Walmart offers Nintendo Switch bundle for $299 with free Switch online membership plus carrying case

0

If you have missed picking a Nintendo Switch deal on Cyber Monday, you still have some good options to get a similar good deal from Walmart. The big box retailer is offering a new deal on a Nintendo Switch. This deal on the popular console includes a 12-month Nintendo Switch online membership free as well as a free carrying case.

The Nintendo Switch bundle costing $299 is actually worth more than $50 extra as its out of the box free extras include a 12-year membership that costs $19.99 and a carrying case that costs $35. Walmart had not mentioned the duration of the deal but it’s attractive especially if you have missed Cyber Monday deals or if you want to treat yourself or a family member or friend with a console as a gift.

This bundle includes the standard Nintendo Switch at $299 and not the Nintendo Switch OLED which costs $349. The Nintendo Switch OLED version was the new launch this fall by the gaming company.

The older model of Switch is more easily available and is still a resource that offers a lot of fun allowing you to play games on your TV as well as on the go.

Some of the games that are a part of the Nintendo games library include

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Metroid Dread

Nintendo is also planning to introduce new games in 2022 some of which might be as follows:

Bayonetta 3
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Breath of the Wild sequel.

Although there were better deals on the Nintendo Switch on Cyber Monday, most of the deals have ended though you can check the Walmart site for other Nintendo Switch deals as well.

A noteworthy point is that consoles rarely go on sale. Bundles offered with a console are most probably the best deal you could get with a console. There is a possibility that newer consoles may be offered again closer to the end of the holiday season but we consider this current deal to be one of the better deals on consoles from Walmart.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of teen suspect in Michigan School shooting, arrested in Detroit

Oakland County Sheriff’s Office

In the early hours of Saturday, James and Jennifer Crumbley were arrested at a building in Detroit, Michigan. They were expected to report at a court for their arraignment on Friday afternoon in Rochester Hills. They had been charged with involuntary manslaughter after their son reportedly shot four children and injured seven people at a deadly shooting at Oxford High School.

According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, the parents missed the court deadline and were declared to be fugitives. The U.S. Marshals Service offered a reward to any one who could provide information that would help arrest them.

Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe told the Free Press that the owner of the building arrived and saw an unknown car in the back parking lot of his building. He knew that the vehicle didn’t belong there and went to investigate. He recognized the car as the one that was sought by law enforcement and called 911.

On Saturday, at about 3 a.m, Detroit Police Chief James White told reporters that it was believed that someone had let in the Crumbleys into a commercial building. The police arrived in and around 1100 block of Bellevue near E. Lafayette about 10 p.m. or 10.30 p.m. The Crumbleys were found hiding inside an industrial building. He said that they were “distressed” and unarmed.

He also said that that security video showed that one of the Crumbley’s had entered the building and this helped the police to find them. They searched through the Bellevue building which houses several businesses. By about 1.45 a.m. they arrested James and Jennifer Crumbley.

The Crumbleys were handed over to the U.S. Marshals and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. They will be arraigned, later Saturday.

James Crumbley had bought the 9mm Sig Sauer that was used by Ethan in the shooting at Oxford High School on Black Friday at a local gun shop. Jennifer Crumbley had mentioned that the firearm was a “new Christmas present” for her son. They had left the gun unlocked and it was used by their son in the mass shooting at a Michigan school.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Spooks viewers enough into making it a $44M opening weekend

0

Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife fetched $16.1 million on Saturday, which is close to the amount received by Ghostbusters in 2016. The opening weekend sales were $44 million, making it the top domestic grosser. It replaced Disney’s Eternals, according to estimates from Comscore.

