Titans exercise fifth-year option on standout DT Jeffery Simmons

The Tennessee Titans exercised the fifth-year option of star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons’ rookie contract on Wednesday.

The move guarantees Simmons will earn $10.75 million in 2023.

Simmons posted a career-best 8.5 sacks in 2021 while making the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. He tacked on 12 tackles for loss (of 54 overall) and six pass breakups and earned second-team All-Pro honors.

Simmons also had a monster playoff outing against the Cincinnati Bengals with three sacks despite the Titans being upset in the AFC Divisional round clash.

Overall, the 24-year-old Simmons has 13.5 sacks, 135 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 12 passes defensed in 41 NFL games (39 starts) over three seasons.

Simmons was the 19th overall pick out of Mississippi State in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Diamondbacks push across two late runs to beat Dodgers

The Arizona Diamondbacks scored twice in the eighth inning to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series on Wednesday at Phoenix.

Nick Ahmed homered for the Diamondbacks, who recorded their first series win against the Dodgers since Aug. 29-Sept. 1, 2019.

Ian Kennedy (2-1) earned the victory and Mark Melancon retired the Dodgers in order in the ninth for his fourth save.

After Los Angeles tied the score at 1 on Trea Turner’s RBI single in the top of the eighth, Arizona responded with two runs in the bottom half.

Daulton Varsho drew a leadoff walk from Daniel Hudson (1-1) and scored when Sergio Alcantara bunted to third baseman Max Muncy, whose errant throw to first sailed into right field.

Arizona added an insurance run when Alcantara scored from third on Pavin Smith’s groundout.

Julio Urias held Arizona without a hit until Ahmed’s solo homer with one out in the fifth, a 398-foot shot to left field.

Urias departed after allowing one run on one hit over six innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Turner doubled with two outs in the sixth inning and has reached base safely in 37 consecutive games.

After Turner’s double, Muncy walked before Zac Gallen struck out Cody Bellinger to end the threat.

Gallen tossed six scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Dodgers pulled even with a run in the eighth against Kennedy. Mookie Betts singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Turner’s two-out single to left field.

Los Angeles lost to Arizona for just the fifth time in their past 22 meetings. The Dodgers had won the last nine straight series.

Turner and Betts had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who lost despite outhitting the D-backs 5-2.

Lightning look to keep rolling against Blue Jackets

The playoff-bound Tampa Bay Lightning look to continue their dominance of the host Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night.

Aiming to match a season-high five-game winning streak and clinch third place in the Atlantic Division, the visiting Lightning conclude a home-and-home trying for a sixth consecutive victory over the Blue Jackets.

Victorious in six of seven and owning a 26-8 goal-advantage during its four-game winning streak, Tampa Bay (50-22-8, 108 points) is certainly playing like a club capable of winning its third consecutive Stanley Cup.

Columbus (36-37-7, 79 points) was the latest to be taken down by the surging Lightning, who won the first of this back-to-back by a 4-1 score at home on Tuesday.

Steven Stamkos reached, then surpassed, the 100-point mark for the first time during his stellar 14-year career with two goals and two assists, and Nikita Kucherov notched one goal with three assists as the Lightning prevailed in their regular-season home finale.

“This group continues to find a way,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “And now, we’re at 50 wins and 100-plus points again.

“This isn’t guaranteeing playoff success. … I’m excited to see what we’re going to do. This is going to be a fun spring.”

The Lightning have had their fun of late against the Blue Jackets. Since suffering a stunning first-round sweep at the hands of underdog Columbus in 2019, Tampa Bay has won 12 of 16, including the postseason, in this all-time series. The Lightning outscored the Blue Jackets 24-11 to win the last five meetings.

“Against a team like that, you have to be careful,” Blue Jackets forward Oliver Bjorkstrand said. “They have a lot of weapons.

“(Tuesday’s) game is something we can learn from.”

