White Sox push past Royals to end losing streak

Andrew Vaughn belted a tie-breaking three-run home run in the seventh inning as the Chicago White Sox defeated the visiting Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon to end an eight-game losing streak.

Jake Burger added a homer for the White Sox.

Chicago scored four unanswered runs after the Royals’ Whit Merrifield tied the game 3-3 with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Vaughn connected on the first pitch he saw from Royals right-hander Scott Barlow, who entered after Collin Snider (2-1) allowed consecutive two-out singles.

Bennett Sousa (1-0) notched the win after pitching just two-thirds of an inning, before Kendall Graveman struck out four to notch a two-inning save, his first.

Early dominance from right-hander Dylan Cease and an opportunistic attack helped stake the White Sox to a 3-0 lead after five innings.

Royals right-hander Zack Greinke yielded single runs to Chicago in the second, third and fourth innings. Reese McGuire put the White Sox on the board first with a run-scoring sacrifice fly before Vaughn delivered an RBI double in the third and Burger homered in the fourth, his second.

Cease retired the first 13 Kansas City batters before he walked Carlos Santana with one out in the fifth inning.

Edward Olivares spoiled Cease’s no-hit bit with an infield single leading off the sixth, which helped spur the Royals to a two-run rally, featuring RBI singles from Merrifield and Andrew Benintendi.

Cease fanned Hunter Dozier with the bases loaded to end the sixth-inning threat and preserve a 3-2 Chicago lead.

Cease struck out nine in his six innings while allowing two runs and three hits with three walks.

Greinke scattered three runs and five hits in six innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

Burger finished with three hits, while Vaughn and Tim Anderson added two hits each for the White Sox out of the top two spots in the order. McGuire brought home another run in the eighth inning when he grounded into a double play.

Adalberto Mondesi missed his first game of the season for Kansas City. He exited with left knee discomfort in the sixth inning of Monday’s 6-0 victory.

Rangers’ Artemi Panarin, Andrew Copp out vs. Canadiens

New York Rangers forwards Artemi Panarin and Andrew Copp have been ruled out of Wednesday’s home game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Panarin sustained an upper-body injury and Copp aggravated a lower-body ailment during the second period of New York’s 4-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.

“Nothing major, obviously,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “I’ll know more today, but there’s nothing to worry about. Not going to play tonight either one of them, but there’s no concern if they’ll play next week.”

The Rangers (51-23-6, 108 points) are locked into the second seed in the Metropolitan Division. They will square off against either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Washington Capitals in the playoffs.

Panarin, 30, has recorded career-high totals in both assists (74) and points (96) this season. His 22 goals are third-best on the team.

Copp, 27, has 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 16 games with the Rangers. He was acquired last month from the Winnipeg Jets.

Atlanta United bring back GK Rocco Rios Novo

0

Injuries in their goalkeeping ranks have spurred Atlanta United to acquire Rocco Rios Novo on loan from Lanus in Argentina’s Primera Division.

The club’s No. 1 goalkeeper Brad Guzan ruptured his right Achilles tendon April 16 in a 0-0 tie against FC Cincinnati. Goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira has his own Achilles injury and is out indefinitely.

Atlanta United turned to Bobby Shuttleworth after Guzan was injured and now he will split time with the 19-year-old Rios Novo. The club also has homegrown goalkeeper Justin Garces further down the depth chart.

It will be the second stint with the Atlanta franchise for Rios Novo, who was born in Los Angeles. He started 20 regular season games for Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championship in 2021 and appeared for the first team in a CONCACAF Champions League game last April.

“We’re pleased to welcome Rocco back to Atlanta and look forward to integrating him into the team,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a release. “He’s a young, talented player who we’re very familiar with who will add competition to our goalkeeping group.”

As Raptors surge into Game 6, 76ers remain confident

The Toronto Raptors will try to take another step toward making history Thursday night when they play the visiting Philadelphia 76ers in Game 6 of an Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

After losing the first three games of the best-of-seven series, the Raptors have won the next two. No team in NBA history has won a playoff series after losing the first three games.

The Raptors posted a 103-88 win in Game 5 without Fred VanVleet (strained hip), overcoming his 20.3 points per game from the regular season with a strong defensive effort. He is listed as doubtful for Game 6.

Even with the Raptors missing a key player, the momentum shift in the series is palpable.

“Maybe there is, but it doesn’t really matter,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. “Ball goes up on Thursday, everybody’s gotta play like heck.”

Pascal Siakam led Toronto scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while four others reached double figures in points during Game 5.

“They’re doing a really good job of just finding some things offensively,” Nurse said. “I think they feel really good down there. We’re generating, for the most part, really good shots and they should feel good about that. They’re just moving the pieces around and we’ve got a few principles we want to follow and they’re doing a good job of it.”

Joel Embiid, playing with a torn ligament in his right thumb, led Philadelphia with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

“I mean, it’s the same recipe,” Embiid said. “Don’t turn the ball over, offensive rebounding. We definitely have to be better defensively, more connected defensively. I feel like there were a few plays (Monday) where we were not on point and we didn’t have each other’s backs. But we’re fine. There’s a reason why we won three games in a row.”