The Paul Feig Ghostbusters all female revival grossed $46 million in its opening weekend. This sequel, by Jason Reitman–Ghostbusters: Afterlife reached close to the 2016 movie with its $44 million opening weekend. The fourth installment of the scary franchise had been delayed due to the pandemic. It was expected to gross between $30 million to $35 million. The more than expected opening weekend not only gave larger profits to Sony and the rest but also indicated that viewers are back at the movies. Theaters in the heartlands saw huge crowds coming in to watch the movie.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman, who is the son of the Ivan Reitman, the filmmaker of the original Ghostbusters. Its cast includes

Paul Rudd
Carrie Coon
McKenna Grace
Logan Kim
Celeste O’Connor
Finn Wolfhard.

This new generation of ghost hunters investigate strange happenings in their neighborhood. One nostalgic feature in this film is cameos by the original ghostbusters including

Bill Murray
Dan Aykroyd
Ernie Hudson.

Harold Ramis the fourth ghostbuster doesn’t appear in a cameo as he passed away in 2014.

Sony also licensed merchandise of the sequel in many new collaborations including

apparel
publishing
toys
collectibles
seasonal gaming
interactive games
home goods and more.

The comedy sequel will play continuously over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It remains to be seen how well Ghostbusters: Afterlife will do over the next few weeks. It had a good start but will audiences continue to return to theaters as in pre-pandemic times remains to be seen. The box office weekend has shown that the initial response has been good.

Dina, Lindsay Lohan’s mother gets 18 day prison sentence after guilty plea in drunk driving crash

0

In January 2020, 59-year old Dina, who is the mother of Lindsay Lohan, was arrested for driving while drunk. ABC7 obtained court documents that showed that she was sentenced to 18 days behind bars, on Friday. She had pleaded guilty to felony drunk driving, earlier in the year. She also faces five years of probation after her arrest on Long Island in 2020. She had been driving her Mercedes with a suspended license

Dina pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle when intoxicated. She also pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident after she crashed into another vehicle. Lohan had tried to flee the scene after she crashed into a car near Merrick Mall, last January. The driver called the police when she fled the scene.

The victim of the car crash chased Dina as she tried to leave the scene of the accident. She was taken into custody outside her residence. The court documents stated that a police officer who responded found Dina in the driver seat of a Mercedes car with the engine on. He observed her and said that she had alcohol on her breath, glassy eyes and slurred speech.

He also said that when she got out of he car, she fell to the ground. Dina accused the officer of pushing her. She also said that she imbibed a single glass of wine.

Dina has agreed not to appeal against her conviction. She has to take part in a victim impact panel. She also has to participate in a recidivist alcohol probation program. She also lost her driving license for 18 months as it was revoked. She has to install an ignition interlock device on her vehicle during probation. Dina will also pay a few surcharges. As of now, it is unclear when Dina will face her prison sentence.

This is not the first time that Dina has faced DUI charges. In 2014, she was convicted of aggravated drunken driving. She had been arrested earlier in Nassau County. She had to undertake community service and also had to take part in an anti-drunken driving program.

Dina Lohan had starred in the reality TV show “Living Lohan.” It appeared on E!, in 2008 between May and July. Her daughter is the popular actor Lindsay Lohan.

Oxford High School shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley’s parents face involuntary manslaughter charge

0

Jennifer and James Crumbley, who are the parents of the 15-year old who has been accused of shooting four students at Oxford High School in Michigan, have been charged with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter.

Authorities said that James Crumbley purchased a 9mm Sig Sauer SP 2022 pistol on Black Friday at a local gun shop in Michigan. They said that Ethan Crumbley had accompanied him and was with him when it was purchased.

Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a press conference on Friday that Jennifer Crumbley said that the gun was a “new Christmas present” for their son, on a post on social media. The gun had been stored in a drawer that was unlocked in the parents’ bedroom.

McDonald also said that the charges were intended “to hold the individuals who contributed” to the “tragedy” to be held accountable for their actions. The charges would also send a message to gun owners that they had a responsibility and if they failed to uphold their responsibility there would be “serious and criminal consequences.”

