Suns out to book series victory over Pelicans

The top-seeded Phoenix Suns have had a fight on their hands in their Western Conference first-round series.

Leading scorer Devin Booker has not played since coming away with a hamstring strain in the third quarter of Game 2 and they have lost twice in the series to the eighth-seeded New Orleans Pelicans.

But the Suns can advance to the conference semifinals if they beat the Pelicans in Game 6 on Thursday night at New Orleans.

Phoenix moved to the brink of advancing with a 112-97 home victory in Game 5 on Thursday night. Mikal Bridges scored a career playoff-high 31 points, played 47 minutes and helped hold Pelicans leading scorer CJ McCollum to 7-of-22 shooting.

“I’m ready to play tomorrow, man,” Bridges said. “I’m teed up. I’m energized.”

Bridges, who hasn’t missed a game in his four-year NBA career, gave the Suns offense a lift in the absence of Booker by making 12 of 17 shots.

Booker was not expected to play in Game 6. However, ESPN reported Wednesday that it’s possible Booker could return, given how well his hamstring is progressing.

“He doesn’t miss games, he guards the best players every night and then he has 31 (points),” teammate Chris Paul said.

Paul bounced back from Game 4, when he tied his career playoff low with four points, to score 22 in Game 5 with 11 assists. Bridges took some pressure off Paul by adding five rebounds, a career-high four blocks and two steals.

“You can’t clone him, but you wish you could,” Suns coach Monty Williams said of Bridges. “He’s just one of those rare basketball players that can play that way on defense, but also give you the point production that he gave tonight.”

The Suns built a 12-point lead in the first quarter, led by as many as 17 in the second quarter and never led by fewer than seven points in the second half.

“They came out ready and we didn’t,” said Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas, who had 17 points and 14 rebounds, after having 26 and 15 in Game 4 at home.

Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans with 22 points but crashed to the floor late in the game and moments later grabbed his right arm while losing control of the basketball. New Orleans made just one field goal in the final five minutes and none in the final three.

Pelicans coach Willie Green said Ingram would be evaluated when the team got back to New Orleans.

“We made some timely mistakes No. 1, starting with the turnovers,” Green added. “(We had) 15 turnovers for 23 points. That fuels their team, that fuels their transition opportunities. That’s an area where we know we have to be better. If we do, it’s a totally different game for us.”

McCollum missed seven of the eight 3-point shots he took as the Pelicans finished 5 of 25 (20 percent) from beyond the arc.

“I thought (the Suns) did a good job of coming out, playing desperate,” Green said. “They played hard, they competed. They kind of knocked us on our heels early.

“Give them credit. They did what they needed to do on their home floor. We’re heading back to New Orleans, and we’ll be ready to play.”

The Pelicans, who won elimination games against the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers in the play-in tournament, will try to force a Game 7 on Saturday night at Phoenix.

Report: MLB draft’s top pitching prospect has TJ surgery

Dylan Lesko, the top pitching prospect in ESPN’s 2022 MLB draft rankings, reportedly had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.

The right-hander from Buford High School near Atlanta had the elbow reconstruction procedure performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The draft is scheduled for July 17-19.

Lesko, who has committed to play at Vanderbilt, is ranked No. 8 overall by ESPN.

It’s not unheard of for injured pitchers to get drafted in the first round. The Washington Nationals selected Lucas Giolito 16th overall in 2012 and the Toronto Blue Jays picked Gunnar Hoglund 19th last year; both right-handers needed Tommy John surgery.

USMNT to host Uruguay in World Cup prep

The United States Men’s National Team will continue its World Cup preparation with an international friendly against Uruguay at Kansas City, Kan., on June 5.

Both nations have qualified for the 2022 World Cup, which begins in November at Qatar.

The USMNT opens World Cup play Nov. 21 in Group B, against a European qualifier that will come out of the group of Wales, Scotland or Ukraine. Uruguay will open its World Cup run Nov. 24 in Group H against South Korea.

The June 5 game is set for Children’s Mercy Park, home of Sporting Kansas City of MLS.

“These are the kinds of opportunities we need to continue to grow as a group and set ourselves up to be successful in Qatar,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a release. “Once again, we’ll have the benefit of outstanding facilities in Kansas City and a venue that has shown tremendous support for the national team.”

The USMNT also has a friendly scheduled for June 1 at Cincinnati against Morocco, another World Cup qualifier. In addition, the national team has CONCACAF Nations Leagues games scheduled for June 10 against Grenada at Austin, Texas, and June 14 on the road against El Salvador.

Bulls rule out Zach LaVine, Alex Caruso for Game 5 vs. Bucks

The Chicago Bulls ruled out All-Star Zach LaVine and fellow guard Alex Caruso for Wednesday’s Game 5 of their Eastern Conference first-round series against the Bucks in Milwaukee.

LaVine is in health and safety protocol, while Caruso remains in concussion protocol.