Stamkos has seven goals with 14 assists in the last seven games overall, and has three goals with four assists in his last five versus Columbus. Kucherov, who has nine goals and 11 assists in the last seven games, also has 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 20 career games against the Blue Jackets.

Andrei Vasilevskiy recorded his 38th win after making 20 saves on Tuesday. He has a 2.50 goals-against average during his four-game winning streak versus Columbus, while backup Brian Elliott has stopped 61 of 67 shots to win his last three overall starts.

Battered by injuries, Columbus limps toward the finish finish amid a 1-4-1 rut. But, with a bevy of young players in the lineup, the Blue Jackets can take something from competing against elite clubs like the Lightning.

“It’s a good gauge for our guys to play against, and watch,” Columbus coach Brad Larsen said.

“We know we’re not a playoff team, but want to see these guys take some steps.”

Bjorkstrand appears set to finish strong with two goals and two assists in the last two games after going without a point in the previous 11. Meanwhile, teammate Jack Roslovic, who assisted on Bjorkstrand’s goal Tuesday, has 12 points (nine goals, three assists) in the last eight contests.

Columbus’ Elvis Merzlikins made 28 saves Tuesday, and has a 2.15 goals-against average in his last six starts.

Warriors heavy favorites to polish off Nuggets at home

The Golden State Warriors will take a second swipe at clinching their first-round series when they face the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 on Wednesday night in San Francisco.

The third-seeded Warriors won the first three games of the Western Conference series before Denver avoided a sweep with a 126-121 home win on Sunday.

Despite a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, Golden State guard Klay Thompson says Game 5 is of utmost importance to his club.

“We got to go into it like it’s a must-win,” Thompson told reporters. “We’d like to get some rest before next series and we don’t want to travel back to Denver (for a possible Game 6). We got to come with the mindset that we have something to prove, that it’s a must-win.”

The Warriors are 8.5-point favorites in Game 5 at both BetMGM and DraftKings. They have been baked by 78 percent of the spread handle at the former but just 49 percent at the latter.

The first two games were on San Francisco Bay and the Warriors prevailed by an average of 18 points. Golden State won Game 3 in Denver before the Nuggets responded with their best performance of the series in Game 4.

No team has ever recovered from a 3-0 deficit in NBA playoff history but Denver is maintaining confidence.

The Nuggets point to overcoming 3-1 deficits twice during the 2020 playoffs — against the Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Clippers.

“Obviously of all teams in the playoffs, we are probably most comfortable being down 3-1,” Denver coach Michael Malone said. “Can I say … we have them right where we want them? No. But we are alive. We live to fight another day.”

Reigning MVP Nikola Jokic has recorded back-to-back 37-point efforts to overcome his slow start to the series. He is averaging 31.3 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists.

Point guard Monte Morris was a big force in Game 4 by making 5 of 7 3-point attempts and scoring 24 points. He averaged just 10.7 points over the first three games so his play in Game 5 will be crucial in terms of whether the Nuggets can again stave off elimination.

“There is no pressure on us,” Morris said. “I think Game 3 and 4 has been our best basketball, how physical we want to be, we displayed that.

“Going back there, we see they’re beatable. They’re a helluva team. … But we know if we play our brand of basketball and bring the energy, we give ourselves a chance.”

Golden State coach Steve Kerr is expecting a different result, too.

Kerr didn’t like his team’s play nor its approach in Game 4.

“We needed that,” Kerr said of the loss. “I felt like we got completely away from the game plan in the first half, because I think we were almost too anxious to win the series.”

Game 5 could see the return of star guard Stephen Curry to the starting lineup after he averaged 27.5 points in 28.3 minutes off the bench after his return from a foot injury.

Curry played 37 minutes in Game 4 when he had 33 points, eight assists and four steals.

Jordan Poole started the first four games and is averaging 24.3 points. However, Poole had just 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting on Sunday as Denver shifted responsibilities and had forward Aaron Gordon shadowing him.

“Gordon got into him,” Kerr said of Poole. “That’s to be expected at this point. Jordan has made a name for himself around the league. He’s played so well, teams are going to start throwing a lot of stuff at him, including physicality, and trying to get under his skin.”

