees pay an additional $200 per month for health insurance. Southwest, which is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, was one of the last few airlines to mandate vaccines by early December.

Late Sunday, Southwest Airlines Pilot Association (SWAPA) president Casey Murray released a statement said that there were “false claims” of job actions by their pilots on “social media” and that there were no “work slowdowns or sickouts” that were “related to the recent mandatory vaccine mandate or otherwise.”