Toronto’s Precious Achiuwa, who scored 17 points in Game 5, has played an important role in limiting Embiid.

“I understand my assignment, so I just go out there and try to do it to the best of my ability,” Achiuwa said. “Try to switch ball screens, stay on (Embiid) to disrupt the flow of his offense. Try to make him work, run. Space out the floor, hit wide-open jumpers, take him off the dribble, whatever I get on that side.”

Nurse has been impressed with his backup forward.

“He feels like a more confident, different player to me,” Nurse said of Achiuwa.

James Harden and Tyrese Maxey have struggled offensively for the 76ers.

“We have long, athletic guys, skilled, and we just tried to take advantage of every mismatch that we had,” Achiuwa said.

Maxey, who scored 38 points in Game 1, was held to 12 points on 5-for-14 shooting in Game 5. Harden had 15 points in Game 5 on 4-of-11 shooting and also committed a game-high five turnovers.

The 76ers shot 38.3 percent (31 of 81) from the field Monday.

“We have to get James going downhill in some more actions that he likes and is more comfortable,” 76ers coach Doc Rivers said. “You know, I just keep saying with Tyrese, we just have to get the ball in his hands more. We just do. I said it all game. He’s just not getting the ball in transition enough. And that’s on us.”

Toronto held a 56-36 edge in points in the paint in Game 5.

“I just thought that they were the tougher team all night,” Rivers said. “They were more physical all night. I thought they attacked us, we didn’t attack back, we didn’t get in the paint enough.”

Bucs pick up LB Devin White’s 5th-year option

As expected, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked up the fifth-year option on linebacker Devin White.

Wednesday’s move guarantees his $11.7 million salary for the 2023 season.

White, 24, made his first Pro Bowl last season and posted 128 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one fumble recovery in 17 starts.

He has 359 tackles, 15 sacks, six fumble recoveries and one interception in 45 games (all starts) and helped the Bucs win Super Bowl LV.

White signed a four-year, $29.3 million rookie deal after being drafted fifth overall in 2019.

NOTES
–The Greg Norman-designed course opened in 2015 and 250 yards and 51 bunkers were added in preparation for the PGA Tour stop.
–The Mexico Open was first held in 1944 and is considered the country’s national championship.
–Patrick Flavin and Turk Pettit advanced from a 6-for-2 playoff to earn Monday qualifier spots along with Jeffrey Kang and Bryson Nimmer.
–The 10 players from Mexico in the field are the most on record for a PGA Tour event.

BEST BETS
–No. 2 Jon Rahm (+475 at BetMGM) is the heavy favorite as the only top-15 player in the field. He tees it up for the first time since the Masters still seeking his first win since last year’s U.S. Open. Rahm has been backed by the highest percentage of the winning handle at 17.9 percent.
–Abraham Ancer +2000) and Carlos Ortiz (+6600) are among the Mexican players seeking to win in their home country. Ancer has a pair of top-10s in 12 starts this season, including a T7 at Mayakoba, and has been backed by 7.0 percent of the bets and 8.3 percent of the handle. Ortiz is 83-under par when playing in Mexico, the second-best of any player since the start of the 2014-15 season (Justin Thomas, -90).
–Tony Finau (+2200) is a multiple-time winner on the PGA Tour but does not have a top-10 in 12 starts this season. He has still drawn 5.4 percent of the bets and 6.6 percent of the handle at BetMGM.
–Kevin Na (+2800) has one top-10 in nine starts as he seeks a win for the fifth consecutive season. He’s coming off a T26 at the RBC Heritage.
–Patrick Reed (+3300) won the 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship. However, his odds have lengthened from +2800 as Reed doesn’t have a top-25 in his past nine worldwide starts.
–Gary Woodland opened at +2500 but shifted to +2200 as he led BetMGM on Wednesday with 8.4 percent of the total winning bets and was second with 10.8 percent of the handle, making him the sportsbook’s biggest liability. Woodland has three top-10s and three missed cuts in his last seven events.
–Cameron Champ has had the biggest movement at BetMGM and was being offered at +4000 after opening at +6600. He’s the second biggest liability.

Cards rally past Mets as benches clear, Nolan Arenado ejected

Nolan Arenado drove in three runs before getting ejected and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied past the visiting New York Mets 10-5 in a contentious game Wednesday.

Corey Dickerson and Dylan Carlson drove in two runs each as the Cardinals erased a 4-1 second-inning deficit and snapped their three-game losing streak.

Brandon Nimmo and Tomas Nido had two-RBI games for the Mets, who lost for just the fourth time in their past 15 games.

The benches and bullpens emptied in the bottom of the eighth inning after Arenado became enraged by Yoan Lopez’s up-and-in pitch. Things escalated after Arenado shoved Nido, the Mets’ catcher, to earn an ejection.

Amid all the subsequent pushing and shoving, Cardinals coach Stubby Clapp wrestled Mets slugger Pete Alonso to the ground. Clapp was also ejected.

Cardinals starting pitcher Steven Matz allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in four innings. Jake Woodford (1-0), the first of three Cardinals relievers, earned the victory.