The gun that was purchased at the shop in Oxford township, which is a small community that is located north of Detroit, Michigan, was used to shoot students in Oxford High School. Four students died. Six other students and a 47-year old teacher are battling injuries suffered in the Michigan school shooting.

Ethan Crumbley is facing 24 felony counts including

four counts of first degree murder
seven counts of assault with intent to murder
one count of terrorism
12 counts of possession of a firearm.

Each of his parents are facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Crumbley has been denied bail. He will remain in prison but will be isolated from other adult prisoners. If found guilty, he could face life in prison.

Ghislaine Maxwell was a ‘master manipulator’, Epstein accuser says as Maxwell trial is on

0

A former masseuse described Ghislaine Maxwell as a “master manipulator.” Theresa Helm who leveled this charge against the British socialite, is not a part of the ongoing trial against Maxwell. Helm is a masseuse who accused Jeffrey Epstein of sexually assaulting her in 2002. She was 22-years old and had been told to give him a massage by Maxwell.

Helm said that she had been approached for a massage therapist’s job in 2002 by someone whom she described as a “polite socialite.” She was 22 years old and was attending college in California when she met Maxwell.

She recalled her experience at 41, when she spoke to the BBC. She said that she had been excited when she was approached by the socialite as she “immediately felt comfortable around her.” At that time, flying to New York sounded like a “dream” job.

On Wednesday, she told the outlet that she had given Maxwell a massage. She was then told that she had to meet Jeffrey Epstein at his Upper East Side home. It was there that he sexually assaulted her.

Helm said that Maxwell had told her that she should make sure that she gave Jeffrey what he wanted as “Jeffrey always gets what he wants.” She added that Maxwell was the reason why she entered “the home of a predator.”

The current Ohio resident also said that that she was now aware that this was “part of the tactic of a master manipulator.”

Describing her meeting with Maxwell to the BBC she said that she felt that she was in an “educated and successful woman’s home” in New York. She mentioned that she thought that Maxwell was the intended client as she initially performed a massage on her. Maxwell reportedly fell asleep so Helm thought that the meeting was “going well.”

Helm mentioned that she was told later that there was a “second part” of the interview. She had to meet Epstein at his townhouse that was located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She was sexually assaulted at his residence.

Helm has since accepted compensation and will reportedly receive shares from a $100 million payout from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate.

Meanwhile in New York, the Ghislaine Maxwell trial is entering its fourth day. Her defense lawyers are doing their best to undermine the testimonies of the victims who are testifying against her. All four of them were underage when they were sexually assaulted by pedophile and financier, the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Unvaccinated cancer patients have 1.7 times higher risk of getting COVID-19 and 1.6 times higher risk of death

0

On Thursday, researchers published their findings on the effects of vaccines on veterans who were also cancer patients. The results were published in JAMA Oncology and concluded that vaccinated cancer patients had lower chances of getting infected with COVID-19 or dying as a result of the infection.

The researchers from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) matched almost 30,000 vaccinated U.S. veterans who were receiving care from the VA to 30,000 veterans who were not vaccinated. Each pair that was matched was similar to the other in factors such as age, race and location of residence.

Both the members of each pair also received follow up checks at the same time from these researchers. The follow up time was about 47 days after they had agreed to be a part of the research group.

The researchers reported that 275 unvaccinated veterans had been infected with COVID-19 between the study enrollment and the check-up while 161 of the vaccinated veterans were infected with the virus in the same time period. This is a 70 percent difference.

The researchers also reported that 27 veterans in the unvaccinated group had died after being infected with COVID-19 between the study enrollment and the check-up while 17 veterans in the vaccinated group succumbed to a COVID infection in the same period. This is an almost 60 percent difference in mortality rate.

The researchers also noted that vaccine effectiveness might decrease with factors such as “age, and malignancy and anti-cancer treatments may be immunosuppresive.”