Nuggets rookie Bones Hyland views the Warriors as a beatable team.

“We just proved that. We go out there and play Mile High City basketball, we can beat anybody,” Hyland said. “I feel like we have a very unguardable team. We go out there and play our basketball, we are unguardable.”

Both sportsbooks also had the Over/Under set at 225.5 points on Wednesday.

The Over was being backed by 74 percent of the bets and 73 percent of the handle at BetMGM and 71 and 68 percent, respectively, at DraftKings.

Jaguars on clock on eve of unpredictable NFL draft

For the second consecutive year, the Jacksonville Jaguars hold the cards atop the NFL draft.

Unlike the 2021 class, there are no sure things on the eve of the 2022 NFL Draft, which will air from stages in and around Las Vegas and the world beginning Thursday night.

“We worry about our board and how we have players valued,” Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said. “I really don’t pay much attention to what other people are thinking or saying because you don’t know. You don’t know what’s fact. You don’t know what’s fiction at this point. This is a unique period where I think there’s a lot of guys that are valued very similar.”

Baalke and owner Shad Khan were in lockstep in April 2021 when Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was their pick following months of in-person and Zoom conversations with the team. Those calls also included coach Urban Meyer, who was fired before the end of the season and replaced by Doug Pederson, a Super Bowl championship coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Khan and Pederson said a meeting Wednesday would be used to “solidify” the Jaguars’ draft board. The consensus No. 1 player available is Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. He rebounded from a leg injury to record 14 sacks for the Wolverines last season and carries himself with the “Everybody’s All-American” demeanor that attracted Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh to offer him a scholarship.

The separation between Hutchinson and the pack is tighter than previous years in part because there is no clear-cut pecking order among the quarterback class.

Field Level Media’s Mark Jarvis rates Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett and Liberty’s Malik Willis as first-round picks with Matt Corral (Ole Miss) and Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati) among the top 50 prospects available.

Jacksonville’s direction might alter the plans of the Detroit Lions at No. 2. Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, Cincinnati cornerback Sauce Gardner, Georgia defensive end Travon Walker and three offensive tackles — NC State’s Ike Ekwonu, Alabama’s Evan Neal and Charles Cross from Mississippi State — also carry top-10 grades.

Walker entered the discussion at No. 1 when he clocked a 4.51-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine at 6-foot-5, 272 pounds.

“I truly feel it’s a blessing just to be in a position that people talk about me No. 1 coming from a lot of people really sleeping on me,” Walker said Tuesday.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said scouts are not new to the scene regarding Walker’s rare traits at his size. His 10-yard split of 1.54 seconds, faster than Hutchinson (1.61) and Thibodeaux (1.56), and Walker’s 36-inch vertical in Indianapolis opened eyes, too.

“He’s a freak,” Smart said, adding Walker’s 35 1/2-inch arm length also separates him from peers. “He’s got a lot of length. He’s an incredible athlete.”

Arm length has been the knock on Hutchinson, who measured 32 1/8 inches at the combine, but there are evaluators more focused on his on-field production.

Vegas odds shifted this week in Walker’s favor.

Neal and Ekwonu are coveted left tackles but the Jaguars signed Cam Robinson to a three-year deal and the Lions used their first-round pick on Penei Sewell last year.

That throws open the dart board for multiple teams behind the Lions, but the Houston Texans are set at left tackle with Laremy Tunsil and might be inclined to go with a defensive back or top remaining pass rusher depending on how the board falls for general manager Nick Caserio. He said six teams likely have six different players rated as the best at most positions.

“This draft, generally speaking, it’s a little bit of a crapshoot,” Caserio said. “I think there’s players that are all over the place. I don’t think there’s a consensus on any player.”

–New York, New York
The Jets are slated to pick fourth, one spot before the Giants in the first round. Both teams have multiple first-round picks and two selections in the top 10.