The Bulls are looking to stave off elimination against the Bucks, who hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

LaVine, 27, is averaging 19.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.3 rebounds through four games in the series against the reigning NBA champions. He scored a team-high 24 points in Sunday’s 119-95 loss in Game 3.

He averaged 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 67 games (all starts) during the regular season, earning his second straight All-Star selection.

Caruso, 28, is in the concussion protocol after taking an inadvertent hit to the face from Jevon Carter in Sunday’s game.

He is averaging 6.3 points, 4.3 assists and 2.8 rebounds in four games during the series.

Coby White and rookie Ayo Dosunmu likely will see an increase in playing time in place of LaVine and Caruso.

The Bulls are still without their primary point guard, Lonzo Ball, who missed half of the season due to a knee injury that required surgery.

Mike Tyson involved in altercation on plane

0

Mike Tyson was involved in a scuffle with another passenger on an airplane at San Francisco International Airport on Wednesday, his spokesperson confirmed to ESPN.

TMZ posted a video that purported to show Tyson punching the passenger, who was seated behind him and previously was seen trying to get Tyson’s attention. The other man was shown subsequently in the video with bloody cuts on his head.

Tyson’s spokesperson told ESPN, “Unfortunately, Mr. Tyson had an incident on a flight with an aggressive passenger who began harassing him and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat.”

San Francisco Police told ESPN that “officers were dispatched to a physical altercation on board an airplane” on Wednesday night, with two subjects detailed and then released. One of the two people sustained injuries but “provided minimal details of the incident and refused to cooperate further with the police investigation.”

Tyson eventually traveled to Miami, where he was photographed on Thursday in a nightclub with former wrestling star Ric Flair, who tweeted the picture.

New York moving closer to 2-year ban of Bob Baffert

0

The state of New York took another step toward handing trainer Bob Baffert a two-year suspension.

Independent hearing officer O. Peter Sherwood on Wednesday sided with the New York Racing Association’s push to ban Baffert from state tracks in the wake of the infamous drug scandal at last year’s Kentucky Derby and other medication violations.

Sherwood, a retired New York State Supreme Court Justice, said in a 50-page ruling released Wednesday that NYRA met its burden of proof. Sherwood said Baffert’s conduct is detrimental to the best interests of horse racing, the health and safety of jockeys and horses and overall business operations in New York.

“NYRA has reasonably concluded that it will not condone Baffert’s reckless practices, outrageous behavior and substance violations, each of which compromises the integrity of the sport,” Sherwood wrote in the report. “I conclude that NYRA has reasonably determined that he should be excluded from the race tracks for a lengthy period.”

Sherwood’s recommendation is not final. Baffert’s side and NYRA each have 14 days to offer rebuttals before a three-person committee.

The 69-year-old Baffert is a Hall of Fame trainer who has produced six Kentucky Derby winners — Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), War Emblem (2002), American Pharoah (2015), Justify (2018) and Authentic (2020). American Pharoah and Justify also won the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown.

Baffert was suspended by Churchill Downs — the site of the Kentucky Derby — through 2023 after Medina Spirit tested positive for drugs and was stripped of the victory in last May’s Run for the Roses.

Medina Spirit died in December from what Baffert said was a heart attack, though a necropsy report was inconclusive.

NYRA’s discipline against Baffert would prevent him from Saratoga Race Course, Aqueduct Racetrack and Belmont Park.

On Wednesday, a large number of Washington D.C.’s elite gathered at the Washington National Cathedral. They had come to honor Madeleine Albright, the first female secretary of state of the nation. She had died of cancer, at the age of 84, on March 23. President Joe Biden, former presidents, leading foreign dignitaries, top officials of the Biden administration and others attended the service that began around 11 a.m. There were about 1,400 people preset at the service.

Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Hillary And Chelsea Clinton, Michele Obama, speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell attended. Others who attended included her family, current and former secretaries of state, military officials and many other dignitaries. Leaders from the European states who remember her role in bringing to an end factional wars when former Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia etc broke up to form smaller republics, were present to honor the 64th U.S. secretary of state.

Biden described her as a “force of nature” who had turned the “tide of history” and always spoke out for democracy. He added that she considered international politics to be “personal.” He also mentioned personal anecdotes of how she effortlessly mingled her diplomatic skills with her dancing skills and joked about how unsuccessful she was in teaching him to dance.

Former president Bill Clinton, who appointed her as the first female secretary of state, spoke of many of her skills as well as his last conversation with her, a couple of weeks before she died, when she told him that the question that really mattered was what kind of a world they left behind for their grandchildren.

Hillary Clinton confirmed that the first secretary of state had taught the popular Macarena dance form to the foreign minister of Botswana. Madeleine had once left an official event in Buenos Aires to dance the South American tango. She also danced a lot at Chelsea Clinton’s wedding. Many others paid glowing tributes to the feisty lady including her daughter Alice.

Madeleine Albright was a woman of many talents. She was proficient in five languages and wrote a few books. She was also a professor and a role model for millions of young Americans.