Mets starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco (1-1) allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits, two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch in 3 2/3 innings.

New York third baseman J.D. Davis left the game in the top of the eighth inning after Genesis Cabrera hit him in the foot with a pitch.

Dickerson’s RBI single gave the Cardinals a 1-0 first-inning lead. The Mets responded in the second inning when Nido and Nimmo lined two-run doubles to put them up 4-1.

Arenado’s two-run single in the bottom of the third inning cut the Mets’ lead to 4-3.

The Cardinals continued their rally with a five-run fourth inning to move ahead 8-4. The key blows were Dickerson’s RBI infield single and Carlson’s two-run triple.

Arenado’s RBI double in the sixth inning pushed the Cardinals’ lead to 9-4. Francisco Lindor’s RBI double in the seventh cut the lead to 9-5, but Goldschmidt’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning made it 10-5.

Playoff-bound Bruins encounter hot Sabres

The Boston Bruins will look to continue a hot finish to the regular season and make it four consecutive victories when they play host to the Buffalo Sabres in their Thursday night home finale.

Boston (50-25-5, 105 points) enters off Tuesday’s 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers, limiting the league’s top team to three shots in the third period. The Bruins scored a pair of first-period goals within six seconds of each other and added one in each of the final two frames.

“We did a good job with (Florida),” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I don’t think we gave up much. Certainly in the first period they got some good looks. It didn’t look like they had their usual jump, to me. … I certainly liked the way our team performed. Even offensively, I thought we generated a lot.”

Taylor Hall and Brad Marchand had a goal and an assist each, while captain Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak each logged two assists for the Bruins, who have 50 wins for the first time since 2017-18. They have clinched at least the No. 1 wild-card position.

Linus Ullmark needed to make just 19 saves on the way to his second straight win since returning from an injury. He also is expected to start Thursday’s game.

“Against good offensive teams, that’s one of the better formulas,” Cassidy said. “If you get pucks back, check well and force them to defend, they get frustrated. I don’t know if that’s what happened, but our game was solid.”

The Bruins’ power-play woes — now 0-for-36 over 12 games — continued. Marchand did break an 11-game scoring drought with a late empty-netter against Florida.

Pastrnak and defenseman Hampus Lindholm both have played in multiple games since returning from injuries, giving the Bruins a key pre-playoff boost.

Cassidy expects to play a full lineup on Thursday, but some players could rest during Friday’s back-to-back at Toronto.

Despite being out of playoff contention, Buffalo (31-38-11, 73 points) figures to give the Bruins a stern test. The Sabres have won a season-high four consecutive games and scored 26 goals during a 5-1-0 recent stretch.

Jeff Skinner and Tage Thompson had a goal and an assist each in Saturday’s 5-3 win over the Islanders. The Sabres have been idle since.

“It’s tough to really put a single thing that’s given us success,” Skinner said. “I think each night it’s different. … But the fact that it is consistent is probably the best thing for us to grab on to because it’s hard to be like that on a consistent basis.”

Casey Mittelstadt scored the opening goal on Saturday, his fifth of the season and 12th point in the last 18 games (three goals). He missed most of the first half with an upper-body injury that required surgery.

“We’re not seeing the true Casey Mittelstadt,” Sabres coach Don Granato said recently. “We’re seeing him push through the ripple effect of a long injury and I think he’s doing a spectacular job in that.”

Goalie Craig Anderson (undisclosed injury) and Kyle Okposo (leg) have both missed recent practice time. Anderson was out for Saturday’s game, and Dustin Tokarski made 19 saves for the win.

D.C. United sign G Rafael Romo

0

D.C. United signed goalkeeper Rafael Romo to a contract on Wednesday that spans through the 2023 season with an option in 2024.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the MLS team for Romo, who competed with Oud-Heverlee Leuven in the Belgian first division.

“Rafael is an experienced goalkeeper that will help solidify our depth at the goalkeeper position,” D.C. United president Dave Kasper said. “We look forward to integrating him with the group in the coming week.”

Romo, 32, has recorded seven clean sheets in 48 career appearances with OH Leuven. He has also made 13 appearances for the Venezuelan national team.

“We’ve been monitoring Rafael for a good period of time and we’re happy to bring in a player with as much professional experience as his,” D.C. United general manager Lucy Rushton said. “We believe he will be a great addition to our current group of goalkeepers, providing additional healthy competition to the group. We want to welcome him to the District and look forward to having him at the club.”

Report: Jags T Cam Robinson agrees to 3-year, $54M deal

The Jacksonville Jaguars and left tackle Cam Robinson have agreed to a three-year, $54 million extension, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Robinson, who was franchise tagged for the second straight year, will earn $18 million per year. He would have earned $16.66 million in 2022 under the tag had the two sides not reached a deal by July 15.

Robinson, 26, has appeared in 61 games (all starts) for the Jaguars since they selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Jaguars have the No. 1 pick in the draft Thursday night. Having Robinson locked up likely means they won’t select one of the top left tackles available — Evan Neal of Alabama or North Carolina State’s Ikem Ekwonu — with the top pick.

Instead, they could address their need for an edge rusher with Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan or Travon Walker from Georgia.