General manager Joe Douglas and the Jets are building around 2021 first-round pick Zach Wilson and targeting blocking help and skill-position weapons. But Douglas is known for coveting defense and applying a “best player available” strategy.

“There’s pressure every offseason, but obviously this year, having four picks in the top 38, if we do this the right way, it could really be special,” Douglas said.

The Giants reportedly met Wednesday to make a decision on the fifth-year option of quarterback Daniel Jones. Not picking up his 2023 salary would change the thinking of how new general manager Joe Schoen might invest his two top-10 picks. The Giants have picks No. 5 and No. 7 thanks to the 2021 draft-day trade with the Bears that netted quarterback Justin Fields for Chicago.

But that move, just like the Jones pick, were made by a different general manager and head coach.

Hired after helping rebuild the Buffalo Bills as assistant GM, Schoen was transparent in his desire to shore up the offensive line.

“If you want to build it up on both sides of the ball, build it up front. Offensive line, that’s very important,” he said.

–Receiver records
As many as seven wide receivers are considered first-round talents by Field Level Media and teams are likely to vary dramatically in their ranking of the order with Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson and Southern California’s Drake London in the thick of that race.

Seven wide receivers were drafted in the first round of the 2004 draft, including Larry Fitzgerald (Cardinals), Roy Williams (Lions) and Lee Evans (Bills).

Alabama’s Jameson Williams might be gone sooner than expected. Williams’ talent is not the question, but how teams view his draft value coming off of a torn ACL in the national championship game.

The Green Bay Packers traded Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders and are closely studying options to replace the All-Pro. Green Bay has two first-round picks.

“The last few have been pretty deep, and I think this one is another one,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said.

Mariners activate RHP Paul Sewald from COVID-19 list

The Seattle Mariners activated right-hander Paul Sewald from the COVID-19 list prior to Wednesday’s game against the host Tampa Bay Rays.

Sewald last pitched for the Mariners on April 19 before testing positive for COVID-19 during a club outbreak that included manager Scott Servais, outfielder Mitch Haniger and catcher Luis Torrens, among others.

Sewald, who went on the injured list on April 20, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday prior to being activated one day later.

Sewald, 31, has appeared in four games this season, going 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA with no walks and three strikeouts.

Servais returned to his managing duties Tuesday, arriving at Tropicana Field about one hour prior to first pitch. Haniger, who went on the list April 16, is with the club but hasn’t been activated. Torrens was activated Monday.

To open a spot for Sewald, Seattle optioned right-hander Penn Murfee to Triple-A Tacoma. Murfee was recalled to replace Sewald on April 20 but didn’t get into a game.

Murfee, 27, is 2-0 with two saves and hasn’t allowed an earned run over eight innings at Tacoma.

Predators G Juuse Saros to sit out final two games

Nashville Predators goaltender Juuse Saros will miss the last two games of the regular season because of a lower-body injury.

Saros sustained an apparent left leg injury during the third period of the Predators’ 5-4 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. He skated to the bench after an interference penalty on Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington with 6:32 remaining in regulation.

David Rittich replaced Saros and surrendered a game-tying goal to Matthew Tkachuk with 0.1 seconds remaining in the third period. The Predators (44-29-7, 95 points), however, secured a postseason berth later in the night after the Dallas Stars defeated the Vegas Golden Knights.

Saros, 27, sports a 38-25-3 record with a 2.64 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage and four shutouts in an NHL-high 67 starts this season. He played in his first NHL All-Star Game earlier in the campaign.

Also on Wednesday, the Predators recalled goaltender Connor Ingram from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League.

Ingram, 25, posted a 30-17-7 record with a 2.70 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 54 appearances with the Admirals this season.

Bucks double-digit favorites to bounce depleted Bulls

The Milwaukee Bucks look to punch their ticket to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs on Wednesday when they play host to the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of their series.

After dropping Game 2 of their first-round set, the Bucks bounced back with a vengeance by winning consecutive contests on the road to take a 3-1 series lead. The last two wins came in dominating fashion for Milwaukee, which recorded a 27-point average margin of victory.