They also said that these were the factors that might account for “reduced effectiveness” of vaccines that are observed among some patients who have cancer. The effectiveness of the vaccines was much higher among the general population and was estimated to be 89 percent to 92 percent.

The researchers at VA have reported that although cancer patients might not get as much efficacy from vaccines as the general public, those of whom are vaccinated have lesser chances of getting infected with COVID-19 or dying from the infection. However, it must be noted that the research was conducted before the delta variant surge took place across the nation and much before the Omicron variant started spreading across the world.

DeSantis proposes Florida State Guard, a voluntary, civilian military force to be under his control

0

On Thursday, Ron DeSantis the governor of Florida proposed the reestablishment of a civilian, military force that would would be controlled by him. During War War II the Sunshine State had created the Florida State Guard in 1941 as a temporary measure as there was a void as the members of National Guard were deployed during the war. It was disbanded after the end of the war.

DeSantis said that the proposed civilian force would “not be encumbered by the federal government.” He added that this would allow the administration led by him to be flexible in responding to events in the state and that the state could respond in the “most effective way possible.”

According to the governor’s office, the state of Florida would become the 23rd one to have a state guard. The press release from the office mentioned that California, Texas and New York were states that had state guards.

Recently, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had sent a directive that warned members of the National Guard that their pay would be withheld if they didn’t get vaccinated. The directive said that they would also be barred from training.

Kevin Stitt, the governor of Oklahoma, who is a Republican, asked Austin to exempt guard members in his state from mandatory vaccine. However, Austin denied the request. Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, who is also a Republican, proposed the setting up of the Florida State Guard, shortly after Austin’s directive.

Florida law allows DeSantis, as governor, to deploy a military force to maintain law and order in the state during incidents such as protests. DeSantis said that the force will consist of 200 volunteer members. The budget proposal released by him allocates $3.5 million for training and equipping civilians.

As expected, there were strong protests from the Democrats in Florida. The Democrat challenger for the gubernatorial elections Rep. Charlie Crist described the proposed new unit as “handpicked secret police” while state Sen. Annette Taddeo posted on Twitter that DeSantis was a “wannabe dictator” who was proposing to form a “vigilante militia” like they have “seen in Cuba.”

Homelessness crisis biggest problem in LA, city residents angry, frustrated according to Times report

0

A recent poll, conducted by the Los Angeles Business Council Institute in cooperation with the LA Times, reported that voters in Los Angeles wanted the government to act quickly on the homelessness crisis, even if it began with short term measures.

The poll surveyed 906 voters registered in the Los Angeles. County. Four out of 10 said that the homelessness problem in the city made them feel unsafe. They expressed empathy for homeless people but also said that were losing patience and were disappointed with the leadership of the region.

When they were asked to describe their feelings they mentioned that there was urine and feces in the streets. They said that was a rising sense of disorder and that they felt concern for their children and also considered moving out.

The poll was designed to update results from a similar poll that was conducted by the Los Angeles Business Council Institute and the Times, two years ago. The results are consistent with the earlier poll and many attitudes on homelessness seem to remain the same.

The poll showed that homelessness remained the top problem. About 94 percent of the voters said that homelessness was a serious or very serious problem. This is the same number as the last poll despite officials from the region spending millions of state and federal dollars to deal with homelessness.

When asked about the current homelessness crisis, 79 percent said that the problem had become worse than before while 13 percent said that it had remained the same. Only seven percent said that the problem had improved.

The poll did throw up one unexpected change in attitude. This change was on the tradeoff between spending money on short term term housing or to spend it on long term housing. During the recent poll conducted when participants were asked if officials needed to focus on “short-term shelter sites or they needed to focus on “long-term housing for homeless people with services” 57 percent of the respondents said that the focus should be on short-term solutions, while 30 percent said it should be long-term.

This question was worded in a similar manner to the one asked in the poll that was conducted two years, before the pandemic disrupted the world. In that poll the voters opinions were almost evenly divided between short and long term focus to solve the housing crisis.