Milwaukee is favored to dominated again on Wednesday. The Bucks opened as 10.5-point favorites at BetMGM but the line shifted to 12.5 with Milwaukee backed by 71 percent of the spread handle. The line was 12.0 at DraftKings, where the Bucks were drawing 76 percent of the spread handle.

If the Bucks can win either of the next two games, their second-round series with the Celtics is scheduled to begin Sunday at 1 ET in Boston. The Celtics earned extra time to rest and prepare by sweeping the Brooklyn Nets.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks in their 119-95 win over Chicago in Game 4 on Sunday afternoon with 32 points and 17 rebounds. Reserve Grayson Allen erupted for 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting, and Jrue Holiday added 26.

With Khris Middleton sidelined due to a sprained MCL, Allen has stepped up over the last two games by averaging 24.5 points and 4.0 rebounds off the bench.

Allen has been particularly sharp from 3-point range, sinking 11 of his last 14 shots (78.6 percent).

“Obviously much needed. The time was right, and he’s been really good,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “I think he’s just embracing the moment, embracing the opportunity. I think the guys are doing a good job screening for him, things like that.”

While things have been clicking on the offensive end for the Bucks, their defense also has been stout. Milwaukee has held Chicago under 100 points in three of four games in the series.

In addition to Middleton, George Hill will miss Wednesday’s contest with an abdomen injury. Luca Vildoza also is listed as day-to-day.

Now facing elimination, the Bulls will be looking to force Game 6 following their lackluster shooting performance on Sunday.

Chicago shot just 38.9 percent from the field (35 of 90) and 25.0 percent from 3-point range (9 of 36). The Bulls have not been able to find their stroke from distance all series, as they have shot under 27 percent from deep in three of four games.

“You know they (the Bucks) shot the ball well. That was the difference in the game in my opinion,” Chicago coach Billy Donovan said. “If you look at their shooting from the 3-point line compared to ours, that was the difference.”

The Bulls’ challenge became even greater with All-Star Zach LaVine (health and safety protocol) and fellow guard Alex Caruso (concussion protocol) ruled out for Game 5.

LaVine led the Bulls in Sunday’s loss with 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting. He also had 13 assists and five rebounds.

DeMar DeRozan contributed 23 points and Patrick Williams added 20 to go along with 10 rebounds. Nikola Vucevic notched 11 points and 10 rebounds to record his third double-double of the series.

Lonzo Ball (knee) and Matt Thomas (leg) are still out for the Bulls.

Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White likely will be directing the offense. White has averaged 6.3 points during the series, while Dosunmu has averaged just 3.0.

The Over/Under at BetMGM moved from 218.5 to 216.5 with the Under being supported by 68 percent of the bets and 56 percent of the handle. DraftKings’ market settled in between at 217.5 with the Under drawing 75 percent of the handle.

Commanders pick up DE Montez Sweat’s 5th-year option

The Washington Commanders picked up the fifth-year option for defensive end Montez Sweat on Wednesday.

Sweat, 25, will be guaranteed a salary of $11.5 million for the 2023 season.

The 2019 first-round pick (26th overall) has collected 21 sacks and 46 quarterback hits in 42 career starts.

Sweat posted 24 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 starts last season. He missed five games on injured reserve with a broken jaw.

Pirates SS Kevin Newman (groin) to IL, out 3-5 weeks

Pittsburgh Pirates starting shortstop Kevin Newman was placed on the injured list and could miss 3-to-5 weeks with a groin strain.

Newman aggravated his groin during Tuesday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers and left the game. Newman was replaced by Diego Castillo, who will also man shortstop in Wednesday night’s game.

Newman is batting .250 with four runs scored and eight RBIs in 14 games starts. He’s a career .257 hitter with 18 home runs.

The Pirates put outfielder Bryan Reynolds and Cole Tucker on the COVID-19 injured list on Tuesday. Reynolds was activated on Wednesday, taking Newman’s roster spot.
